If your FYP looks anything like ours (read: mine), then it’s full of Maxton Hall edits, theories and slow pan shots of the bucolic landscapes and sprawling country estates that play host to show’s hit new season, titled The World Between Us.

And while, granted, I’m yet to meet an enemies-to-lovers trope I haven’t taken to, I’m certainly not a cultural outlier for falling into this current obsession. In fact, the German-language show has become so popular, that it now claims the title of most-watched International Original Prime Video series, topping the charts in over 120 countries including the US, UK and Australia. Which is no mean feat given its stratospheric rise comes mere months after the zeitgeist-dominating finale of The Summer I Turned Pretty (with its equally as idyllic sets).

When do new episodes of Maxton Hall come out?

The show’s first season was gifted to us in one bingeable batch, but we’re not so lucky when it comes to Maxton Hall: The World Between Us – which follows a staggered release schedule.

The first three episodes (of the six planned) premiered in Australia on Friday November 7, 2025, with the additional episodes dropping weekly every Friday at 5pm AEDT. Of course, you can catch up on all six episodes of Maxton Hall season 1 on Prime Video in the meantime.

 • Episode 1, ‘Devastated: Aired November 7, 5pm AEDT
 • Episode 2, ‘Wish to the Universe: Aired November 7, 5pm AEDT
 • Episode 3, ‘Emotional Rollercoaster: Aired November 7, 5pm AEDT
 • Episode 4 ‘Secrets: Aired November 14, 5pm AEDT
 • Episode 5 ‘Deceptive Lightness‘: Aired November 21, 5pm AEDT
 • Episode 6 ‘TBA’: November 28, 5pm AEDT

What happens in Maxton Hall Season 2?

Based on a trilogy of novels by German author, Mona Kasten, the series charts the enthralling love story of scholarship student Ruby Bell and heir to the Beaufort fashion dynasty, James Beaufort as their opposite worlds collide at the elite private school. Forced to tolerate each other’s existence, the unlikely pair strike up a working relationship that soon turns to something more, when James and Ruby are forced to reckon with the realities of their wildly divergent life paths that have somehow become intertwined.

The official synopsis for the sophomore season of show reads“Those who fly high can also fall low…After their passionate night together in Oxford and her greatest life goal within reach, everything seems to be going perfectly for Ruby. But a stroke of fate in James’ family changes everything and James himself, of all people, brings her back from cloud nine to a harsh reality.”

Where was Maxton Hall filmed?

Naturally, the appetite for detail around Maxton Hall and its beloved cast members, including protagonists James Beaufort (Damian Hardung) and Ruby Bell (Harriet Herbig-Matten), has reached an all-time high. And for the like minded among us who might also find themselves hooked on the latest addition to our must-watch shows for interior design lovers, the biggest question remains: where, exactly, is Maxton Hall located in real life?

As with other fan-favourite series that lean heavily on iconic filming locations – think the sun-drenched shores of The White Lotus, the grand estates of The House of Guinness, or the Gothic landscapes set to bring Emerald Fennell’s upcoming Wuthering Heights to life – the world of Maxton Hall is stitched together from real sites across Germany and the UK.

Filming took place mainly across Celle, Hanover, Hamburg and Oxford, mixing Gothic courthouse exteriors with university corridors, elite schools and aristocratic estates. According to Prime Video, Season 2 – based on Mona Kasten’s bestselling sequel Save You – returns to many of the original locations and travels to new areas of Hanover and Hamburg as the world around Ruby and James expands.

Below, we map out every major filming location across Season 1 and Season 2 – including what’s real, what’s fictional and which spots you can actually visit.

Is Maxton Hall a real school?

Marienburg castle near Hanover in Germany was used as a filming location for Prime Video's Maxton Hall.
Marienburg Castle in Lower Saxony, Germany, serves as the main backdrop for Maxton Hall’s school setting. (Image: Wikicommons)

Maxton Hall may not be taking enrollments anytime soon, but its scene-stealing setting is anything but fictional. The UK-based college that we’re introduced to in the novels finds its real-life counterpart in Marienburg Castle, which has surged in popularity since the show began.

Located in Pattensen in the German region of Hanover, the historic estate was built between 1858 and 1867 by King George V as a birthday present for his wife, Queen Marie of Hanover. Today, it forms the backdrop to most of the exterior scenes shown throughout Maxton Hall, but is currently closed to the public until 2030.

“It was really challenging to shoot season 2 because so many fans were there every day trying to take photographs, but the plot was top secret, so it was really a challenge for the team.” Country Director at Prime Video Germany and Austria, Christoph Schneider, told Deadline after filming wrapped.

With a plot that’s centred around Ruby’s dream tertiary education destination – Oxford University – the storied college town features quite heavily throughout both seasons.

From St Hilda’s College in Cowley Place – where Ruby and James stay during their admission interviews – to Turf Tavern and Central Oxford’s High Street and Magdalen Bridge, the medieval alleyways and historic buildings of Oxford are a constant presence. Especially when you get to episode 2, 4 and 6 of season one.

Keen to make the Maxton Hall pilgrimage? You can check out any of the Oxford-based filming locations below:

 • Manos Cafe & Deli: 105 Walton Street, Jericho, Oxford – Ruby’s place of work.
 • Turf Tavern: 4 Bath Place, Oxford – where Ruby’s friends meet on their first trip to Oxford in Season 1 Episode 4.
 • St Hilda’s College: Cowley Place, Oxford
 • High Street & Magdalen Bridge: Central Oxford
 • Oxford University:Wellington Square, Oxford

Where is the Beaufort Villa in Maxton Hall season 2?

James and Lydia Beaufort in their family home in Maxton Hall.
In the show, twins James and Lydia Beaufort reside in a sprawling estate. (Image: Prime Video)

Museum Barberini in Potsdam, Germany, serves as the London HQ of the Beaufort family’s influential fashion empire in the show, but viewers could be forgiven for thinking the neoclassical facade was straight out of a Mayfair main road. Subsequent scenes are filmed in Potsdam City Palace

Where Potsdam becomes London on screen, so too is our sense of place altered when we step into the privileged halls of the Beaufort Villa that houses James, his twin sister Lydia and their parents. It’s within these scenes that fans are taken through some of the most memorable (and emotional) moments of series two. Don’t worry – we won’t spoil anything here!

Again, playing the role of an English country estate, the impressive home’s exterior is slightly further afield. In fact, a lot of family scenes are filmed outside and around Kyritz Ganz Castle in Brandenburg, Germany. The heritage building is located in the Prignitz district on a tiny island that’s completely surrounded by water and only accessible by boat.

Ruby Bell’s family home in Maxton Hall

In stark contrast to the Beaufort Villa, Ruby Bell’s family home is a welcome relief from the elitist world she occupies.

Located in Potsdam’s Neuer Garten (or New Garden) in Germany, the picturesque abode is situated southwest of Berlin between the Holy Lake (Heiliger See) and Jungfernsee. The area, commissioned in 1787 by Frederick William II and designed by gardener Johann August Eyserbeck, serves as a visual reminder of just how different the two protagonists really are – in the best ways.

Fans can visit Ruby’s home, and other familiar locations in Potsdam Germany at the addresses below:

Will there be a season 3 of Maxton Hall?

Everything to know about Maxton Hall season 3
(Image: Prime Video)

Fans of the breakthrough series (and literary trilogy), Maxton Hall, will be thrilled to know that, not only are we getting a season 3, but production is already underway.

Sharing the exciting news in a video posted back in June 9, stars Harriet and Damian confirmed that they were heading back to school – scripts in hand.

While we wait for season 2 to wrap, we can only speculate as to what the future holds for our favourite enemies-to-lovers. However, as with the previous two seasons, the final chapter will be based off Kasten’s final novel, Save Us, and as the synopsis reveals, we have a lot to look forward to.

“Ruby is in shock: Her worst nightmare has come true, and now Oxford and all her dreams that finally seemed within reach are at risk. Worst of all, everything points to James as the one responsible, even after everything they’ve been through together. Ruby thought that she had met the real James—the one who has his own dreams, the one who makes her laugh and makes her heart beat faster with a single glance.

“However, after an explosive fight between the two, they discover a terrible truth. Together, Ruby fights to graduate, as James tries to clear her name at school. But that means once again James must challenge his father and his expectations for him. And despite everything, James still threatens to break under the obligations to his family. Ruby and James must ask themselves if the worlds they live in are perhaps too different after all, or if they can finally find a way back to each other.”

How Klimt’s record-shattering portrait rewrites the list of most expensive paintings https://www.homestolove.com.au/lifestyle/culture-lifestyle/top-10-most-expensive-paintings/ Fri, 21 Nov 2025 04:59:47 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/?p=1296191 The prices behind these paintings are nothing short of astonishing

Gustav Klimt’s Portrait of Elisabeth Lederer has sold for an extraordinary $236.4m (approximately AUD $364 million) at Sotheby’s in New York, positioning it as the second most expensive artwork ever auctioned. The result surpasses all previous Klimt sales and establishes a new standard for modern works entering the uppermost tier of the art market.

Painted between 1914 and 1916, the portrait depicts Elisabeth Lederer in a Chinese imperial robe against a densely patterned backdrop, characteristic of Klimt’s late ornamental style. The work survived Nazi seizure, a fire that destroyed much of the Lederer family collection during the Second World War, and decades in private hands before its restitution in 1948. Its rarity and historical trajectory have long made it one of the most scrutinised Klimt portraits to remain outside a museum.

Klimt’s painting now joins an esteemed list of artists whose works have fetched their own record-breaking sums – below, a guide to the ten most expensive paintings ever sold at auction and the astronomical figures they command.

The 10 most expensive paintings ever sold at auction

Leonardo da Vinci, Salvator Mundi (c. 1500)

A painting of a man with long hair in a blue and gold robe dress hangs on a wall in a gold frame with people standing around looking

Few paintings have provoked as much debate as Salvator Mundi, a work whose authorship, restoration and disappearance from the historical record have made it a cultural phenomenon as much as an artwork. When it sold at Christie’s New York in 2017 for US $450.3 million (approximately AUD $694 million), it became the most expensive painting.

Amedeo Modigliani, Nu couché (1917–18)

Modigliani’s reclining nude series remains his most recognisable contribution to 20th-century art, combining Italian classicism with a distinctly modern feel. The elongated form, the direct gaze and the frankness of the pose have made this painting one of the defining icons of his short career, and sold for AUD $260 million.

Pablo Picasso, Les Femmes d’Alger (Version O) (1955)

Picasso’s dialogue with Delacroix culminates in this final iteration of the Femmes d’Alger series and achieved AUD $250 million. It bridges Cubism with a late, more expressive approach that he developed later in his career. It represents a point where he was deeply engaged in reworking and reimagining classic European artworks.

Andy Warhol, Shot Sage Blue Marilyn (1964)

This portrait of Marilyn Monroe is among the most instantly recognisable images in post-war art. Warhol’s controlled palette, paired with the brutality of the screenprint process, distils the actress into pure cultural iconography. With its lauded status, it comes as no surprise it sold for $289 million.

Gustav Klimt, Lady with a Fan (1917–18)

Klimt’s final portrait, painted shortly before his death, reflects his late fascination with East Asian textiles and patterning. The sitter’s pose feels suspended between intimacy and theatre, a hallmark of his last works. The protait reached $166 million.

Mark Rothko, No. 6 (Violet, Green and Red) (1951)

A painting that demonstrates the full maturity of Rothko’s chromatic fields, where colour seems to hover rather than sit on the canvas. Works from this period are increasingly rare and remain pivotal to understanding mid-century American abstraction. It sold for $194 million.

Paul Cézanne, The Card Players (1892–93)

A pink wall, man in white shirt holding up a golden framed painting of two men playing chess

One of the most quietly radical paintings of the 19th century, Cézanne’s depiction of two men absorbed in a game conveys stability and structure through a rigorously constructed composition sold for $341 million. It helped reframe the foundations of modern art.

Jackson Pollock, Number 17A (1948)

Pollock’s 1948 works are the essence of his drip-painting breakthrough. Number 17A embodies the immediacy and controlled chaos that made him the figure of Abstract Expressionism and commanded $274 million.

Willem de Kooning, Interchange (1955)

Interchange sits at the moment de Kooning began shifting between abstraction and figuration, creating a kinetic surface that feels both spontaneous and deliberate. It is often cited as the most important work of his mid-1950s output. The painting sold for $467 million.

Francis Bacon, Three Studies of Lucian Freud (1969)

A man taking a photo of three painting in gold frames ide by side

Bacon’s triptych of Lucian Freud is a psychological confrontation as much as a portrait. Each panel isolates Freud in a cage-like space, intensifying the fraught relationship between the two artists. The work sold for $215 million.

Cricket star Glenn McGrath tells the story of his country childhood https://www.homestolove.com.au/lifestyle/glenn-mcgrath-young-country-childhood/ Fri, 21 Nov 2025 02:33:29 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/cricket-star-glenn-mcgraths-country-childhood-13672 The boy from Narromine who became a cricketing legend reveals how working the family farm helped form his strength of character

The post Cricket star Glenn McGrath tells the story of his country childhood appeared first on Homes To Love.

]]>
In 2012, Country Style sat down with a then 42-year-old Glenn McGrath as the SCG prepared to host its 100th test cricket match. Speaking with writer Ali Gripper, the (now-retired) cricketing legend spoke about his outback childhood, reflecting on his years spent growing up in Lagoona, his family’s 460-hectare sheep and wheat property near NSW Narromine.

Now, the 55-year-old spends his days continuing his work as the president and co-founder of the McGrath Foundation, which has been supporting breast cancer care for 20 years. Glenn also works in sports commentary and is set to call the 2025 Ashes for the BBC.

No matter how much time has passed, Glenn’s memories of country life still ring true. Keep reading for a trip through the My Country Childhood archives with Glenn McGrath.

In his own words: Glenn McGrath’s country life

This story was originally published in the March 2012 issue of Country Style magazine.

When I was three we moved from a farm in Dubbo to another property at Narromine. I loved growing up in the bush and the freedom it offered. My brother Dale and I would come home from school and ride to the paddocks on the motorbike or work on the tractor and help feed the stock, and I still crave that sense of openness and space we had growing up there.

It was flat country. Apart from the trees down the back and at the front gate, it was all open paddocks. We had some big floods come through, but that’s the lifeblood of the country.

We lived in a typical weatherboard home — my brother Dale, sister Donna, Mum Bev and Dad Kevin. In my mind it was a huge home, but when I went back there years later it seemed so much smaller than it was in my memory.

Growing up on a farm gives you a real sense of independence and a good work ethic, which you take with you all your life. You learn to do things by yourself at an early age. We’d drive four or five kilometres to the school bus and leave the car at a neighbour’s place for the day. You’d try and work out things by yourself, rather than ask for help.

At school, I was fairly shy. It took me a while to get my confidence up. To speak in front of the class was something I couldn’t do; I hated it.

Now I can speak to 100 people for an hour without notes. But I don’t see myself as any different now to who I was when I left Narromine.

My parents split up when I was 15 and we sold the farm. Mum lives in Dubbo now and Dad’s between Gilgandra and Dubbo. They were both very country people — they would treat people the way you want to be treated and had a real sense of humility. They taught the three of us to work hard and try and make the most of life and they’re just as proud of Donna and Dale as they are of me.

Dad was always out working and would come home for breakfast, dinner and tea. Or he’d take his Esky and a thermos with him for lunch.

Mum ran the school canteen. I was always very sporty and sport is often big in the bush — it’s a way of bringing the community together, whether it’s cricket, golf or tennis. When I was 11 or 12 I played golf, then basketball, but I always loved cricket. If you’d asked me back then what I wanted to do it would have been to play cricket for Australia as a fast bowler. But I was a late starter.

I played my first representative game when I was 17. I played cricket because I loved it, not because I could make money out of it. Before I went to Sydney, I was only playing the odd rep game on a Sunday and doing one day’s training. It was a big contrast going from that to playing for Sutherland at 19 and within four years playing for Australia.

It was also my first time out of home. I bought a caravan in Dubbo and Mum and I towed it to Sydney and then I lived in it by myself for the first 13 months in a caravan park — the Grand Pines at Sans Souci, Botany Bay. I had to cook, clean, wash and iron for myself. Mum helped me settle in and then said goodbye.

We thought a caravan was a good idea because I didn’t know anyone in Sydney. I also had great memories of holidays in caravans. We always went to a place called Northhaven, near Port Haven, for Christmas holidays. The milk van and the baker would come along every day.

Living in the caravan wasn’t great but it helped me focus on what I was in Sydney for: to play cricket.

I started playing in the second grade, then the next year it was first grade and after that I was invited to the Cricket Academy in Adelaide.

I was ready for a change when I left Narromine but I miss the bush a lot. Now, having a family of my own and because of what I do, I’m fairly settled here in the city. I think of myself as a sociable person but I like getting out in the open away from everything. If I haven’t been out there for a while I can feel a sort of tension in myself. Even if it’s only for three days, I can unwind and recharge my batteries. Then I’m ready to go again.

About Narromine

This small town of around 6,ooo people, lying 40 kilometres west of Dubbo, has produced several sports stars besides Glenn McGrath, such as sprinter Melinda Gainsford-Taylor. Glenn says the many sporting facilities and time to practise create the perfect training ground for budding athletes. The town also has one of the oldest gliding clubs in Australia, enjoying some of the best thermal wind conditions in the world. Sport aside, agriculture is the main industry, specifically sheep, cattle and wool production.

Where does Glenn McGrath live now?

Glenn McGrath now lives in the Noosa Hinterland on the Sunshine Coast with his wife, Sara and daughter, Madison, while Glenn’s older children, James and Holly, live interstate.

An exhaustive exploration of every Met Gala theme in its sartorial history https://www.homestolove.com.au/lifestyle/culture-lifestyle/standout-met-gala-themes-history/ Thu, 20 Nov 2025 23:18:42 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/?p=1296095 The announcement of the 2026 Met Gala theme offers the perfect moment to look back at the concepts that have shaped its history

The post An exhaustive exploration of every Met Gala theme in its sartorial history appeared first on Homes To Love.

Taking place annually, the Met Gala has firmly positioned itself as the most important fashion event. The ancillary theme dictates dress code and décor, and complements the adjoining exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Each year’s concept corresponds to the Costume Institute’s major exhibition, anchoring the gala in something more than celebrity pageantry. The theme offers designers and guests a creative brief, shaping silhouette, references and the broader mood of the not-always-red carpet. It alchemises what could be a directionless procession of gowns into a cultural conversation, placing fashion in dialogue with art, history and society.

With the recent announcement of the prodigious theme being Costume Art the inherent relationship between clothing and the body we thought it was time to take a look back at the archives and get nostalgic over some of the most memorable Met Gala themes.

1999 – Rock Style

two women wearing shirts that say 'ROCK Royalty' and jeans posing
Image: getty

Rock Style was a Costume Institute exhibition created in collaboration with the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, on view from late 1999 to early 2000. The exhibition traced the influence of more than 40 rock ’N’ roll performers on fashion from the 1950s onward, presenting memorabilia drawn from institutional archives and the private collections of musicians themselves. Figures such as Elvis Presley, The Beatles, Aretha Franklin, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, David Bowie, Tina Turner, Elton John, Stevie Nicks, Bruce Springsteen, Grace Jones, Madonna and Björk buoyed the ongoing dialogue between rock music and style.

2004 – Dangerous Liaisons: Fashion and Furniture in the 18th Century

Image: getty

Drawing on the world of Choderlos de Laclos’s Dangerous Liaisons, the 2025 annual gala explored an era in which romantic intrigue seduction, manipulation, strategic affairs shaped the patterns of elite society. The accompanying exhibit traced how instruction, seduction and social manoeuvring defined the period, following characters such as Cécile and Valmon as they navigated a courtly landscape where intimacy functioned as currency and competition.

2006 – Anglomania: Tradition and Transgression in British Fashion

A man in a red dress posing with a man in red top, sparkly pants and black jacket on red carpet stairs
Image: getty

The 2006 concept aligned with AngloMania – an exhibit that traced the rise of Anglomania in Europe during the eighteenth century. The theme examined how English culture from the class system and pageantry to sport, eccentricity, the country garden and the figure of the gentleman shaped European and American imagination. Drawing on references from Samuel Richardson’s novels to the paintings of George Stubbs and William Hogarth, the exhibition explored how “Englishness” emerged as a construct fashioned through external fascination and the narratives the English cultivated themselves.

2008 – Superheroes: Fashion and Fantasy

A gallery room with a red dress and floating red hat

The 2008 Met Gala turned its attention to the influence of the superhero, tracing how both costume and superhuman attributes speed, strength and agility filtered into streetwear and high fashion. With the ancillary exhibit examining the ways pop-cultural archetypes can influence silhouettes, materials and the broader visual of contemporary style. Additionally, taking a closer look at how radical couture, avant-garde sportswear and state-of-the-art military garments as seen through the lens of the superhero can be metaphors for sex, power and politics.

2016 – Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology

A blonde woman standing on a red carpet wearing a pink gown
Image: getty

Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology was the 2016 concept that saw the evolving relationship between handmade craft and machine-led production. The accompanying Costume Institute exhibition showcased more than 100 pieces of haute couture and ready-to-wear, tracing how technology reshapes fashion’s traditional boundaries. On the red carpet, Claire Danes appeared in a gown illuminated by integrated lighting, while Emma Watson wore a five-piece Calvin Klein Collection look crafted from recycled plastic bottles.

2018 – Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination

The 2018 Met Gala theme, Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination, unfolded as one of the most ambitious Costume Institute exhibitions, bringing together hundreds of religious objects, including dozens of rarely seen artifacts loaned directly from the Vatican. On the red carpet, guests embraced the night’s ecclesiastical brief with theatrical precision, marking the year as one of the gala’s most visually arresting interpretations.

2021 – About Time: Fashion and Duration

Inspired by the red, white and blue silk sash from Prabal Gurung’s 10th-anniversary collection, the 2021 Met Gala theme titled In America: A Lexicon of Fashion focused on contemporary American design. The accompanying exhibit coalesced more than 100 works from designers spanning Marc Jacobs to La Réunion, forming a survey of modern American craftmanship. The evening’s interpretation of the official dress code, American Independence, grounded the night within the broader conversation surrounding American fashion identity.

2025 – Superheroes: Fashion and Fantasy

The Met Gala theme for 2025 centred on the Costume Institute’s spring exhibition Superfine: Tailoring Black Style, organised by head curator Andrew Bolton with guest curator Monica Miller, proffer of Africana Studies at Barnard College and Columbia University. Miller, whose 2009 tome Salves to Fashion examined Black dandyism and diasporic identity, helped shape an exhibition that pays homage to the late André Leon Talley. Guests catalysed he theme in looks that dissected the finer points of tailoring a fitting gesture for a Costume Institute exhibition notable as the first since 2003 to focus exclusively on menswear.

2024 – Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion

2023 – Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty

2022 – In America: An Anthology of Fashion

What is the 2026 Met Gala theme?

The Met Gala 2026 theme is Costume Art, which aligns with the Costume Institute’s exhibition of the same name. The theme examines fashion as a form of art, highlighting the relationship between clothing, the body and cultural expression.

Does Met Gala have a theme every year?

Yes. The Met Gala has a yearly theme that determines the event’s dress code and décor, and aligns with the accompanying exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Each year’s concept reflects the Costume Institute’s major exhibition, providing a cohesive framework for the gala.

What is the purpose of Met Gala?

The Met Gala is held each year to raise funds for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute, the museum’s only self-funded department. It also serves to open the institute’s annual fashion exhibition.

Celebrating Christmas at home is not without its stressors. Although you don’t have to drive anywhere, if you’re hosting, there’s a lot to think about and do. There are beds to make, towels to wash, meals to cook… Then there’s the small matter of where everyone will sleep – often the house is chock-full. Well, that’s the way it is with my extended family. It’s like Tetris!

A destination Christmas is the answer, and Linnaeus Farm, located just outside Berry on the NSW South Coast, is the perfect place to get away, in pure luxury no less.

It’s a magical spot. The two-storey cottage is in fact two houses in one building, and can cater for up to 12 guests. Each floor has its own gourmet kitchen and separate living areas. On the ground floor there are three bedrooms and two bathrooms; upstairs there are two bedrooms with a balcony leading off them and one bathroom. There is another top-level balcony that is accessible from the living area and via outside stairs. Two families can stay together, but everyone has their own space.

An outdoor pool in the country

Then there are the expansive, well-manicured grounds which are perfect for picnics, spreading out a blanket and reading, and letting the kids run wild. There’s also an amazing treehouse, complete with a slide, for the littlies – Linnaeus Farm is a children’s wonderland.

Did I mention the pool? It’s huge – big enough for the entire family – and the sunloungers offer stunning views of the escarpment and Saddleback Mountain.

The property also boasts an olive grove, orchard and edible garden planted in raised beds. Two dams provide water views – one has a hut over the water for meditation and yoga.

Guests can also take advantage of the wellness offerings at Linnaeus Farm, including an infrared sauna, outdoor sauna and cold plunge. For those seeking downtime, the deep bathtub and rain-shower heads offer bathing bliss, with Leif products on hand.

Stay at Linneus Farm

With 360 degree views of the rolling green countryside and dramatic Saddleback Mountains, Linnaeus Farm is a luxury country property perfect for family holidays. The home accommodates 10 guests in five bedrooms with 3.5 bathrooms over two floors.

It’s the perfect setting to slow down and connect with nature, and will leave you feeling much more relaxed than when you checked in. To wrap up the day, enjoy a game of petanque and then sit by the fire pit. The stars are simply spectacular on a clear night.

All guests are gifted a generous welcome bag of local treats, and can enjoy sampling the Linnaeus Collection bespoke blends by The Berry Tea Shop.

Linnaeus Farm is a hard place to leave – the peace and quiet, the views, the ultra-comfortable beds. As you drive away from the cottage, it dawns on you that you are re-entering the hustle and bustle of the real world and leaving the countryside tranquillity behind. At least, until your next visit.

The revival of the dinner party – and how to host a night worth remembering https://www.homestolove.com.au/lifestyle/culture-lifestyle/how-to-host-a-dinner-party-worth-remembering/ Wed, 19 Nov 2025 00:48:37 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/?p=1295529 Why the dinner party’s return feels timely – and needed

The post The revival of the dinner party – and how to host a night worth remembering appeared first on Homes To Love.

]]>
The dinner party was originally reflective of social order before its democratisation, and later decline in the 20th century, when the rise of restaurants, women’s paid work and ready-made meals made formal entertaining less common – that was until the resurgence. While it cannot be confined to a singular reason, its revival is intimate, sustainable and aesthetic. With pandemic lockdowns reframing home cooking and social media making intimate dinners aspirational again, communal eating has gained traction – with the likes of Club Sup reacting to this cultural craving.

Dinner Parties Are Making a Comeback

Originating in 2021, founder Sophie McIntyre harkened to the need for human-centric experiences and conceived Club Sup as a modern supper club designed to connect people in the wake of lockdowns. “[Club Sup] started in 2021 after I had spent some of my early 20s feeling a bit lonely and lost after a big breakup. I had moved into a share house and met the people in my life that completely changed the way I thought about myself and the future,” says Sophie. “It gave me so much confidence, love and light and I wanted everyone to have a way to access that.” From there, what was designed as a prodigious passion project grew in scale, with Club Sup now hosting transcontinental events – in London and Australia.

An outdoor setting with a table in a body of water, mountains, people eating with umbrellas
Image: @stevecordony

However, the growth hasn’t solely scaled continents but the meaning behind the gatherings. “I think eating or sharing a meal is one of the most human things we do across so many walks of life and cultures,” adds Sophie. “Nearly everyone feels good when they’re eating so yes it was always going to be a meal – although as we have grown we have expanded into to new events like lunches, book swaps or crafts.” Hosting more than 150 events spanning Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane – and buoyed by the 1,500-plus guests who have been brought together – it’s unsurprising that Club Sup has caught the eye of revered brands such as Ganni, The Ordinary and Penfolds.

“We’re seeing that all Gen Z want is to get offline and live real experiences as they’ve lived so much of their lives online. Club Sup will always be there for people to come together and connect,” adds Sophie.

How to Host a Dinner Party

Hosting a modern dinner party today is as much about atmosphere as it is about food. When thinking about how to host a dinner party, start with the intention rather than the menu.

Begin with an arrival – a cocktail, perhaps, or a small plate that encourages guests to linger. Lighting should be low and flattering, with candlelight or shaded lamps creating softness. Choose music that sits just behind the conversation, and scents that complement rather than compete with the meal.

Conversation, not presentation, remains the true measure of a good host. Encourage flow rather than perfection – serve dishes that can be shared, poured and passed. A simple roast chicken with a generous side or a bowl of pasta finished at the table is as impressive as any tasting menu. In 2025, dinner party trends lean toward sustainability and sentiment. Guests value provenance – seasonal produce, hand-thrown ceramics, linen napkins that have lived a little.

“[At Club Sup] we curate the right feeling for people to be safe and comfortable to connect and the rest is up to everyone else. Because every event is different with a different list of people and you have to allow for that – you have to allow for everyone’s lives and experiences to shape the event,” says Sophie. “So the structure is the brand I have built and the spontaneity is the people that join us.”

The simplest advice? Curate. Create an evening that feels designed yet effortless – one that moves at the pace of good conversation and leaves guests reluctant to leave.

I tested three viral spot cleaners — and my favourite is now on sale https://www.homestolove.com.au/lifestyle/cleaning/bissell-spot-clean-25197/ Tue, 18 Nov 2025 04:43:11 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/bissell-spot-clean-25197 I put the three to the test, and one definitely fell flat...

The post I tested three viral spot cleaners — and my favourite is now on sale appeared first on Homes To Love.

]]>
A spot cleaner can be a real game changer when it comes to lounges, carpets and other areas of the house. But prices and quality can vary wildly, so I was keen to put three popular options to the test: the Bissell SpotClean, Kmart’s “dupe” Anko Spot Cleaner (also sold at Target), and the Shark StainStriker.

Let me start by divulging this vital information: I have a puppy and a husband. He’s a tradie (the latter, obviously) meaning he comes home in dust-ridden clothes and settles on our sofa in them, usually arriving before I’m there to tell him not to. Sometimes, he even rolls around on it with the aforementioned puppy, who is also guilty of bringing the odd goat horn, bully stick or leaf pile up there with him. Yes, all on our beautiful, fairly expensive, light greige sofa.

Explore our cleaning guides below:

It recently came to my attention that after much puppy/husband activity, our sofa was not so beautiful, or even so light-greige anymore. Admittedly, I am guilty of the occasional Sunday night meal on the sofa in front of the TV – a forbidden pleasure never permitted to me as a child – so perhaps the two boys in my household are not solely to blame. Alas, I have been looking forlornly at our sofa and all of its dirt spots for many months now and wondering what can be done.

Enter the carpet and upholstery spot cleanr; a magical tool that simultaneously soap-washes your fabrics while sucking up all the gross stuff. Keep scrolling to read my review on these viral spot cleaners.

Best spot cleaner roundup

What is the best spot cleaner?

In the Australian market, there are three front runners: the Bissell Spot Clean, Shark StainStriker, and the (viral) Anko — Kmart and Target — spot cleaner. In what was some form of divine intervention, I was lent all three to put to the test and, aside from getting a very clean sofa at the end, here’s my review of how it all went down (as well as a bit about each spot cleaner).

Update: Since writing this review, Bissell has released a newer version of the SpotClean, which is selling for $349 at Amazon

The Anko Kmart spot cleaner

The Anko spot cleaner, available at Kmart and Target.

Anko spot cleaner

$99 at Target

A much cheaper alternative, Anko’s version retails for just $99, a feature that saw it go viral and quickly sell out when it was first released in Kmart and Target.

Like the Bissell model I reviewed, the Anko spot cleaner comes with the unit and various accessories and attachments, including a vertical nozzle, vacuum floor heads an attached scrub brush, and even dog brushes, so you can use it to wash your four-legged friend. Dimensions-wise it is very similar to the Bissell and comes in at much the same weight.

Weight: 3.4kg

Sizes: 30.7cm H x 29.2cm W x 15.2cm D

Key features:

 • 3-metre power cord
 • 1L tank capacity
 • Approximately 450ml/min water jet flow
 • Maximum water temperature 40 degrees
 • 12-month manufacturer’s warranty

The Shark StainStriker

Shark StainStriker spot cleaner.

Shark StainStriker portable carpet and upholstery cleaner

$249.99 at Amazon

Cult cleaning brand Shark has also made an impression with their upholstery spot cleaner: the StainStriker. And with a name like that, how could I not try it out?

The Shark StainStriker spot cleaner comes with an integrated crevice tool (love that), as well as a stain tool, wide stain tool, pet tool (for cleaning up stains with…um…solids?), a bottle of Carpet Xpert Deep Clean Pro, and one of OxyMultiplier. The cord length sits in between Anko and Bissell at 3.6 metres, and boasts a nice and compact design that comes in at just a little above the others.

Weight: 3.943kg

Sizes: 30cm H x 30cm W x 26cm D

Colour: White

Key features:

 • 3.6-metre cord
 • Dual-activated stain removal
 • Pet tool with chamber for solids
 • Easy to assemble
 • 2-year warranty

Bissell SpotClean vs Anko Spot Cleaner vs Shark StainStriker: which is better?

To be honest, on an operational level, the differences between the Bissell SpotClean, Anko spot cleaner, and Shark StainStriker are fairly minimal and come down to four things: the brush sizes, the cord length, the spray function, and the cost. However, there was one final factor that would later come into play: the product’s lifespan. But more on that below.

Brush size

While Anko’s model comes with more tools, Bissell’s ‘equivalent’ tool (i.e. the one with the scrubbing-brush-like head) is slightly larger in size. For a sofa, this didn’t bother me much, but if a carpet or even a rug were the husband-and-puppy victim, I would probably prefer Bissell’s larger attachment. I will also say that Anko’s accessories were difficult to swap out and I almost broke a nail several times. Neither issue was a concern at all with the Shark StainStriker, which comes with both a regular and wide brush, which may even prove enough to motivate me to tackle our bedroom carpet one day… Plus, I love Shark’s pet tool, which has a chamber to capture all the solid-ish yuck should an ‘accident’ occur.

Cord length

Again, a fairly minimal detail, but considering I live in a circa 1970s-ish apartment where power outlets are few and far between, this is a consideration I would be forced to make. Bissell’s cord was the longest at 4.5 metres, followed by Shark’s 3.6 metres, then Anko’s 3 metres. At first, I didn’t think this would be too much of a problem, despite having to create a hazard across our kitchen doorway with the cord, but I really noticed the difference. For me, Bissell wins out here: the more cord, the merrier. It also meant I had the extra wiggle (or spray) room needed without having to twist the machine at awkward angles or hold it while I worked (none of them are light).

The spray function

All three machines work by spraying soapy water onto your sofa/carpet/rug/car seat and sucking it back up as you scrub. This means that no matter which you use, you’ll end up with a slightly damp surface for a few hours. However, Anko’s spray function is noticeably strong and soaks through more, which could be a con for those who have poor ventilation (and therefore drying ability), or kids/pets who are unlikely to be able to keep off while the freshly washed item dries.

The cost

This is by far the biggest draw card for Anko — with an almost identical result it would be hard to say no to $150+ in savings.

The product’s lifespan

Last but most importantly, which of these products lasts the distance? It’s all well and good to clean up a cheeky pasta sauce spill here or a dirty dog pawprint there, but I need this thing to put in the hours without breaking a sweat…or just breaking. Which, unfortunately, the Anko model would eventually do. Twice.

Yes, it’s true. I cannot recommend an Anko Spot Cleaner. Many reviewers have had excellent experiences with theirs, but sadly my first one had a trigger malfunction, and its replacement suffered the same fate, at no fault of my own might I add.

If you’ve bought into the white boucle trend, you’re going to want to read on. (Photo: Kmart)

The verdict: is it worth getting a spot cleaner?

For me, it is a resounding yes. As annoying as they are, puppy and husband are not going anywhere and have proven they can only be tamed so much. So for my household, a spot cleaner is a literal miracle in small appliance form.

I can confidently say that both the Bissell SpotClean and the Shark StainStriker would be equally great choices. As mentioned, I was let down by Anko’s spot cleaner but I thoroughly enjoyed it up until then, and many have nothing but shining reviews for it – plus, the cost is hard to say no to!

What about other brands?

This review focuses on the three spot cleaners I got to test out from Bissell, Shark and Anko (Kmart or Target). But if you want to shop around more, here are some other spot cleaners on the market in Australia that have stood out to us.

Vax Platinum SpotWasher
(VACSC21E) is a top-selling spot cleaner.

Vax Platinum Spot Wash cleaner

$298.95 at Amazon

This spot cleaner combines powerful suction and deep cleaning to remove spills and stains on carpet, upholstery, car interiors and even hardwood floors. It has an average rating of 4.5 stars from over 320 reviews on The Good Guys website, where it’s also listed as a “Top Seller”.

“Honestly it exceeded my expectations. I purchased in preparation for a baby on the way [in a] carpeted house however, I have already used it on car seats, carpet spots, an armchair and more,” one customer shared in a detailed 5-star review, adding, “I suggest using only a drop of the soap provided because otherwise it’s a soapy mess and more work to try and remove. Sometimes I use it without soap too for fresh spills. Would recommend.”

Weight: 3.9kg

Sizes: 42.5cm H x 26.5cm W x 39.5cm D

Colour: Red

Key features:

 • 4.5-metre cord
 • 1.5-metre hose with self-cleaning function
 • Multi-surface and hard-floor attachments
 • 2-year warranty

Karcher SE 3-18 Ultra Clean Compact Cordless Spot Cleaner.

Karcher SE 3-18 cordless spot cleaner

$408.18 at Amazon

Karcher is another brand that has garnered interest for its spot cleaners. It only had a handful of reviews on The Good Guys, but they were all 4- or 5-stars when we checked and it has a 4.7-star average from over 60 customer reviews on the Karcher website, where one customer even said it was “better than my old Bissell”.

As a further comparison to the Bissell spot cleaner we tested, this is a cordless model with a long 1.9m hose, and has a larger water tank capacity (1.7L fresh and 2.9L dirty). So you could weigh that up against the price.

Weight: 3.64kg

Sizes: 31.7cm H x 24cm W x 35cm D

Colour: Yellow

Key features:

 • Cordless operation with 18V battery and a fast charger included

Get ready, because the epic second instalment of Wicked is almost here. Set to hit screens on Thursday, Wicked: For Good will bring fans the same star-studded cast, big musical numbers and jaw-dropping sets that earned the film a whopping $250 million at the box office, two Academy Awards and the title of most successful Broadway film adaptation of all time.

Directed by Jon M. Chu and starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, the cinematic retelling of the hit musical wows in every aspect, but particularly in terms of its set design and world-building. In the first film, Chu introduces us to a breathtakingly grand and enchanting Oz, with soaring ceilings and curvaceous architecture; the same Oz that was created from an approximately $230 million budget.

Here, we take a look at the creation of Oz, from film locations to the film’s production designer, and marvel at Wicked‘s incredible set design.

Where were Wicked and Wicked: For Good filmed?

The magical world of Oz was largely created within Sky Studios Elstree in Hertfordshire, London, which is also where the upcoming Wuthering Heights movie was filmed. In creating the grandiose world of Oz, production took over all of Sky Studios’ 13 sound stages, as well as another six at the nearby Leavesden Studios – where all the Harry Potter movies were filmed – according to Radio Times. A further three back lots were also built to create exterior sets, with their construction taking up to five months.

Other film locations include the small English village of Ivinghoe, where Munchkinland was created, as well as a nursery in Norfolk, where nine million tulips were planted for Munchkinland.

Who designed the sets of Wicked and Wicked: For Good?

British production designer Nathan Crowley designed the jaw-dropping sets of Wicked and Wicked: For Good, and cited Wicked as easily the largest film he’s ever worked on. And, as impossibly grand as Oz appears in the film, the set was created, mostly, without CGI.

All in all, the creation of Oz took around six to seven months and a crew of around 1000 people, with the film’s sets spanning 19 sound stages and three giant back lots.

Crowley, who was behind the set design of The Dark Knight and Interstellar, imbued Oz with Americana-style retro-futurism in the form of colossal animatronics and curvaceous details, as exemplified by the 32-tonne steamer train, the Emerald City Express.

“The Wizard of Oz is an American fairy tale, so you need America in it,” he told Radio Times. “A big train in an endless Midwestern barley field is a very American image, so then I was in the business of growing barley as well!”

When does Wicked: For Good come out?

Wicked: For Good is set to be released on Thursday, November 20, here in Australia, although some cinemas are offering advance screenings on Wednesday, November 19.

Is a robot vacuum worth it?

Robot vacuums have come a long way since they first launched in Australia. From improvements in suction power and AI obstacle detection technology to new functionalities like mopping and the ability to self-empty and clean, robot vacuums are no longer just a gimmick – there are genuinely helpful products on the market.

“Robotic vacuums have come a long way in a short time, so now that we’ve established a baseline of quality, we’re seeing a lot of excitement and enthusiasm for the latest technology advancements in our newest range of robotic vacuums,” Karen Powell, Head of ECOVACS for Australia and New Zealand told Homes to Love.

She said survey data showed that robotic vacuums and mops were among the most popular smart appliances in Australia.

“More people are looking to buy a robot vacuum than they are a new TV, coffee machine or air purifier,” she added.

A robot vacuum is the most efficient way to keep your home clean and pet hair-free. (Photo: ECOVACS)

“Today, robot vacuums have the ability to compete with traditional vacuums in terms of suction power, are able to move around the house thanks to proprietary AI obstacle detection technology, and can both mop and vacuum in a single pass,” Karen said. “You can now set schedules remotely and essentially leave it to its own devices as it cleans autonomously.”

“It’s been a big feat, but I genuinely believe Australians are responding to this and realising the huge benefits such products can bring to their day-to-day lives.”

What to consider when choosing a robot vacuum

There is a big difference between a very basic robot vacuum (which might have trouble bumping into things, for example) and those with more advanced technology. So when you want to find the best robot vacuum for your home, here are six key factors to consider:

– Performance and performance features
– Efficiency
– Warranty and maintenance requirements
– Design and size

Beloved British treat Percy Pigs to arrive in Australia https://www.homestolove.com.au/lifestyle/percy-pigs-australia-coles/ Mon, 17 Nov 2025 00:19:49 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/?p=1295525 Here's where to buy the cult-favourite sweet

The post Beloved British treat Percy Pigs to arrive in Australia appeared first on Homes To Love.

]]>
If you’ve ever met a Brit who’s lived in Australia, you’ve probably heard them mourn the lack of Marks & Spencer’s iconic Percy Pigs. What seems to be the most popular souvenir request for anyone making the trip over the pond, the iconic raspberry and strawberry gummy lollies in the shape of little pigs are a beloved delicacy for anyone who has spent any time in the UK. So much so, that travellers are filling their luggage to the brim with the sugary sweet.

But, the impassioned pleas and suitcase-stuffing of Percy Pigs for anyone visiting the UK can be a distant memory, now that Coles has announced it will be stocking the M&S brand locally in stores from November 19th.

“2025 has been a year of adventure… We’re coming, Australia – 19/11/2025.” a teaser post shared to the official Percy Pigs Instagram page read. Marks & Spencer confirmed it too: “The rumours are true… We’re bringing the magic of M&S Food Down Under.”

The arrival of Marks and Spencer lollies to Coles in Australia has caused nothing short of a shopper frenzy, with one commenting “It’s a Christmas miracle!!” and another saying “I’m going to be spending so much money at Coles.”

It’s being reported that two M&S branded lollies will be arriving in Australia: the iconic Percy Pig gummies and Colin the Caterpillar sours.

Percy Pigs are chewy fruit gummies in the shape of little pink pig faces made from real fruit juice: raspberry, grape, elderberry, blackcurrant, and mandarin.

Colin the Caterpillar sours are vegan gummies with a sour sugar coating, available in pineapple-orange, peach-mango, and raspberry-lemon.

The range also includes fan favourites, like Percy Pig Phizzy Pigtails, Percy Pig Piglets, Percy Pig Reversy Percy, Colin the Caterpillar Fruit Gums, Colin the Caterpillar Party Time, Colin the Caterpillar Cola Gums and Colin the Caterpillar Cherry Gums.

And just in time for Christmas, we could also be seeing a few other recognisable M&S classics on our shelves including Scottish Shortbread, Luxury Gold Tea Bags and The Original Very Moreish Munch Tin.

Where to buy Percy Pigs in Australia

Fans of Percy Pigs will need only visit one grocery store moving forward: Coles Supermarkets will be the official Australian stockist of the M&S range from the 19th November, with Percy Pigs priced at $6 per bag.

The set design for Emerald Fennell’s ‘Wuthering Heights’ is a feast for the eyes https://www.homestolove.com.au/lifestyle/wuthering-heights-emerald-fennell-movie/ Fri, 14 Nov 2025 03:02:14 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/?p=1295348 Get ready for the steamiest interpretation of Emily Brontë's story to date

The post The set design for Emerald Fennell’s ‘Wuthering Heights’ is a feast for the eyes appeared first on Homes To Love.

]]>
The official trailer for the upcoming adaptation of Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights has been released today, giving fans a glimpse at the steamy, Gothic film, starring Frankenstein’s Jacob Elordi and Barbie‘s Margot Robbie.

Directed by Emerald Fennell, who wrote and directed Saltburn and Promising Young Woman, the 2026 iteration of the iconic love story won’t be a faithful adaptation of the novel, as made evident by the highly suggestive close-up shots, the electro-pop soundtrack by Charli xcx and, most pertinently, the surrealist set design.

Where was Emerald Fennell’s Wuthering Heights filmed?

The upcoming Wuthering Heights movie was largely filmed in North Yorkshire and at Sky Studios Elstree. Dramatic scenes of Cathy and Heathcliffe out in the moors were reportedly captured in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Other film locations included Arkengarthdale, Swaledale and the village of Low Row, according to the BBC.

And while the rugged natural landscapes of the North Yorkshire countryside present a beautiful backdrop to the tragic story of Wuthering Heights, it was the glimpses of the interiors that caught our eyes. Dark, moody and minimalist, Emerald Fennell’s surrealist interpretation of the setting, as executed by production designer Suzie Davies, is decidedly modern and incredibly visually arresting.

A full tour of the Wuthering Heights set was captured by content creator Charlotte Roberts, revealing avant-garde design details like braided hair adorning the bed canopy, textural, fleshy pink walls, tiny metallic insect sculptures and wall sconces in the shape of hands. This won’t be your classic retelling of Wuthering Heights!

Where can I watch the trailer for Wuthering Heights?

The official trailer for the upcoming adaptation of Wuthering Heights by Emerald Fennell has just dropped. You can watch the trailer in all its steamy glory here.

Who is cast in the new Wuthering Heights film?

Emerald Fennell’s adaptation of Wuthering Heights stars Australian actors Margot Robbie as Catherine Earnshaw and Jacob Elordi as Heathcliff.

The film also stars Alison Oliver as Isabella Linton, Shazad Latif as Edgar Linton, Martin Clunes as Mr. Earnshaw and Hong Chau as Nelly Dean. In the roles of young Heathcliff and young Catherine are Owen Cooper of Adolescence fame and Charlotte Mellington.

When will the new Wuthering Heights film be released?

The new Wuthering Heights film is set to be released on February 12, 2026, here in Australia, while in the UK and US, the highly anticipated film will hit screens on February 13, 2026.

Should you choose a walking pad or a treadmill?

Walking pads have become increasingly popular in Australia as more people in full-time, work from home and hybrid roles recognise the benefits of integrating movement into their routines. Walking pads are not only an affordable alternative to treadmills, but they are also more compact, portable and are designed to fit under a standing desk, which has become another popular home office addition to homes. Treadmills are a great option for those who have space in their home, and want more advanced features such as incline and faster speed.

From a health perspective, both a walking pad and a treadmill have physical benefits. However, a 2025 study on the effect of incline walking on lower extremity and trunk mechanics found that walking on a treadmill set at a 10% incline or steeper can reduce the stress on your knees. If you do choose a walking pad for its incline benefits, you may be better off with a treadmill due to its ability to obtain a higher incline, however a slight incline might give you some relief if you are susceptible to knee pain.

What are the benefits of a walking pad?

Walking pads allow users to stay active throughout the day, which can help improve physical health, boost productivity, and reduce the negative impacts of prolonged sitting. A 2018 study found that a simple walking program at home can meaningfully improve walking endurance, daily activity levels, and confidence in walking for people with peripheral artery disease (PAD).

If you are someone who sits eight hours a day for work, a walking pad can significantly improve your health. A small Harvard study of 11 adults found that sitting all day raises blood sugar and blood pressure, but taking five-minute walking breaks every 30 minutes significantly reduced both. Even shorter or less frequent walks lowered blood pressure slightly. Any walking after prolonged sitting can help cut cardiovascular risk, researchers say.

How do you choose a walking pad?

Walking pads offer a variety of features, so it’s important to consider how often you will use one, which features you need, and its storage capabilities. Compact and foldable options are ideal for small spaces. The Airhot walking pad can seamlessly fit under a sofa or bed, whereas the WalkingPad X21 features a double-fold design that can be easily stored in a cupboard. You should also check the maximum weight capacity and the size of the walking area to ensure the pad suits your height and stride.

Some walking pads offer app connectivity, remote controls, and adjustable speeds, which are useful if you want to monitor and control your workouts. Finally, take note of safety features, including non-slip surfaces and automatic shut-off controls.

Check out our comparison table above of the best walking pads in Australia to make your choice an easy one.

The TikTok creators living out their own version of ‘The Holiday’ https://www.homestolove.com.au/lifestyle/real-life-holiday-apartment-swap/ Thu, 13 Nov 2025 03:09:06 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/?p=1295165 What began as a casual offer to trade a New York flat for a London one has become social media’s most charming experiment

The post The TikTok creators living out their own version of ‘The Holiday’ appeared first on Homes To Love.

]]>
The plot of The Holiday has always appealed to a certain temperament: the seduction of slipping into someone else’s life for a week, adopting their view from the kitchen sink and enjoying the discreet privilege of moving through a neighbourhood where no one knows your name – unless, by chance you befriend an award-winning screenwriter and spend an evening honouring a lifetime of his work. In reality, the charm is simpler – the pleasure of anonymity, borrowed space and the brief permission to reimagine yourself.

On TikTok, two young creatives have found their own contemporary take on that fantasy. What began as a single video – Lohanny, in New York, asking whether anyone might like to swap apartments – quickly gathered momentum. Among the responses was a comment from Marie, who offered up her Notting Hill flat with the casual ease of someone suggesting a coffee order. The internet did the rest, propelling the pair into a viral experiment in transatlantic living and turning an impulsive exchange into a modern-day home-swap story watched by millions.

We spoke to Marie about how the idea unfolded, what it was like stepping into a stranger’s home on the other side of the world.

@lohannysant

Must be pet friendly bc my dog would join me 🤞🏼💕 dm me on instagram. I’m thinking sept to early oct. No roommates—a one bed flat prefered. Send me videos of your space!! #theholiday #nyc #london #apartmentswap

♬ The holiday theme – Siyana <3

What first drew you to the idea of swapping homes and cities with Lohanny?

I’ve always felt inspired by New York and loved every single trip I’ve taken there. It has always been a dream to experience living in the city, even if just for a short time. I truly love New York! A couple of years ago, I met a girl from New York online and we planned to do a home swap back then, but it fell through because of work commitments. After that, I kind of forgot about the idea until now.

How did the swap come about? Was it spontaneous or something you’d been dreaming about for a while?

I was sitting at home scrolling through TikTok one evening when I came across Lohanny’s video asking to swap with someone in London. Not thinking much of it, I left a little comment suggesting my flat in Notting Hill (the best part of the city, though I might be biased). I hadn’t seen much of Lohanny’s content before, so it really felt like this video was meant to find me. Her community loved the Notting Hill idea and suddenly my phone was flooded with notifications and supportive comments. That led to me sharing my flat online, connecting with Lohanny, and making the whole thing happen

What were your first impressions stepping into Lohanny‘s apartment?

It instantly felt so welcoming, like a home away from home. Lohanny had left me a sweet welcome sign and the atmosphere felt warm and personal, especially after such a long journey. It honestly felt like a dream come true.

@mariedrax

Made it to the apartment and it’s such a cute and cozy place! ❤ Never thought I’d be the one going inside to set up the camera and then go out again 🤣 but here we are, anything for The Holiday sounds 😅 Now I really need a shower and some sleep because tmrw is gonna be fabulous!

♬ original sound – Better days

Were there any small details – a book, something left on the counter – that told you something about Lohanny before you’d even met?

Absolutely! Her entire bookshelf was filled with books I’ve also read, which immediately made me feel like we had a lot in common. The little décor details and her art supplies also showed me she’s a very creative person. Through our chats, we quickly realised we share many similar interests.

Did you find yourselves adopting new rituals or routines while living in your swapped city?

I fully embraced the Lohanny experience. She left me a list of her favourite places, so I tried as many as possible I even had her go-to taco order at her local spot and most mornings started at one of her favourite coffee shops. Overall, I tried to channel her confidence and outgoing energy while exploring New York.

How would you describe the aesthetic of your own apartment and how does it reflect who you are?

I would describe my apartment as eclectic. I’ve lived and travelled all over the world and brought home little mementos from everywhere. I love mixing classic and modern design, like pairing a big gold ornate mirror with my silver drip metal candle holders from Pols Potten. I’m definitely more of a maximalist than a minimalist. Especially living in the city and working from home, I like being surrounded by plants and objects that make the space feel alive and inspiring.

@lohannysant

Do you like hanging out with me? Because I sure do like hanging out with you. @Marie 🌞 I’m loving it here. What did you do in New York today?? 💌 #london #Vlog #theholiday #solotravel #apartmentswap

♬ original sound – Lohanny

And what about the Lohanny‘s? Was there anything about their space that surprised or inspired you?

I loved how Lohanny’s art takes up such a central space in her apartment. I paint too, but I usually keep my supplies stored away, which makes it harder to create spontaneously. Seeing her art everywhere reminded me how important it is to have creativity visible and accessible in my daily life. I want to make more time for painting again.

Finally, what does home mean to you now?

Home to me has two meanings. On one hand, it’s my safe space where I can recharge, surrounded by all the little things that bring me joy. On the other hand, home is also about people. Growing up in Germany, I know I’ll always have that home home where my family is, a place I can return to no matter what to be with the people I love most.

Elphaba’s immersive Airbnb stay brings Wicked’s woodland aesthetic to life https://www.homestolove.com.au/lifestyle/travel/wicked-airbnb-elphaba-forest-hideaway/ Thu, 13 Nov 2025 00:36:39 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/?p=1295115 For anyone who’s ever daydreamed about slipping into a storybook

The post Elphaba’s immersive Airbnb stay brings Wicked’s woodland aesthetic to life appeared first on Homes To Love.

]]>
Airbnb has unveiled a new cinematic stay in time for the release of Wicked: For Good: a faithful recreation of Elphaba’s Forest hideaway, set just outside Los Angeles and conceived to emulate the character’s secluded woodland refuge. Built as part of a timed Wicked Airbnb experience, the whimsical retreat offers guests an opportunity to step into a reimagined corner of the film’s world.

A room made from tree roots, with pillows on the floor, a fire with a pot brewing, timber joinery and greenery in the corners
Image: Airbnb

Developed in partnership with Cynthia Erivo, who plays Elphaba, the hideaway forms part of Airbnb’s ongoing programme of limited-edition stays aligned with major cultural moments. It has been constructed as a standalone woodland-style dwelling rather than a literal forest cabin, allowing the design team to focus on atmosphere over geography and draw directly from the idyllic visuals of the film.

Inside, the retreat carries the woodland sensibility associated with Elphaba’s story. The palette is rooted firmly in deep green – a nod to the character – and is softened by unvarnished timber, rustic textures and an emphasis on natural materials. Additionally, dried flowers are threaded throughout the rooms, introducing moments of brightness against the darker tones.

For anyone drawn to the paradisical interiors, the Airbnb offers clear points of reference. Soft green upholstery provides colour without overwhelming a space, while organic timber surfaces and earth-led tones help ground the palette. Even the floral arrangements adopt an organic, slightly imperfect quality that avoids prettiness in favour of something more atmospheric. Together, these details echo broader design shifts already underway – the return to natural materials, a fondness for muted forest palettes, and an appreciation for interiors that feel as though they belong to a particular landscape, even when they are only borrowing from one.

When can you book it?

Airbnb is operating the stay through a request-to-book system. Bookings open 11 November at 3pm GMT and close 13 November at 3pm GMT. It functions as a limited-time experience, rather than an ongoing listing, aligning with other high-demand pop culture stays offered by Airbnb.

How much does it cost?

This stay forms part of a promotional event tied to the film. Guests can request to book the experience, which includes both overnight stays and dedicated activities. Airbnb has not announced a traditional nightly rate, as the programme operates more like a competition or exclusive access event than a standard holiday rental.

What the Wicked Airbnb experience includes

The itinerary for guests includes:

 • A fireside tea hosted by Cynthia Erivo
 • A multi-sensory sing-along, referencing the musical elements of Wicked
 • A creative workshop to build a witch’s broom, designed as a hands-on theatrical activity

The stay is built to resemble a short, self-contained immersion, rather than a traditional getaway.

Thanks to the advent of streaming services, we’re spoilt for choice when it comes to prestige TV. It takes more than just good plot twists and A-list actors to catch our eye these days; top-shelf set design and aspirational interiors are just as important as the characters.

The Perfect Couple wouldn’t be the same without Nicole Kidman’s Hamptons-style summer home. Keira Knightley’s upscale London townhouse in Black Doves was almost more thrilling than her martial arts skills. Severance would look pretty bleak without iconic midcentury furniture. Of course, reality renovation shows are brimming with interior design inspiration, as well.

It was a tough ask, but we binged a lot of television to curate this list of 2025’s best shows for interior design enthusiasts. Get the popcorn, and a notebook, ready.

01

Sirens

Come for the mystery, stay for the interior design and shingles-clad architecture. Netflix’s hit dramedy Sirens, featuring Julianne Moore and Australian Milly Alcock, centres around an affluent community on a fictitious island reminiscent of Nantucket or Cape Cod, specifically the sprawling picture-perfect mansion of Moore’s billionaire character, Kiki.

Classic colonial hallmarks, such as wainscoting and library ladders, abound, but there’s a modern edge to Kiki’s showcase ‘saltbox’ home, as per circular modern sofas and a wall of niches displaying coastal artefacts. A pastel colour palette of pink, turquoise and blue adds to the dream-like aesthetic of Sirens‘ set design, signalling that everything in Kiki’s elite bubble is too perfect to be true.

02

Anatomy of a Scandal

For a masterclass in traditional and elegant English styling, binge Anatomy of a Scandal this weekend. Sienna Miller and Rupert Friend’s characters’ London townhouse is a perfectly balanced, sumptuous interior featuring Cole & Son wallpapers, cosy furniture, ornate mouldings, many sconces and even more books. Heirloom artworks and a baby grand piano covered in picture frames point to generational wealth (Friend’s character is a Tory politician), and the whole set is bathed in golden light and beige furnishings with burgundy and green accents. Watch it for Miller’s monochromatic ‘quiet luxury’ wardrobe, too.

03

Succession

From Kendall Roy’s (Jeremy Strong) huge, modernised apartment in the historic Woolworth skyscraper to a European-inspired castle on Long Island (posing as a Hungarian hunting retreat), there’s no shortage of iconic New York architecture to drool over in Succession (streaming on Max). All the dramas besieging the dysfunctional, ultra-wealthy Roy family, featuring Australia’s own Sarah Snook as Shiv Roy, are set against a backdrop of luxurious interior design, ostentatious finishes and furniture pieces that probably cost more than the average person’s annual wage.

Now wrapped up after four seasons, it’s worth going back to Season 2 of Succession to peek inside the Roys’ summer house in Southhampton. The production designers commandeered Henry Ford II’s sprawling, 20-room 1960 estate, which sold for an eye-watering $145 million a few years ago. It’s not your cookie-cutter beach shack.

04

Farmhouse Fixer

For a dose of 90s nostalgia with your renovation reality TV, tune into Farmhouse Fixer (on Max). New Kids on The Block alumn Jonathan Knight has turned his passion for sensitively restoring old New England farmhouses into exquisite homes, alongside long-time friend and designer Kristina Crestin. Hardly a flash-in-the-pan scenario, Knight has been flipping houses since NKOTB disbanded in the mid-nineties, and he grew up helping his father and grandfather on construction sites. No job is too hard; some of the crumbling buildings Knight tackles on the show date back to the 1700s. Inspiring stuff.

05

Palm Royale

Watching Kristen Wiig’s splendorous Apple TV show, Palm Royale, is often like being dunked in a Slim Aarons photograph. Set in late-1960s Palm Beach, Florida, Wiig’s social climbing character Maxine tries to infiltrate an elite country club that channels Barbie’s dream house. Meanwhile, other interiors draw on the opulent maximalist style of Palm Beach’s old-money residents, with Italian and Spanish architectural influences.

A low-rent hairdressing salon, where Kaia Gerber’s character toils, emulates the newer midcentury modern aesthetic of the time, featuring tan and teal colours and clean lines. Laura Dern plays a hippy whose decor leans towards a freewheeling west-coast style, characterised by macrame, natural timbers and earthy tones. In short, Palm Royale pulls together all the contrasting interior styles of the era – without giving you whiplash.

06

Yellowstone

Arguably the forebearer of the ‘rich ranch’ aesthetic, Montana-set Yellowstone‘s production design is layered with solid timbers, cow hides, luxe leather, First Nations textiles and rustic accoutrements. Following the lives and trials (and crimes) of the powerful Dutton family, headed by Kevin Costner’s character, much of the drama ensues in the palatial great room of the Dutton lodge, featuring delineated sitting zones and an oversized stone fireplace that gives main-character energy. Think après-ski cabin meets working cattle farm.

Catch up on five seasons of Yellowstone on Stan or AppleTV, or better still, stay at Chief Joseph Ranch – the real property used in the show. While the main lodge is a private residence, you can bunk down in Rip’s or Lee Dutton’s Cabin and soak up those majestic Montana vistas.

(Image: Chavenage House | James Kerr)

07

Rivals

Its setting is inspired by The Cotswolds of the 1980s, but don’t disregard Rivals (Disney+) as a stuffy period drama. Based on the salacious novels by Dame Jilly Cooper, the dramedy revolves around the rich and badly behaved residents of a sleepy English village that is anything but.

Starring Aidan Turner (Poldark) and David Tennant, Rivals was filmed primarily around Gloucestershire and Wiltshire, with Chavenage House in Tetbury, The Cotswolds, a key location. King Charles has been a frequent guest at the real-life home in the past.

As for the interiors? The show’s mostly unscrupulous characters live among a delightful mix of dusty, characterful Victorian grandeur and gaudy 80s decor, with chintzy Laura Ashley textiles, heavy drapes and peach tones galore. This ‘aesthetic’ might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but it’s certainly fun.

(Image: HBO)

08

And Just Like That

In Season 3 of And Just Like That, now dropping weekly on Max, we find Sarah Jessica Parker’s Carrie living alone in an historic New York townhouse, after on-again-off-again boyfriend Aidan moves back to rural Virginia. It’s very white, bright and spacious, yet to be decorated with Carrie’s signature eclectic furnishings, but its original features – such as wainscoting, iron lace work and leadlight windows – give us goosebumps.

Elsewhere in the AJLT-verse, Charlotte’s timeless Park Avenue apartment is a cosy family abode with some midcentury modern additions (a Pierre Jeanneret armchair, for example), while Seema’s Upper East Side penthouse is glamorous and sensual. Lisa’s colourful and palatial walk-in robe-slash-home office has become a veritable character; symbolic of her hectic life as dedicated filmmaker with three kids… and a somewhat needy husband.

(Image: Craig Blankenhorn | Hulu)

09

Only Murders in the Building

The surprising smash-hit Only Murders in the Building (Disney+) wouldn’t be complete without its distinctive set designs. Each apartment featured is meticulously curated to help illustrate the personalities of the show’s key characters: uptight Charles’ (Steve Martin) home is classic and tidy; former theatre director Oliver’s (Martin Short) place is flamboyant, full of Broadway posters and keepsakes; and in Season 1, Mabel (Selena Gomez) is staying in her aunt’s mid-renovation apartment, the construction mess symbolising that she’s in a state of flux.

Later in the series, Meryl Streep joins the cast, with her struggling actress-character residing in a modest and cluttered flat. Regardless of the home, each set on OMITB communicates the same thing: your space often reflects who you are.

(Image: HGTV)

10

Celebrity IOU

Don’t dismiss Celebrity IOU (Max) as just another reno reality show. Helmed by Jonathan and Drew Scott, also known as the ‘Property Brothers’, it draws some seriously A-list celebs, who express gratitude to a person (usually non-famous) who’s impacted their life with a surprise home renovation.

In the latest season, its ninth, Courteney Cox, Goldie Hawn and Rob Lowe are among the celebrities rolling up their sleeves alongside Jonathan and Drew, to transform a detached garage into a Californian-coastal living room, a tired kitchen into a modern terrazzo-rich space and more.

(Image: Marie Etchegoyen / Netflix)

11

Emily in Paris

You mightn’t be able to jet off to Paris on a whim, but you can binge Emily in Paris on Netflix for a dose of French decor. And in Season 4, the most recent, we’re treated to Roman architecture and interiors, too, as Emily (Lily Collins) finds herself working at large for Agence Grateau in Italy.

From her ornate and lofty Parisian office to the cosy and bohemian apartment she shares with Mindy, plus extravagant ball rooms and Gabriel’s chic restaurant, Emily in Paris is a veritable buffet for interior design, well, buffs.

(Image: ABC)

12

Grand Designs

The grand-daddy of renovation reality TV, Grand Designs was launched by Kevin McCloud more than 25 years ago and it changed the way laypeople look at architecture and design. Showcasing ambitious and unique building projects, tackled by visionaries and everyday families – often taking months or years – Grand Designs is inspiring viewing, if not a cautionary tale at times. (Yes, the projects almost always run over budget.)

The Australian Grand Designs (on ABC iView) is hosted by Anthony Burke, as is the 2024 spin-off series, Grand Designs Transformations, also featuring YSG founder and interior designer Yasmine Ghoniem. Burke and Ghoniem visit two properties per episode, such as a French-inspired heritage cottage in Tasmania and a treetop eco-retreat on the Mornington Peninsula. There’s something for everyone in every ep.

(Image: Fabio Lovino | HBO)

13

The White Lotus

Regardless of the season, every hotel interior in The White Lotus (now on Max) is a killer. Season 1 was filmed at the palm-fringed luxury O’ahu resort, The Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea, and embellished by set designers with tropical pink, green and blue furnishings. The dreamy Sicilian clifftop hotel, San Domenico Palace in Taormina, provided the setting for Season 2; its decor sporting a more dusky European palette and classical features.

In the latest instalment of The White Lotus, Season 3, not one but two Thai resorts were utilised: the Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui and Anantara Bophut Koh Samui Resort. With a distinctly Southeast Asian flavour, the jungle-shrouded rooms are peppered with rattan, nature-inspired prints and monkey motifs, pulled together in an elevated fashion fit for the wealthy characters who stay there. We can’t wait to see what Season 4 will look like.

(Image: Mangolia Network)

14

Mini Reni

Since their first renovation TV show Fixer Upper premiered in 2014, Joanna and Chip Gaines have gone from strength to strength, conceiving of new shows (and a fifth child), several lucrative collabs and even a media network. In her new series, Mini Reni, Joanna is returning to her roots to reimagine smaller spaces in her home town of Waco, Texas; this time without Chip on the tools. A far cry from the ambitious ‘Cottonland Castle’ renovation they sweated over in a recent Fixer Upper spin-off.

No doubt the iconic decorator will transform each room with her soulful signature modern farmhouse aesthetic: swathes of olive green, warm timber, house plants and of course, the ubiquitous shiplap. We are here for it.

Making our list of the best TV shows for interior design enthusiasts, Palm Royale is the Emmy-nominated comedy series that explores the opulent country club lifestyle of Palm Beach in the late 1960s. With a star-studded cast including Kristen Wiig, Laura Dern, Allison Janney, Leslie Bibb, Ricky Martin, Josh Lucas, Amber Chardae Robinson, Kaia Gerber, and Carol Burnett; it perfectly captures how secrets, lies, and the occasional felony are buried beneath the dazzling beauty of the late-’60s Palm Beach aesthetic. “There’s a little bit of danger behind this beautiful facade,” says Abe Sylvia, the writer, executive producer, and showrunner.

With season 2 of Palm Royale premiering tonight, we dive into the interiors, set design and iconic characters that instantly transport us to the late 1960s.

Palm Royale Season 1
Image: Apple TV

Drawing heavy inspiration from the works of Slim Aarons, the photographer renowned for capturing never-before-seen lives of celebrities and socialites in their holiday homes and at Beverly Hills afterparties, the series is a pastiche that honours “the last American sanctuary,” as Allison Janney’s character, the queen bee Evelyn puts it.

Unfolding alongside, yet detached from, the cultural and societal shifts seen in the late 1960s, from the dawn of class consciousness, counterculture, women’s liberation and a growing emphasis on individuality, as well as the post-war prosperity and baby boom, the Palm Beach-bubble that our characters exist within was seen as a glamorous enclave, a covert, high society tooth-and-nail battle for status and power as the wider world shifted toward individuality, liberation, and social change.

Palm Royale Season 1
Image: Apple TV

“For years, I wanted to set a show in the world of Slim Aarons photography,” said Abe Sylvia to House Beautiful. “There’s no sense of the outside world in them.”

Palm Royale Season 1
Image: Apple TV

The clothing choices reflect this period of significant ideological change, too. “The ’60s brought about so much innovation,” costume designer Alix Friedberg told Who What Wear. “It was like all of the shackles of post-war fashion came off.”

“The ’60s really was an explosion [of fashion]; it was totally theatrical.”

Palm Royale Season 1
Image: Apple TV

A Palm Beach aesthetic in sunny LA

While the book was set in Palm Springs in California, the show was changed to be set in Florida’s Palm Beach, the more prosperous and pedigreed of the two iconic styles. But, it was filmed mostly in Los Angeles, which meant the majority of the sets were custom-built and decorated by set decorator Ellen Reede and her team. It was made to appear as though a Slim Aarons photography book came to life, the transportive sets and the fabulous costuming presenting sun-soaked postcards of Palm Beach.

Palm Royale Season 1
Image: Apple TV

An eye-catching and vibrant colour palette with sleek lines and luxurious furnishings, Palm Royale‘s interiors embody Mid-Century Modern meets quintessential American extravagance. Opulent features, like Norma Dellacorte’s glimmering crystal chandeliers, remind you of the grandeur of the time.

And there’s a reason the fashion and decor in Palm Royale feel so true-to-life. Plenty of the interiors were reportedly real antiques sourced from estate sales and thift stores, with some even sourced from a sale at the late actress Yvette Mimieux and her businessman husband Howard Ruby’s Bel Air compound. And the fashion too: at least 60% of the garments were actual vintage pieces, costume designer Alix Friedberg says.

Is Black Friday a good time to buy a vacuum?

Black Friday is the best time to buy a vacuum as brands and retailers in the appliance space almost always participate. Vacuum brands and products tend to fluctuate regularly throughout the year, however Black Friday, and the month of November in general, is when we tend to see the biggest price drops.

Which vacuum cleaner should I buy?

The vacuum cleaner category has boomed in recent years, advancing from cordless stick vacuum cleaners to robotic vacuums, vacuum mops, and even integrated AI technology. If you’re planning to buy a vacuum cleaner during Black Friday sales, make sure you choose one based on the type of flooring in your home, your budget, and the size of your home. Upright vacuum cleaners are effective for deep-cleaning carpets, while stick or cordless models offer convenience and are lightweight, making them ideal for quick cleanups. For those who are constantly on the go, a robot vacuum might be your best bet. Make sure you take into account features such as filtration systems, battery life, noise level, and attachments to ensure you select a vacuum cleaner that matches your lifestyle.

What is the best vacuum cleaner to buy in Australia?

Leading brands such as Dyson, Miele, and Shark consistently earn high marks for reliability, innovative features, and overall cleaning performance, and often slash their prices during Black Friday vacuum sales. Keep your eye on features such as suction power, automation and attachments as stated above to ensure you purchase the perfect vacuum for your home.

When do Black Friday vacuum sales start?

Black Friday vacuum sales for 2025 have already started, despite Black Friday taking place on November 28, with Cyber Monday following on December 1. Many retailers like to lean into the shopping fun for the month by dropping early deals as soon as November 1, with brands such as Dyson, Shark and Tineco already taking the lead.

Opening on 13 November at TheEND’s idyllic Paddington showroom, Objects of Intention is the inaugural instalment of the Australian lifestyle brand‘s In Residence series. Running for four days only, the exhibition sees TheEND collaborate with contemporary fashion label ESSE Studios to conceive a liveable gallery where a melange of furniture, clothing and objects are displayed together.

At the centre of the project, founders James Maroun of TheEND and Charlotte Hicks of ESSE Studios advocate for fastidious practices that celebrate enduring design and the importance of tactile materials. The collaboration presents an environment where materials and processes coexist – a setting that reflects both brands’ belief in design as a form of self-expression. “Our interior environment is an extension of who we are, just as what we wear reflects how we live,” says Maroun.

Objects of Intention explores the intersection between interior design and fashion. Both fields are converging, and this collaboration reflects a mutual commitment to craftsmanship, longevity and considered design. Within the space, TheEND’s handcrafted objects, carved using traditional techniques, sit beside ESSE Studios’ seasonless eveningwear.

Britt and Taz won the 2025 season, walking away with an astonishing $520,000 in prize money and profit, but after placing an anonymous $3,410,000 bid on the property, it seems the new owners are looking to cash in too. Revealing to the Herald Sun, the new owners are planning to use the winning Block home as an Airbnb from January next year.

“From the early new year, you will be able to have a weekend up there,” says The Block auctioneer Mark Nunn. “It will be popular too.”

Big Brother Australia has been revived by Channel 10, bringing the return of the iconic neon set to its original home: Dreamworld Studios on the Gold Coast. The 2025 season is hosted by Mel Tracina – who you may know from her days on the comedy panel show, The Cheap Seats or as a National Radio Host on Nova – and is narrated by the iconic voice of Big Brother: Mike Goldman. Former host Sonia Kruger has stepped back from the role due to her affiliation with Channel Seven.

“The Big Brother house is synonymous with Dreamworld, so bringing the OG format to its OG location feels right,” says host, Mel Tracina. “We’re excited to be home (and in a new house that hopefully comes with an air fryer!)”

Where is the Big Brother house?

The Big Brother house is located at Dreamworld on the Gold Coast in Queensland. It was completely rebuilt for the 2025 season on a soundstage in the Dreamworld Exhibition Centre located in the Winterfest Ice Skating Rink. The live eviction and show stage will also be held inside Dreamworld, in the space that was once the Troll’s Village.

Contestants will be able to hear the screams from nearby ride-goers, and vice-versa, theme park visitors can also hear the contestants (although let’s hope they won’t be screaming too). “There will be some noise spill. It’s in the heart of Dreamworld,” says Executive Producer Sarah Thornton. “People who come to Dreamworld can see, touch, feel, Big Brother.”

It was completely rebuilt and given a fresh makeover for the 2025 season, while still keeping some of the iconic Big Brother elements. “With a brand-new house built on familiar ground, this season will be centred on real people with real stories, talking in real time,” Daniel Monaghan Paramount Australia’s SVP of Content and Programming.

The interiors are described as “Gold Coast meets Miami” – where bright colours, retro decor, playful shapes and soft curves take centre-stage. Describing the design brief, producers say they wanted a “house fit for reality [TV], but also one you’d actually want to live in.”

Featuring bright pinks, blues, the iconic diary room (naturally), palm trees, a plunge pool, plenty of neon and LED lights, and over 100 cameras remotely filming the contestants’ every move (yes, even in the bathroom and toilets), the kooky house is sure to elicit some kooky behaviour.

What channel owns Big Brother?

The show made a splash on Network 10 from the Dreamworld location following the 2001 premiere, which ran for eight seasons before it was canned in 2008. The Nine Network then picked up the show for three seasons from 2012 to 2015 before shutting down production once again. In 2019, the Seven Network attemped to revive the format, putting in four seasons between 2020 and 2023, before handballing it back the original station, Network 10, to breathe new life into in 2025.

During this two decade-long game of hot potato, The Big Brother house was devastated by a dramatic fire, which completely gutted the original set of the reality show. It was alleged that a group of children set the blaze, of whom four were charged with arson.

Following the fire, the set was completely rebuilt, and what an iconic set it has become.

Unlike other reality shows, where contestants famously complain about getting a “bad edit”, Big Brother is filmed and aired live – you can tune in to what the contestants are up to at any point via the live stream on 10Play.

Big Brother Australia premiered on Sunday 9th of November and will continue until December 2025. It will air from Monday to Friday at 7.30pm and Sundays at 7.00pm on Channel 10 and 10Play.

With its iconic storyline – Kate Winslet and Cameron Diaz’s characters swap homes, with Iris (Winslet) staying in Amanda’s (Diaz) Los Angeles house and Amanda relocating to Iris’s cottage in Surrey – The Holiday has solidified itself as a Christmas classic. While it may be disappointing for admirers of the 2006 romantic comedy to hear that the provincial cottage from the movie was a temporary film set, one property in Georgia has brought the paradisical storybook fantasy to life. Painstakingly emulated to match the film’s charming stone exterior and fastidious interiors, the holiday rental adopts the essence of the English country cottage, offering visitors the chance to experience it firsthand.

Inside The Holiday cottage replica

Set among rolling hills in north Georgia, the cottage mirrors the idyllic setting of the film’s fictional Rosehill Village. The replica has been constructed by Lucy Small of State and Season Home Design and Supply and is welcoming guests as a holiday rental in Ellijay, Georgia, approximately one hour from Atlanta. Plucked from the bucolic foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, the two-storey property sits on more than six acres and substitutes the film’s English countryside setting for mountain views.

According to official materials, the house layout closely follows the fictional design from the film. The interior comprises a living room with stone walls, exposed beams and a wood-burning fireplace; a kitchen with blue shaker-style cabinetry and a second fireplace; two upstairs bedrooms, each with a king bed and en suite bathroom; a queen sofa bed downstairs; and a primary bedroom with vaulted ceilings and a king bed. The bathroom replicates the small tub featured in the movie, adapted for comfort. Outdoor features include a patio with a fire pit and a year-round hot tub.

The cottage also provides access to nearby attractions. Ellijay is known as Georgia’s “Apple Capital,” with orchards to explore, as well as scenic hikes such as the Amicalola Falls Trail. The region is home to wine destinations including sparkling offerings at Wolf Mountain Vineyards and French-inspired whites and reds at Frogtown Cellars.

Booking the stay

The property began hosting guests on October 1 and remains available for November and early 2026, in time for the peak holiday season. The holiday rental offers the rare chance to live out a beloved film moment in comfort, whether escaping for a quiet weekend or planning a festive getaway, adopting the fastidious charm that made The Holiday a seasonal classic.

5 things you absolutely shouldn’t do to your home during Mercury retrograde https://www.homestolove.com.au/lifestyle/organising/mercury-retrograde-what-to-do-at-home/ Sat, 08 Nov 2025 06:30:01 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/?p=1294325 The cosmic home survival guide you didn't know you needed

The post 5 things you absolutely shouldn’t do to your home during Mercury retrograde appeared first on Homes To Love.

]]>
The final Mercury retrograde of 2025, which begins on November 9 and rolls through to November 29, is back – and it’s coming for your home.

If your appliances have suddenly developed a mind of their own or your renovation timeline has gone completely haywire, you might be tempted to blame Mercury. And honestly? You wouldn’t be wrong for doing so. But that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s time to panic. Despite the chaotic connotations, it’s also a powerful opportunity to reflect, refocus and reconnect with that endless to-do list.

From renovation mix-ups to missing deliveries, here’s what not to do until the stars settle, plus, the easy tweaks you should be making.

Jump to category:

What happens to your home during Mercury retrograde?

What not to do during Mercury retrograde

What you should do when Mercury is in retrograde

What does Mercury retrograde mean?

Mercury planet

Three to four times a year, the planet of communication, travel and technology appears to move backwards in the sky – a cosmic illusion known as Mercury retrograde.

“As it rounds the bend, Mercury slows down and appears to stop (station) and spin backward (retrograde),” explain The Astrotwins. “Of course, it really isn’t moving backward, but much like two trains or cars passing each other, this creates the optical illusion that one (Mercury, in this case) is going backward.” And while some might roll their eyes, there’s a reason this period has a reputation for domestic disruption.

Mercury rules coordination, data, contracts and planning – which also happen to be the cornerstones of home life. Astrologers say it’s a time when plans unravel, details get missed and confusion overtakes calm. Whether you believe in the stars or simply enjoy a bit of celestial scapegoating, there’s no denying that homes tend to feel the chaos, too.

After all, ’tis the season when even the best-laid home plans, from contracts to decor choices, can go sideways. So if you’ve been thinking of repainting your house or signing off on a renovation, pause right there. Here’s exactly what to avoid and what to prioritise to keep mishaps to a minimum while Mercury is in retrograde.

What happens to your home during Mercury Retrograde?

(Credit: Photography: Dave Wheeler)

Astrologically speaking, Mercury’s backspin disrupts clarity and communication – the same energy that governs emails, deliveries, trades, and even your Wi-Fi. So, when the planet slows down, you might notice everyday systems in your home follow suit. Think:

 • Appliances breaking down without warning
 • Deliveries lost in transit
 • Miscommunication with trades or contractors
 • General restlessness with your surroundings

It’s not your imagination, or your interior design taste changing overnight. It’s simply the universe urging you to slow down, double-check, and resist impulsive moves

What not to do during Mercury Retrograde

A green sitting room with statement armchairs
(Photography: Jack Lovel)

Let’s start with the no-go zone. If Mercury is in retrograde, resist the urge to start anything new or large in scale. Avoid rushing big changes, focus on maintenance, and embrace the chance to reconnect with your home on a smaller, more meaningful level.

1. Don’t start big renovations

Communication errors are the hallmark of retrograde periods, which makes this period the worst time to commit to building works, extensions or large-scale projects. If it’s urgent, then remember to triple-check the fine print, confirm timelines in writing and build in extra time for inevitable delays.

2. Avoid major purchases

Large purchases, especially tech-heavy appliances or made-to-order furniture, are best avoided until Mercury goes direct. Returns can be tricky, warranties get misplaced and you may change your mind once the retrograde fog lifts.

3. Hold off on moving house

Leases, contracts and conveyancing rely on clear communication and precise execution – exactly what Mercury retrograde tends to scramble. Unless it’s absolutely necessary, try to delay signing any paperwork, or finalising a move until the retrograde comes to an end.

4. Don’t rush design decisions

If you’ve suddenly been hit with the urge to paint your entire house green, however much these projects might tempt you, give it a couple of weeks before taking the plunge. You might feel less attached to the idea once Mercury resets its path forward. Instead, stick to small, reversible home improvement updates for now.

What you should do during Mercury retrograde

(Credit: Photography: Nikole Ramsay)

This disruptive time can be seen as a cosmic stop sign, but it should also be treated as a sign to slow down. You can still do plenty around the house – albeit with a bit more focus.

1. Declutter and deep clean

Clearing out clutter aligns perfectly with Mercury’s introspective energy. Now’s the perfect time to tackle those overstuffed drawers, reorganise your pantry or finally get to deep clean the rooms you’ve been putting off for months. Not only will you lighten your space, but you’ll clear your mind in the process.

2. Finish half-done projects

Half-hung picture frames? Unfinished DIY jobs? Sure, now might not be the optimal time to start something new, but that’s not the case for those forgotten projects. Afterall, Mercury retrograde is all about renewing and reviewing – especially when it comes to easy design updates that may have taken a back seat.

3. Mercury-proof your tech

Because Mercury also rules the transfer of information, it’s important to mitigate any potential effects of the signal-jamming cycle. Back up your digital data or sensitive information such as photos, files and even passwords and keep spares of chargers and bulbs. Small steps now, like servicing the washing machine and checking smoke alarms, can prevent bigger headaches later. If Mercury’s going to meddle, at least you’ll be ready.

4. Refresh your energy

Introduce plants, open the windows, swap your lighting or burn your favourite candle. Little changes like swapping out your cushions and changing your bedding can do wonders for your mood, and they’re risk-free. These low-commitment tweaks satisfy the urge to change things up without risking regret later.

When the retrograde ends, you’ll likely feel the fog lift. That’s when it’s safe to revisit the projects you put on hold, with a clearer head and sharper focus. Recheck your contracts, confirm budgets, and only move forward on what still feels right.

The good news? Anything you start once Mercury goes direct is likely to flow more smoothly — and with fewer cosmic interruptions.

If you find yourself more obsessed with the filming location of The Golden Bachelor Australia than the budding onscreen romances, we don’t blame you. The franchise is famous for its stunning backdrops, from sandstone mansions around Sydney, from the North Shore to the Northern Beaches and Glenorie, but it’s the mystery mansion from the most recent season of The Golden Bachelor that’s capturing everyone’s attention.

The first in its ‘Golden’ era, the series offshoot where all of the contestants are over age-50, the glamorous sandstone waterfront home is certainly befitting of its luxurious name. To find out where The Golden Bachelor Australia is filmed, and who owns the grand estate, read on.

The Golden Bachelor was filmed at Tresco in Elizabeth Bay

Where is The Golden Bachelor filmed?

A stately heritage home located at 97 Elizabeth Bay Road, Elizabeth Bay, Tresco has been called the most distinguished waterfront estate in Australasia. It was designed by leading architect Thomas Rowe back in 1868 to 1883 and today sits on 3600 square-metres of prime Sydney waterfront land. It offers breathtaking northerly harbour views, magnificent formal entertaining rooms, seven luxurious bedrooms, a private ocean pool, two jetties, a 1000-bottle cellar and separate maid quarters.

Owned by Australian racing royalty, the Waterhouse family, the 150-year-old property is currently under the ownership of Janette Waterhouse, the former wife of David Waterhouse (who is the son of the late Bill Waterhouse: businessman, barrister, and one of the biggest bookmakers in the world). Janette and David purchased Tresco in 2004 for $11 million, and attempted to find a buyer in 2024, listing it for $120 million. It failed to sell at the time, but the family is reportedly still looking for a buyer.

Frequented by high society, and once visited by Prince Philip as the Guest of Honour at the Royal Australian Navy’s 75th birthday celebration, the Victorian manor must have plenty of stories to tell.

Tresco is available to book for private events via the luxury property rental platfrom, Villa Getaways. Well, when The Golden Bachelor has finished filming, that is!

What is the best time of year to go to Byron Bay?

As always, the best time to visit anywhere depends on your preference. If you’re searching for a beach holiday with plenty of sun, sand and surf, the summer months (December-February) will be the perfect time – but be prepared for bigger crowds and higher prices. For those who prefer coastal walks, weekend markets and cosy nights in – and don’t mind the cool sea breeze – winter (June-August) is the off-season and will still have everything you’re looking for. If you’re looking to dodge the crowds, Autumn (March-May) is a more quiet time to visit, but Spring (September-November) offers the balance of warmer weather and smaller crowds with the added bonus of coinciding with the whale watching season.

Is it worth staying in Byron Bay?

Byron Bay is a beautiful region and one of Australia’s most famous beach towns – for good reason! It has a plethora of luxurious and unique accommodation options, stunning beaches, parks and coastal walks, boutique shopping, renowned dining destinations, and wellness centres on nearly every corner, but that’s not to say the surrounding regions should be forgotten. Bangalow (Byron’s slightly more under-the-radar sibling), Brunswick Heads, Mullumbimby, Ballina, Yamba and Lennox Heads are just a few of the nearby must-visit spots. From laid-back vibes to beautiful beaches, Byron’s surrounding areas have plenty to offer.

How many days in Byron Bay is enough?

Byron Bay is only small, but there’s surprises around every corner. To get the fully zen, Byron experience, you’ll want to do as the locals do and take it slow. There’s no such thing as rushing in Byron. Aim for at least three days if you’re pressed for time, but ideally five days are needed to fully appreciate the slower pace of life. If you have a car and can visit the surrounding areas like Bangalow and Mullumbimby, you’ll want to stay an additional few days.

Can you get around Byron Bay without a car?

Yes, you can easily get around Byron Bay without a car! The town centre is small, compact, and incredibly walkable. For longer visits you might look into bike-riding as a means of transportation, considering popular spots like The Farm are only a 20 minute ride away. There are also plenty of shuttle buses and local buses, and, of course, taxis and Ubers are readily available.

What to consider when choosing the best vacuum cleaner for your home

Style
Each style of vacuum cleaner has its pros and cons, so it’s important to consider which factors you’d like to prioritise. For example, is convenience or battery power the most important factor for you?

Floor type
While many vacuums come with an array of additional attachments to allow you to vacuum efficiently on all surfaces and even help reach into the farthest nooks and crannies, some models do not. A vacuum designed for carpet is very different from one that’s optimised for floorboards.

Battery power
Mainly a problem for cordless and robot vacuums — consider the size of your home and how much runtime you will need. Many stick vacuums allow you to purchase an additional battery to help extend your runtime as needed.

Suction power
Not all vacuums suck equally. In addition to looking at the suction force (check the air wattage — 100AW is a good place to start!), you’ll want to examine the filtration system in your vacuum. An easily clogged filter will have a dramatic impact on your vacuum’s suction power throughout its runtime.

Cleaning factor
How easy is your vacuum to empty and clean? Many robot vacuums can self-empty and clean, while corded vacuums with bags ensure all of your dirt and dust stays confined during the disposal process.

Different types of vacuum cleaners and the benefits and downsides of each

Stick and handheld vacuums

The biggest trend in floor care is undoubtedly the newer lightweight stick/handheld cleaners. Stick vacuum cleaners have rapidly improved in both suction and battery life, and usually come with an assortment of attachments that make them a truly viable option for all homes and their surfaces.

In the past, one of the major downsides of cordless vacuums has been their smaller battery and need for regular recharging. Newer models allow for quick-swapping with additional batteries, allowing you to instantly extend your runtime. Some models, like the Dyson Outsize, also come with significantly larger cleaner heads to help make cleaning bigger spaces more efficient.

Suction strength and hardy filters have also become a mainstay in the category. Heavy-duty filtration systems are designed to ensure your vacuum can clean the most minuscule particles without affecting the suction quality of your device. Samsung’s JetStick vacuum, for example, offers an advanced 5-layer dust filtration system, which is ideal for minimising allergens in the home.

But, it’s worth noting that sticks are not always great for carpeted areas, especially those with a shag finish. And, depending on the size of your home, they still might not be ideal if you like to do all the vacuuming at once.

However, they are a fantastic option for people who tend to clean in short, sharp bursts or do quick touch-ups every day or so. Their compact nature also makes them easy to store — especially in smaller homes and apartments.

When you only want or need to do a bit here and there, you can’t beat a hands-on option.

Canister vacuums

It may come as a surprise, but people are still comfortable with using canister vacuums, says Colin. “Their compartments are typically larger and the perception is that, as they are powered directly from an outlet, they are more powerful than the cordless options. With a canister, you also don’t have to worry about running out of charge,” he explains.

A leader in this category is Miele, and Robin Werth, head of category management and marketing, of Miele Australia and New Zealand, believes canister vacuum cleaners offer the ideal solution for a more powerful, deep clean.

Robin is an advocate for bagged vacuum cleaners, and Miele has no intention of phasing them out. “Bagged vacuum cleaners remain Miele’s best sellers and the category continues to grow due to popularity,” he says. “Key reasons include hygienic dust disposal and cleanliness, along with convenience and no need for maintenance.”

It’s worth noting that allergy sufferers usually prefer bagged cleaners because they contain indoor allergens and dust better.

Packed with power, the classic style is still your go-to for getting the job done on all floor types.

Robot vacuums

Ideal for homes with hard surfaces such as timber or tiles, robot vacuum cleaners take most of the work out of keeping your floor clean. Not only will they work while you’re out of the house, but they’re also smart enough to return to their hubs whenever they need recharging.

“Not long ago, robotic vacuums were synonymous with being more of a nuisance than they were helpful as they lacked intelligence and adequate navigation abilities,” says Karen Powell, Head of Ecovacs Robotics for Australia and New Zealand. “New technology coupled with the ability for them to compete with more traditional vacuums in terms of suction power, proves that robotic vacuums are now no longer a gimmick but genuinely helpful home essentials adding a plethora of functional benefits in our homes.”

“Robot vacuums are proving a popular solution for the time-poor people, removing the grunt work associated with vacuuming,” says Colin. “Some models will manoeuvre around your furniture and will know to put the brakes on at the top of your stairs. If this convenience isn’t enough, you can even control some of these vacuums using an app on your smartphone or tablet.”

The navigational technology of robot vacuums continues to improve in leaps and bounds, and some models like the Ecovacs’ OZMO range are hybrid models – meaning that they can mop, sweep and vacuum your floor, which can be extra handy for those with timber or tiled floors.

Why apply all that elbow grease when a new machine can do it for you – and never complain!

New vacuum technology

In addition to improved suction and convenience, many vacuums have sought to move ahead of the pack with even more technological advancements. When considering which vacuum cleaner is the best for you, we’d recommend considering which factors will help make your life and cleaning process easier. Here are some of our favourite new features…

Robot vacuums, of course, have in-built mapping and object detection and this technology continues to get more and more sophisticated. But newer models like EcoVacs Robotic‘s DEEBOT T9+ take their vacuum design to the next level with the addition of an integrated air freshener along with their mopping and vacuuming capabilities.

There’s nothing worse than emptying your vacuum cleaner’s dustbin and finding a mushroom cloud’s worth of dust spilling back into the air. Samsung’s Jet Stick Vacuum pairs beautifully with the Samsung Clean Station, which automatically cleans the dustbin and boasts an ultrafine filter that ensures allergens and dust don’t get released back into the home.

Dyson’s Dyson Detect V15 features a handy particle counter on its LCD scree,n which acoustically senses the size and number of particles you vacuum to instantly highlight when a vacuumed area is truly clean. A built-in laser in the fluffy cleaner head also illuminates dust particles on the ground to help make cleaning easier.

What is the number 1 rated best vacuum cleaner in Australia?

As we said, choosing the right vacuum cleaner comes down to your set of preferences. It’s a subjective choice! You may require something corded with more powerful suction to deal with your cat’s hair, while your friend may prefer to do quick whip-arounds with something lightweight. On our list, the highest rated vacuum cleaner is Shark’s corded upright vacuum with self-cleaning brushroll.

What are the top 3 cordless vacuum cleaners?

Although many opt for the high-suction power of a traditional corded vacuum, there is a lot to be said for cordless vacuum cleaners. Easy and lightweight, stick/cordless vacuum cleaners allow users to do quick daily whip-arounds instead of having to lug out a heavier model.

We’ve researched the best cordless vacuum cleaners on the market, and found the top picks based on features like HEPA filtration, self-cleaning brushes, and lightweight design.

Connecting rooms are styled so her customers get a true sense of what her pieces can feel like in their own homes. “One room may feel like the Hamptons, one more coastal,” Suzie tells us. “There’s a bedroom, a bathroom, a man’s domain, an old French atelier, country kitchen, dining room, garden room and a rug room.”

If you think, from this description, her collection sounds prolific, you’re not mistaken. Suzie’s interior decorator’s eye for homewares, furniture and one-off European antiques, along with her signature palette of neutral tones, can be credited for breathing fresh life into Moss Vale’s main street. Suzie Anderson Home also has a store in Bowral.

Merchant Campbell

She places emphasis on handmade, one-of-a-kind jewellery, homewares, artwork, rugs and more.

Sainte

Berry, South Coast

The facade of Sainte (formerly Amara Home) in the quaint village of Berry on the NSW South Coast is like something from a fairytale. It’s covered in creeping ivy that shrouds the blacksmith and farrier sign from days gone by. Inside, you’ll find a dreamy selection of interiors and high-end fashion in neutral colours.

One-off furniture and decorative pieces, sourced from as far as Africa, India and Morocco, sit comfortably among luxury clothing and accessories by Celine, Annie Bing, Jac and Jack, Lucy Folk, and Bemboka. Be sure to seek out knives by Poglia, The Laundress’ genius collaboration with Le Labo, and Jérôme Dreyfuss’s buttery soft leather bags.

Walgett, Northern NSW

There’s a mass of greenery at the entrance to Stone’s Throw on Walgett’s main street, hanging from planters and wheeled onto the pavement in vintage European market carts. The café and shop, owned by Katie Murray and her husband Jay, has been credited with keeping community spirits up in the drought-affected area. With its huge bi-fold windows and brilliant sage-green subway tiles, it’s little wonder locals and visitors flock to the old bank building to catch up, enjoy great coffee and browse Katie’s thoughtful collection of homewares and gifts. There are also gourmet pantry items, kitchen and garden accessories, fun tea towels, aprons and calendars by Red Tractor Designs.

Pony

Charleston, Adelaide Hills

Owner Nicki Milton fondly describes her Adelaide Hills store as an old barn in a paddock. Upon opening the shop nearly 10 years ago, Nicki gave the building a facelift, complete with chic awnings bearing the Pony logo. As a result, passers-by, often travelling between the Barossa and the coast, stop and take notice. They love Pony’s practical and colourful range of homewares, Indigenous art and women’s fashion, plus special pieces sourced from Israel, Italy, Germany and Denmark. Inside, you can see why the expansive area is often described as gallery-like, which only serves to encourage Nicki and her inner stylist. “It’s a big space, and merchandising is what gets me excited. I like to create stories with the products, making it an experience to walk your way through Pony,” she says.

Speckled Hen Store

Kersbrook, Adelaide Hills

Nestled in the Adelaide Hills, this delightful little shop is brimming with colourful homewares. There’s a focus on farmhouse-inspired kitchenware, garden tools, picnic products and doorstops, along with farm animal toys and books for children. Butter dishes, eggcups, sugar bowls and toast racks from Cooksmart England bring cheer, as do the oversized mugs, illustrated with chickens, from the Robert Gordon Australia x Emogen Clark collection. The vibe is joyful, with hand-carved wooden ducks and resin roosters all around, but it’s clear owners Anne-Marie and Caitlin Stringer, a mother-daughter duo, have a serious instinct for great gifting. They know the benefit of offering customers delivery and click-and-collect. All orders, both online and in-store, come beautifully wrapped – and if you’re not in South Australia, the online experience is clear and comprehensive.

The Captains Mrs

St Helens

To many readers of Country Style, Amanda Skipper needs no introduction. After closing her glorious interiors store, The Vintage Rose, in 2020 and restoring whalers’ inn The Black Swan with her husband, Skip, she’s thrown open the doors to a fresh endeavour – The Captains Mrs. Inspired by the pristine beaches and bays of St Helens, the shop has a distinctly coastal feel, with Amanda’s trademark flair for combining old with new on display. Rustic ceramics, timber breadboards, emerald glassware and French-style cutlery sit artfully among giant clam shells, vintage taxidermy shore birds and feather-filled cushions. “There’s beautiful rattan and jute, hand-loomed linens, soft mossy greens and tranquil blues… all reminiscent of my natural surrounds every day,” says Amanda. On the eve of the shop’s opening,
Amanda tells me Christmas plans are firmly underway (fittingly, with half the products stowed away and the other on a ship, ready to arrive). She shares visions of a handpainted iron children’s bed surrounded by presents, a real tree adorned with woven snowflakes, and burnished copper and brass bells. In any case, a journey to see The Captains Mrs in her first festive season is sure to be a treat.

Gypsy and the Bowerbird

Mackay, North Queensland

When mother-daughter team Melanie Walker and Aimee Lacy took the reins of this beloved shop in Mackay last year, they brought with them their passion for intentional living and slow rituals. “It’s a calm, soulful space,” says Aimee of the store, adding they wanted to create a retreat for visitors that felt “less like shopping, more like lingering and finding meaningful pieces.” Ceramics in earthy tones line the shelves, with hand-poured candles, incense and body oils. Textiles from Mediterranean-inspired Saardé, bohemian-style picnic rugs from Wandering Folk and Gentle Habits’ roll-on perfume oils all make nurturing presents. Encouraging us to give as an act of love at Christmas, rather than a rush or obligation, Melanie and Aimee have created thoughtful gift bundles, including tableware and wellness sets. Bridgetown

This eclectic emporium, housed in a historic building on Bridgetown’s main street, is turning 21 this Christmas. Vanessa Brogan co-owns the business (with her husband Rob), running it alongside manager Karli and 12 staff. Vanessa attributes the store’s staying power to her loyal customers (as well as daytrippers from Bunbury and Busselton), plus her carefully selected product range. The team recently opened a cafe within the shop – a clever idea, as there’s lots to look at. Tableware and teacups are stacked in many colours, and divine body products, by brands such as Salus and Saya, are plentiful. There are sandals, sneakers, sunglasses and even Levi’s jeans to try on. Vanessa says clothing from Melbourne’s Elk and Byron Bay’s Auguste The Label are popular, along with the shop’s in-house brand, Barney & Fleur. Shelves packed with cookbooks and gourmet groceries, including Love Tea boxes and Fancy Hank’s mayos, mean there’s something special for everyone on your Christmas gift list.

Today, with shops in Canberra, Bowral and Orange, Saskia shares her knowledge of classic toys with children all over Australia. But it’s at Christmas time, she says, that the stores truly come to life: “The shelves sparkle with festive treasures, from traditional stockings filled with little surprises, to retro toys and puzzles that bring families together.” Nostalgic tin spinning tops, wind-up robots, wooden trapeze toys and the prettiest paper dolls sit beside enchanting handcrafted music boxes – it’s a refreshing throwback to clever, well-made pieces. The post Nipa Doshi’s NGV installation is a personal tribute to women in design appeared first on Homes To Love.

Creating a work for the National Gallery of Victoria’s annual collaboration with Mecca celebrating women in design was an unexpectedly transformative process for Nipa Doshi. “It came at just the right time for me,” says the East London-based, Mumbai-born designer who, with partner Jonathan Levien, opened award-winning design studio Doshi Levien in 2000. “I wanted to do work that embodied my values as a human being and as a woman. When you’re working in a very Eurocentric, masculine design environment, there isn’t always room to express women’s histories and stories.”

That’s just what she did with A Room of My Own, her work for the Mecca x NGV Women in Design Commission, currently on display at the NGV. Functioning as both a dressing table and a kind of shrine, it’s a cabinet in wood, lacquer and glass that opens to reveal a mirror on one side, and Doshi’s own abstract paintings of women who’ve inspired her on the other. “It was a commission very focused on women and the voices of women, so I wanted to create something very personal,” Doshi explains. “I saw it as an opportunity to be maximum me. And I wanted to tell a story rooted in my memories of all the women in my life, and the rituals I grew up with.”

The artist with Le Cabinet, inspired by Le Corbusier. (Photography: Philip Sinden)

Those women include her mother’s friends and relatives, who gathered every afternoon to talk about their lives and support each other; her aunt Maya, who not only ran a textile workshop that supplied houses including Issey Miyake and Hermès, but also founded two NGOs supporting women, all while working as a chartered accountant; Nina, an architect friend who supported Doshi during a stay in hospital; Zeenat Aman, a convention-defying 1970s Bollywood actress; and finally, a self-portrait. “It’s a first for me that my paintings are part of a collection – I’m hugely honoured,” says Doshi, whose daily drawing practice serves as meditation, as visual research and as a problem-solving process. “It’s a pivotal moment for me as a person, this commission. I feel emboldened and I feel fearless.”

Despite the confidence the commission has given her, Doshi is careful to credit others. “My partner, Jonathan, was very much part of the cabinet’s development,” she says. “He was a collaborator, especially when it came to resolving the aesthetic and technical details.” The pair mixed the coloured lacquers in their colour library, while the cabinet itself was made in France by Atelier Helbecque. That assistance isn’t always an unmixed blessing, however. “Often I’m written out of books about women and design because I work with a man, so I appreciate this support and encouragement to say, ‘This is my voice and I want to use it.’”

That encouragement also enabled her to lean into beauty for this commission: beauty in the diversity of her inspirations; beauty as an attribute of the object itself; and beauty as one of its functions. “The cabinet is multifaceted, like women,” explains Doshi. “It’s a shrine and it’s a dressing table – to look after your body, and celebrate the ritual of getting ready, is important.” This conflation of beauty with spirituality was a deliberate move on Doshi’s part: “Beauty is highly underrated and dismissed in design because it is considered to be feminine and decorative and superficial, but I think that beauty is an inherent human need.”

Beauty emporium Mecca, whose M-POWER grant program supported this commission, would doubtless agree. And so will delighted gallery-goers, who get to experience not only this exhibition, but also the initiative’s longer-term legacy of supporting women in design.
