4 unexpected ways to display art when you want to get creative https://www.homestolove.com.au/decorating/home-decor/how-to-display-art-in-unexpected-ways/ Wed, 05 Nov 2025 07:42:35 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/?p=1293896 An expert guide

The post 4 unexpected ways to display art when you want to get creative appeared first on Homes To Love.

There’s no denying that the right piece of art has the power to instantly transform a space, bringing beauty, warmth, and personality into every corner of the home – even the ones we often overlook. In fact, some of the most delightful moments come from placing artwork where you’d least expect it.

Of course, there’s nothing wrong with the go-to gallery wall or statement hang, but if it’s something unique you’re looking for – there’s a lot to be gained by thinking out of the box. By embracing unexpected ways to display art, we can bring joy and charm to the everyday.

Ahead of this year’s Affordable Art Fair, director Georgia Huestis shares her expert tips for showing off your collection.

How to display art in unexpected ways

Art has a way of enriching our daily lives. Whether it’s a still life in the kitchen, a streetscape in the laundry, or a propped painting above the piano, these small, intentional touches invite beauty, creativity, and personality into the everyday.

Have a play around with colour and groupings of artworks that harmonise with one another. Your eye will naturally be drawn to artworks of a similar palette preference or theme. By trusting your personal style a cohesive collection of artwork will follow.

Finally, don’t be afraid to experiment, rotate, and rethink – often the most inspiring homes are those that are lived in and constantly evolving.

Perfectly propped

A still life artwork casually propped on top of an old walnut piano.

Give yourself a break from the tool kit and embrace a more relaxed approach by simply leaning an artwork on a piece of furniture such as a piano or sideboard.

A casually propped painting, like this richly painted still life by Lael McDonald perched above the piano, evokes a sense of a home that’s truly lived in; where the piano is played and there is time for creativity.

Keep it fresh in the laundry

A landscape painting sits on the laundry bench against a tiled backsplash.
Morrisset Street at Midday artwork by James Lyle from Sarah Birtles Art + Advice is placed against the laundry room backsplash, bringing a touch of colour to the neutral space. (Photography: Dave Kulesza. Interior Design: Julie Bloom of JMB Studio)

Why not add a touch of beauty and charm to the most practical room in the house? A thoughtfully chosen artwork can transform the laundry from a purely functional space into one that inspires and uplifts.

For instance, this textured oil painting by James Lyle, offers a gentle escape, transporting you from the household chores at hand, to a meander down an imagined streetscape.

Whether it be a small piece casually propped on the laundry bench or a larger work installed, introducing art into the laundry is a reminder that beauty belongs everywhere. A simple yet effective way to make everyday chores feel much more cheerful.

Change it up in the kitchen

Still life artwork by Nell Symonds depicting a pair of red pears against a black background hangs in a kitchen above a bowl of green pears.
Savona artwork by Nell Symonds from The Toowoomba Gallery acts as low hanging fruit for anyone wanting to add character and intrigue to an otherwise utilitarian space. (Photography: Dave Kulesza. Interior Design: Julie Bloom of JMB Studio)

The kitchen is the heart of the home, and I have a small hook in my kitchen where I regularly rotate artworks depending on my mood or the season.

Don’t be afraid to move pieces around, smaller scale works are particularly easy to swap. These little changes can brighten your day and subtly transform the energy of a space.

As pictured, a classic still life such as Nell Symonds’ painting of pears above a bowl of fresh fruit, adds depth and charm. It’s a clever way to keep your fruit bowl ‘ever fresh’ and bring a sense of artistry to your culinary space.

Stack with style

Two stacked artworks, Tropic Light (top) and Banana Tree (bottom) by Emma Rushton from Gallery Alchemy take pride of place in the living room of interior designer Julie Bloom. (Photography: Dave Kulesza. Interior Design: Julie Bloom of JMB Studio)

Don’t overlook the opportunity to make a statement by hanging more than one artwork together. Hanging artworks in unexpected places such as above a doorway or stacked vertically not just at eye line can transform forgotten walls into striking focal points.

For example, this double hang of paintings by self-taught artist Emma Ashton, installed one above the other. This arrangement draws the eye right in and adds a dynamic energy to what may have otherwise been an overlooked space behind a side table.

Like the artworks shown here? All these, and more, can be found at the Affordable Art Fair in Sydney – held from November 6-9. For tickets and more information, visit the Affordable Art Fair website.

As a shopping editor, I spend hours and hours scrolling social media, scouring the internet and investigating everything relating to furniture, appliances and home décor. Among my find comes a coveted list of emerging trends big and small. Some trends are best left in the past, but others grip me so tightly they occupy every corner of my mind.

This month, it’s the rising interest in Rococo interiors, a trend Pinterest predicted following a 95% rise in searches for “Rococo wedding,” a 140% rise in “Rococo party,” and a 5,465% increase in the term “Rococo outfit,” referring to the feminine, coquette aesthetic driven by Gen Z.

The thing with interior shopping is that it can be expensive, especially if you’re someone prone to giving into trends. My biggest advice is to watch, read and understand each trend and where it comes from. If it resonates with you – and fits into your current home – then maybe it’s something worth adding to cart for. The best things in life should bring you joy, and it’s the same with how you decorate your home.

Below, we take a look at what’s trending in home décor, and what pieces from each trend are worth the splurge.

Hostingcore has been rising in popularity over the last year, where content creators and home dwellers alike are curating creative tablescapes that look as delicious as they are Instagrammable – although this trend is more than its looks. Younger people are finding ways to gather community amidst a loneliness epidemic, as well as the economic strain due to the cost of living. In a report by the University of Sydney looking at loneliness in young Australians, they found that 43% of people aged 15 to 25 feel lonely. Smell, touch, taste and visual aesthetics are used strategically to immerse the senses, fostering a space for genuine connection and intimacy.

2. Rococo interiors

A Rococo revival is officially here. These aesthetics of the late Baroque period, aesthetically aligned with Marie Antoinette, have been slowly trickling back into the collective consciousness. Frills, ruffles, candlesticks, and gilt mirrors are all reflective of the rising aesthetic. According to Pinterest 2025 Trend Predictions, Rococo aesthetics are rising, especially in the wedding, fashion and interior spaces. Whether it’s a pushback to modern minimalism or a nostalgic reaction to the cost-of-living crisis, don’t be surprised if pastel colors, floral motifs and vintage hardware make an appearance in your home.

3. Chrome and metallics

Cool tones such as chrome, silver and metallics have offered a sophisticated addition to modern homes, creating interest in the use of sculptural silhouettes and juxtaposition against warm leathers and woods. In tandem, the revival of 1960s mid-century modern references and the playful, sculptural forms of the 1980s signal yet another cyclical return, with chrome finishes at its core. This increase in these metallic additions feels like a push back against the maximalist interiors that have flooded our social media feeds, incorporating interest instead through texture, contrast and shape.

This mood-boosting trend is rooted in the concept of joy. The trend, which emerged during the COVID pandemic as a reaction to global uncertainty, has now returned in a more toned-down iteration. Vivid colours, eclectic patterns, and whimsical decor pose as a way to escape the blues and offer a mood-boosting aesthetic to your space. Whether it’s swapping a muted couch for a pop of yellow or simply letting a cordless lamp make its own statement, it seems dopamine décor is here to stay.

5. Home wellness spaces

(Image: @yourreformer)

Home wellness spaces have become increasingly popular on social media, reflected in the rise of home equipment such as walking pads, which are turning homes into multifunctional spaces. This trend was also seen on The Block, with Britt and Taz’s wellness-themed rumpus room – a self-contained Pilates studio complete with two reformers. With the rising cost of living, people are transforming their homes into multifunctional gyms equipped with walking pads, Pilates gear, and weights to promote rejuvenation and self-care. Home gyms also eliminate commutes, reduce dependence on memberships, and cater to individual routines. In a dopamine-driven society, these spaces are designed for calm and rest.

Why we are all dreaming about Châteaucore https://www.homestolove.com.au/decorating/trends/dreamy-interiors-trend-chateaucore/ Thu, 30 Oct 2025 05:31:42 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/?p=1293160 how to perfect the look

The post Why we are all dreaming about Châteaucore appeared first on Homes To Love.

]]>
As we near the festive season, the names Nancy Meyers and Ralph Lauren are thrown around frivolously. The lived-in feel of their designs – without the clutter of children or miscellaneous goods lying around – brings to mind a paradisical idea of home. However, there is a term for this aesthetic that goes beyond the limited final months of the year, and it turns out it’s currently all the rage – it goes by the name of Châteaucore. A style that pertains to the country-esque look that is elegant and polished but never pretentious, laden in texture and abundant with hydrangeas.

(Image: @buchanan.studio)

The interiors trend is connotated with an escapist impulse: after years of minimalism and sleek modern interiors, people are drawn to something romantic and human. Châteaucore borrows heavily from French provincial style, shabby chic and the grandeur of historic châteaux – go figure. The trend is characterised by antiquities, floral fabrics, toiles, stripes in subtle form, gilt details, chandeliers, natural finishes like linen and terracotta, and soft neutrals. Overall, the style balances the rustic with the refined.

Soul is what people seek from their environments – and not solely at home. A range of hoteliers have adopted the aesthetic, moving away from the sterile environments that once predominantly took over hotel settings – white linen sheets, charcoal carpet, bathrooms lacquered in white marble with grey veining. The shift toward interiors that feel storied and comfortable is palpable.

(Image: Hôtel du Couvent)

How to achieve Châteaucore

Begin with one anchor piece – a piece of furniture or antique with a story to tell, from an heirloom-style wardrobe, vintage mirror or carved sideboard. Like a good outfit, you should start with a statement piece and work around that, otherwise you will brusquely become overwhelmed – especially when you’re trying to achieve such a layered look. Importantly, you need to mix eras. A few vintage pieces complemented by modern furnishings – you need to find the balance – it is important to avoid filling room after room with only antiques.

(Image: @horwoodphoto)

When setting your foundation, a muted palette of soft tones – avoid sterile whites or slick black, as the stark tones will disrupt the romantic feel. A neutral base will be a good place to start before you begin adding your patterns and texture, but always keep in theme with the palette.

(Image: @horwoodphoto)

Layer texture and pattern – this is paramount to getting the look. Forget the rules you were told as a child: navy and black do go, and so can patterns if you do it well. You also want to embrace materials with patina and character – worn chairs, chipped paint, faded rugs – rather than chasing new-luxury.

Take a look at Rachel Donath’s limited-edition collaboration with Coco Republic https://www.homestolove.com.au/decorating/furniture/rachel-donath-coco-republic-limited-edition-collaboration/ Mon, 27 Oct 2025 03:00:05 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/?p=1289194 A meeting of two distinct voices in Australian design.

The post Take a look at Rachel Donath’s limited-edition collaboration with Coco Republic appeared first on Homes To Love.

]]>
In a meeting of two revered voices in Australian design, Coco Republic has partnered with designer Rachel Donath for a limited-edition collection that unites two distinct approaches to contemporary design. When I saw the email come through, I honestly thought it was spam – it felt too good to be true,” shares Rachel Donath. “It quickly evolved into a meeting, and from there, everything fell into place quite organically […] I’ve always admired Coco Republic as a brand – they are a stalwart of the Australian design landscape. It marked a moment where my work and aesthetic were being recognised by a brand I deeply respect.”

Image: Lauren Trompp

The collaboration centres on the idea of considered discovery – furniture that feels collected and layered over time, balancing sculptural silhouettes with everyday function. “We worked collaboratively to shape the size and composition of the collection. For me, it wasn’t about quantity, it was about cohesion. Every piece needed to feel essential, like it belonged, and contributed to the overall story,” says Rachel.

Developed collaboratively from concept through to completion, the result is a series of pieces that combine liveability with refinement, referencing mid-century modern, brutalist and constructivist influences. “Even though it’s a collaboration, Coco Republic gave me the creative freedom to stay true to my style. You’ll see familiar signatures: sculptural silhouettes, interesting textures, and a certain youthful energy that keeps the designs from feeling static or overly polished,” adds Rachel.

Image: Lauren Trompp

Moody tobacco-hued timbers sit alongside bright natural oak and oil-rubbed brass, offset by tactile surfaces in leather and Mongolian sheepskin. Among the highlights are the Omaha Book Console, a versatile storage piece for books or records, and the Coronet Chaise, an architectural design with a distinctive silhouette. “I have a soft spot for the Freya Ottoman. It’s a continuation of an idea that’s close to my heart and inspired by my Allard Ottoman, which has become a signature piece in my own range,” Rachel continues. “I wanted to create something that felt just as tactile and sculptural but with a different sense of warmth and presence.”

Drawing inspiration from the raw elegance of mountainous and fjord landscapes, the range reflects a dialogue between Donath’s playful aesthetic and Coco Republic’s more structured design language. “With Coco Republic, I wanted to ensure the designs reflected both of our identities – something that felt at home in their world but still unmistakably mine,” adds Rachel. “Merging our sensibilities required a delicate balance, but I think what we created is a true meeting point between our styles; harmonious, unique, and full of personality.”

Image: Lauren Trompp

Each item is produced in limited quantities, underscoring the collection’s focus on craftsmanship and exclusivity. The Coco Republic x Rachel Donath collection launches online and in Coco Republic showrooms on 2 October.

Creating a beautiful dining room that feels both elegant and inviting takes more than just a table and chairs. From statement pendant lighting to carefully layered table settings, the right combination of pieces can transform any space into a stylish haven for entertaining. In this guide, H&G’s stylist Sophie Wilson shares the essential dining room items and design tips every home should have this season – perfect for creating a room that’s both functional and full of charm

From chic tabletop treasures made for lingering dinner parties to a timeless room set-up inspired by a designer showroom display, H&G’s stylist, Sophie Wilson, serves up a feast of fresh decorating ideas this spring.

Ahead, a must-have list of all the items and design details no dining room should go without.

How to bring your dining room design vision to life

Winnings showroom De La Espada table
This De La Espada table in the Winnings showroom caught my eye, with its ash timber base and gloss forest green tiled top. I used this as a foundation to build this month’s ‘The Room’ scheme from.

Even for me, stepping into a showroom can feel overwhelming – and I’m in and out of stores most days.

To separate inspiration from all the visual ‘noise’, when I spot a hero piece I love, I take a quick snap on my phone, then build a moodboard of complementary pieces, drawing on the main style, finish or colour to create a cohesive, shoppable scheme.

From oversized vases to statement rugs: The secrets to curating a stylish home https://www.homestolove.com.au/decorating/home-decor/curating-a-stylish-home/ Sun, 28 Sep 2025 22:52:38 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/?p=1285813 Plus, five must-have pieces for pulling the look together

The post From oversized vases to statement rugs: The secrets to curating a stylish home appeared first on Homes To Love.

]]>
When it comes to creating a home that feels effortlessly stylish, it’s all about selecting pieces that strike the perfect balance between form and function.

From an oversized vase that doubles as sculptural art to a designer rug that instantly anchors your entire room, the right statement pieces can transform your space into something deeply personal.

Here, we share the secrets to a stylish home, as well as a few key pieces to execute the look.

Hali x Smac Studio Rugs

The key to a stylish home lies in its curation, and nothing says curated luxury quite like a statement rug. A rug brings warmth and texture, tying the space together for a more cohesive flow.

A rug can also bring a more playful twist, so by opting for a vibrant colourway or pattern, you can instantly transform the overall vibe of your home. For a rug that delicately merges classic style with modern aesthetics, the Hali x Smac Studio collection will deliver in spades (or stripes). This collection features four distinct designs, Vicenza, Monaco, Seville and Marseille, with each available in three colourways.

Image: Supplied

To introduce an element of depth into the space, opt for a rug such as the Seville in Moss. This rich shade of green will draw a room together and pair with any dark oak or timber elements, while the thick stripes keep it from feeling too heavy.

For something lighter in tone and design, the Marseille in Sky/Champagne will delight with its playful curves and oversized dots that have been intentionally designed to reflect the topography of the French Riviera.

Città Stripe Cotton Towel Bundle

Image: Città

When it comes to styling your home, every detail of your home should feel hand-selected, even down to your towels. This set from Città strikes the perfect balance between playful and practical, and the chocolate brown radiates warmth and effortless style.

Saarde Hand and Body Wash

Image: Saarde

Elevating an everyday essential, such as hand wash, is an easy way to infuse personal style into your space. This hand and body wash from Saarde is the perfect example. At its core, this is a gentle olive oil hand soap; however, it has been transformed by the amber glass bottle with its organically curved silhouette.

Black Blaze Trunk Vase

Image: Black Blaze

There is something so whimsical about an oversized vase, and its ability to command a space using its presence alone. The Trunk Vase from Black Blaze will inject a room with bold confidence and a sense of fun. It works equally well as a standalone statement or as a vessel for fresh blooms.

From bold textures to timeless accents, these five pieces prove that curating a beautiful home is all about elevating the everyday and styling with intention.

What is the trend in pendant lighting in 2025?

In 2025, lighting made of natural materials such as wood of rattan have surged in popularity due to their affiliation with eco-friendly and sustainable materials. These designs offer a warm ambiance and can add a gentle texture to your space.

On the other end of the spectrum lies spherical designs made of glass and metal to bring an element futurism through sculpture, serving both as functional and artistic. These pieces act as a point of interest without taking too much space.

Another emerging trend in 2025 is colour, including Pantone’s 2025 Colour of the Year: Mocha Mousse. This warm and welcoming shade of soft brown is easily digestible, made to last, and its simple palette looks great on interiors including lighting. Lighting can be incredibly prominent in a design, and so embedding a colourful hue can add brightness and fun to your home.

What is the best wattage for pendant lights?

Picking the right wattage for your pendant light can truly transform a space. For those who want a bright space, a 100-watt maximum bulb (or LED equivalent, around 1380–1600 lumens) is well suitable in places such as on top of a kitchen benchtop, dining area or study space. For something with a little more ambiance, a 60-watt maximum bulb (or LED equivalent, around 800 lumens), can help create a warm and cosy atmosphere.

Pair a pendant light with a dimmer switch to easily alter the brightness and ambiance of your home. Alternatively, there is a growing increase in smart devices such as pendant lighting. Brands like Philips Hue offer fixtures such as the Enrave and Ensis smart pendant lights, providing up to 50,000 shades of warm-to-cool white light options to choose from.

If you’re looking for new tapware, you’re in luck: there is a lot more to choose from these days. Compared with major kitchen or bathroom purchases, like ovens or baths, tapware may seem like a minor component. But it has a big impact on aesthetics and practicality and can set the entire tone of a space.

Some prefer to keep things pared back with unobtrusive stainless steel, while others might opt to up the glam factor with gleaming gold or brass. How do you choose? Much depends on the style of your bathroom. Certain taps have a distinctively traditional feel, while others feel particularly modern. The finish can make a huge difference: matte finishes can work well in a contemporary space, brass feels more classic, while chrome or nickel can fit beautifully into practically any scheme.

There used to be no middle ground between Downton Abbey and 2001: A Space Odyssey. Many tap fixtures were too old-fashioned, while others were too futuristically modern. For those looking for something in between, however, there is good news, with disruptors like ABI Interiors offering premium mixers in simplified, classic shapes at accessible prices, while big names such as Winning Appliances and Reece continue to go from strength to strength.

When you’re ready to make your decision, you’ll find all the information you need in our pick of the tap suppliers, from high-end to budget and everything in between.

Best tap brands in Australia 2025

ABI Interiors

Since opening its first store in Queensland’s Burleigh Heads in June 2016, selling only tiles and rose gold and matte-black bathroom fixtures, ABI has had astonishing success. In 2018, it launched a brushed brass finish, becoming one of the first Australian suppliers to provide cost-effective PVD colouring for taps. There are now eight signature finishes to choose from and ABI has opened showrooms in London and New Zealand.

In 2022, ABI Interiors was awarded the prestigious Australian Export Award for e-commerce and last year it opened the doors to a state-of-the-art showroom on the Gold Coast, showcasing its impressive range of tapware. Its taps make an organic, sculptural design statement and are well priced and well engineered, using innovative technology and high-quality materials. Most fall under the price ceiling of $500.

The premium high-arch Elysian ‘Minimal’ mixer and spout has been a huge success. We also recommend the sleek textural Namika with reeded detailing and Kingsley provincial-look ranges. The Milani ‘Assembly’ tap and spout set is also highly regarded as is the multi-award-winning Aliro collection.

ABI’s designs feature durable ceramic cartridge technology, seamless temperature and pressure control, and a minimum 3-star WELS water efficiency rating. Is your home a spring, summer, autumn or winter? Let scent set the tone https://www.homestolove.com.au/shopping/best-luxury-home-scents-candles-sprays/ Thu, 24 Jul 2025 03:28:39 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/?p=1281357 Home scents, room sprays and candles to match your home’s mood.

The post Is your home a spring, summer, autumn or winter? Let scent set the tone appeared first on Homes To Love.

]]>
In the world of interiors, fragrance plays a poignant role in setting the tone of a room. Much like a curated colour palette or bespoke furniture, the right scent helps you respond to a place – making you feel calm, warm or invigorated, as per the note’s intentions.

But what differs a home scent from a personal one? “I think there’s an opportunity with luxury home scent to be more literal than with personal fragrances,” says Ethan Archer, National Training Manager of Agence de Parfum. “Personal fragrances tend to be more abstract, blending dozens or hundreds of components to create a feeling rather than necessarily an illusion of a place, but home scents can be a photo-realistic copy of a time and place, and it works. You may not want to smell like a herb garden or a bakery yourself, but those scents could fit perfectly into your home.”

One way of curating your space is to think of your home as a particular season – a sensory cue that aligns with the tone of your space. Does your home have a spring hue, draped with lush linens and bright light? Or perhaps your home portrays a moodier signature – think lush, velvet tones and deep jewels.

What should you look for in a high-quality candle, home scent or diffuser?

While a high-quality home scent may feel like it’s just one note, considering everything from ingredients to emotional response can affect the way a scent presents a room.

“You should look for something that instantly hits you with a feeling – calmness, invigoration, perhaps clarity,” says Archer. “Before you think about fragrance notes, consider the emotion it evokes in you, since that’s how most people interact with scent. Beyond that, you want something that smells strong, harmonious, and unique.”

Properties including natural essential oils and soy or beeswax bases are often preferred for their clean burn and eco-friendly ingredients. The craftsmanship of the product, such as the type of wick used in candles, also plays a role in the performance of the scent. “Like with most areas of design, home scents from more artisanal brands like Trudon, Fornasetti, and Carrière Frères tend to be more interesting than those sold in very high volumes,” notes Archer.

Belle’s top home scents, room sprays, and candles for 2025

  1. Best winter scents
  2. Best spring scents
  3. Best summer scents
  4. Best autumn scents

Whether it be a soft candle, diffuser or room spray, a luxury home scent is all about the details. Below, we’ve curated a list of the best home scents, according to your season.

Winter scents for the moody and cosy home

Winter is all about layering, and scent is no different. Choose a home aroma that evoke warmth and cosiness, like smoky woods, rich spices, or creamy vanilla, can make a room feel inviting. “My favourite cold-weather scent is probably chimney smoke, or maybe cognac,” says Archer. “Laboratorio Olfattivo’s Distillato17 walks a line somewhere between the two. Though it’s not exactly groundbreaking to scent your home with florals in spring, if you lean into Australian native florals like wattle (mimosa) it can work well – Trudon’s Reggio does a beautiful job of combining this note with mandarin and grapefruit.”

“Santa Maria Novella makes a scented terracotta pomegranate called Melograno. A lot of people associate the scent with summer since they see it in Italy while on summer holidays, but I think it smells even better in winter thanks to its ambery and spicy notes.”

Tone: Warm, cosy, comforting, and intimate.

Suggested notes: Cedarwood, sandalwood, cinnamon, clove, amber, vanilla, smoky birch, pine, and spicy nutmeg.

Best for: Living rooms, dens, bedrooms and snug spaces.

Welcome guests into a cheerful, inviting environment with a summer scent.

Autumn scents for the warm and textural home

Autumn invites you to embrace the shift from summer’s lightness to the earthy comfort of cooler days. Since autumn often inspires both nostalgia for summer and anticipation for winter, choosing scents that balance crisp citrus top notes with grounding bases like oakwood or leather can truly enhance your home’s ambiance. “I suggest something like Creed Toscana or Trudon Ernesto, two very different scents that both work really well as the weather cools,” adds Archer.

How do I make my house smell nice all the time?

Keeping your home smelling beautifully inviting all day long is both a ritual and an art. While a cleaning ritual is the key ingredient, we also recommend to keep fresh air flowing through open windows and to use gentle, natural cleaning products that cleanse without the overwhelming chemical smell.

With this foundation, you can begin to layer in your favourite scents: whether that be candles, diffusers, or delicate room sprays, that can the season and the atmosphere you want to create.

It’s also nice to rotate your fragrances regularly. Our noses are surprisingly quick to acclimatise, so a changing scent keeps your home feeling fresh and alive. Consider high-traffic locations, such as entryways and living areas. For a quietly luxurious touch, tuck scented sachets into wardrobes, mist upholstery with fabric sprays, and bring subtle essential oil diffusers into bathrooms.

How can you tell if a sofa is high quality?

A high-quality sofa can be characterised by a few key features. First and foremost is a sturdy frame. Look for solid hardwoods with reinforced joints. Another way to tell if your couch is high quality is through durable upholstery. High-quality materials such as cotton, linen, wool, or leather are fabrics that will wear longer.

What is the 3-5-7 rule in decorating?

The 3-5-7 rule in decorating can be used as a guide for styling objects and grouping in odd numbers to create visual intrigue. This rule can be utilised across all areas of your home; however, it is most commonly used when styling shelves, artwork, or coffee tables.

What is the 70/30 rule in interior design?

The 70/30 rule in interior design is where 70 per cent of your space is dominated by one main style or colour, while the other 30 per cent is reserved for a range of contrasting elements such as bold accents, organic textures, or an alternate style. This keeps a space cohesive yet reflective of your personal style.

A sunrise alarm clock is your answer to relaxing, stress-free mornings https://www.homestolove.com.au/shopping/sunrise-alarm-clock/ Wed, 11 Jun 2025 07:35:14 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/?p=1256588 The morning routine hack you wish you knew about sooner.

Sunrise alarm clocks are revolutionising the way we wake up, offering a more natural and gentle approach to mornings. Unlike traditional alarms that jolt you awake with loud noises, sunrise alarm clocks simulate the gradual rising of the sun. This gradual increase in light intensity helps to gently rouse you from sleep, aligning with your body’s natural circadian rhythm. By mimicking the natural dawn, these clocks help reduce grogginess and make waking up a more pleasant experience.

Designed with modern sleepers in mind, sunrise alarm clocks often include additional features such as soothing sounds, customisable light settings, and even sunset simulations to aid in falling asleep. Whether you struggle with dark winter mornings or just want to improve your overall sleep quality, a sunrise alarm clock can be a valuable addition to your routine. This innovative approach to waking up not only enhances your morning mood but also contributes to better sleep health, making it a smart choice for anyone looking to start their day on a positive note.

Is it better to wake up to light or sound?

Waking up to light is often better than waking up to sound, as it aligns more naturally with your body’s rhythms. Gradual light, like that from a sunrise alarm clock, gently signals your brain that it’s time to wake up, reducing grogginess and making mornings more pleasant. Sound-based alarms, especially loud ones, can be jarring and disrupt your sleep cycle, leading to tiredness. Light-based alarms promote a smoother transition from sleep to wakefulness, improving mood and alertness. For those who need a stronger wake-up, combining light with a gentle sound can be an effective solution.

Buying a sofa is a big investment and a well-made one should last, not be something you throw out in five years’ time. Regardless of how well a sofa is made, you will not be happy with it if you don’t also love the way it looks, so it’s hugely important to know where to buy sofas you’ll love and treasure.

Finding a great sofa is like finding a soulmate: the beginning of a beautiful friendship. Whether a modular sofa or sofa bed, and whether a sofa is destined for a public room or a private space, its function – size requirements, lifestyle and comfort level – and design will set the room’s tone.

After a lifetime of research, interviewing industry experts including one of the world’s greatest sofa designers, Antonio Citterio, and parking ourselves on every sofa we’ve seen, here is a rundown of where A-list stylists, designers and influencers source their sofas.

For budding designers or just those looking to brighten their home, discover the complete shopping guide of where to buy sofas in Australia and online below.

15 surprisingly valuable things you might have lying around the house https://www.homestolove.com.au/decorating/home-decor/valuable-collectables-4898/ Wed, 16 Apr 2025 00:15:16 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/valuable-collectables-4898 You’re bound to have at least one of these collectables without knowing it.

The post 15 surprisingly valuable things you might have lying around the house appeared first on Homes To Love.

    ]]>
Unless you’re into collectables, you might not know that a rare $1 coin with a distinctive ‘double rim’ (the result of a printing error at the Mint back in 2000), is worth anywhere from $1000 to nearly $3000, according to the Australian Coin Collecting Blog.

After sifting through our coin jars and searching underneath our car seats, this news really got us thinking about what other valuable items we might have lying around the house.

On that note, we think it’s time to clear out the cupboards and check between the couch cushions for these surprisingly valuable items you might not even know you own.

    1. Old magazines

If you’re one of those people who find it hard to through away magazines, it may have been worth those years of lugging them around.

Magazines that have been around for decades, or those that no longer exist, are considered valuable collectors’ items.

    2. Vintage furniture

As fashion trends come and go, so do interior trends. Furniture that was popular back in your parents’ time is now highly sought after with the resurgence of retro, mid-century and vintage interior decorating.

If you’re not into the style yourself, you could make a pretty penny from that 1960s teak Parker sideboard you’ve got stored away.

A living area with a timber dining table

Parker dining tables in good condition regularly sell online for thousands.

    3. Old cameras

Are you hanging on to an old camera that you can’t even buy film for anymore?

If you know it’s going to sit on the shelf and continue to collect dust, consider getting it valued. There’s sure to be an avid photographer out there hunting for rare vintage models.

    4. Rare coins or notes

That old penny you’ve been hanging onto your whole life might actually be worth a small fortune.

Although rare, coins like the Australian 1930 penny and, as we mentioned before, the 2000 ‘mule’ are worth more than their weight in gold to serious coin collectors. Find a local coin dealer or jump online if you think you’ve got some valuable loose change.

    5. Books

While you probably don’t have the original copy of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (worth $2 million!) tucked away in your bookshelf, you may have some old classics, children’s books, or even university textbooks that are worth a bit of cash.

Sites like Amazon and Abe Books allow you to sell books online.

First-edition books are worth a lot of money – if you can find them. (Photography: Martina Gemmola)

    6. Stamps

Who didn’t collect stamps when they were a kid? Believe it or not, stamp collectors still exist! There are hundreds of rare stamps on eBay that range from tens to thousands of dollars.

Dig out your old stamp collection and see if you have any winners!

    7. Old china

With any kind of old pottery, dinnerware, or china, the embossed sign underneath could be a sign that an item is a collectible. Do a quick search on eBay to see if it might be worth something.

Keep a lookout for fine bone china tea cups by design houses such as Shelley, Wedgewood, Limoges and Royal Doulton, as these are always sought-after items.

    9. Glassware

Depression-era glass, carnival glass, even old soda bottles and vintage canning jars can be worth more than you think.

Have a look on eBay or get an antique expert’s advice to find out what that coloured glass your grandma left you is really worth.

Vintage scales and a green glass juicer

Depression-era glass, such as the green lemon juicer pictured, are highly collectable. Some vintage bakeware is also worth a small fortune. (Photography: Rob Shaw)

    8. Jewellery

If you’ve got some old jewellery lying around that you no longer wear or want to get rid of due to the wrong kind of sentimental value, it’s worth looking into trading it in for cash.

Although it’s unlikely you will get back what you paid or what it’s worth, it’s a quick and easy way to make some money from unwanted goods. Look online for reputable dealers.

    10. Records

Loved for their sense of nostalgia and intimacy, record players are making a comeback as a hip home accessory.

While old record players may not be of much value, some records are! If you’ve got some old Beatles records lying around, you could be sitting on a small fortune.

Maybe we should be hanging on to those old CDs?

Vinyl records have a huge fan base who are willing to pay top dollar for their favourite albums. (Photography: David Wheeler)

    11. Vintage bakeware

You might be surprised to know that your mum’s old CorningWare baking dish languishing in the back of the cupboard could be worth a small fortune.

The most common floral pattern is the instantly recognisable Cornflower range, which is still available to purchase today.

There are, however, several rarer designs which could be worth a hefty sum. Look for rare designs that were originally introduced in the 1970s, such as the ‘Wildflower’ and ‘Floral Bouquet’ patterns. Dishes with these designs can fetch up to $10,000 at auction.

    12. Old VCRs

Sure, the humble VCR was outmoded almost a decade ago, but film buffs are still out there, searching for rare copies of their favourite blockbusters.

VHS tapes of the original Star Wars Trilogy and classic Disney films are the most valuable of the bunch.

    13. Cassette tapes

Call your dad and tell him to put his tape collection in the will. These old things – which no one thought would make a comeback – are again having their time in the limelight. Experts say a high-end cassette-buying trend is emerging.

Because cassette tapes declined significantly with the introduction of the CD, they are incredibly rare, a fact which has driven their value up in recent years. In 2016, a copy of The Artist album by Prince sold for $4117 on Discogs.

    14. Childhood Toys

Open up your toy cabinet and you could be sitting on a small fortune. Even if you’re a child of the 90s, you can find some treasures. Unopened miniature Polly Pocket sets have been known to fetch up to $600 at auction.

Likewise, original Tamagotchis and rare Pokemon cards could be worth thousands. A Charizard Holo card from 1999 is worth upwards of $5000.

Valuable toys from the 80s include View Masters and Cabbage Patch Kids. Even things like the free toys you’d get in a Happy Meal could be worth a couple of hundred of dollars.

    15. Original Tupperware

For decades, Tupperware has had a dedicated fan base and now that the company is no longer operating in Australia, aficionados of the brand can be found scouring auction sites for rare and unused vintage designs. A pair of mid-century ‘Millionaire Collections’ salt and pepper shakers could be worth up to $50-70.

Many original Tupperware designs, including the Wonderlier Bowls (which debuted in 1946) and the Servalier Astro Bowls (from 1972), have also retained their value, selling for around $30 a pop.

It may not seem like much, but considering many people purchased Tupperware in bulk, these small values will quickly add up to a small fortune.

A rug is a statement piece which brings not only depth and beauty to a space, but intrigue and curiosity. In collaboration with interior design studio, Levine Vokaberg, Designer Rugs has launched a capsule collection – a timeless celebration of life’s rituals and the natural world. “This collection is inspired by interpreting the essence of those daily quiet rituals that inherently create connection; connection with others, and connection with the warmth of our Australian landscape,” says Levine Vokaberg Director and Interior Designer, Ruth Levine.

Created with techniques such as looping, cut pile, and stippling to create rugs with rich tactility that engage both sight and touch. These rugs are made from the finest ethically sourced materials, including 100% New Zealand wool and bamboo silk accents. They are meticulously handmade by skilled artisans, ensuring lasting quality and stunning depth.

Each of the four pieces tells a story, inviting reflection and connection while adding warmth and sophistication to your space. Step into a world of bespoke luxury and let these works of art speak for themselves and transform your home.

    Natural colour schemes

Inspired by the tranquil rock pools of Mollymook Beach, Grounded captures the beauty of water meeting rock in a way that feels both calming and captivating. The lush green tones reflect the Australian landscape’s serene yet powerful nature, while the subtle colour variations invite you to see something new each time—whether it’s the soft roll of mountains or the stillness of ocean plateaus. This piece will naturally pull people in, offering a connection to nature and a fresh story to share with those who visit your home.

    Artistic home décor

Awakening is a rug that tells a story of transformation, born from something as simple as a coffee filter. Crafted from spent coffee filter paper and inspired by Japanese ink artistry, this striking blue piece turns the ordinary into something extraordinary, almost like a vast, macro landscape. The layered design invites you to appreciate the beauty in everyday rituals and reminds us to slow down and truly see the artistry in them. It’s the kind of rug that will draw you in, encouraging thoughtful conversation and a deeper appreciation for the simple moments that make life meaningful.

    Earth-toned rug designs

Conversations is a rug that brings connection and a sense of belonging into your home. Inspired by the textures of tea-stained paper stitched together with black thread, this earthy-toned design radiates comfort and invites you to settle in. Its tactile surface isn’t just about looks—it adds a layer of richness to the stories that unfold in your home, becoming the backdrop to moments of connection and shared memories. This piece effortlessly creates a welcoming space where warming cups of tea, conversations between friends, and connection with loved ones can flow freely.

    Pairing colour with texture

Transforming the fleeting beauty of wilted, fallen leaves into something timeless is Embrace. With its delicate play of lines, texture, and soft drapery, this circular purple piece gracefully captures the passage of time. It’s perfect for bringing an organic softness to a modern space, adding a touch of nature’s quiet richness even in its most vulnerable moments. This rug feels like a beautiful reminder of nature’s elegance, turning everyday impermanence into a lasting, elegant statement in your home.

Little Black Book: Where to buy vanities and bathroom mirrors https://www.homestolove.com.au/decorating/home-decor/where-to-buy-vanities-and-bathroom-mirrors/ Tue, 04 Feb 2025 05:25:40 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/?p=1271546 Selecting new bathroom fittings is exciting but it can be daunting. This month’s Little Black Book is jam-packed with great ideas to help you choose the perfect vanity and bathroom mirror.

A good bathroom vanity is a multifunctional workhorse, providing a surface for washing, shaving and applying make-up with storage for stacks of toiletries and cakes of soap while concealing unsightly plumbing – all in a minimal amount of space. All you need to know is where to buy vanities and bathroom mirrors.

Bathrooms tend to be one of the smallest rooms in the house, and there are so many things that need to go in them. Selecting the right vanity is part of a larger puzzle, which includes devising an overall bathroom storage plan.

In bathrooms with a cupboard or large shaving cabinet, a slender vanity on tall legs or a wall-hung vanity can give a clean look with just enough space for toothbrushes. If you need to maximise storage, a full-height vanity that sits on the floor is a perfect choice.

Consider the style of the room. Vanity designs range from traditional furniture pieces to sleek, high-gloss units in finishes from wood to lacquer, glass, stone and metal. Will it be paired with wall- or deck-mounted tapware? Wall-mounted tapware allows you to have a much smaller sink, and subsequently a smaller top and vanity if space is limited. Do you want to mix components? Most vanity units are available as a base only, so they can be paired with different benchtops, sinks and tapware.

Pedestal sinks with generous ‘shelves’ are increasingly replacing vanities with basins in some of the chicest bathrooms. They’re a great way to spruce up an outdated space and work equally well with modern, rustic or classic styles. The column base allows more floor space to be visible, making a small room to appear bigger than it is.

With so many different vanity and mirror styles on offer, there’s something that will work beautifully in most bathrooms, from the smallest to the most spacious.

    Where to buy bathroom vanities
Kado ‘Neue’ mirror cabinet and ‘Era’ double curve vanity, both Reece. (Photography: Kristina Šoljo)
    • Remember the 75 per cent rule. A mirror should be at least three-quarters the width of the furniture it hangs above, so apply the same rule when selecting a mirror to install above your vanity.
    • Select an antique or vintage mirror to add character and elegance to a powder room. Look to The Old Pot Factory, Shades of Pale and The Vault Sydney for some of our favourites. If you’re after a vintage look without the price tag, Laura Kincade has some stunning options.
    • Consider a resilvering service. Moisture and time make their mark on mirrors, resulting in mottled and distorted reflections. Find an antique dealer or glaziers who can send old mirrors to a resilvering service. Using new silver nitrate, this type of process can make a beautiful antique mirror sparkle again. It’s not cheap, but you’ll have the benefit of keeping those lovely, hand-etched or bevelled edges on any prized frames.
    • Give a beautiful frame a new life or fix an old mirror with new glass. Don’t be put off by cracked glass. Gerry’s Glass has been fixing and repairing glass for more than 40 years. gerrysglass.com.au

The post 20 of the best plant stands that put your greenery on show appeared first on Homes To Love.

    ]]>
Attention green thumbs! The indoor plant trend has been growing out of control for a few years, and with the proliferation of beautiful plant stands out there, now is the time to get your hands, erm, dirty.

There are plenty of reasons to buy a stylish plant stand: to prop your precious plants up into more sunlight, to lift them up off a carpet or rug, or to keep them away from your pets (as some popular indoor plants are toxic to pets).

A plant stand is also a great way to highlight greenery and take advantage of vertical space in the home, or where you may be lacking shelf space to drape your plants. Plants can often look awkward when simply placed on the ground, but by giving them some height with a plant stand, particularly with the smaller species, you allow them to stand out and give them the attention they deserve.

Credit: Source: Leaf Supply by Lauren Camilleri (Simon & Schuster))

Fortunately, a plant stand can really be any object you can place a plant on. If you have a plant teetering off the edge of your windowsill, take a leap and put it on top of a stool instead, or a rattan shelf, or a bookshelf. If you’re a plant hoarder, clear out some floor and table surfaces by migrating your greenery to a plant stand instead. You can use utility carts, art supply carts or trolleys, shoe benches, or bookcases to organise your collection. The best plant stand may be the one you least expect.

Whether you’re looking for indoor plant stands or a sturdy plant stand that can withstand the outdoors, and no matter your style, we have rounded up a list of the best plant stands (as well as a few extras) that will really show off your greenery.

How do I choose the right plant stand for my home decor?

Choosing the right plant stand for your home is all about balance. You want your plants to compliment the space that you’re in, whether it be placed next to an armchair or side table. Your furniture and plants should be in collaboration with each other to create a sense of balance.

For small spaces, opt for a hanging plant stand or tiered stand to optimise space. The Costway two-tier railing plant stand is a great choice for small balconies, while the four-tier plant stand by Living Fusion has an angled, triangular shape with space for plants, books and other décor. For larger rooms, consider a multi-functional piece such as the Vigo nesting side tables, or something that is more of a statement item to create interest.

Considering your home aesthetic is also an important factor to choosing the right plant stand for your home décor. Modern and minimalist décor often consists of clean lines or natural, wooden materials. Wood furniture can often bring a sense of warmth, which is ideal for cosy spaces. Plant stands with tapered legs work well in a Scandinavian or mid-century homes, while boho interiors suit materials such as rattan or wicker.

Also, consider the practical features of your plant stand. Take into consideration whether your plant stand can hold a pot with sauces for drainage, or if you would need a plant stand with wheels to move plants for sunlight.

What are the best plant stands for small spaces?

Finding the best plant stand for small spaces is all about optimising storage. If you are someone with a big green thumb, choosing a tiered plant stand doesn’t take up as much floor space as multiple singular plant stands would. Plants will also look great alongside other décor such as books. You could also opt for a hanging plant stand for a corner. For vertical styling, the Copree two-tier hanging plant stand is thoughtfully designed to save space, making it suitable for small areas like living rooms, bedrooms, hallways, and corners.

Can plant stands improve the health of my plants?

Yes, plant stands can absolutely improve the health of your plants. Elevated plants can offer better light access, especially for those smaller plants that may get lost among the crowd of lush greenery. Plant stands may also give your plants opportunity for improved airflow which helps reduce the risk of mould and pests. Plant stands that come with grow lights can also significantly improve the health of your plants, especially in environments with limited natural light. The three-tier hanging plant stand with grow light has 6000k built-in grow lights that encourage plants to grow happy and healthy in your home.

The post 15 dated interior trends to leave behind in 2024, as voted by you appeared first on Homes To Love.

    ]]>
Trends come and go, but style is forever, said Gandhi or someone else. While this may be true, we’re of the belief that trends invite you to try new things and, in moderation, can help you to solidify your personal style. How else are you supposed to figure out that skinny jeans are uncomfortable and moustache-printed anything is a bad idea?

When it comes to interiors, however, trends can be much harder to dip in and out of; take popcorn ceilings, carpeted bathrooms or decorative word art, for example. These objectively ugly interior trends require time and money to remove; that’s why it’s always worth taking pause before jumping onto a trend. Our homes are our sanctuaries and not only do we want the things in our homes to reflect who we are, but we also want those things to stand the test of time and avoid landfill.

With that being said, making mindful updates to our spaces can help set us up for a great new year. So, in the spirit of letting go of the old and embracing the new, we asked our followers which trends they think should remain firmly in 2024 and they did not hold back!

While many of the responses had us nodding in agreement, others were met with raised eyebrows (mid-century furniture? Really, you guys?). Without further ado, here are 15 dated interior trends as voted by you, as well as some interior styling alternatives to try as we head into 2025.

15 dated interior trends to leave behind in 2024

    1. “Bouclé anything”

The people have been loud and clear on this one: bouclé is out for 2025. The bobbly yarn fabric that once featured in every trendy living space is, I’m afraid to say, done. Finito. While the bouclé trend is nowhere near as visually offensive as many of the other trendy fabrics past (*ahem* crushed velvet), we must admit that bouclé has been overused in recent years, leading to its unfortunate demise.

Instead try: More classic (and softer) fabrics like velvet, linen or cotton.

    2. “Grey”

Once the ‘it girl’ colour of interiors, grey has well and truly fallen out of favour and we can see why. While grey-on-grey-on-grey interiors (also known as ‘millennial grey’) were sleek and luxurious back in the 2010s, they now feel flat and devoid of life. If the return of maximalism and the rise of colour-drenching are anything to go by, bold and vibrant colours are what we want to see, and plenty of them!

Instead try: Colour drenching or earthy tones.

    3. “Mirrored furniture”

Another 2000s luxe-aesthetic staple many of you want to see gone is mirrored furniture. Often paired with a grey-on-grey colour palette and the aforementioned crushed velvet, mirrored furniture has lost its shine in recent years, with many of us favouring more timeless and easier-to-clean materials like timber. Plus, how many of us really want to see our own reflection (and grubby fingerprint marks) from every corner of the room?

    Instead try: Classic timber furniture.

A grey living room with a grey velvet sofa, chandelier and mirrored coffee table
Grey-on-grey, excessive velvet and mirrored furniture; the holy trinity of ‘luxe interiors’ of the 2010s. (Photo: Pinterest)

    4. “LIVE LAUGH LOVE”

One thing interiors should never, ever do is give you instructions, even if those instructions are to live, laugh and love (you know, I might be busy that day). Fortunately, the word wall art trend that became a standard feature of family homes everywhere has largely fallen out of fashion, BUT beware; this kitschy trend has moved from tacky wall stickers to those framed posters that say ‘ciao bella’, ‘coffee-lovers club’ and ‘bon appetit’. Sorry, we’re not taking this back!

Instead try: Framed photos and artwork without sentimental phrases or random words in foreign languages.

    5. “Beige”

Another colour you expressed clear disdain for is beige, and as someone who grew up in a beige house, I could not agree more. While a neutral colour palette has an undeniable ability to make a space feel calm, the whole 50 shades of beige look has an almost sedative effect. Give me colour, give me vibrancy, give me anything but beige, lest I snooze to escape such boring interiors!

Instead try: An earthy colour palette.

    6. “Modern farmhouse”

Now this is a divisive one. Characterised by rustic styling, exposed ceiling beams and vintage pieces, the modern farmhouse aesthetic has become quite popular here in Australia, however, to the point of many homes starting to “all look the same”. As much as we love modern farmhouse, perhaps it’s time to ease up on the “white walls and furniture with black trim and brass and wood accents” or reconsider the aesthetic when it comes to new builds.

Instead try: Less watered-down country home copy-and-paste and more drawing inspiration from your surroundings.

    7. “Stark white kitchens” and “everything white”

Another colour (or perhaps non-colour) we want to see less of in 2025 is white, or more specifically, “stark white kitchens” and “everything white” interiors. This is yet another 2000s trend that has well and truly reached the end of its life span (although we’re certain it’ll be revived in the future), making way for a varied, cohesive colour palette.

Instead try: Let’s hear it again for some earthy tones!

    8. “A rice cakes and hummus colour palette”

You guys really have a thing about bland colour palettes, huh? As well as being funny, this “rice cakes and hummus colour palette” response did make us think: has white, beige and brown been overdone too? The answer to that one is probably. It seems a bold and bright palette or the failsafe neutral tones and sage green combo are the way to go next year.

Instead try: A bold palette. Or a dash of green.

    9. “Mid-century furniture”

We can’t lie, this one hurt. What’s wrong with sleek lines and impeccable craftsmanship? Nevertheless, many of you were in agreeance with this controversial answer. Maybe the resurgence of mid-century modernism has led to too many cheaply made MCM furniture replicas or strange furniture pairings. Or maybe you guys are wrong.

Instead try: Investing in quality pieces you love (and not just those from the 50s).

    10. “Hamptons”

Along with modern farmhouse, the undeniably popular Hamptons style is apparently out too. The light and bright colour palette (read: all white with a dash of blue) is no longer doing it for you guys, and we’re not surprised considering just how vocal you were about all-white, grey and beige interiors.

Instead try: Once again, colour is the move.

    11. “Can we move on from subway tiles yet?”

Good question, can we move on from subway tiles yet? Although subway tiles were an essential feature in every hipster’s home 10 years ago, they’re not so popular anymore. To the point where we had to ask: how often do you really see subway tiles these days? Nevertheless, the once oh-so-New-York wall finish is no longer a favourite.

Instead try: Funky handmade tiles, kit kat tiles or checkerboard tiles.

A bathroom with subway tiles and timber vanity

    12. “Upper kitchen cabinets”

Cabinets below the bench, great, but cabinets above the bench? Apparently not fine. According to you guys, upper kitchen cabinets can look “messy” and “overbearing”, so if you have the space for large drawers and plenty of below-counter storage, that’s the way to go in 2025. For those of us renting, we’ll have to make do.

Instead try: Plenty of below-counter storage.

    13. “Painted feature walls”

No more painted feature walls! Painting just one wall of a room a bright and bold shade is no longer the way to introduce colour into a space. If you haven’t picked it up by now, colour drenching is well and truly here to stay, meaning: don’t just paint one wall, paint the whole room. Heck, even paint the ceiling! Make like a dodgy landlord and leave no surface unpainted.

Instead try: Surprise, surprise: colour drenching!

    14. “Black tapware” and “black fittings”

Don’t tell The Block‘s Brad and Kylie this one. Black tapware and fittings are no longer giving inner-city chic, and to be honest, we’re not surprised.

Instead try: Brushed brass, bronze or classic chrome.

    15. “Following trends”

Well, well, well, this may just contradict everything we’ve been saying, but it seems that following trends is one of the biggest trends you do not want to see in 2025 (is this a trend-ception?). Not to get all sentimental here, but we have to concede that creating a home that you love is what really matters; not following oversaturated and fleeting trends. Because, just like Gandhi or someone else said, trends come and go, but style? Now that lasts forever.

Instead try: Staying true to your personal style and sticking to your guns.

This is the new way to burn your candles, and it doesn’t involve a flame https://www.homestolove.com.au/shopping/candle-warmer-24610/ Wed, 31 Jul 2024 04:43:45 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/candle-warmer-24610 A stylish addition to the home that is worth melting for.

The post This is the new way to burn your candles, and it doesn’t involve a flame appeared first on Homes To Love.

    ]]>

If you’re a self-proclaimed candle enthusiast, then you’re probably already well acquainted with the humble candle warmer. Also known as candle lamps, candle lanterns, candle warming lamps…we could go on. But one thing is for certain – we are intrigued by the sudden surge in popularity these small illuminated candle warmers have obtained over the past couple of months.

Whether you’ve been using candle warmers for years or you’ve suddenly seen them pop up all over social media and you’re wondering what the fuss is all about, you’re at the right place. Here, we crack down on, well, what exactly candle warmers are, as well as the best places to get your hands on your very own.

    Do candle warmers really work?

Candle warmers or candle lamps melt a candle – generally top down – without the need for burning the wick. Using a light/heat source at the top, simply place your scented candle jar below it and watch as the wax slowly melts while releasing sweet scents into your home. Plus, as there’s no flame involved, it means it’s safer to have around the house (especially if your household includes young children or pets), and your favourite jar actually lasts a lot longer in comparison.

Photographer: Tim O’Connor | Stylist: Jessica Lillico

Is a candle warmer better than a candle burner?

Candle warmers or lamps give the same result as burning a candle – it still provides ambient lighting while filling your home with your favourite scent. However, there’s no residue (say goodbye to soot on walls or the sides of your candle jar), no naked flame, and as the heat from a candle warmer is generally lower than a flame, it means that your candle lasts a lot longer as it absorbs heat at a slower rate.

There’s a lot to love about candle warmers. However, it is important to note that a candle warmer won’t be able to give that cosy ‘flicker’ effect. So, if that’s a deal-breaker for you, opting to burn your candle the traditional way may still be the way to go.

What are the disadvantages of candle warmers?

While candle warmers have many pros, including lowering the risk of fire, improving air quality, and increasing the longevity of a candle’s scent, they can limit the size of the candles you purchase and are missing the aesthetic and visual warmth of a flame, which many people love. However, there’s no harm in having one and swapping out between using it and a match where you see fit!

Where can I buy the best candle warmers in Australia?

If you’re like us, and you have a cupboard filled with scented candles waiting to be enjoyed – at a slow and steady (and safe) pace – then you’ll want to get yourself familiar with some of the best candle warmers that are available on the market right now.

The secret to making a house your Dream Home https://www.homestolove.com.au/interiors/making-a-house-your-dream-home/ Mon, 15 Jul 2024 00:55:40 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/?p=259827 Whether you're a homeowner or a renter, transforming your space into the home of your dreams might be easier than you think. We share the ways small changes can create big impact.

The post The secret to making a house your Dream Home appeared first on Homes To Love.

    ]]>
If the current climate, and experiences of the past few years, has taught us anything, it’s that our homes are being tested more than ever before. A tougher market, spatial requirements for multigenerational living and small space solutions, are top of mind for anyone considering how they’re living now, and what that might look like in the future.

From DIY updates to tech upgrades and everything in between, these tips will take your house from tired to inspired, bringing you one step closer to the home of your dreams.

In an ode to the great outdoors, serene swathes of green are luxuriously layered across the wainscoting, decorative accents and even in the LG CordZero Auto Emptying Handstick + Power Mop Vac, all coming together to create an interior scheme that’s both colourful and comforting. Photo: Supplied LG.

    Don’t be afraid of colour

It’s your dream home, not someone else’s. So how did we all get so consumed in resale value or the need to keep design ‘safe’, that we lost our colour confidence? Paint is one of the easiest, most affordable, (and most reversable) ways to inject some personality back into your space, and with most landlords happy for tenants to make cosmetic updates (with permission, of course) this works for renters and owners, alike.

But, embracing all-in drenching or adding a splash of this year’s hottest hue aren’t the only avenues to packing on the personality. Don’t overlook appliances when it comes to boosting the bold — we love the deep forest green finish of the LG CordZero Auto Emptying Handstick + Power Mop Vac for an added dose of dopamine with your daily routine.

In celebration of the Dream Home partnership, LG is giving away the opportunity for two Australians to win a room makeover. Running until 31 July 2024, the two best entries will each win an LG Dream Home room makeover valued at RRP $15,000, including a selection of eligible LG products up to the value of RRP $10,000, a $3,000 Freedom gift card and a digital interior design consultation with Kate Lawrence Interiors. Entries are open now at LG Dream Home Competition.

Create your own at-home revitalisation zone

Focusing on more economical ways to enjoy our downtime equates to spending more time than ever consuming content and prioritising wellness from home. And whether it’s movie night with the whole family or taking advantage of the early hours with an on-screen yoga class, elevating your home comfort level is easier than ever. Even the most compact living space can be transformed into a multi-use marvel with clever consideration.

Prioritise a proportional sofa that offers room for a work out zone; use multipurpose furniture to streamline storage; forgo bulky armchairs for transitional pieces like ottomans or floor cushions that can be stored away when not in use, and layer with cosy accents for the ultimate finishing touch, just don’t forget the tech!

Upgrading your TV to a sleeker, smarter version, can be a serious gamechanger when carving out a space made for unwinding. The latest G4 OLED TV range from LG ticks all the boxes when it comes to recreating that cinema level experience at home. Its super slim profile, unique pixel technology and 4K picture quality are incredible. Team with an LG Sound Bar to amplify the audio experience and create a truly immersive experience. Bonus: The OLED TV also comes with the best in smart home additions, like voice activation and controls. So you’ll never need to leave your beanbag…

Swapping out tired tapware for modern fixtures can make a huge difference to the look and feel of an outdated bathroom, laundry or kitchen, and with a host of affordable options on the market, there’s a style to suit every aesthetic and budget. Looking for a more DIY-friendly approach? Replacing your dated cabinetry hardware with contemporary handles, pulls or knobs, is as simple as screwing in the upgraded selections, and is guaranteed to satisfy that renovation itch without having to start from scratch.

    Consider customisation

While the words ‘bespoke’ or ‘custom’ might lead to assumptions about pricing, a considered approach to customisation can be a cost-effective and clever solution to maximising space and increasing the liveability of your current home. Using joinery to repurpose space in tricky, compact or unused areas of your home can improve functionality, flow and keep your home working hard for you and your family well into the future with minimal fuss.

    ]]>
There’s nothing quite like a refresh of your home interiors for reminding you want you love about it (or wanted to change). And thankfully, revitalising your home doesn’t need to be a daunting task or a drain on your wallet. There are plenty of easy design updates that can transform your spaces on any budget.

Whether you’re thinking about making some small tweaks or keen to dive into a full-scale renovation, we’ve got you covered.

Inspired by the latest trends and featuring standout products from Freedom, these ideas will help you create a stylish and beautiful home sanctuary, no matter your budget.

Easy and affordable design updates for your home

    1. Fresh cushions and throws

One of the simplest ways to update your space is by changing your cushion covers and throws. Choose patterns or textures that complement your space and your existing pieces. We love soft, earthy tones and feel-good colour combinations.

    2. Lighting update

Lighting can completely change the ambience of a space.

Lighting plays a crucial role in setting the mood of a room. Consider swapping out your old lampshades for new ones that make a statement. Pendant lights and stylish floor lamps can also add a contemporary feel. Even switching a bright lightbulb for a warmer tone can be the simple change you need to elevate the ambiance of a room.

    3. Wall art and mirrors

Affordable prints or DIY artwork can reflect your personal style and keep your space looking chic. Mirrors not only make rooms feel larger but also add a touch of sophistication. Look for unique frames that complement your décor.

    Mid-range furniture upgrades

    4. Accent chairs

An accent chair can serve as a stylish statement piece in your living room or bedroom. While an interesting shape can make the chair a standout feature, never overlook comfort for design.

The Monty Fabric Swivel Chair from Freedom offers both in abundance. Its simple design is oversized, and it features a plump back and seat cushions wrapped in a luxurious soft Native Linen. Available in five fabric and four leather options, it will suit any space.

    5. Dining table refresh

Upgrading your dining table can completely change the dynamic of your dining area. Consider materials like wood or glass to suit your style, or a round table to make mealtimes more social. Pairing your new table with different chair designs can also create a more eclectic look.

    6. Luxurious rugs

A well-chosen rug will tie a room together and add a layer of comfort and style. The Kylie Floor Rug from Freedom features a contemporary design that complements various décor styles, adding warmth and texture to your living room or bedroom.

Its neutral Ivory tone will work in a range of interior styles, and the durable structure of 100% wool pile and 100% cotton back can withstand everyday wear and tear.

Floor rugs with soft, inviting textures can elevate a space.

    Splurge-worthy full room renovations

    7. Kitchen makeover

Investing in a kitchen renovation can significantly boost your home’s value and functionality. Focus on modern cabinetry, updated appliances and stylish countertops for easy design upgrades. Don’t forget about splashback tiles – they can be a game-changer in your kitchen’s design.

    8. Bathroom update

Transform your bathroom into a spa-like retreat with a full renovation. Consider features like a freestanding bathtub, rain showerhead and modern vanities. High-quality tiles and fixtures can also be worth paying more for if you want a luxurious finish that makes the space feel special.

The Little Black Book is your definitive guide to sourcing beautiful things; your essential list of where A-list stylists, interior designers and influencers source their products and find inspiration – from modern products, to antique one-offs, priced from budget to rare. This is where you’ll find an eclectic mix of products, shops and suppliers to enable you to bring out your individual style and make your home stand out from the crowd. In the first of this monthly series, creative style experts, Melissa Penfold and Isabella Walker-Smith have shared a complete a guide to sourcing the interior designer’s staple and secret weapon: where to buy mirrors.

Mirrors are high-impact focal points that will lighten a room, reflect views, add sparkle and instantly double the objects you own. They’ll extend the feeling of space and transform the poky into the palatial. Plus, there’s trending mirror hotspots like placing them in gardens: many people love the idea of doubling their space outside as well as in, especially if there’s a pretty flowering creeper to reflect. And remember the ‘75 percent rule’: a mirror should be at least three-quarters the width of the furniture it hangs above.

For budding designers or just those looking to brighten their home, discover the complete shopping guide of where to buy mirrors in Australia and online.

And for more shopping guides, discover your home of shopping: Little Black Book.

Where to buy mirrors in Australia 2024

    The Bronte Tram

You know those whimsical mirrors cool people love to furnish their rooms with. Designers get the same sort of thing here. You’ll find old French pieces and a huge range of Dutch Baroque. It’s the Portobello Road of mirror shopping, with 500 square metres of pre-loved items, including vintage faux bamboo designs and carved Italian oak.

    @thebrontetram

    CLO Studios

The Noosa-based studio specialises in unpretentious sustainable timber mirrors. You can’t go past the quirky vintage French walnut and poplar mirrors, or 1970s French industrial designs. And don’t miss the ‘Tmar’ mirror, hand-carved from Tunisian palm wood; a favourite with influencers. These pieces sell fast.

    Coach House Collective

A good take on antique and vintage mirrors at this Bowral newcomer where you will find six stores in one place. We recommend Table & Sill and Chapter & Oak for French antique and gilt, one-of-a-kind mirrors.

    @coachhouse_collective

    Curated Spaces

A great place for good-quality vintage mirrors at a great price. Lean into the romance of 20th-century bamboo hexagons to 1930 French and Swedish designs as well as 1950 Italian loop, shield, and wavy mirrors in brass, bamboo, walnut or pink glass. You can pick up dream things at little cost, but be quick – stock goes fast.

    Curatedspaces.com.au

    Deco Mirrors

A bargain hunter’s paradise, this chain has a huge choice of metal designs, at fantastic prices. There are also designer-look, factory-direct prices of pretty much all sorts of modern mirrors here. Particularly good value are the plain black arch and brass metal frames.

    decomirrors.com.au

    Etsy

Style for less. Etsy is usually a good bet for practical, well-priced, good-looking mirrors in all styles (think boho, modern and vintage), in classic materials (metal, timber or rattan), over-sized to petite. There’s so much to choose from.

    Florabelle Living

Great versions of the latest trends. You’re welcome to look at the website, but you will need to order through your interior decorator. Look for new releases including the Hollywood Regency-style ‘Royale’ or curve-edged, amorphous mirrors, such as ‘Dune’ in oak, as well as unexpected forms of ovoid rounds. Also, new incarnations of the now iconic captain’s mirror hanging from a leather strap, as well as circular wonders you can put to work, finished in everything from antiqued glass to green rattan scallops and decorative metal twigs.

You can easily give a beautiful frame a new lease of life, or fix an old mirror with new glass. Gerry’s Glass has been fixing and repairing glass for more than 40 years. Repeat clients include Lendlease, Crown, SJB, Meriton, Mirvac, Merivale, even Ben Stoner Antiques. Try looking for an ugly piece of art in a interesting frame – take the art out, and Gerry’s can replace it with sparkling new glass.

This is a seriously good source and location to visit, especially when searching for Georgian and Regency pieces. It’s where top interior designers shop for spectacular 17th-century Spanish giltwood numbers, French embossed cushion-front repoussé looks, ornately carved Louis XV styles, and large impressive gilt salon mirrors.

It’s not cheap, but you have the benefit of keeping those lovely hand-etched or bevelled edges, which are expensive or impossible to replace. The Old Pot Factory

One of the best for serious mirrors and frames. Set within 8000 square metres of hardcore antiques in Australia’s Southern Highlands, the 50-year-old family business is the place to come for big ticket Versailles-style numbers, and rare 17th- to 19th-century French, Italian and English giltwood mirrors, (Baroque, Chippendale, Rococo, early Regency, Georgian, Queen Anne). Also, strong on architectural European garden mirrors – many designs are 18th- and 19th-century cast iron decorative grilles refitted with the new mirror, measuring 2.2 metres, ideal to open up a garden nook or create a dramatic ending to a path. Your purchases will have provenance, which helps resale values. Most pieces end up in Australian private collections of our most prominent families. The newest Cultiver collection proves that stripes will never go out of fashion https://www.homestolove.com.au/shopping/new-cultiver-collection/ Tue, 04 Jun 2024 07:06:16 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/?p=256679 And we couldn't agree more.

The post The newest Cultiver collection proves that stripes will never go out of fashion appeared first on Homes To Love.

    ]]>
Let’s get one thing straight – we love a good pattern. Whether that’s a country-style gingham, a bold houndstooth, or a classic herringbone, different patterns offer a different look, feel, and aesthetic to a room. However, one pattern that flies under the radar for most is the humble striped pattern – and its beauty lies in its simplicity.

Australia’s beloved linen brand, Cultiver, has released its new collection, Luna, and the subtle, unassuming striped motif seen throughout this collection has unexpectedly caught our attention.

    What is the Luna collection?

Luna by Cultiver is a love letter to neutral hues and stripes. From mini cushions to throws, Luna is expertly crafted on a Jacquard loom in Portugal to fit seamlessly into your interior style and decor. With a quality 560GSM construction and 100 per cent pure linen construction, Luna is crafted from only the best—high-quality, OEKO-TEX certified, heavyweight linen.

The Luna collection features a petite-size mini cushion, two lumbar cushions and two matching heavyweight throws. Come home in style

    Supplied

Imagine walking through the door and into a space that instantly greets you with warmth and style. The Arabella runner rug does just that by elevating your entryway while whisking away the day’s grime.

This rug’s minimalist design and subtle tones work with all interior styles. The wool and jute blend feels heavenly underfoot and stands up to daily comings and goings, with a Scandinavian charm that’s hard to overlook. Good looks aside, the Arabella runner is also an eco-conscious and pet-friendly option. To keep yours in peak condition, vacuum gently without a beater bar and immediately blot any spills.

    Cosy up your bedroom

For a bedroom that feels like a haven, it all comes down to incorporating elements that bring warmth and relaxation. Nothing does that better than a luxurious area rug like the Darren Palmer Zen rug.

You’ll feel your feet sinking into the plush texture of this wool-blend rug, plus the dense pile gives it a classy look that goes perfectly with bedroom decor. And with its white colour and subtle geometric patterns, it adds a touch of elegance to any space.

Vacuum regularly with a nozzle attachment to keep the fibres intact. When dealing with spills, just pat dry with a clean, absorbent cloth.

    Supplied

    Bring natural elegance indoors

For that effortless style we all covet, the Darren Palmer Earth rug is made from a blend of jute, cotton and wool and hand-loomed in India by local artisans. Its textured tones are ideal for a coastal home or holiday house, while the abstract pattern adds interest and texture.

To keep your rug in good condition, rotate every six months to ensure even wear and tear. Regular vacuuming on a low setting will prevent dirt and dust build-up without harming the wool fibres.

Mix it up with playful patterns and colours

Elevate the look of any room with a white rug peppered with an eye-catching pattern. The Amsterdam rug comes in a choice of sweet polka dots or a unique, nomadic-inspired print, making it a fun centrepiece for a boho or eclectic aesthetic.

Made from durable polypropylene, it’s built to last and is easy to maintain. A simple vacuum is all you need to keep it looking as vibrant as when you first laid it out – just skip the spinning brush to avoid any potential damage to the fibres.

The post Flick Facebook Marketplace with this new online vintage furniture destination appeared first on Homes To Love.

    ]]>
Facebook Marketplace is not for the faint-hearted. While anyone who has dared dip their toe into the world can vouch for the thrill that comes with hunting down a unique treasure, too often we’re left with unread messages, unfair prices or unmet expectations.

Well, a new Australian online marketplace for antique and vintage homewares promises to change all that. Bazaa founders Aria Wigneswaran, a former Depop executive, and Thibault Henry can sympathise with the common frustrations.

“We understand the challenges of hunting for vintage and antique homewares – the time, energy, and the risk of scams,” says Aria. “At Bazaa, we’re here to shake up the game. We’re celebrating the charm of slow-made, pre-loved furniture and home decor, while reshaping how Australians discover, buy, and sell these timeless pieces.”

Interior designer Marco Meneguzzi loves a treasure hunt and managed to give his two-bedroom apartment in Sydney a more classical feel by filling it with some of his favourite finds. (Photography: Alana Landsberry | Styling: Sophie Wilson) (Credit: Photography: Alana Landsberry)

Whether you’re buying or selling, Bazaa offers a seamless experience of browsing beautiful and bespoke pieces for your home. You can search individual seller’s stores, certain eras and styles, or even for categories as niche as room dividers and coat racks

New products are uploaded and — more importantly — approved by the team at Bazaa each week, so you won’t waste any time having to sort through the trash or try and work out whether it’s a bad photo, or just bad. The payment process is also handled on the website, so you can say ‘see ya’ to popular PayID scams.

“We’re shaping a world where pre-loved pieces continue to tell their rich stories of craftsmanship while uniting a community of people contributing to a circular future,” says Aria. And it’s true. Antique and vintage pieces have a unique way of telling a story and can make even the most modern of homes feel rich with history.

Whether that’s a weathered piece of French oak furniture, a worn wool kilim rug or a piece of silverware beautifully tarnished with time, they offer character and charm a new or mass-produced piece simply can’t replicate. And speaking of such lovely things, in the name of research, we scrolled through Bazaa and found six pieces we’d love to shop right now.

Shop our top picks from Bazaa

    01

Late 19th Century French bobbin corner chair

    $1120, Bazaa

Sourced from Lyon, France, and dating back to the 19th century, this sweet corner chair is a work of art. Displaying extraordinary craftsmanship with its ornately turned bobbin legs and woven seat, it’s sure to be a conversation starter.

    02

Pair of vintage wicker rattan bedside tables

    $380, Bazaa

Boasting both form and function, we absolutely wouldn’t mind if these beautifully textured rattan bedside tables were the last thing we saw before falling asleep each night.

    03

    Vintage Afghan Mori Gul Kilim

    $900, Bazaa

Rugs have a certain way of tying a space together and this pure wool Kilim rug, with its warm and neutral palette, would bring such character to a space. Originally woven in the 1950s, it has that worn age to it that could make a house feel like a home.

    04

Vintage pillowy boucle three-seater vintage sofa

    $5950, Bazaa

Sofas sure are an investment piece, but we can’t see you regretting this purchase. Thanks to a voluptuous silhouette and a recent reupholstery job using a rich, boucle fabric from Warwick, this sofa looks oh-so-lovely.

    05

    Vintage James Dean framed print

    $49, Bazaa

Art can be costly, which is what makes posters a clever way to decorate without doing serious damage to your bank account. But rather than picking a poster you’d currently be able to find at your local art gallery, why not put up a pin-up from yesteryear?

    06

    1960s cane furniture set

    $750, Bazaa

Cane has a sculptural quality and character that not many other materials can replicate. We’re not sure what it is about these 60s-era chairs, but we’re suddenly craving a prawn cocktail.
