If your FYP looks anything like ours (read: mine), then it’s full of Maxton Hall edits, theories and slow pan shots of the bucolic landscapes and sprawling country estates that play host to show’s hit new season, titled The World Between Us.

And while, granted, I’m yet to meet an enemies-to-lovers trope I haven’t taken to, I’m certainly not a cultural outlier for falling into this current obsession. In fact, the German-language show has become so popular, that it now claims the title of most-watched International Original Prime Video series, topping the charts in over 120 countries including the US, UK and Australia. Which is no mean feat given its stratospheric rise comes mere months after the zeitgeist-dominating finale of The Summer I Turned Pretty (with its equally as idyllic sets).

When do new episodes of Maxton Hall come out?

The show’s first season was gifted to us in one bingeable batch, but we’re not so lucky when it comes to Maxton Hall: The World Between Us – which follows a staggered release schedule.

The first three episodes (of the six planned) premiered in Australia on Friday November 7, 2025, with the additional episodes dropping weekly every Friday at 5pm AEDT. Of course, you can catch up on all six episodes of Maxton Hall season 1 on Prime Video in the meantime.

 • Episode 1, ‘Devastated: Aired November 7, 5pm AEDT
 • Episode 2, ‘Wish to the Universe: Aired November 7, 5pm AEDT
 • Episode 3, ‘Emotional Rollercoaster: Aired November 7, 5pm AEDT
 • Episode 4 ‘Secrets: Aired November 14, 5pm AEDT
 • Episode 5 ‘Deceptive Lightness‘: Aired November 21, 5pm AEDT
 • Episode 6 ‘TBA’: November 28, 5pm AEDT

What happens in Maxton Hall Season 2?

Maxton Hall filming locations

Based on a trilogy of novels by German author, Mona Kasten, the series charts the enthralling love story of scholarship student Ruby Bell and heir to the Beaufort fashion dynasty, James Beaufort as their opposite worlds collide at the elite private school. Forced to tolerate each other’s existence, the unlikely pair strike up a working relationship that soon turns to something more, when James and Ruby are forced to reckon with the realities of their wildly divergent life paths that have somehow become intertwined.

The official synopsis for the sophomore season of show reads“Those who fly high can also fall low…After their passionate night together in Oxford and her greatest life goal within reach, everything seems to be going perfectly for Ruby. But a stroke of fate in James’ family changes everything and James himself, of all people, brings her back from cloud nine to a harsh reality.”

Where was Maxton Hall filmed?

(Image; Prime Video)

Naturally, the appetite for detail around Maxton Hall and its beloved cast members, including protagonists James Beaufort (Damian Hardung) and Ruby Bell (Harriet Herbig-Matten), has reached an all-time high. And for the like minded among us who might also find themselves hooked on the latest addition to our must-watch shows for interior design lovers, the biggest question remains: where, exactly, is Maxton Hall located in real life?

As with other fan-favourite series that lean heavily on iconic filming locations – think the sun-drenched shores of The White Lotus, the grand estates of The House of Guinness, or the Gothic landscapes set to bring Emerald Fennell’s upcoming Wuthering Heights to life – the world of Maxton Hall is stitched together from real sites across Germany and the UK.

Filming took place mainly across Celle, Hanover, Hamburg and Oxford, mixing Gothic courthouse exteriors with university corridors, elite schools and aristocratic estates. According to Prime Video, Season 2 – based on Mona Kasten’s bestselling sequel Save You – returns to many of the original locations and travels to new areas of Hanover and Hamburg as the world around Ruby and James expands.

Below, we map out every major filming location across Season 1 and Season 2 – including what’s real, what’s fictional and which spots you can actually visit.

Is Maxton Hall a real school?

Marienburg castle near Hanover in Germany was used as a filming location for Prime Video's Maxton Hall.
Marienburg Castle in Lower Saxony, Germany, serves as the main backdrop for Maxton Hall’s school setting. (Image: Wikicommons)

Maxton Hall may not be taking enrollments anytime soon, but its scene-stealing setting is anything but fictional. The UK-based college that we’re introduced to in the novels finds its real-life counterpart in Marienburg Castle, which has surged in popularity since the show began.

Located in Pattensen in the German region of Hanover, the historic estate was built between 1858 and 1867 by King George V as a birthday present for his wife, Queen Marie of Hanover. Today, it forms the backdrop to most of the exterior scenes shown throughout Maxton Hall, but is currently closed to the public until 2030.

“It was really challenging to shoot season 2 because so many fans were there every day trying to take photographs, but the plot was top secret, so it was really a challenge for the team.” Country Director at Prime Video Germany and Austria, Christoph Schneider, told Deadline after filming wrapped.

Where Maxton Hall is filmed in Oxford, England

With a plot that’s centred around Ruby’s dream tertiary education destination – Oxford University – the storied college town features quite heavily throughout both seasons.

From St Hilda’s College in Cowley Place – where Ruby and James stay during their admission interviews – to Turf Tavern and Central Oxford’s High Street and Magdalen Bridge, the medieval alleyways and historic buildings of Oxford are a constant presence. Especially when you get to episode 2, 4 and 6 of season one.

Keen to make the Maxton Hall pilgrimage? You can check out any of the Oxford-based filming locations below:

 • Manos Cafe & Deli: 105 Walton Street, Jericho, Oxford – Ruby’s place of work.
 • Turf Tavern: 4 Bath Place, Oxford – where Ruby’s friends meet on their first trip to Oxford in Season 1 Episode 4.
 • St Hilda’s College: Cowley Place, Oxford
 • High Street & Magdalen Bridge: Central Oxford
 • Oxford University:Wellington Square, Oxford

Where is the Beaufort Villa in Maxton Hall season 2?

James and Lydia Beaufort in their family home in Maxton Hall.
In the show, twins James and Lydia Beaufort reside in a sprawling estate. (Image: Prime Video)

Museum Barberini in Potsdam, Germany, serves as the London HQ of the Beaufort family’s influential fashion empire in the show, but viewers could be forgiven for thinking the neoclassical facade was straight out of a Mayfair main road. Subsequent scenes are filmed in Potsdam City Palace

Where Potsdam becomes London on screen, so too is our sense of place altered when we step into the privileged halls of the Beaufort Villa that houses James, his twin sister Lydia and their parents. It’s within these scenes that fans are taken through some of the most memorable (and emotional) moments of series two. Don’t worry – we won’t spoil anything here!

Again, playing the role of an English country estate, the impressive home’s exterior is slightly further afield. In fact, a lot of family scenes are filmed outside and around Kyritz Ganz Castle in Brandenburg, Germany. The heritage building is located in the Prignitz district on a tiny island that’s completely surrounded by water and only accessible by boat.

Ruby Bell’s family home in Maxton Hall

In stark contrast to the Beaufort Villa, Ruby Bell’s family home is a welcome relief from the elitist world she occupies.

Located in Potsdam’s Neuer Garten (or New Garden) in Germany, the picturesque abode is situated southwest of Berlin between the Holy Lake (Heiliger See) and Jungfernsee. The area, commissioned in 1787 by Frederick William II and designed by gardener Johann August Eyserbeck, serves as a visual reminder of just how different the two protagonists really are – in the best ways.

Fans can visit Ruby’s home, and other familiar locations in Potsdam Germany at the addresses below:

Will there be a season 3 of Maxton Hall?

Everything to know about Maxton Hall season 3
(Image: Prime Video)

Fans of the breakthrough series (and literary trilogy), Maxton Hall, will be thrilled to know that, not only are we getting a season 3, but production is already underway.

Sharing the exciting news in a video posted back in June 9, stars Harriet and Damian confirmed that they were heading back to school – scripts in hand.

While we wait for season 2 to wrap, we can only speculate as to what the future holds for our favourite enemies-to-lovers. However, as with the previous two seasons, the final chapter will be based off Kasten’s final novel, Save Us, and as the synopsis reveals, we have a lot to look forward to.

“Ruby is in shock: Her worst nightmare has come true, and now Oxford and all her dreams that finally seemed within reach are at risk. Worst of all, everything points to James as the one responsible, even after everything they’ve been through together. Ruby thought that she had met the real James—the one who has his own dreams, the one who makes her laugh and makes her heart beat faster with a single glance.

“However, after an explosive fight between the two, they discover a terrible truth. Together, Ruby fights to graduate, as James tries to clear her name at school. But that means once again James must challenge his father and his expectations for him. And despite everything, James still threatens to break under the obligations to his family. Ruby and James must ask themselves if the worlds they live in are perhaps too different after all, or if they can finally find a way back to each other.”

How Klimt’s record-shattering portrait rewrites the list of most expensive paintings https://www.homestolove.com.au/lifestyle/culture-lifestyle/top-10-most-expensive-paintings/ Fri, 21 Nov 2025 04:59:47 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/?p=1296191 The prices behind these paintings are nothing short of astonishing

The post How Klimt’s record-shattering portrait rewrites the list of most expensive paintings appeared first on Homes To Love.

]]>
Gustav Klimt’s Portrait of Elisabeth Lederer has sold for an extraordinary $236.4m (approximately AUD $364 million) at Sotheby’s in New York, positioning it as the second most expensive artwork ever auctioned. The result surpasses all previous Klimt sales and establishes a new standard for modern works entering the uppermost tier of the art market.

Black and white photo of a woman in sideboard, two pattern armchairs and an artwork of a woman hanging on the wall

Painted between 1914 and 1916, the portrait depicts Elisabeth Lederer in a Chinese imperial robe against a densely patterned backdrop, characteristic of Klimt’s late ornamental style. The work survived Nazi seizure, a fire that destroyed much of the Lederer family collection during the Second World War, and decades in private hands before its restitution in 1948. Its rarity and historical trajectory have long made it one of the most scrutinised Klimt portraits to remain outside a museum.

Klimt’s painting now joins an esteemed list of artists whose works have fetched their own record-breaking sums – below, a guide to the ten most expensive paintings ever sold at auction and the astronomical figures they command.

The 10 most expensive paintings ever sold at auction

Leonardo da Vinci, Salvator Mundi (c. 1500)

A painting of a man with long hair in a blue and gold robe dress hangs on a wall in a gold frame with people standing around looking
Images: Getty

Few paintings have provoked as much debate as Salvator Mundi, a work whose authorship, restoration and disappearance from the historical record have made it a cultural phenomenon as much as an artwork. When it sold at Christie’s New York in 2017 for US $450.3 million (approximately AUD $694 million), it became the most expensive painting.

Amedeo Modigliani, Nu couché (1917–18)

Modigliani’s reclining nude series remains his most recognisable contribution to 20th-century art, combining Italian classicism with a distinctly modern feel. The elongated form, the direct gaze and the frankness of the pose have made this painting one of the defining icons of his short career, and sold for AUD $260 million.

Pablo Picasso, Les Femmes d’Alger (Version O) (1955)

Picasso’s dialogue with Delacroix culminates in this final iteration of the Femmes d’Alger series and achieved AUD $250 million. It bridges Cubism with a late, more expressive approach that he developed later in his career. It represents a point where he was deeply engaged in reworking and reimagining classic European artworks.

Andy Warhol, Shot Sage Blue Marilyn (1964)

Artwork hanging in black room of woman with pink skin, yellow hair and blue background
Image: getty

This portrait of Marilyn Monroe is among the most instantly recognisable images in post-war art. Warhol’s controlled palette, paired with the brutality of the screenprint process, distils the actress into pure cultural iconography. With its lauded status, it comes as no surprise it sold for $289 million.

Gustav Klimt, Lady with a Fan (1917–18)

Klimt’s final portrait, painted shortly before his death, reflects his late fascination with East Asian textiles and patterning. The sitter’s pose feels suspended between intimacy and theatre, a hallmark of his last works. The protait reached $166 million.

Mark Rothko, No. 6 (Violet, Green and Red) (1951)

A painting that demonstrates the full maturity of Rothko’s chromatic fields, where colour seems to hover rather than sit on the canvas. Works from this period are increasingly rare and remain pivotal to understanding mid-century American abstraction. It sold for $194 million.

Paul Cézanne, The Card Players (1892–93)

A pink wall, man in white shirt holding up a golden framed painting of two men playing chess
Image: getty

One of the most quietly radical paintings of the 19th century, Cézanne’s depiction of two men absorbed in a game conveys stability and structure through a rigorously constructed composition sold for $341 million. It helped reframe the foundations of modern art.

Jackson Pollock, Number 17A (1948)

Pollock’s 1948 works are the essence of his drip-painting breakthrough. Number 17A embodies the immediacy and controlled chaos that made him the figure of Abstract Expressionism and commanded $274 million.

Willem de Kooning, Interchange (1955)

Interchange sits at the moment de Kooning began shifting between abstraction and figuration, creating a kinetic surface that feels both spontaneous and deliberate. It is often cited as the most important work of his mid-1950s output. The painting sold for $467 million.

Francis Bacon, Three Studies of Lucian Freud (1969)

A man taking a photo of three painting in gold frames ide by side

Bacon’s triptych of Lucian Freud is a psychological confrontation as much as a portrait. Each panel isolates Freud in a cage-like space, intensifying the fraught relationship between the two artists. The work sold for $215 million.

Former test cricket team captain Pat Cummins has recently purchased a 145-year-old home for $16 million just footsteps from the iconic Bronte Beach on a quiet, tree-lined street on Sydney’s Eastern suburbs. Pat Cummins’ new home has five bedrooms, an elaborate facade, a pitched roof, and large windows – and is prime for a renovation.

He may have hung up his test cap, but cricketer David Warner is still enjoying his time in the sun with this jaw-dropping home in Sydney’s eastern suburbs. A spectacular five-storey home hugging the cliffs with views of the sea from every level, the concrete home is a true escape for the former cricketer and his family.

One half of Australian sporting power couple, Mitchell Starc and his wife Alyssa Healy reportedly spent $25 million on a sprawling country acreage in Terrey Hills in 2023. Ricky Ponting’s seven-bedroom mansion in Melbourne’s bayside suburb of Brighton, was home to the sporting family of five for more than a decade. The stately residence sits on approximately 1900sqm and enjoys three expansive levels and private laneway access to the beach, so it’s no surprise it sold after just 30 days on the market for $15.3 million.

After selling a renovated Vaucluse mansion for $12.38 million, the star batsman Steve Smith and his wife Dani Willis successfully flipped yet another property, this time in the beachside suburb of Bronte in Sydney’s east. With raked ceilings soaring above a new open-plan designer kitchen, and an undercover entertaining area with a built-in barbecue kitchen and gas-heated saltwater plunge pool, it seems the cricketer has many skills that extend beyond sports.

Michael Clarke’s tri-level home in Sydney’s Vaucluse may not have cricket nets, but it does have six bedrooms, a swimming pool and a tennis court – and it’s worth around $20 million. Sprawling across three light-filled levels, the c.1940 residence offers multiple contemporary-style living spaces, a rumpus room and gym, while the main bedroom on the upper floor enjoys a private balcony.

On the hunt for practical yet beautiful bathroom styling inspiration? Our resident stylist Sophie Wilson has curated a selection of the finest finishes and fixtures to help you create a relaxing bathroom design. “Creating a beautiful bathroom comes down to more than just tiles and tapware. A sophisticated selection of lighting, towels and accessories adds a layer of quiet luxury.”

Read on for her selection of beautiful bathroom objects to create a spa sanctuary at home.

With a few simple styling tweaks you can create a beautiful bathroom, says H&G’s stylist Sophie Wilson. (Photography: Alana Landsberry)

H&G’s stylist tips to a beautiful bathroom

You don’t always need a full bathroom renovation to get the impact you’re after. With a few thoughtful tweaks, you can transform your bathroom into a relaxing escape.

Simple touches like lighting will make the biggest difference: “Bring in accent lighting to illuminate a mirror or shaving cabinet,” says Sophie. It will soften harsh lines and give the room a more calming effect.

Once you’ve nailed lighting, mirrors are the next simple swap. “For a mirror in the bathroom, I like to choose a framed piece with subtle, eye-catching details that add warmth.”

Your choice in hardware can also transform a room and add character. “A character-filled alternative to regular chrome or popular gold finishes, authentic antique brass tapware is a timeless choice.”

Beautiful bathroom
It’s the simple touches that make all the difference when it comes to bathroom styling. (Photo: Coco Tiles and Mosaics.)

Creating a beautiful bathroom experience, even when renting or on a budget, is all about small moments of luxury, and nothing ups the comfort stakes in a bathroom like a set of luxe towels. “Egyptian cotton, bamboo or cotton all fit the bill.”

Scents also go a long way when it comes to creating a room you want to spend time in. “A scented bar of soap or a beautifully perfumed luxury soap duo is a simple way to elevate practical daily rituals.”

And for the extra luxurious touches, make intentional choices with your everyday pieces. “A delicate handwash in a beautiful glass bottle adds a luxurious edge, or you could consider a careful selection of skincare that will look as stylish on display as it will on skin.”

What are the benefits of linen bedding?

Its natural fibres are breathable and moisture-wicking, keeping you cool in summer, warm in winter and perfectly dry through the night. Linen is naturally hypoallergenic, antibacterial and odor-resistant, making it ideal for anyone with sensitive skin or a penchant for freshness. And if longevity and sustainability matter to you, linen is one of the strongest natural fibres, softening with every wash, and because it’s made from the flax plant, it’s a more eco-conscious choice than many alternatives.

Is it better to sleep on linen or cotton sheets?

It comes down to what feels right for you. Linen is loved for its relaxed, lived-in look, breathability and natural temperature regulation. On the other hand, cotton offers a smoother, crisper feel that classicists can’t resist.

Zac Efron’s Byron Bay eco-retreat starts to take shape https://www.homestolove.com.au/home-tours/zac-efron-byron-bay-home-australia/ Wed, 19 Nov 2025 06:10:21 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/?p=1295933 The award-winning actor has had a long-standing love affair with Australia

The post Zac Efron’s Byron Bay eco-retreat starts to take shape appeared first on Homes To Love.

]]>
And so Byron Bay gains another celebrity resident. The star of Iron Claw, Hairspray, and High School Musical Zac Efron has been enticed by the eco-lifestyle of the Northern Rivers suburb with works about to begin at his six-bedroom off-grid home in the Northern NSW town of Tomewin.

On a rural plot purchased in 2020 for a reported $2 million, Zac Efron’s soon-to-be-built retreat, an hour out of Byron, will be a self-sustaining, zero-waste home, covered with plant ecosystems designed to support insects and help other species thrive. This new build, known as ‘Futurecave‘, was given the green light from the Tweed Shire council in 2024 and is set to start works as early as next year. It won’t be cheap though, with the DA reporting it will cost an additional $2.685 million.

Lush Australian rainforest
Located on 128 hectares of lush Australian rainforest, Zac Efron’s Tomewin home will be a nature-lover’s paradise. (Photo: Getty)

Nestled on the border between Queensland and New South Wales and currently a secluded oasis, Zac Efron’s Byron Bay eco-home in Australia spans 128 hectares with mountains, cliffs, valleys, rock waterfalls, and spring-fed dams with views over the lush rainforest surrounding. He purchased the rural plot after spending time in Australia during the Covid lockdowns in 2020 and while filming his Emmy-winning Netflix series Down to Earth with Zac Efron: Down Under. And clearly Australia’s natural beauty wasn’t all he fell in love with, as Zac-fans will remember this was also the time he famously dated an Australian barista he met at a cafe in Byron Bay.

“He just loves the Australian mentality and attitude, and he just wants to spend time in nature,” says Joost Bakker, the eco-designer Zac employed to build his new eco-escape.

Joost Bakker is a florist-turned-eco activist known for his no-waste living and the Future Food System, a self sustaining, zero-waste, productive house. “It’s not every day of the week that @zacefron asks you to design his home,” he announced on a post to his Instagram.

“Zac fell in love with @futurefoodsystem and then our family home in Monbulk and now wants a home of his own. Best of all he wants me to push my ideas as far as they can go!”

“So here we are – designing and building Zac’s home. It’s a dream come true.”

Hoping to create the “healthiest home on the planet”, Zac has given Joost free rein to try out all of his most unique ideas, only asking that he not cut down a single tree on the property. This includes using hemp bricks, rooftop gardens, and all natural building materials – including oyster shells.

“We’re using the building to get a lot of endangered insects and species back on track,” Joost shared in an interview with Domain. “So we can actually use the building to create habitat rather than take away from it.”

“For the past year we’ve experimented with making hemp blocks, replacing concrete with two materials that restore the environment. Hemp: possibly the best plant on earth at repairing and restoring.”

Troye Sivan puts his Hollywood Hills Mid-Century home on the market https://www.homestolove.com.au/home-tours/troye-sivan-midcentury-los-angeles-house-for-sale/ Wed, 19 Nov 2025 05:25:22 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/?p=1295917 After an eight-year tenure, the Australian singer-songwriter has listed his Los Angeles home for $3.88 million

Troye Sivan has placed his Los Angeles house on the market for US $2.54 million (approximately $3.88 million AUD), inviting attention to a property that pays homage to Mid-Century design with a discreet Hollywood Hills address. Built in 1958 and tucked into a cul-de-sac in a celebrity-favoured pocket of the hills, the three-bedroom, four-bathroom home traces a clear line between classic Californian modernism and the design-literate sensibility Sivan has become known for. For anyone wondering where Troye Sivan lives, the listing marks a notable shift in the singer’s residential footprint.

The “Rush” singer purchased the property in 2017 for US $2.15 (approximately $2.88 million AUD) million and has, at times, listed it for rent. Although not always his primary residence, the house has influenced his broader design choices, including the Melbourne property he revealed in 2021. Spanning roughly 3,200 square feet, arranged around an open plan that privileges natural light and scale. “There’s a strong affinity between Melbourne and LA in terms of climate and architecture. That strain of classic California Mid-Century modernism has been a big influence,” the “Rush” singer shared with Architectural Digest during his 2021 house tour.

With the Troye Sivan’s Los Angeles house now for sale, attention turns to what comes next – where he will live, and which architectural chapter he might choose to inhabit next.

The connection between inside and out is central to the home’s design, drawing sunlight deep into the plan and guiding movement towards the pool, fire pit lounge and outdoor terraces. An attached two-car garage completes the layout.

Additionally, windowed nook at the base of the staircase introduces a gentle circulation into the interior, giving way to the upper floor where a skylit library den provides a more introspective corner.

Ex-cricketer Michael Clarke snaps up a tri-level mansion in Vaucluse https://www.homestolove.com.au/home-tours/michael-clarke-vaucluse-house/ Wed, 19 Nov 2025 04:57:19 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/?p=1295921 It may not have cricket nets, but it does have six bedrooms, a swimming pool and a tennis court

Former Australian cricket captain and podcaster Michael Clarke has reportedly purchased another property in the affluent Sydney suburb of Vaucluse. The ex-cricketer bought a tri-level mansion complete with a swimming pool and tennis court for around $20 million by private treaty, according to The Sydney Morning Herald. Michael already owns a European-inspired home in Vaucluse, which he bought for $13 million back in 2021.

Set on 1185 square metres, the modern Vaucluse estate features six king-sized bedrooms and six and a half bathrooms – plenty of room for him, his partner Arabella Sherborne and Michael’s daughter Kelsey Lee, whom he shares custody with ex-wife Kyly.

The eastern Sydney suburb is also home to a number of other Australian celebrities, including Roxy Jacenko, Kyle Sandilands and Zoe Foster Blake and Hamish Blake.

Sprawling across three light-filled levels, the c.1940 residence offers multiple contemporary-style living spaces by Melissa Collision Design. The open-plan kitchen features Calacatta marble and high-end appliances and connects to a spacious living space with a banquette seat and a custom cocktail bar. Downstairs, there is a lower-level rumpus room and gym, while the main bedroom on the upper floor enjoys a private balcony. All three levels are connected by a sculptural white staircase.

Outside, a gas-heated swimming pool and a full-sized tennis court add to the home’s impressive entertainment capabilities. Property records show that the Vaucluse home last sold for $7 million back in 2007.

Since retiring from cricket back in 2015, Michael Clarke has worked in the commentary box and as the host of Sky Racing’s Big Sports Breakfast for five years before quitting at the start of 2025 to work on his podcast, Beyond23 Cricket.

The post Black Friday 2025 is here: the best live deals on home, furniture and appliances appeared first on Homes To Love.

Black Friday sales 2025 are officially here! What used to be a one-day sale has since expanded, with some of our favourite appliance and furniture brands already dropping prices, including Dyson, Castlery and Miss Amara. For the modern aesthete or the home tech-inclined, Black Friday sale season is the moment to invest, impress, and finally tick off that wishlist.

So far, we’ve seen some huge drops on furniture and appliances, especially in the cleaning and technology space. Dyson is leading the tech deals this year with up to $650 off on selected technology, from vacuums to hair care and air purifiers, while rug brand Double is a clear home favourite, offering up to 40% off sitewide, plus further savings with their spend and save model.

For those looking for new furniture, Koala has launched an enviable 30% off everything sale. There are also huge Black Friday furniture deals at Castlery, James Lane, Sleeping Giant and more.

Whether you’ve been eyeing a particular sofa bed to replace the old one, or keenly waiting for a discounted cleaning appliance, if there’s ever a time to bite the bullet – it’s now.

Black Friday table of contents

From Black Friday appliance deals on major kitchen brands to all kinds of homewares and décor, the deals on offer during the Black Friday sales are often some of the biggest we see all year. Here is everything you need to know about Black Friday sales for 2025, including newly announced sales, editor picks, and frequently asked questions.

Black Friday sales are here, but when is the best time to buy?

Since Black Friday sales have extended to a month-long affair, it’s a fair question to ask – when should you actually buy? Well, that depends on what you’re buying. If you spot a great deal on TVs, soundbars, and electronics, it’s best to buy early as popular items often sell out quickly, and many early discounts match or beat actual Black Friday prices. Large appliances like fridges and dishwashers often see their steepest discounts during Black Friday week, so it’s worth waiting for those major deals. Furniture, however, tends to go on sale earlier, so it’s best to hit buy on any must-have pieces while stocks last.

Black Friday 2025 deals: Editor’s picks

I’m in the midst of upgrading my kitchenware in an effort to disguise myself as a fully functioning adult. I love the whole Our Place range, but am particularly hooked on this chic cookware set in the colour Spice (because a grown-up home still needs a bit of whimsy).

As for furniture, I own the Slideaway sofa bed by Eva, and I cannot recommend it enough! It’s chic and timeless form seamlessly fits into my living space, and I’d be lying if I said I didn’t have it daybed mode most days. Right now Eva is offering free cushion covers with every purchase, meaning you can swap the look of your couch every season, or mood.

How to prepare for Black Friday sales

Step one: prepare your shopping list

If you’re like us, then you also love a good list. Whether that’s a shopping list, a wishlist, or a simple to-do list, we can use this to our advantage.

For those using Black Friday sales for their Christmas shopping (wise choice), make a list of people you’d like to shop for. Once you have your list of friends and family written down, add one or two gift ideas next to each person to guide you as you shop.

For those who are using Black Friday sales to purchase wishlist or big-ticket items at a discount, like a robot vacuum, for example (another great choice), you’ll want to prepare a wishlist for this, too.

Step two: do your research

It’s easy enough to jot down robot vacuum onto your wishlist – and for some, this is enough to prepare for a sale. However, if you have the time, finding the exact model you want to buy before Black Friday sales begin is a good idea. The best way to do this is to read up on product specs, reviews and buyer’s guides to ensure you’ve chosen a product that meets your preferences and needs.

In an era of online interactions, it’s also worth double-checking retailer credibility and reading their Privacy Policy before purchasing. Always look for clear opt-out options if you’re signing up for newsletters or alerts.

Step three: find the best Black Friday sales

It may be obvious, but you’ll want to wait until Black Friday deals are live before shopping for too many gifts or big-ticket items. As mentioned, some Black Friday deals occur earlier than November 28 – so it’s good to keep an eye out on your favourite retailers to see when their sales drop. Or better yet, bookmark this page to keep up to date with all Black Friday sales happening right now.

Everything you need to know about Black Friday for 2025

Black Friday 2025 sales have started. So here is everything you need to know about the major sale event, including important dates and brands to keep your eye out for. Happy shopping!

When is Black Friday 2025?

This year, Black Friday lands on November 28, with Cyber Monday following on December 1. However, many retailers like to lean into the shopping fun for the month by dropping their Black Friday deals early and extending offers past Cyber Monday, too. Make sure you bookmark this page for all the updates on the best Black Friday sales 2025.

How big are Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales compared to other major sale events?

Black Friday sales was once a phenomenon exclusive to the US, where it began as a sale event after Thanksgiving. With Cyber Monday following hot on its heels, many retailers began offering deals across the whole weekend. Over the past few years, the Black Friday sales weekend has gained popularity in Australia – and if you’re like us and love a good sale, then this is excellent news.

When comparing the best Black Friday sales and Cyber Monday sales to other major sale events in Australia, like Boxing Day or End of Financial Year sales, they used to be considered on a similar scale (savings-wise and based on the amount of retailers that tap into this sale). But the timing of Black Friday and Cyber Monday (right before the Christmas period), means many retailers now see it as the biggest sales event of the year – particularly in a cost-of-living crisis, where shoppers are looking to save on brands they already love.

Is there a Black Friday sale in Australia?

Yes, Australia has had Black Friday sales since 2013, following the traditional Black Friday sales in the United States on the Friday after Thanksgiving. While Black Friday is relatively new in Australia compared to Boxing Day or End of Financial Year sales, it has become one of the most coveted sale events of the year, with Black Friday offering numerous deals across categories including home, technology, fashion, beauty, travel and more.

Are sales cheaper on Black Friday or Cyber Monday?

In recent years, many retailers combine Black Friday and Cyber Monday (which follows it) into one giant “Cyber Weekend” sale, although generally Black Friday sales offer bigger discounts across a wider range of products, both in-store and online. Many brands and retailers extend their sales across the week or month, with home brands often maintaining the same discounts.

Which shops have the best Black Friday sales?

While most online stores do some form of sale during Black Friday and Cyber Monday, some popular Australian retailers always stand out. Look at retailers like Amazon, The Good Guys, and Appliances Online for discounts on home appliances and electronics. You can also check out Temple & Webster and Castlery for great sales on furniture, bedding, and décor. These stores often advertise special deals online and in-store during Black Friday sales, so it’s smart to compare prices before you buy.

One tip is to sign up for store newsletters, as some brands will send out early access codes. Keep this page bookmarked as we will be updating it regularly for the best sales and exclusive deals.

Why everyone’s talking about Swedish Death Cleaning https://www.homestolove.com.au/interiors/swedish-death-cleaning/ Wed, 19 Nov 2025 01:59:17 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/?p=1295875 Here’s why more people are letting go while they’re still here

The post Why everyone’s talking about Swedish Death Cleaning appeared first on Homes To Love.

]]>
Swedish Death Cleaning is not as morbid as you may think. A method of decluttering that originated in Sweden, it is the practice of relinquishing your worldly possessions while you’re still around to ease the significant burden placed on your family members upon your passing. Yes, that would mean sorting through that pile of forgotten paperwork in your garage, the attic that’s filled to the brim with items that could be considered clutter, and the random spare bedroom wardrobe you’re too afraid to even peer into, lest it burst its banks and never be able to close again.

Popularised by Margareta Magnusson in her book The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning, the cleaning method also known as Döstädning implores us to reassess the items we truly value and renounce the ones we don’t, to make the lives of our children easier.

What sets Swedish Death Cleaning apart from your regular decluttering or spring cleaning is that it focuses less on how the items make you feel, and instead considers how each of the items would make your loved ones feel. It is the art of decentering ourselves from our own lives, even in death – a selfless gift we can bequeath to our next of kin.

A colourful , Anna Spiro-designed living room
Live life colourfully in this Anna Spiro abode. (Photography: Tim Salisbury)

So should you clean out your things now so no-one has to do it later? While we may think that each and every item we’ve held onto for years will hold as much significance to others as it once did to you, can we ask that of our offspring – the arduous task of sorting through our long lost memories piece by painful piece, especially when they’ll be navigating a new world without us?

Is it selfish to want to hold onto relics of a past life until the final toll? Or would we be doing ourselves a disservice to neatly pack up a life well-lived and ship it away while we’re still around to enjoy it? Is it not one of life’s joys, to fill our surroundings with objects collected from travels, pieces that have brought us joy, and memories from time spent with friends and family?

There’s a way to do it without giving up your sense of self for the sake of convenience. Start with the messiest spaces and go room by room, or zone by zone. If you come across an item that still brings you joy or you truly think it will bring joy to your next of kin, treasure it. But if it is just taking up space in your home with no tangible or emotional benefit, ditch it. Plus, there’s something to be said for a clean slate and less clutter to improve your quality of life in the present moment.

For more, mother-daughter duo Melissa and Isabella offer their generational takes on Swedish Death Cleaning.

Simple recipes ideas that make use of leftover Christmas ham https://www.homestolove.com.au/recipes/leftover-christmas-ham-recipe-ideas/ Tue, 18 Nov 2025 23:39:08 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/?p=1295800 Boring toasties begone!

The post Simple recipes ideas that make use of leftover Christmas ham appeared first on Homes To Love.

It’s a tale as old as time: after all the fuss of Christmas preparation, all the weeks of panic cleaning and present wrapping and Christmas cracker stuffing and dessert baking and family coordinating… by the time Christmas day has finally ended, it seems all you have to show for it is a happy family – hooray – and what seems to be three metric tonnes of leftover Christmas ham.

But before you sigh that you’ve already done enough this holiday season and you’re happy just nibbling on boring ham toasties – don’t. There are plenty of simple recipes you can make that use up leftover ham without the need for the extra ingredients, hours in the kitchen or more trips to the grocery store.

Here are some of our favourite easy recipes that use up leftover Christmas ham.

An easy pea and ham soup

pea-ham-soup

This easy, hearty soup is filled with simple ingredients that have a big flavour. It’s filled with fresh vegetables and chicken stock and only takes 15 minutes of prep time, meaning that you can relax on the couch and enjoy the peace and quiet. It’s a delicious and comforting meal that’ll have your tastebuds watering.

A comforting potato-topped pie

A flavour-packed pie is the best comfort food after a long day, and this potato-topped dish is exactly what you’ll need after the havoc of Christmas. Steve Cumper’s recipe does call for chicken thighs, so you’ll just need to skip the first step, swapping the chicken for ham.

A classic ham and egg pie

Is there a better pairing than bacon or ham and eggs? If you believe Country Style’s resident chef, Steve Cumper, then no there’s not. This simple pie recipe uses frozen pastry, your leftover ham, cream and eggs and takes only a few minutes in the oven. But again, this recipe originally called for bacon, so you should swap it out for ham.

An indulgent stuffed filo pastry (BYO ham!)

Stuffing-filled pastry

This delicious filo recipe allows stuffing to have its moment in the sun. You can also add as many or as few ingredients as you prefer, either way, the method remains similar. Just make sure to use ham where it asks for bacon.

A flavoursome French-style leek and ham tart

Leek flamiche

Who doesn’t love a leek and onion tart? While this recipe by Annie Smithers’ is vegetarian, you should add ham as your protein, and you can always use store-bought puff pastry instead of homemade dough if that’s what you have on hand.

A classic caramelised onion and tomato quiche (just add ham)

This baked egg dish is a favourite for a reason, and all it needs is a little bit of Christmas magic: ham. Flavoured with caramelised onions – which aren’t as tricky as you might think to make – and a tomato-egg base, it’s a simple recipe that won’t make you pull your hair out.

A spot cleaner can be a real game changer when it comes to lounges, carpets and other areas of the house. But prices and quality can vary wildly, so I was keen to put three popular options to the test: the Bissell SpotClean, Kmart’s “dupe” Anko Spot Cleaner (also sold at Target), and the Shark StainStriker.

Let me start by divulging this vital information: I have a puppy and a husband. He’s a tradie (the latter, obviously) meaning he comes home in dust-ridden clothes and settles on our sofa in them, usually arriving before I’m there to tell him not to. Sometimes, he even rolls around on it with the aforementioned puppy, who is also guilty of bringing the odd goat horn, bully stick or leaf pile up there with him. Yes, all on our beautiful, fairly expensive, light greige sofa.

Explore our cleaning guides below:

It recently came to my attention that after much puppy/husband activity, our sofa was not so beautiful, or even so light-greige anymore. Admittedly, I am guilty of the occasional Sunday night meal on the sofa in front of the TV – a forbidden pleasure never permitted to me as a child – so perhaps the two boys in my household are not solely to blame. Alas, I have been looking forlornly at our sofa and all of its dirt spots for many months now and wondering what can be done.

Enter the carpet and upholstery spot cleanr; a magical tool that simultaneously soap-washes your fabrics while sucking up all the gross stuff. Keep scrolling to read my review on these viral spot cleaners.

Best spot cleaner roundup

What is the best spot cleaner?

In the Australian market, there are three front runners: the Bissell Spot Clean, Shark StainStriker, and the (viral) Anko — Kmart and Target — spot cleaner. In what was some form of divine intervention, I was lent all three to put to the test and, aside from getting a very clean sofa at the end, here’s my review of how it all went down (as well as a bit about each spot cleaner).

The Bissell SpotClean

Bissell Spot Clean upholstery cleaner

Bissell SpotClean

Bissell has long been making and perfecting their range of upholstery, carpet, and spot cleaners, with designs targeting pets, cars, and all-round jobs. For this review, we are referring to what is probably their most popular model: the Bissell SpotClean carpet cleaner.

It retails for $269 and comes with various tools, brushes, and sample-size formulas. It’s designed to be totally portable – enough to fit in and be manoeuvred around a car – and exactly the correct dimensions to sit on a (carpeted) stair tread.

The Anko Kmart spot cleaner

The Anko spot cleaner, available at Kmart and Target.

Anko spot cleaner

$99 at Target

A much cheaper alternative, Anko’s version retails for just $99, a feature that saw it go viral and quickly sell out when it was first released in Kmart and Target.

Like the Bissell model I reviewed, the Anko spot cleaner comes with the unit and various accessories and attachments, including a vertical nozzle, vacuum floor heads an attached scrub brush, and even dog brushes, so you can use it to wash your four-legged friend. Dimensions-wise it is very similar to the Bissell and comes in at much the same weight.

Weight: 3.4kg

Sizes: 30.7cm H x 29.2cm W x 15.2cm D

Key features:

 • 3-metre power cord

The Shark StainStriker

Shark StainStriker spot cleaner.

Shark StainStriker portable carpet and upholstery cleaner

$249.99 at Amazon

Cult cleaning brand Shark has also made an impression with their upholstery spot cleaner: the StainStriker. And with a name like that, how could I not try it out?

The Shark StainStriker spot cleaner comes with an integrated crevice tool (love that), as well as a stain tool, wide stain tool, pet tool (for cleaning up stains with…um…solids?), a bottle of Carpet Xpert Deep Clean Pro, and one of OxyMultiplier. The cord length sits in between Anko and Bissell at 3.6 metres, and boasts a nice and compact design that comes in at just a little above the others.

Weight: 3.943kg

Sizes: 30cm H x 30cm W x 26cm D

Colour: White

Key features:

 • 3.6-metre cord
 • Dual-activated stain removal

Bissell SpotClean vs Anko Spot Cleaner vs Shark StainStriker: which is better?

To be honest, on an operational level, the differences between the Bissell SpotClean, Anko spot cleaner, and Shark StainStriker are fairly minimal and come down to four things: the brush sizes, the cord length, the spray function, and the cost. However, there was one final factor that would later come into play: the product’s lifespan. But more on that below.

Brush size

While Anko’s model comes with more tools, Bissell’s ‘equivalent’ tool (i.e. the one with the scrubbing-brush-like head) is slightly larger in size. For a sofa, this didn’t bother me much, but if a carpet or even a rug were the husband-and-puppy victim, I would probably prefer Bissell’s larger attachment. I will also say that Anko’s accessories were difficult to swap out and I almost broke a nail several times. Neither issue was a concern at all with the Shark StainStriker, which comes with both a regular and wide brush, which may even prove enough to motivate me to tackle our bedroom carpet one day… Plus, I love Shark’s pet tool, which has a chamber to capture all the solid-ish yuck should an ‘accident’ occur.

Cord length

Again, a fairly minimal detail, but considering I live in a circa 1970s-ish apartment where power outlets are few and far between, this is a consideration I would be forced to make. Bissell’s cord was the longest at 4.5 metres, followed by Shark’s 3.6 metres, then Anko’s 3 metres. At first, I didn’t think this would be too much of a problem, despite having to create a hazard across our kitchen doorway with the cord, but I really noticed the difference. For me, Bissell wins out here: the more cord, the merrier. It also meant I had the extra wiggle (or spray) room needed without having to twist the machine at awkward angles or hold it while I worked (none of them are light).

The spray function

All three machines work by spraying soapy water onto your sofa/carpet/rug/car seat and sucking it back up as you scrub. This means that no matter which you use, you’ll end up with a slightly damp surface for a few hours. However, Anko’s spray function is noticeably strong and soaks through more, which could be a con for those who have poor ventilation (and therefore drying ability), or kids/pets who are unlikely to be able to keep off while the freshly washed item dries.

The cost

This is by far the biggest draw card for Anko — with an almost identical result it would be hard to say no to $150+ in savings.

The product’s lifespan

Last but most importantly, which of these products lasts the distance? It’s all well and good to clean up a cheeky pasta sauce spill here or a dirty dog pawprint there, but I need this thing to put in the hours without breaking a sweat…or just breaking. Which, unfortunately, the Anko model would eventually do. Twice.

Yes, it’s true. I cannot recommend an Anko Spot Cleaner. Many reviewers have had excellent experiences with theirs, but sadly my first one had a trigger malfunction, and its replacement suffered the same fate, at no fault of my own might I add.

The Kmart Anko spot cleaner in action on a white boucle sofa.

If you’ve bought into the white boucle trend, you’re going to want to read on. (Photo: Kmart)

The verdict: is it worth getting a spot cleaner?

For me, it is a resounding yes. As annoying as they are, puppy and husband are not going anywhere and have proven they can only be tamed so much. So for my household, a spot cleaner is a literal miracle in small appliance form.

I can confidently say that both the Bissell SpotClean and the Shark StainStriker would be equally great choices. As mentioned, I was let down by Anko’s spot cleaner but I thoroughly enjoyed it up until then, and many have nothing but shining reviews for it – plus, the cost is hard to say no to!

What about other brands?

This review focuses on the three spot cleaners I got to test out from Bissell, Shark and Anko (Kmart or Target). But if you want to shop around more, here are some other spot cleaners on the market in Australia that have stood out to us.

Vax Platinum SpotWasher
(VACSC21E) is a top-selling spot cleaner.

Vax Platinum Spot Wash cleaner

$298.95 at Amazon

This spot cleaner combines powerful suction and deep cleaning to remove spills and stains on carpet, upholstery, car interiors and even hardwood floors. It has an average rating of 4.5 stars from over 320 reviews on The Good Guys website, where it’s also listed as a “Top Seller”.

“Honestly it exceeded my expectations. I purchased in preparation for a baby on the way [in a] carpeted house however, I have already used it on car seats, carpet spots, an armchair and more,” one customer shared in a detailed 5-star review, adding, “I suggest using only a drop of the soap provided because otherwise it’s a soapy mess and more work to try and remove. Sometimes I use it without soap too for fresh spills. Would recommend.”

Weight: 3.9kg

Sizes: 42.5cm H x 26.5cm W x 39.5cm D

Colour: Red

Key features:

 • 4.5-metre cord
 • 1.5-metre hose with self-cleaning function
 • Multi-surface and hard-floor attachments
 • 2-year warranty

Also available at:

Karcher SE 3-18 Ultra Clean Compact Cordless Spot Cleaner.

Karcher SE 3-18 cordless spot cleaner

$408.18 at Amazon

Karcher is another brand that has garnered interest for its spot cleaners. It only had a handful of reviews on The Good Guys, but they were all 4- or 5-stars when we checked and it has a 4.7-star average from over 60 customer reviews on the Karcher website, where one customer even said it was “better than my old Bissell”.

As a further comparison to the Bissell spot cleaner we tested, this is a cordless model with a long 1.9m hose, and has a larger water tank capacity (1.7L fresh and 2.9L dirty). So you could weigh that up against the price.

Weight: 3.64kg

Sizes: 31.7cm H x 24cm W x 35cm D

Colour: Yellow

Key features:

 • Cordless operation with 18V battery and a fast charger included
 • 1.9-metre hose

Kogan StainClean Carpet and Upholstery Spot Cleaner.

Kogan StainClean Carpet and Upholstery Spot Cleaner

Kogan’s brand of spot cleaner has a 4.7-star rating from over 200 customer reviews, with value for money commonly mentioned as a positive feature and average suction power noted in some of the recent lower-rated reviews.

“Small compact and very efficient,” one customer shared in a 5-star review.

Weight: 4.5kg

Sizes: 31.7cm H x 24cm W x 35cm D

Get ready, because the epic second instalment of Wicked is almost here. Set to hit screens on Thursday, Wicked: For Good will bring fans the same star-studded cast, big musical numbers and jaw-dropping sets that earned the film a whopping $250 million at the box office, two Academy Awards and the title of most successful Broadway film adaptation of all time.

Directed by Jon M. Chu and starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, the cinematic retelling of the hit musical wows in every aspect, but particularly in terms of its set design and world-building. In the first film, Chu introduces us to a breathtakingly grand and enchanting Oz, with soaring ceilings and curvaceous architecture; the same Oz that was created from an approximately $230 million budget.

Here, we take a look at the creation of Oz, from film locations to the film’s production designer, and marvel at Wicked‘s incredible set design.

Where were Wicked and Wicked: For Good filmed?

The magical world of Oz was largely created within Sky Studios Elstree in Hertfordshire, London, which is also where the upcoming Wuthering Heights movie was filmed. In creating the grandiose world of Oz, production took over all of Sky Studios’ 13 sound stages, as well as another six at the nearby Leavesden Studios – where all the Harry Potter movies were filmed – according to Radio Times. A further three back lots were also built to create exterior sets, with their construction taking up to five months.

Other film locations include the small English village of Ivinghoe, where Munchkinland was created, as well as a nursery in Norfolk, where nine million tulips were planted for Munchkinland.

Who designed the sets of Wicked and Wicked: For Good?

British production designer Nathan Crowley designed the jaw-dropping sets of Wicked and Wicked: For Good, and cited Wicked as easily the largest film he’s ever worked on. And, as impossibly grand as Oz appears in the film, the set was created, mostly, without CGI.

All in all, the creation of Oz took around six to seven months and a crew of around 1000 people, with the film’s sets spanning 19 sound stages and three giant back lots.

Crowley, who was behind the set design of The Dark Knight and Interstellar, imbued Oz with Americana-style retro-futurism in the form of colossal animatronics and curvaceous details, as exemplified by the 32-tonne steamer train, the Emerald City Express.

“The Wizard of Oz is an American fairy tale, so you need America in it,” he told Radio Times. “A big train in an endless Midwestern barley field is a very American image, so then I was in the business of growing barley as well!”

Where can I watch the trailer for Wicked: For Good?

You can watch the finale trailer for Wicked: For Good here.

When does Wicked: For Good come out?

Wicked: For Good is set to be released on Thursday, November 20, here in Australia, although some cinemas are offering advance screenings on Wednesday, November 19.

Nestled in Sydney’s Northern Beaches, this 1910s sandstone cottage is a masterclass in restored heritage charm. The owners, a professional couple with two young daughters, made the move from a steep block in nearby Whale Beach to this more level, greenery-wrapped property in 2024.

While their former home boasted sweeping views, it was the connection between house and garden that drew them here. But despite the appeal, the house was dated and in need of attention.

Enter interior designer Alexandra Mason of Studio aem, who the family brought on board to infuse the home with warmth and convenience. “The family is creative and the girls love their art and craft,” says Alexandra. “They needed a home that could allow self-expression without having to be too precious.”

Their brief was clear: preserve the soul of the home but improve its liveability. Along with more kitchen and pantry space, they were after “hardy and durable”.

A raked ceiling and sandstone walls were carefully restored, respecting the home’s heritage. An earthy palette with leather and timber is reflected in the owners’ existing furniture selection, including an Arthur G sofa and Vitra ‘Noguchi’ coffee table. Ceiling, doors and windows painted Dulux Lexicon Quarter. Artwork on mantel by Elizabeth Sullivan. Floor lamp, Bloomingdales Lighting. (Photography: Prue Ruscoe | Styling: Olga Lewis)

To expand the kitchen, the designer began by demolishing an adjoining poky bathroom.

“Upon removing the ceiling, we discovered the opportunity to follow the existing gabled roofline and introduce a dramatic sense of height.”

(Photography: Prue Ruscoe | Styling: Olga Lewis)

What began as a relatively modest update of the kitchen and bathrooms soon evolved into a full restoration. “Due to the age and period of the house, it became clear that a more detailed, sensitive approach was needed to honour the home’s history,” says Alexandra.

To make the home more functional, walls were reconfigured to create better flow and more storage. A dark, central part of the house was opened up with raked ceilings and a new skylight.

Looking to highlight original features, Alexandra removed dated render and paint from walls to reveal and restore original stonework, enhanced timber-framed windows with deep sandstone sills and preserved floorboards. Any new materials added were in keeping with the owners’ desire for “earthy, natural tones with a slightly rustic character”.

Layering in some of that character in the kitchen, she installed timber beams to the ceiling and specified a textured microcement rangehood with decorative mouldings, an AGA olive green cooker, honed Austral Dream dolomite benchtops and aged-metal hardware.

At the end of the kitchen sits the owners’ favourite feature: an eat-in dining nook. Framed by a large picture window, it has become an inviting space for family meals with views over the tropical front garden and glimpses of Pittwater.

Four bedrooms, an ensuite, laundry and storeroom complete the floorplan – but the standout is the generous family bathroom. Once a compact ensuite, it now offers all the ambience of a wellness retreat at home. Sandstone, travertine and terracotta add layers of warmth and texture, with a copper bath a star feature.

“I am in love with all aspects of the house, but I have particularly taken to the terracotta flooring in the bathroom and the freestanding bath,” says Alexandra. “The owners also love the connection to the side garden, which enhances the indoor-outdoor feel,” says Alexandra.

THIS IS THE LIFE

A connection to nature was an important theme. “The owners love how the design integrates the outdoors, particularly the side garden and the flow between interior and exterior spaces, creating a serene, harmonious environment,” says Alexandra. “These thoughtful choices and features express their vision of a peaceful, character-rich family home.”

From chiselled-in brass power outlet covers to hand-reinstated sandstone on the rebuilt front verandah, every detail of this nature-immersed family home has been considered. “This was a true labour of love,” says Alexandra.

“The owners were open, trusting and deeply appreciative of the process. They said ‘yes’ more than they questioned – and that made all the difference.”

The lush garden surrounding the cottage was a major drawcard for the family of four when they first inspected the home. Roof painted to match Dulux Duralloy Olde Pewter. Weatherboard painted Porter’s Paints Flagstone. (Photography: Prue Ruscoe | Styling: Olga Lewis)

How to find the best Black Friday furniture deals

“For me, Black Friday is one of the best times to finally hit add to cart on those big-ticket, wishlist items you’ve been umming and ahhing about all year,” says shopping writer Rachel Weisz. “The key is to have a clear idea of what you’re looking for – there’s nothing worse than feeling overwhelmed come sale season. And if you’re hunting for furniture, there’s probably something specific you’re after anyway. One tip for scoring the best deals is to sign up for store newsletters, as some brands send out early access codes.”

Additionally, keep this page bookmarked as we’ll be updating it regularly with the best sales and exclusive deals.

When do the Black Friday furniture deals start?

Black Friday furniture deals typically start on or before Black Friday. However, many retailers like to lean into the shopping fun for the month by dropping early deals and extending offers past Cyber Monday, too. Make sure you bookmark this page for all the updates on the major furniture sales event.

When is Black Friday 2025?

Black Friday in 2025 lands on November 28, with Cyber Monday following on December 1.

Is it better to buy before or after Black Friday?

With Black Friday now technically a month-long shopping event, it’s hard to known when is the best time to buy. For those hunting Black Friday furniture deals 2025, it’s important to note that furniture stores often mark down items early, but stock can sell out fast, so it’s best to secure your favourites sooner rather than later. Unlike appliance or electronic brands, furniture brands tend to keep their sale at the same price month-long, with the exception of some brands looking to get rid of their clearance items.

When to order your Christmas ham for 2025 – don’t miss the cut-off https://www.homestolove.com.au/christmas/when-to-order-christmas-ham/ Tue, 18 Nov 2025 00:12:40 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/?p=1295377 Christmas ham is the hero of the table - and the one item you absolutely can’t leave to the last minute

The post When to order your Christmas ham for 2025 – don’t miss the cut-off appeared first on Homes To Love.

]]>
Wondering when the right time to order your Christmas ham is? It can feel like Christmas sneaks up on you every year, but by getting on top of all your essential Christmas tasks well ahead of time, you can actually get to enjoy the big day.

But as for when to order your Christmas ham, by the time the question has crossed your mind, it’s the perfect time to place your order. You should order your ham from the butcher as early as possible, from three to six weeks before Christmas day, to give your butcher enough time to arrange. Some places close orders in the first weeks of December, with Vic’s Meats noting a hard deadline of December 9th for Christmas ham orders. Others, like Borrowdale at The Meat Store, close December 18th, while The Herdsman Market is accepting orders until 21st December.

In any case, it’s recommended to place your order as soon as possible, as popular retailers are likely to sell out even before shut off dates.

What to do with leftover Christmas ham?

Its a tale as old as time: we want to make sure we have enough ham to feed everyone at the table (including any last minute drop ins), but by the time the sun sets on Christmas Day, everyone is stuffed full to the brim with the delicious sweet baked meat, and there’s a bunch leftover. So for the next week, we cycle through an endless array of meals that repurpose the leftover ham.

From ham toasties, to ham and cheese omelettes, ham fried rice, pea and ham soup and plenty more, there’s no end to the ham in sight. Here are some of our favourite recipes for leftover ham.

How long can I keep my leftover Christmas ham in the fridge?

An opened package of Christmas ham on the bone can stay good for up to two weeks, provided it is stored in the fridge and wrapped in a ham bag, pillowcase or tea towel that has been soaked in a solution of vinegar and water. But, once it’s been sliced, the official verdict is only three days. After that, there’s no need to throw out the leftover ham – it can easily be sliced and frozen for soups and casseroles for when the weather cools.

Whether you’re the self-appointed chef of your household or you like to leave that hat for someone else to wear, there are likely not many days that pass without the need for a chopping board. The first checkpoint ingredients pass through on the ritualistic path to becoming a meal: the chopping board is the foundational staple of the kitchen. But the kitchen essential is anything but humble, with beautiful chopping boards fast becoming the highlight of the space. With the colourful, recycled plastic slabs in shades of green, blue, orange and pink, becoming the newest style must-have, they make the perfect host or hostess gift, housewarming present or Christmas stocking filler.

So, to help you dice veggies and serve cheese platters with style and ease, or treat your closest friends and family to the hottest kitchen essential right now, we’ve rounded up some of the best colourful chopping boards around that put design, functionality and environmental-responsibility front and centre.

Meater meat thermometer

$199 at Amazon

Best for: Perfectly cooked meat

“I tend to avoid cooking meat, simply because I almost always get it wrong. Why is my chicken either rubbery or verging on too pink? How hard can it be? My avoidance means that we either end up eating tofu, or that the job is left to my husband, who subscribes to the ‘it’s not a meal without meat’ party. A little while ago he was gifted one of these nifty gadgets. It boasts Bluetooth and WiFi connectivity and makes cooking meat a breeze.

Admittedly, they do fall on the pricier side, but I will happily invest in anything that gets him excited about making me food and it’s 20% off right now.” — Lucy Lindfield, Digital Editor

Materials: Stainless steel with heat-resistant ceramic handle

Key features:

 • Bluetooth and WiFi connectivity
 • Ensures perfectly cooked meat every time
 • Alerts you based on temperature or time

UGREEN USB A to USB C braided nylon cable

$12.99 at Amazon

Best for: saving your relationships

“Phone chargers are always disappearing in my household – getting borrowed, left in Airbnbs, hiding in drawers – making them one of the most covetable pieces of equipment we own. If you’ve ever debated with your partner or kids who gets first dibs on the charger (“Mine is on 15 per cent!”…“Well mine is on 6 per cent!!!”), might I suggest you invest in a few extra cords to save your relationships, and your sanity?

I’m picking up a couple of these in the Black Friday Amazon sale – they’re cheap, do the trick, and at 3m, are long enough to reach from one side of the bed to the other. I prefer the USB A to USB C, as it can plug into all my vintage Apple wall chargers as well as my new phone, but make sure you choose the one that works for your devices!” — Bella Westaway, Senior Content Producer

Never fear, the new Kindle Paperwhite (2024 edition) has just been discounted in Amazon’s Black Friday sales and you can bet I’ll be taking advantage. It’s their fastest model in their wheelhouse, offers a 12-week battery life and the new screen promises a higher-contrast display, glare-free. That will do quite nicely on my long train journeys through France! My quilt is no match for my death-roll-like sleep movements, leaving me exposed to the cold in the middle of the night. Having that little extra room will allow me to stay cosy all night long.” — Anna Campbell, Social Media Content Producer

Billionaire Adrian Portelli finally offloads ‘The Block’ resort on Phillip Island https://www.homestolove.com.au/the-block/adrian-portelli-the-block-2024-giveaway/ Mon, 17 Nov 2025 03:59:52 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/?p=1266719 The 'Lambo Guy' has officially given away all five houses

The post Billionaire Adrian Portelli finally offloads ‘The Block’ resort on Phillip Island appeared first on Homes To Love.

]]>
A year on from buying the entire Block resort, Australian billionaire Adrian Portelli has found five new owners for each of his five Phillip Island houses. The well-known entrepreneur and car enthusiast gave away each of the homes via a livestreamed giveaway through his company LCMT+, with the giveaway reportedly attracting more than 20,000 online viewers and a number of people on site.

Adrian, who placed the shocking $3.5 million bid on Maddy and Charlotte’s House 1 in 2024 to make them the youngest-ever winners of The Block, held a competition back in December to offload the Phillip Island properties he bought for over $15 million. However, with a prize option of The Block resort or $8 million in tax-free cash, the lucky winner walked away with the cash, leaving Adrian with the resort.

While the Melbourne-based businessman initially expressed plans to keep the residences and potentially host events there, it became clear he wanted to offload all five properties. After a seemingly unsuccessful search for a buyer, Adrian created a second Block giveaway and announced the five winners over the weekend.

According to realestate.com.au, the winners were 43-year-old teacher Parvin, 22-year-old West Australian Josh, a woman named Martha, a mother named Donna, and 50-year-old Sydney-based father, Jason.

In the lead-up to the giveaway, Adrian shared a video showing the changes he has made to the Phillip Island compound, including adding security cameras, increasing the fence height and installing heat pumps for the swimming pool.

Who won The Block 2024 giveaway?

The winner of Adrian Portelli’s original The Block giveaway in 2024 was 34-year-old Holly from Ballarat, who decided to take the $8 million cash over the Phillip Island resort.

Adrian’s company, LCMT+, originally decided against another giveaway of the resort due to the cost of promoting and running one. “I think everyone forgets that the resort is one half of the cost. So to run a promotion like that costs double the amount we have paid for it in marketing expenses and running it and permits,” Adrian said.

However, the billionaire changed his mind after being unsuccessful in his search for a buyer for all five properties, leading to another giveaway of each of the properties in November 2025.

When was The Block 2024 giveaway?

After buying up all five houses at The Block auction in November, Adrian announced his first mega giveaway a few days later via Instagram.

“Under New Management! And as mayor of Portelli town, I would like to announce a world first. LET’S GIVE AWAY A FKN RESORT!!!” he wrote on Instagram. “1 Giveaway – 1 Prize – Winner takes the whole resort OR take $8,000,000 Instant Tax-Free Cash! Let the games begin.”

While the huge prize was set to be announced via live stream – and even in-person attendance at 119 Justice Road, Cowes – on 26th December 2024, Adrian made a last-minute change due to “technical difficulties”. It was then scheduled for 27th December 2024, at 8:30 pm AEDT, and live-streamed via the LCMT+ Facebook page.

We didn’t see that coming…or did we?

Why did Adrian Portelli give away The Block?

This is not the first time Adrian Portelli has given away his purchases on The Block. In 2023, he was the buyer of Steph and Gian‘s record-breaking Japandi home, which he then gave away in a similar competition via his promotions and giveaway company, LMCT+. In 2023, he also purchased Eliza and Liberty’s house for $4.3 million and Kyle and Leslie‘s house for $3.1 million.

Eliza and Liberty‘s house was also raffled off, but the winner chose instead to take the $2 million cash on offer, leaving Adrian to sell the home via more traditional methods. The house sold at auction in April 2024 for $3.245 million, considerably less than what Adrian paid.

In 2024, Adrian announced that the 20th Block season would be his last appearance on the show, and that he wanted to “go out with a bang.” Now, the billionaire is set to appear in the new Channel 7 series, My Renovation Rules.

Is a robot vacuum worth it?

Robot vacuums have come a long way since they first launched in Australia. From improvements in suction power and AI obstacle detection technology to new functionalities like mopping and the ability to self-empty and clean, robot vacuums are no longer just a gimmick – there are genuinely helpful products on the market.

“Robotic vacuums have come a long way in a short time, so now that we’ve established a baseline of quality, we’re seeing a lot of excitement and enthusiasm for the latest technology advancements in our newest range of robotic vacuums,” Karen Powell, Head of ECOVACS for Australia and New Zealand told Homes to Love.

She said survey data showed that robotic vacuums and mops were among the most popular smart appliances in Australia.

“More people are looking to buy a robot vacuum than they are a new TV, coffee machine or air purifier,” she added.

“Today, robot vacuums have the ability to compete with traditional vacuums in terms of suction power, are able to move around the house thanks to proprietary AI obstacle detection technology, and can both mop and vacuum in a single pass,” Karen said. “You can now set schedules remotely and essentially leave it to its own devices as it cleans autonomously.”

“It’s been a big feat, but I genuinely believe Australians are responding to this and realising the huge benefits such products can bring to their day-to-day lives.”

What to consider when choosing a robot vacuum

There is a big difference between a very basic robot vacuum (which might have trouble bumping into things, for example) and those with more advanced technology. So when you want to find the best robot vacuum for your home, here are six key factors to consider:

– Performance and performance features
– Efficiency
– Warranty and maintenance requirements
– Design and size
– Reviews
– Other notable features or elements, especially if there is a feature you really want

We consider all of these factors to determine our pick of the best robot vacuum cleaners, so you may just find one here that fits the bill for your home.

Beloved British treat Percy Pigs to arrive in Australia https://www.homestolove.com.au/lifestyle/percy-pigs-australia-coles/ Mon, 17 Nov 2025 00:19:49 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/?p=1295525 Here's where to buy the cult-favourite sweet

The post Beloved British treat Percy Pigs to arrive in Australia appeared first on Homes To Love.

If you’ve ever met a Brit who’s lived in Australia, you’ve probably heard them mourn the lack of Marks & Spencer’s iconic Percy Pigs. What seems to be the most popular souvenir request for anyone making the trip over the pond, the iconic raspberry and strawberry gummy lollies in the shape of little pigs are a beloved delicacy for anyone who has spent any time in the UK. So much so, that travellers are filling their luggage to the brim with the sugary sweet.

But, the impassioned pleas and suitcase-stuffing of Percy Pigs for anyone visiting the UK can be a distant memory, now that Coles has announced it will be stocking the M&S brand locally in stores from November 19th.

“2025 has been a year of adventure… We’re coming, Australia – 19/11/2025.” a teaser post shared to the official Percy Pigs Instagram page read. Marks & Spencer confirmed it too: “The rumours are true… We’re bringing the magic of M&S Food Down Under.”

The arrival of Marks and Spencer lollies to Coles in Australia has caused nothing short of a shopper frenzy, with one commenting “It’s a Christmas miracle!!” and another saying “I’m going to be spending so much money at Coles.”

It’s being reported that two M&S branded lollies will be arriving in Australia: the iconic Percy Pig gummies and Colin the Caterpillar sours.

Percy Pigs are chewy fruit gummies in the shape of little pink pig faces made from real fruit juice: raspberry, grape, elderberry, blackcurrant, and mandarin.

Colin the Caterpillar sours are vegan gummies with a sour sugar coating, available in pineapple-orange, peach-mango, and raspberry-lemon.

The range also includes fan favourites, like Percy Pig Phizzy Pigtails, Percy Pig Piglets, Percy Pig Reversy Percy, Colin the Caterpillar Fruit Gums, Colin the Caterpillar Party Time, Colin the Caterpillar Cola Gums and Colin the Caterpillar Cherry Gums.

And just in time for Christmas, we could also be seeing a few other recognisable M&S classics on our shelves including Scottish Shortbread, Luxury Gold Tea Bags and The Original Very Moreish Munch Tin.

Where to buy Percy Pigs in Australia

Fans of Percy Pigs will need only visit one grocery store moving forward: Coles Supermarkets will be the official Australian stockist of the M&S range from the 19th November, with Percy Pigs priced at $6 per bag.

The post 7 substacks to subscribe to for the interiors-obsessed appeared first on Homes To Love.

]]>
Substack is having its moment. In an online world stuffed to the brim with indistinguishable noise, readers seem to have remembered that they prefer meaningful sentences to meaningless scrolls, and voices with personality over content written for algorithms. In the same vein, an interest in design is gradually growing – perhaps this juggernaut too is a return to something that feels human-centric rather than trend-led.

As readers seek out Substacks to subscribe to, it has become clear that it is about wanting writing with a pulse – commentary that feels lived-in and willing to push past the obvious. In that spirit we have curated a list of the best interiors Substack newsletters worth subscribing to.

The best interiors Substacks

A Considered Space by Eleanor Cording Booth

A blue and white stripped couch, a green coffee table, a timber vintage cabinet and artwork
Image: A Considered Space

Eleanor writes like someone who has diagnosed herself as “home-fixated,” though – in a professional opinion – her therapist has already beaten her to it. Her newsletter is a study in the small domestic obsessions we are all slightly ashamed to admit, rendered with wit, taste and the sort of candour that makes you feel seen. Subscribing is not solely about the interiors but the the pleasure of reading someone who cares deeply, perhaps excessively, about the way we live.

House Call with Kate Arends

If you have ever stared at a blank wall and wondered where, exactly, the instructions for adulthood are kept, House Call answers in measured, workable notes. It is design therapy without the couch – thoughtful and reassuring. With an array of newsletters that speak to personal experiences, and the addition of a weekly Zoom session labelled Office Hours for paid subscribers, it is designed as a focused hour to get grounded and make progress on home or habit-related tasks. There is no pressure to share – it simply offers a space to show up, work alongside others and move forward on something you have been putting off.

Charlotte’s Web by Charlotte N. Parker

A mosaic background with a collage of lamps
Image: Charlotte’s Web

Charlotte’s Web feels like a notebook kept by someone who has spent years turning rooms into narratives. She has a talent for tracing how our taste evolves – sometimes gracefully, sometimes with a wince – and why certain spaces stay with us long after we have closed the tab. Packed to the brim with personal wishlists and thought pieces such as “Interior design rules I always come back to,” this interior Substack is easy to read and appealing to the eye.

Studio Bern Interiors

Think of this as a dispatch – directly from the source – an interior designer giving you the annotated margins of their practice. Beyond the polished images you get the rationale: the art of a thoughtfully styled tabletop, what you should focus your interior design budget on, etc. For readers who crave more than inspiration and want to understand the mechanics of a well-made room.

Wearstler World by Kelly Wearstler

The august Kelly Wearstler is revered in every design circle that matters, so it should come as no surprise that her out-of-budget and thoroughly insightful sensibilities have carved out a corner on Substack. Wearstler World is part moodboard, part masterclass, part escapism. Perfect for readers who treat interiors like couture – thrilling to observe, devastating to tally.

Remotely by Lucy Williams

A blue living room with brown sofa, paper lantern, pattern coffee table and striped chair

Lucy’s newsletter reads like a personal recount of her own experiences – travels, interiors, glimpses into her day-to-day – and how those moments might translate into someone else’s life. There is generosity in that; sharing is always a good idea. Her essays land softly, offering thought, texture and a kind of friendly relatability that makes you reconsider the small details of your own home – like every paint colour you have used in your home.

Mad About The House by Kate Watson‑Smyth

Kate Watson-Smyth is a seasoned interiors journalist, podcaster and author who founded the award-winning blog Mad About The House, which has long been considered essential reading for anyone serious about design. Her Substack is the natural extension of that world – thoughtful, informed and shaped by decades spent interviewing designers, writing about homes and decoding the logic of a well-considered room.
