Pricing: Prices vary according to the model, finish and features you choose. “You can pay from $29 to $2900,” says Daniela Santilli, marketing leader at Reece. “If practicality is a priority, opt for an adjustable rail shower – it can be set to different heights, and it’s great for cleaning the shower enclosure.”

Shape: Shape-wise, soft, square and organic lines are trending, says Santilli. But looks aren’t the only consideration, says Grigor. “Shape dictates the spray geometrics and water coverage. If you prefer more spray across the back and shoulders, it’s worth considering a rectangular model, which has a wider spray pattern.” Bigger isn’t necessarily better: large showerheads spread the spray wider so it feels lighter and more rain-like on the body.

Quality: Quality varies, so be sure to ask a few questions prior to purchasing. “Find out what the shower’s internals are made from – ceramic and brass are far superior to plastic,” says Nicole Body, product manager at Rogerseller. “Also determine how the product is finished – powdercoat, PVD or electroplate. What is a realistic budget for a bathroom renovation?

The golden question: how much should you spend on a bathroom renovation? Well, how long is a piece of string? A number of factors come into play when working out a bathroom renovation cost, such as room size, cost of materials, hardware, permits and labour. It can also come down to design specifics: are you installing a bath? Floor-to-ceiling tiles? A custom-made vanity?

According to HiPages, this can mean a range from anywhere between $8000 and $35000, or more, with the average sitting at $26,000 in 2023, according to the Housing Industry Association of Australia. Plus, a 10-20 per cent buffer should be allowed for.

Sometimes, builders will quote per square metre for renovations. HiPages suggests that this can fall somewhere between $2300 and $4600 per square metre for a bathroom, but again, it really depends on the materials and specs you’ve opted for.

BUDGET: $2000 to $7000

Put down the tiling tool kit. As you have probably guessed, there is not a lot of room in this price bracket for remodelling and you’ll almost certainly have to keep all of your plumbing and electrics in place. But there are still plenty of affordable bathroom updates to try. “You can paint the tiles, change the vanity, update shower accessories and sometimes even paint the bath,” according to Oscar Merhebi from Eternity Kitchens and Bathrooms.

If you want to add some new accessories, go for a new toilet roll holder, mixer taps, a fresh vanity, or a new shower head. It’s also important to pay attention to clean lines and continuity, according to owner of Interiors By Cason, Noelene Cason. “Wall-mounted vanities with drawers create clean lines and provide good storage, while shaving cabinets are good for storage and easy to access,” says Noelene. “Look around for ex-demo showroom stock items for savings.” She also adds that extractor fans and heat lamps are also a must in every bathroom, as are LED downlights, which are reasonably priced these days.

Mid-range bathroom renovation

BUDGET: $8000 to $16,000.

Bigger jobs, such as ripping out old tiles and replacing them with chic new ones, are doable in this price bracket. “What it really comes down to is the accessories you choose, what brand you want to use and how lavish you want to be,” says Oscar. “The cost of accessories are scalable though.”

At this price point you can start to incorporate a little luxury. “Frameless and semi-frameless shower screens create a feeling of clean lines and space,” says Noelene. “Introduce a feature tile for a section of one wall or a whole wall depending on cost, either within the shower or behind the vanity.”

“Wall lights placed either side of the vanity mirror bring elegance to a room, while in-wall cisterns for toilet suites are a great way of creating more floor space,” she adds. “If the room allows for it, standalone or back-to-the-wall baths creates style and luxury.”

Luxury bathroom renovation

BUDGET $16,000 to $45,000+

The luxury bathroom budget is a thing of a beauty, with large demolition projects, total layout changes and complete overhauls unlocked by a bigger budget.

“You can add more features like heated floors, a spa bath, additional lighting and any other trimmings you think will make your bathroom luxe,” says Oscar. “You can start to look at big brands, such as Dorf, and some higher-end features, such as free-standing baths, which can cost around $12,000 alone.”

This is also the time to opt for luxury materials, such as porcelain or stone tiles, or glass mosaics as feature walls, or adding in extras like heated towel rails or underfloor heating. You could also go for custom-designed vanities, with either marble or stone tops and wash basins.

“Built-in LED strip lighting also creates mood lighting and illuminates floors for night lighting,” says Noelene. “Depending on the size of the bathroom and its windows, dressing the window with either sheer curtains, blinds or shutters will bring a feeling of indulgence to the space.”

How much does each trade cost for a bathroom reno?

• PLUMBING: Expect to pay a call out fee of between $60 and $100, and hourly rates between $100 and $150.
• TILING: Tiling can range from between $35 and $120 per square metre – not including the cost of the tiles themselves.
• BATH INSTALLATION: Plumbers charge $350 upwards to replace and fit a bath.
• SHOWER SCREEN INSTALLATION: A basic shower screen will set you back around $400 for installation, but frameless can cost up to $600.
• WATERPROOFING: This can cost anywhere between $500 and $750 for an average-sized bathroom.
• ELECTRICAL: Are you replacing lighting, adding underfloor heating or heated towel rails? An electrician will usually charge a call out fee of between $60 to $150, and work off an hourly rate of between $80 and $200, depending on distance and complexity.

Known for their bold style and proclivity for hard yakka (plus a nice $20,000 package from Beaumont Tiles), they decided to do it anyway. Three months’ worth of weekends and any spare time were spent at the property they’ve owned for five years, located three-and-a-half hours from Melbourne’s CBD.

Tom did a lot of the work himself – along with the help of Sharon and Ankur and Leah and Ash’s tilers from The Block, Imperial Tiling – and Sarah-Jane styled the space in the signature luxe-country look that saw the couple win room after room on The Block 2022. 

The house on the site was formerly rented out, but the couple decided to transform the two-storey shed into a stylish studio space for friends and family to stay in. The large bedroom is now wrapped in wainscoting, while a feature wall in a soft striped Grafico wallpaper makes the tonal bedding pop. 

A wood-burning fireplace in the corner will ensure guests stay warm in the cooler climate and reminds us of the cosy and character-filled master bedroom they delivered on The Block. “How much does it hug you as soon as you walk in?” we can hear judge Shaynna Blaze saying.  

Dividing the large space into two, they were also able to add the biggest bathroom you’ve ever seen to the space. A toilet and shower are neatly tucked behind an opulent double vanity in the middle of the room, while a round bathtub sits by the window, so you can soak up the gorgeous views of the surrounding mountain ranges while you, well…soak. 

The wainscoting continues in this space, which oozes Sarah-Jane’s modern country charm: sparkly chandelier and bold patterned floor tiles and all. Sheers delicately drape over the wall of windows, while the elevated position provides plenty of privacy.

1. Going for old

A bygone bathroom gets a clever current-day cleanse.

THE BRIEF: Designer Shantala Mack was tasked with updating a heritage-listed home in Sydney without losing its charm. “The clients previously lived in a modern apartment and, although they now had this gorgeous older home, they wanted the bathrooms to feel more modern than they did,” she explains.

THE MATERIALS: The goal was to modernise while retaining original character, and the vivid Colony ‘Marly’ wallpaper from Boyac fit the bill. A mirror was custom-made by Funktion Framing to look vintage while storage was concealed behind wallpaper panels. The glossy choice of the Statuario marble from Gitani Stone serves as a much-needed contrast to some of the other classic elements, including the wooden windows.

THE BRIEF: “I wanted to do something you don’t see everywhere,” says Jacqui Hurwitz, director of Patina Design Studio, who took on the interiors for this new build in Sydney. However, it wasn’t easy to convince her client, who thought her design might look too busy. “They went with it and now say every time they see it that they’re so happy.”

THE MATERIALS: Far from pedestrian, the subway tiles from Josh Ray Ceramics are more like soldiers stomping along the walls. Against the fluid grey vein of the Laminam wall and vanity from Anterior XL, it’s a masterclass in contrast. The cool palette is balanced with wooden cabinetry. “Timber veneer was added to warm it up a bit,” Jacqui explains, “otherwise it would be way too stark with just the white, black and grey.”

THE BRIEF: Designer Amelda Wilde was tasked to transform a home from the 1980s into a dreamy yet durable holiday escape. “That set the stage for me to play with nostalgia,” she says. “I imagined a place with a record player on from breakfast to well past bedtime.”

THE MATERIALS: Every choice was intentionally cheerful but hard-wearing. “When I found the tiles, I just knew they would be perfect,” says Amelda of the rich-toned rectangles and magenta mosaics. Eye-catching Marble Hub sinks are teamed with Brodware taps and curved, goldtrimmed Pierre mirrors from Perth-based Granite Lane.

THE BRIEF: “The main bathroom was designed for the owners’ daughter and had a strict brief of no colour!” says interior designer Shantala Mack of this recent project. It needed to embrace function and femininity – all while cruising in neutral.

THE MATERIALS The overuse of white can stumble into too-stark territory, but Shantala avoided that by specifying a rendered tadelakt surface. Seen on the walls, shelves and even mirror (custom-made by Touchstone Constructions), it accentuates curves and softens the space. The grey-veined Statuario marble from MTI Stone injects elegance, and Brodware ‘Manhattan’ tapware in Roma Bronze brings warmth.
