When furnishing any bedroom, the first piece of furniture that comes to mind is the bed. Though this may seem obvious, you do have a few different arrangements to choose from when it comes to assembling your bed.

What is a bed base?

Not to be confused with a bed frame, a bed base is simply the base at the bottom of the bed that your mattress lies on top of. In contrast, a bed frame features a bed base with a bed head attached.

Whether or not you choose a bed frame or a bed base is a personal choice. However, if you love shopping for bed heads with unique designs separately, choosing a bed base (with no bed head attached) is a great option. Plus, bed bases are incredibly easy to put together, often consisting of only two to three components: the base, the legs, and the slats (if included).

Is a bed base better than slats?

Firstly, buying a bed base does not necessarily guarantee that it is free of slats – this boils down to the individual design of each bed base. However, it is common that bed bases are non-slatted. You may prefer a non-slatted bed base if you’re after a bed base that is sturdy. Further, some non-slatted bed bases may make your mattress feel a bit firmer but tend to lean on the pricier side. A slatted bed base, in contrast, is lightweight, cost-effective, and easy to manoeuvre – making it a great choice for those who tend to move a lot (or just love rearranging bedrooms).

Choosing either a slatted or a non-slatted bed base is ultimately up to your preferences, needs, and budget.

Can you buy just the base of a bed?

Yes, you certainly can. That is ultimately what a bed base is. If you don’t want a bedhead, then a bed base will work just fine to elevate your mattress off the ground as you sleep. A separate bed base is also a great option for those who love to swap out their bed heads occasionally.
