Stepping into a day spa is undoubtedly one of the most relaxing experiences. But booking and travelling to and from the experience takes some of the peacefulness out of it all. Thankfully, your once purely practical bathroom can now double as a serene spa-like sanctuary.

Transforming your bathroom from practical to zen doesn’t need to come with a hefty price tag. Of course, you can definitely do the calculations on a full bathroom renovation, but to create a spa-like atmosphere, all you need is a few handy tips and a clear vision.

With plenty of inspiration for said aesthetic vision on hand, all that’s left to do is to carry out those tips and get ready to enjoy the ultimate unwind in your serene space.

How to create a spa-like bathroom:

De-clutter the space

No matter how hard you try, you’re just never going to be able to feel relaxed in a cluttered space. So, gather all the products cluttering your vanity and pack them in neat, easy-to-use, acrylic bathroom storage containers, making sure to find a new home for them tucked away in a drawer or cupboard.

Add to the spa-like aesthetic by incorporating textured pieces in neutral colours, such as a wicker basket, perfect for any leftover storage needs. Most importantly, if your laundry hamper lives in the bathroom, you’ll want to continue the calming aesthetic theme by choosing a fitting hamper. Then, be sure to encourage your family to actually use the hamper so as not to dampen your zen experience.

Curate your countertop

spa like bathroom countertop

Once all the clutter is packed away, you’re left with a blank canvas. To create a relaxing atmosphere, choose design elements that feature organic shapes as well as aesthetic textures and tones.

Pair your neutral bathroom accessories, such as a soap dispenser (filled with a delightfully scented wash, of course), with a textural vase filled with aromatic, dried eucalyptus for that touch of calming green.

If you’ve run out of bench space before you’ve finished curating the perfect counter, then adding a functional yet aesthetic bathroom trolley will create more space to play with, all while being an ideal spot to store those wicker baskets.

Create a spa-like atmosphere

Here’s where the true ‘spa-at-home’ vibe can shine through. Once the space has been curated to reflect your perfect spa day, you’ll finally be able to enjoy your hard work by relaxing. Put the worn bath towels in the laundry and lay out a fresh, new, lush bathmat as your finishing touches, before you don your comfy, cosy bathrobe.

Set the mood by lighting your candles and enhance the aromatic experience with a selection of essential oils. All that’s left to do now is to sink into that well-deserved bath and enjoy the unwind.

The location of The Block 2026 has been revealed https://www.homestolove.com.au/the-block/the-block-2026-location/ Wed, 13 Aug 2025 06:14:39 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/?p=1282685 Nine in Six are in town...

The post The location of The Block 2026 has been revealed appeared first on Homes To Love.

]]>
Much to the (likely) dismay of showrunner Julian Cress, it seems the 2026 filming location of The Block has already been revealed by a show regular. Not to be confused with the current 2025 location of Daylesford, Block insiders say that next year’s filming location will return to the Mornington Peninsula, a peaceful beach town overlooking Port Phillip Bay.

Just a stone’s throw from Phillip Island where the infamous holiday houses were built, next year our favourite Block-heads will be touching down in Mount Eliza for the 2026 season of The Block. More specifically, following rumours of an $11 million purchase by the show, realestate.com.au reported that the series will be filmed at the development site of 109 Old Mornington Road, Mount Eliza, Victoria.

A plot of land that measures 13,451-square-metres and sits just minutes from Mount Eliza beach, the development has been divided into ten lots, six of which have reportedly been purchased by the network. It was sold by former racing driver and Porsche enthusiast Rusty French, who purchased the site for $2.8 million in 2007.

The Block 2026 location

Recently subdivided into ten neighbouring blocks, the proposed architectural plans seen on the listings were designed with lifestyle in mind, promising “spacious layouts, high-quality finishes, and seamless indoor-outdoor living”, all within an exclusive gated community. Enjoying sweeping water views, luxury finishes, and swimming pools, the modern homes epitomise relaxed Australian living. However, it’s unlikely The Block will stick with these architectural renders; it is a renovation show, after all.

Where are all The Block locations?

It’s no surprise that The Block loves Australia’s southernmost mainland state: Victoria. The television series has bounced around a fair bit from year to year, but in recent years hasn’t failed to stay within Victoria’s state lines. From Daylesford to Gisborne, these are the previous filming locations of The Block over the years:

Why is The Block only filmed in Victoria?

A combination of factors influence The Block’s Victorian stronghold. These include the more forgiving building and planning regulatory environment, the more accessible and plentiful selection within the property market, and the simple fact that Victoria is where the majority of the crew currently lives.

Bachelor royalty Sam and Snezana Wood sell their renovated family home in Elsternwick https://www.homestolove.com.au/home-tours/sam-snezana-wood-home-for-sale/ Mon, 11 Aug 2025 06:31:59 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/?p=1266943 State-of-the-art home gym and heated lap pool included.

Sam and Snezana Wood, one of Australia’s favourite ‘It’ couples, are saying goodbye to their beloved family home in the inner Melbourne suburb of Elsternwick.

After spending months on and then off the market, the pair have officially sold their luxuriously renovated Victorian-era residence as of July 18, with DOW Real Estate’s Taylor Dow managing the sale. While the sale price remains undisclosed, the property was advertised with a $6.6 million price tag.

The five-bedroom, three-bathroom residence was first listed by Marty Fox‘s Whitefox agency back in November 2024 with a price guide of $6.35-$6.65 million, but quietly disappeared after sitting on the market for over three months, before being re-listed with DOW Real Estate a couple of months ago.

The 125-year-old property, which Sam and Snez bought in 2018 for $3.31 million, was extensively renovated by the couple with the support of architects Castley McCrimmon, transforming it into a luxurious, light-filled family abode, complete with a state-of-the-art gym, marble-clad kitchen and a dedicated children’s wing.

The coastal suburb of Elsternwick, which is 9km south of Melbourne’s CBD, has a median house price of $1.9 million, making Sam and Snez’s property a real jewel in the crown.

The entrepreneurial pair, who met on The Bachelor in 2015 and won over the hearts of Australia with their sweet love story, were married at the end of 2018 alongside Snezana’s daughter Eve, and have since gone on to have three more daughters together.

Full of original architectural detailing, soaring ceilings and plenty of modern amenities, including a swimming pool, a guest suite and a gym, the home seems perfectly tailored to this young family, prompting many of their followers to ask why they decided to sell.

“Girls are moving schools next year and want to be close to that school,” Sam replied to a comment on Instagram back in November 2024. “We love renovating too so excited to find something we cba (sic) hopefully renovate together when the time is right but oh how we love this home.”

Sam also told Home Beautiful last year that although the home was designed to suit the family long-term, they would like a little more space. I definitely think our goal was to make this a forever home, and I don’t think we have outgrown it – we could comfortably live here for the next 30 years. However, as the kids get bigger I’d love them to have a slightly bigger backyard and guest bedroom,” he said. “I think the fact we also love renovating gives us that extra motivation to see what we can do for our next home.”

The Paddington terrace where INXS lead singer Michael Hutchence once lived has sold for $2.65 million, after being listedin February with a price guide of $2.5 million. Built in the 1940s, the late Aussie rockstar owned the 2-bedroom Sydney home for a decade between 1985 and 1995, and lived there during the late 80s with his first love, producer Michele Bennett.

Located in a historic enclave just a short walk from Oxford and Queen streets, the quaint and charming single-story dwelling offers the best of inner-city living in a coveted part of Sydney.

According to realtor Zach Carter from PPD Real Estate, the property looks very similar to how it did when Hutchence and Bennett lived there. “Michael did the bathroom, so yes it hasn’t changed that much,” Zach told realesteate.com.au.

Hutchence grew up between Sydney and Brisbane, attending Davidson High School on Sydney’s Northern Beaches where he met INXS composer and keyboardist Andrew Farriss. The founding members of the band include Andrew Farriss, Michael Hutchence, Andrew’s brothers Jon Farriss and Tim Farriss, as well as Garry Gary Beers and Kirk Pengilly.

INXS made their debut at Sydney’s Whale Beach in 1977 and went on to become one of Australia’s most successful musical exports, selling 75 million records worldwide.

]]>
Yep, it’s that time again. We can hardly believe it, but The Block 2025 is well and truly underway, and if you’re not familiar with the new Blockheads, let us introduce you.

According to executive producer and creator Julian Cress, this year’s season in Daylesford, Victoria, is set to be “a classic Block series”. “We have a really diverse cast of hard-working people who are very competitive, engaged with their design, and of course we will have some high and lows,” he says.

Back in March, the new teams were inducted into the world of The Block by celebrating the Daylesford’s ChillOut Festival, a pride event that celebrates the rural LGBTQI community in the gay capital of regional Victoria. As part of their first challenge, the contestants were seemingly tasked with creating flamboyant floats for the festival’s parade, catching the eyes of fans and paparazzi alike.

So if you’re just jumping in, or keen to know more, let us introduce you to this year’s contestants.

Who are The Block 2025 contestants?

With every new season of The Block, comes another batch of keen contestants ready to reach for their renovation dreams. This year’s contestants are: couple Britt and Taz from WA, couple Em and Ben from Victoria, couple Han and Can from WA, best mates Robby and Mat from SA, and Sonny and Alicia from Queensland.

Here’s everything we know about The Block 2025 and the five teams competing for auction glory this year.

Who are Britt and Taz from The Block 2025?

Block contestants Britt and Taz
Photo: Nine

Hailing from Western Australia is married couple Britt and Taz. Britt, 30, and Taz, also 30, are both police officers based in Newman, a small mining town out in the Pilbara, and have two kids, Carter, 4, and Myla, 2.

Britt has long been a fan of The Block: “I wanted to apply for The Block for years, but it was never the right timing,” she says. “The timing now is right.”

Taz (real name Taran) was raised in Campbelltown, Sydney and moved to Perth to play football in the WAFL.

Although the pair are amateur renovators, they’ve done plenty of DIYs at their home in Newman, and are ready to tackle the challenge of The Block and imprint their home with their signature style: ‘Modern Organic Luxury’.

Let’s just hope the West Aussies have a smoother ride than their predecessors, Perth couple Jesse and Paige, who made a shock exit in last year’s season.

See their progress so far, here.

Who are Emma and Ben from The Block 2025?

Block contestants Emma and Ben
Photo: Nine

After seven applications, high school sweethearts from Melbourne, Emma and Ben, have achieved their goal of making it to The Block: “We have applied so many times! We can’t wait to get to Daylesford and get started,” Emma says.

Emma, 33, is a pole dance teacher and business owner, and her husband Ben, 32, is an engineer and aspiring firefighter.

The pair are no strangers to a toolkit; Emma and Ben have renovated two houses and built another in the past, giving them the most renovation experience out of all the teams. For this build, the pair will be creating a mid-century-themed home with a Daylesford country touch.

According to Nine, the couple are looking to start a family, and there may be more news on that front as the season unfolds.

Who are Han and Can from The Block 2025?

Block contestants Han and Can
Photo: Nine

Perth couple Han and Can (Hannah and Candice) may be in the process of renovating their Californian bungalow in Perth, but it was The Block that they were really after: “I have always wanted to do The Block but never had anyone to do it with,” Han says – that was until she met Can just over a year ago, and quickly discovered that they both wanted to sign up for the show.

Han, 29, is a geologist from the UK, while Can, 31, works in marketing and social media.

On The Block, Han is set to look after the project management side of things, applying the skills she gained from her past home renovation work with her father, while Can will steer the creative direction.

Who are Robby and Mat from The Block 2025?

Block contestants Robby and Mat
Photo: Nine

Our next contestants are best mates from Adelaide, Robby and Mat. Robby, 37, is a barber and business owner, while Mat, 41, is a hairdresser, stylist and business owner. The pair met 15 years ago when Mat cut Robby’s hair, and have been best friends ever since. “We are just two best mates, a hairdresser and a barber, gay and straight,” Robby says.

Before becoming a barber, Robby was a soccer player in the National Premier League, and Mat was one of Australia’s top figure skaters.

It was Robby’s idea to sign up for The Block, and interestingly, Mat has never watched an episode before – but that doesn’t mean the pair aren’t fierce contenders. We’re also predicting that the best mates from Adelaide might just be this year’s lovable larrikins, providing some much-needed comic relief during tense times, like the infamous ‘Waterproof Wednesday’.

Who are Sonny and Alicia from The Block 2025?

Block contestants Sonny and Alicia
Photo: Nine

From the Gold Coast is married couple Sonny and Alicia. Sonny, 44, is a plumber and Alicia, 42, is a dental practice manager, who have three kids together: daughter Aria, 12, and sons Boston, 11, and Koa, 8.

The couple were on the shortlist for last year’s season on Phillip Island, but got the exciting call this time around for Daylesford. “I was really upset last year that we just missed out, so when we got the call to say we were in it was an amazing feeling,” Alicia says.

While the pair aren’t experienced renovators, they did build their current family home and have renovated a granny flat in the past. Throughout the season, Alicia will tackle more of the shopping and be ‘the mum of The Block’ while Sonny is set to manage the site.

Who are The Block judges for 2025?

It appears that Darren Palmer, Shaynna Blaze, and Marty Fox are back for another season of judging on The Block, with host Scotty Cam sharing happy snaps of the four of them celebrating queer pride at Daylesford’s ChillOut Festival back in March.

It’s not confirmed whether or not Neale Whitaker will rejoin this season as a guest judge. Last year, Neale stepped down from his full-time judging duties to support his husband through his health issues.

The Block’s Darren Palmer has sold his multi-million dollar Bondi home https://www.homestolove.com.au/home-tours/darren-palmer-bondi-home-for-sale/ Wed, 09 Jul 2025 01:39:52 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/?p=1255416 The Block judge is saying farewell to his long-term family home.

]]>
Interior designer and The Block judge Darren Palmer and long-term partner, cosmetics expert and business consultant, Olivier Duvillard, have sold their luxury Bondi home for around $8.25 million, according to The Daily Telegraph, after it was first listed 10 months ago.

The couple initially brought the coastal pad to market back in September with a price guide of $9.5 million, before lowering price expectations by a whopping $1 million. The stylish pair purchased the home in 2015 for $2.98 million and have given the home a transformational renovation befitting their elevated tastes.

The formerly rundown property began life as a single-story Californian bungalow, but, after suffering a series of renovations, it had been bestowed a ‘higgledy-piggledy’ floorplan, Darren told Home Beautiful, the original layout of which included an above-garage granny flat that became his Hyams Beach holiday home. Now light, bright and open, the property is a product of Darren’s vision — and living proof that the judgement he passes on The Block is well-justified.

Darren told Home Beautiful that he completed the kitchen, which features a Monreale marble island bench, in just two-and-a-half weeks — not unlike The Block! (Photo: domain.com.au)

The home spills across four bedrooms and four bathrooms over two levels, reaching a total of 375 square metres. It’s the perfect abode for someone who, like Darren, enjoys sunny days and long, Baywatch-style runs, with the instantly recognisable Bondi Beach and Icebergs Pool just 400 metres away. Given its spectacular nature, we have no doubt Darren and his family’s departure will be a bittersweet one.

“This is actually the longest-term house I’ve had in my entire life, except for when I was a child,” he told Home Beautiful. “Our teenage son’s lived here most of his life. It’s definitely been a family home.”

Darren’s home at 68 Sir Thomas Mitchell Road, Bondi Beach has sold for around $8.25 million, according to The Daily Telegraph. The renovated four-bedroom, four-bathroom coastal home was first brought to market in September, 2024 and was originally slated to go under the hammer for $8.5 million — that’s $1 million lower than their initial expectations but still over $5.5 million more than what the pair paid back in 2015.

The Bondi property sold off market on July 1 with PPD Real Estate.

“But The Block 2024 only just finished!” we hear you cry. “And the 2025 season hasn’t even started!” We know, we know. But a new year brings a new series, so strap yourselves in and prepare for some whiplash, because it’s official: The Block 2025 location is Daylesford and the madness has already begun.

The location actually may not be a surprise for anyone following the series. If you cast your minds back, you may remember that The Block 2024 was rumoured to be filming in Victoria’s charming town of Daylesford. Turns out, there was some truth to those rumours, even if the timing is a bit different, with the official 2025 season at the Raglan Street site already underway.

Here’s everything we know about The Block 2025 location.

The Block 2025 neighbourhood is now selling

The Block contestants are taking over Hygge Property’s new neighbourhood, alongside 60 eco-friendly properties as part of a larger project titled ‘Middleton Field’. So, if you’ve always wanted to be neighbours to a home from The Block, get in quick. Land and townhouses surrounding The Block sites are now selling, with prices starting from $365,000 and $789,000 respectively.

With a range of homesites from 597 square metres to 1252 square metres, the plots are all within walking distance of the local primary school, hospital and retail and dining precinct, as well as the Sunday Market.

“Our vision for The Village is to create a place where lifestyle, sustainability, and design coexist,” says the director at Hygge Property, Joseph Van Dyk.

What will The Block 2025 homes look like?

Group Architects were approved to build five sustainable homes considerate to Daylesford’s landscape. The plan details that each will boast a different exterior style (from natural timber to metal cladding), but will sport matching floorplans, each with ‘5 bedrooms, study, living, covered garage, and quality outdoor areas, including heated swimming pool’, and ‘extensive landscaping’.

Member of the 2025 Daylesford “The Block” Facebook group, Sally Young, shared a drive-by that shows the site is already fenced off and receiving some prep work, while other images posted in the same Facebook group reveal that veteran builders Nine in Six are on-site. A more recent photo, captured by Facebook user Megan Jane on January 16th 2025, shows the framework in place.

Belle Property Daylesford principal Will Walton, the agent behind the site’s sale to Channel Nine, told realestate.com.au that sustainable homes, as well as homes built to accommodate multiple generations, were a smart choice for the area, usually netting upwards of $1.1 million.

“Because of new town planning regulations, most properties have to have an element of higher star ratings and that sustainability,” he said. “We have a wonderful premium design and small produce community in Daylesford that we deal with as we specialise in prestige properties in all price ranges,” he later told Homes To Love.

Kim McQueen, a local agent involved in the show’s 2021 Gisborne season, told the site that, to her knowledge, $3 million was the highest-paid price for a property in Daylesford.

The Block location for 2025 confirmed to be Daylesford

Channel Nine confirmed the 2025 location in July 2024, just as The Block was preparing for its 20th season on Phillip Island. Executive producer Julian Cress revealed details in a statement to 9Entertainment, while the mayor of Hepburn Shire Council also released a statement.

“Council is aware of the decision by the producers of The Block to choose Daylesford for the filming of the 2025 season, at the corner of Raglan Street and the Midland Highway in Daylesford,” Cr Brian Hood said in the statement.

“Daylesford will provide a picturesque backdrop for the filming of The Block, and it is anticipated that the production will generate a boost for the local economy.”

Both the mayor’s statement and that of executive producer Julian Cress reveal plans were initially made for a 2024 season. In fact, an application lodged by Group Architects and Julian Brenchley to Hepburn Shire Council and the Minister for Planning proposed the subdivision of 1 Raglan Street to develop ‘five carbon-neutral, architecturally designed residential dwellings’, was initially made in July 2023 but didn’t get approved until December 2023.

“Council originally approved the five-dwelling development by developer Hygge at the October 2023 meeting, with a significant number of conditions, including the retention and protection of all Avenue of Honour trees,” the mayor’s statement said.

“This decision was appealed at VCAT by residents, after which the Minister for Planning issued a permit allowing the development.”

Why wasn’t The Block filmed in Daylesford in 2024?

While Channel Nine didn’t confirm at the time, there were some pretty solid rumours swirling that the media behemoth had bought a large acreage in Daylesford in 2023. An application made to the local council by The Block‘s architectural firm, Group Architects, strongly suggested that The Block‘s 20th season would see the teams build pavilion-style homes from scratch, each on an acre of land on Raglan Street, Daylesford.

But alas, it was later revealed by the Instagram account @theblockinatorblog that The Block would not be going ahead in Daylesford, despite producers having secured the five parcels of land. Although council delays were cited as the reason for the cancellation, there was also an element of local outrage at play.

“Residents of the Daylesford are furious about the debacle, after reports that producers were trying to bypass the regular planning process by going directly to the Minister for Planning,” @theblockinatorblog shared. The post also mentioned that producers may keep Daylesford for a future season.

While The Block‘s arrival in Daylesford may have initially been rocky, Principal Director & Licensed Estate Agent at Belle Property Daylesford, Will Walton, says that, since, the reception has been overwhelmingly positive. “It’s wonderful to see so many businesses already benefiting from the builders and production team being on-site in Daylesford,” he told Homes To Love.

“Once filming commences we expect lots of loyal fans to make the journey to Daylesford to discover what the 2025 location has to offer.”

 • Dyson WashG1 2-in-1 hard floor cleaner, $999 at Amazon
 • Dyson WashG1 2-in-1 hard floor cleaner AND Dyson V8 cordless vacuum cleaner bundle, $1798 at Amazon

Alternative vacuum mops on sale

It’s awkward when someone sends you a fancy appliance to try and you, erm, don’t like it. But I lived the horror when the generous folks from Dyson sent over their new, beloved, much Instagrammed ‘WashG1 wet cleaner’, a $999 mop which promised to leave my floors sparking and even pick up spilled bowls of cereal without breaking a sweat.

When I heard about the Dyson WashG1, I was instantly intrigued. I’m not normally the kinda gal who gets excited by domestic labour, but this mop seemed like a very chic thing to add to my cleaning arsenal. No unsightly mop and bucket. No Cinderella-style scrubbing on the old hands and knees. Just a bunch of outstanding features that would leave my floors clean enough to eat off.

Here’s the pitch: imagine a mop and a vacuum had a beautifully designed baby. The main event is a cleaner head comprised of two microfibre rollers that spin in opposite directions to suck up food, pet hair and other debris off the floor.

There’s a clean water container which is used to add moisture to the mop – no bucket required – and a dirty container that collects the stinky water and any wet mess on your floor. After mopping, I was to simply empty the debris tray, tip out the soiled water, give it all a rinse and voilà. The mop also promised to have a ‘self-cleaning’ function which sounded excellent.

Fortunately for me, but perhaps unfortunately for Dyson’s marketing team, I don’t regularly drop bowls of cereal on the floor. My husband and I are firmly in our DINK era, and the worst our floors cop is the occasional splatter from a simmering pasta alla norma or a splash of gin martini. So when the time came to test out this bougie mop, I knew I needed to put it through its paces by splattering my floor with some seriously tough stuff.

I dug through my (wildly unglamourous) fridge to find three things I could mop off the floor and see if the product lived up to the hype. And…well…it did not. Here’s what happened.

Dyson’s WashG1 wet cleaner review verdict

 • Our rating: 4 out of 10
 • Why we rated it a 4/10: It solved a problem I didn’t have and created another, but it did manage to mop up some pretty serious spills with astonishing ferocity. I gave it three more points for trying.

Pros

 1. Picks large chunks of food off the floor with satisfying ease.
 2. Looks quite chic – for a mop.
 3. Leaves the floor clean and only slightly wet.

Cons

 1. I couldn’t find the instructions so it was fiddly to put together. Was I supposed to search for the instructions online? I didn’t.
 2. It’s quite bulky and tall, which means it isn’t able to fit easily into a cupboard or under the bed or couch.
 3. At $999 (the recommended retail price), it’s a significant investment.
 4. Took longer to clean the mop than it would have taken to clean up the food mess using a more traditional method.

What’s so special about the Dyson WashG1?

The Dyson WashG1 is something between a mop and a vacuum cleaner, sucking up both wet and dry food, pet hair and other spills off your floor and leaving it clean and fresh. Unlike other mops which utilise a bucket of water which you dip the mop head into, the Dyson WashG1 uses clean water only on your floors, sucking up the soiled water into a container which you then tip out. It also has a ‘self-cleaning’ function (apparently – more on this later) and around 35 minutes of battery life.

How to use the Dyson WashG1

Let me start with a confession: I used it wrong at first. But the reason I did was because I could not see/find any instructions, as they are printed on the inside of the box. User error? Possibly.

Fortunately, the machine told me I was using it wrong by making an unpleasant noise and failing to work properly, so all’s well that ends well. Anyway, here’s how to use it correctly.

 1. Unbox it and put it all together. I did this without instructions and managed not to break it.
 2. Fill up the clean water tank with water. Note: the clean water tank is the top one with the blue lid, not the bottom one with the red lid. I learned this the hard way.
 3. Put the water container chamber in place, press the ‘on’ button and activate the mop by bringing the handle down towards you. (This will make sense when you try it).
 4. Clean up messes in quite a magical fashion. Feel like Mary Poppins or perhaps a wizard.
 5. Begin the extremely labour-intensive process of cleaning the water container, the debris tray, the rollers etc.

Results from our test

If you’re using the Dyson WashG1 wet cleaner to polish lived-on-but-otherwise-unsoiled floors, it absolutely does the trick, and does it well.

But the point of difference over a regular old mop, which you can buy for under $50, was its ability to clean up chunky, wet and dry debris quickly and easily. So that’s what I wanted to test. I put this baby through its paces by asking it to clean three pretty delicious-but-gross things off my floor; vegan mayo, crushed tomatoes, and some seriously chunky Korean kimchi.

The vegan mayo

I could have wiped this up easily with a wet sponge, but it was extraordinarily satisfying to mop it up and see it disappear before my eyes. Expletives may have been exclaimed aloud as I was recording this disappearing act. 10/10, no notes. At this point I am obsessed.

The crushed tomatoes

These were leftover from a pretty amazing curry I made and I didn’t want to waste them, so it made total sense I would pour them onto the floor and clean them up with a funky mop. The Dyson WashG1 made quick work of the quite substantial blob of tomatoes, and I was extremely impressed.

It was at this point that I started to notice the smell. It was VERY tomatoey in here. So what’s a girl to do but add something even stinkier to the mix…

The kimchi

Look maybe this was a bad idea. Kimchi smells, erm, pungent at the best of times. But I really wanted to put down something that was both wet and chunky to trial this thing, and this was what I had on hand. I was skeptical that the WashG1 could pick up this cabbagy mess, but it did! Easily! I was floored. My floor was floored. She shone!

The clean-up

Now it was time to clean the debris tray, and this was where things started to go downhill, and fast. Mayo and tomato and kimchi, oh my! As I pulled the tray out, the smell hit me like a brick wall. It looked horrible, like vomit. It escaped the tray and blobbed onto the floor. The orange liquid seeped out of…everywhere.

I cleaned the drip tray and the water container, but I still had a smelly mess on my floor, so I prepared the Dyson WashG1 again and started mopping it up. Yay, easy.

I cleaned the debris tray again. The process of cleaning made more mess. I mopped again, cleaned again, dripped again. And repeat. There were dangly bits of cabbage caught up in the microfibre brushes. Gah! I cleaned them off with a bit of paper towel. But when I tipped the mop head up to get underneath, orange liquid seeped out of…somewhere. I cleaned it up again.

I don’t want to labour this point because, honestly, I’m tired from all the cleaning. But it was an overall frustrating experience. And yes, a couple days later it still stank so I definitely didn’t get all the goop off/out of it. Sorry Dyson, I really tried.

How to clean the Dyson WashG1 wet cleaner

Dyson recommends rinsing the water containers after each use, cleaning the rollers, brushes and charging dock once a week, and replacing the microfibre brushes every six months, all of which seems reasonable but also, well, excessive.

Overall, is the Dyson WashG1 worth it?

For me, sadly, it wasn’t. I am willing to accept I may have failed the IQ test of finding the instructions, filling up the correct water container and even choosing appropriate food to mop up. But at the end of the day, the Dyson Wash G1 wet cleaner solved a problem I do not have (regular chunky food on my floor) and created a problem I very much did have (an appliance that needed a LOT of cleaning and still stank at the end of the whole palaver).

But if you have small and messy kids or pets, or love to test out the latest cleaning gadgets, you might find it worth your while. It certainly makes excellent content for Instagram.

Meanwhile, I’ll be over here with some good, old-fashioned paper towel and a sponge.

The post Matty J and Laura Byrne share updates of their “dilapidated” South Coast home reno appeared first on Homes To Love.

]]>
“A couple of months ago, we bought a dilapidated old house down the south coast,” Matty J and Laura Byrne divulged to 347,000 of their closest friends and Instagram followers when they bought their South Coast home. “A little glass house on the seaside filled with stories and history that had been left locked up and empty for the past two years, known as Chante Mer (sing the sea).”

Laura, alongside her now-husband ‘Matty J’ Johnson, were the stars of season five of The Bachelor in 2017, but it seems the final rose wasn’t all they walked away with. Since the glitz and glamour days of reality TV, the couple have gotten married, bought a $5.2 million semi-detached house in North Bondi, become parents to two young daughters, Marlie-Mae and Lola – and now, with baby number three on the way, life is about to get even busier for the podcasting parents.

They’re onto the next chapter in their fairy-tale story, having just settled on a run-down, needle-in-a-haystack home perched high atop the cliffs on the NSW South Coast overlooking Racecourse Beach. For Matty J and Laura Byrne, the next steps now entail renovating the dilapidated $2.19 million South Coast home and restoring it to its original beauty.

“We don’t know what we are doing, or what this house will become, but follow along the chaos while we restore this old beauty, honour its joyous little quirks, and resist the millennial urge to paint everything white.”

Laura Byrne Matty J Ulladella south coast home

The renovation is now fully underway with the help of Bespoke Living Constructions and their builder, Tom Young. “We brought Tom with us to give us an idea of how bad the water, mould, and termite damage was on the property…. the verdict was “extensive,” recounts Laura on her Instagram.

“I fell in love with this old girl that day, and well…. the rest we are tackling.”

Even though contending with white ants, rogue snakes, and decision overload, the couple has managed to make a significant start to their renovation.

Tour Matty J and Laura Byrne’s South Coast home renovation

The garden

While not fully complete, Chante Mer’s garden has undergone quite the transformation. “We’ve re-leveled, ripped out the old deck and brick paths (to reuse elsewhere), and made way for a bigger, better deck,” the couple shared in a recent Instagram post. “New turf is down, fresh wooden sleeper steps are in, and while the garden beds are still waiting for their new plants, it’s all starting to take shape. Can’t wait to see it fully bloom!”

The guest bedroom

“The guest bedroom is finally done!” Matty announced on Instagram, as part of a paid partnership with Freedom. “The furniture is in, the decor’s perfect, and somehow @ladyandacat and I survived the renovation without us needing to use the room as reprieve from each other.”

The couple opted to keep things light, bright and minimalist by painting the room white, laying down a beige rug and assembling a boho-style bed frame with a rattan headboard. But with such impeccable ocean views, the pair rightfully posed the question: Should this be the guest or the main bedroom? We know what we’d pick…

The entryway

“Inching closer everyday,” declared Laura Byrne and Matty J as they slowly but surely tick off each room in their South Coast home renovation. The entryway and living area now seem worlds apart from a few short months ago, and the bedrooms, with floor-to-ceiling windows that frame the South Coast views, revel in the much-needed refresh.

But it can’t all be sunshine and beach views, with the incredible mid-century modern timber ceiling falling victim to mould and water stains. “Such a shame,” suggested commenters. “All the personality is gone now.”

The kitchen

After deciding to knock down the kitchen servery as it “required a new steel support beam which totally killed [their] budget,” and removing their “badly chipped and damaged” original floor tiles, along with a new framework, fresh gyprock, atrium windows, tiles and walnut-hued cabinetry, the kitchen these days looks irreconcilable from how it did on move-in day.

“I can’t believe that view was hidden behind the original cabinetry! So much better opened up like that.” one commenter shared. “Gosh, what a difference,” said another.

The couple then put on the final touches in the form of luxe Breccia Pernice marble and curved hardware from Lo & Co Interiors. “Laura and Matt – take a bow …It looks incredible and bravo you for it not being white, beige and sterile,” a commenter praised.

The bathroom

Then came their contentious bathroom renovation, going through a complete 360 from the endearing pastel pink bathroom of yesteryear. “Controversial, but this is what we’ve decided for the upstairs bathroom.” Matty shared. “Everything went, including the bidet, the corner shower and the internal walls. We have gone with a double shower, bench, and no bath(!).”

The bath-less bathroom prompted much discussion in the comments, with some calling no bath their “biggest regret” while others worried it was a non-negotiable with young kids.

Even the tile choice proved divisive. “We went with a beige and brown striped subway tile with just a little hint of colour with that blue trim,” said Matty, reassuring worried commenters that the pink bidet was safely in storage. “For the fittings we went with antique brass, which we love.”

“I love you guys but I hate this. Sorry just hurts my eyes,” said one commenter. “Seems all over the place and doesn’t match but as long as you guys love it!” suggested another, rather diplomatically.

“Sorry but that looks awful. You’ll be ripping it out in 5 years,” a commenter decided. Not one to sit quietly, Matty quipped back: “I can’t wait to message you in 5 years and 1 month to prove you wrong.”

“I like that they are taking the opportunity to be creative designing their dream home and are doing things that are different and that has personality and character,” this commenter said. “Might not be everyone’s cup of tea but they love it and that is what matters most!”

The kids bedroom

“A little update on the kids upstairs bedroom,” Matty and Laura shared. “This room had zero storage and was once a library with low small windows. It was going to blow our budgets opening up the windows in this room, and being the kids room we figure they are the perfect height to see the view anyway.”

They chose to make use of the low ceilings to create a reading nook from a sage green built-in wardrobe, and to tie the upstairs and downstairs together with the same tile pattern remerging out on the kids balcony.

“It’s coming together!!” they say.

The fireplace

Up to now, the pair has altogether tackled more than one bathroom, the entryway (including the framework for a beautiful big curved wall and checkerboard tiles), and the kitchen. Up next? The controversial ‘spew tiles’, which are set to frame the fireplace.

“I love seeing personality in homes,” commenters shared. “It’s the privilege of owing your own home – it’s your call, your taste,”

Matty J and Laura Byrne’s South Coast home, previously owned by a United Nations interpreter and book author who purchased the home in 1984 for $62,500, has plenty of quirks to be expected given its long, storied history.

“The south coast is a magical place to us, it’s where we got married, and now it’s where we will make memories as a family,” Laura shared to @chante.mer.house, referencing her and Matty’s marriage at Cupitts Estate Winery in Ulladulla.

Is there anything better than gathering with friends and family around a cosy fire in your backyard? Whether you have a dedicated fire pit area, or have just kitted out your alfresco space with something like a fire bowl, a bit of heat can transform your outdoor room for year-round use.

And there are plenty of options on the market, from electic heater solutions, built-in outdoor fireplaces, and DIY fire pits. Even pizza ovens can help heat your outdoor space! There are plenty of ways to ensure your outdoor areas are enjoyable no matter what the night-time temperature.

Of all the options, though, fire pits are the most budget-friendly outdoor heating option, and can be the easiest to install. They come in a range of different sizes and styles, so you can find one that looks great in your space, and even makes a feature of your backyard.

What should you put at the bottom of a fire pit?

When setting up a fire pit area in your backyard, it’s best to put a layer of fire-resistant material at the base to ensure the fire pit doesn’t overheat the ground and is stable. Something like gravel, bricks, concrete or sand would work. It’s always safest to follow the manufacturer’s instructions when installing a fire pit.

What is the cheapest way to make a fire pit area?

There are plenty of ways to make a DIY fire pit if your budget doesn’t allow for something pre-made. Fire Rings can be purchased from most hardware stores and are typically made of steel and very affordable.

Old bricks, concrete blocks or large rocks can also be recycled and used to create fire pits in your backyard for less. Visit your local tip shop or have a look in the streets during council clean-ups for materials.

Once again, when constructing a fire pit it’s important to consider safety. Contact your local fire department or council for help, and ensure you clear out any flammable objects before lighting your fire.

What do you put in a fire pit to make it burn?

Unlike gas heaters that only require pressing a button to turn them on, with fire pits, you actually have to start a fire! You can do this with firewood and kindling — hardwoods like oak, maple, and birch are the best. It’s important that the wood is dry and old to avoid creating too much smoke.

Alternatively, you can use things like fire starters and other accelerants, available at your local supermarket and hardware stores.

Being completely off-grid, this mindful home in Kyvalley is all about reaping the free benefits that the environment can offer. Run off solar panels and built using a carefully selected array of materials (including recycled timber and concrete for its thermal properties), the home works entirely with nature, rather than against it – glasses of wine enjoyed alfresco by the fire pit included!

This restored 1880s cottage in country Victoria is like something out of a fairytale. While the interiors, full of antiques and charm, are absolutely gorgeous, the surrounding gardens, designed by Darren Spiller, are equally magical. Here, nestled within the pear garden, a fire pit purchased in Bendigo offers the most picturesque spot to sit and relax.

“There’s something so timeless about marble, and the Henley Small Tray in Bracken from Country Road captures it beautifully. The natural veining and rich, earthy tones make it feel elevated, like a quiet little luxury for everyday moments.

I’ve been using it for my essentials like my keys, jewellery, and sometimes a candle, it instantly makes the space feel more considered. It’s minimal but impactful, and the weight of it just feels so luxe in your hands. A subtle detail that makes a big difference.” — Kate Walsh, Social Media Producer

Falling Woman art print

03

Falling Woman A3 art print

$36 (usually $60), The Iconic

The Iconic is currently having a huge 40% off sale on homewares, so I thought it was the perfect time to start investing in pieces that add a little more personality to my home. I have a penchant for winter blues, and honestly, this art print fits the vibe perfectly. The original painting, Decadent Youth, After the Dance (1899) by Ramon Casas, captures a moment of either bliss or exhaustion, depending on how you see it. Either way, it’s staying on my wall long after the seasonal blues fade.” — Rachel Weisz, Shopping Content Producer

Aesop bronze incense holder

04

Bronze incense holder

$210, Myer

“As an incense-lover, I believe having the right incense holder is almost as important as the scent itself. I can’t fault this asymmetrical incense holder, designed for Aesop by Vogel Studio. It is elegant and timeless – the perfect way to subtly elevate any interior. I love its bronze sheen and the way it naturally patinas over time.” — Aimee O’Keefe, Digital Editor

A purple wool blanket

05

Morgan wool blanket

“I may not be a winter person, but I can appreciate cosy nights in, snuggled under thick woollen blankets like this stylish one from Sheet Society. Made from soft Australian merino wool, this colour-blocked blanket will pair perfectly with a cup of tea.” — Grace Flynn, Digital Content Producer

Dark brown sheets from Adairs

06

Stonewashed cotton sheets in Auburn

from $69.99, Adairs

“The Stonewashed Cotton Sheet Separates in Auburn from Adairs are my new go-to for cozy, effortless bedding. The colour is this beautiful, earthy rust that adds instant warmth to the room, and the fabric feels soft, textured, and perfectly relaxed.

They look lived-in in the best way—and they’re as comfy as they are easy to care for. Honestly, once you sleep in these, it’s hard to go back.” — Kate Walsh, Social Media Producer

Pillow Talk side table

07

Meri Dark Brown side table

$38.97 (usually $89.95), Pillow Talk

“I recently purchased this side table stool from Pillow Talk for my son’s bedroom weekend makeover in a soft blue. Brown Seed Heritage Eva vase

08

Seed Heritage Eva vase

$67.46, The Iconic

“I’m completely obsessed with the Eva Vase in Dark Espresso from Seed Heritage—it’s giving major luxe vibes. Lately, I’ve been all about those rich, moody tones, and this glossy brown finish is just perfection.

The shape is so sculptural and chic—it catches the light in the most beautiful way. Whether it’s holding a few dried stems or standing solo on a shelf, it adds instant depth and warmth to any space. It’s the kind of piece that makes your whole room feel more curated.” — Kate Walsh, Social Media Producer

A set of four pasta plates

09

Porto Valentina set of 4 pasta bowls

$74.99, David Jones

“While Italy isn’t on the cards for me this year, that doesn’t mean I stop dreaming. These porcelain bowls by Aussie designer Megan McNeill are giving total Italiana vibes with their cute, deli-inspired motifs. I’m obsessed. Plus, they’d also make fabulous housewarming gifts (if you can bear to part with them).” — Rachel Weisz, Shopping Content Producer

Terracotta coloured scalloped cushions

10

French flax linen scalloped European pillows (set of 2)

$119 (was $140), Bed Threads

“I recently moved house, and these cute and cosy scalloped European pillowcases instantly transformed my half-furnished bedroom from empty and bare to colourful and cosy. They also look great on the couch, so when I had our first guests over for a premature housewarming, I quickly moved them to style the sofa. As a self-proclaimed linen convert, I can also vouch that the texture is soft and super comfy, which is arguably the most important thing (after aesthetics, depending on who you are).” — Aimee O’Keefe, Digital Editor

11

Oriana Onyx incense holder

$49, Aura Home

“After travelling abroad to Bali last month, burning incense at home has become a new habit. The scent of incense takes me straight back to the temples, rice fields, and quiet rituals (and let’s be honest, helps me pretend I’m still on holiday). My go-to piece for burning incense is a round onyx holder from Aura Home, which perfectly complements the ritual, making each moment feel intentional and sacred.” — Emily Murray, Social Media Producer

Your bathroom, but better: Refresh your bathroom without a full renovation https://www.homestolove.com.au/renovating/easy-bathroom-upgrade-ideas/ Mon, 30 Jun 2025 05:19:34 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/?p=1279926 These small updates deliver big impact without blowing the budget.

Bathrooms age quietly. Over time, fittings can become dull, storage doesn’t suit your routine any longer, and even the deepest clean can’t quite make up for that dated feeling. But there’s good news: you don’t need a full renovation to get a space that feels fresh, modern and functional.

From a simple tapware swap to a vanity upgrade that clears clutter, small tweaks can completely transform how your bathroom looks and works. MyHomeware — one of Australia’s go-to destinations for affordable bathroom essentials — makes it easy to find pieces that are stylish, space-smart and budget-friendly.

Here are five updates worth making if you want a bathroom upgrade that feels brand-new, minus the demolition.

1. Upgrade to brushed tapware

Tapware is one of the easiest ways to instantly modernise your bathroom. Brushed finishes such as brushed nickel and brushed gold hide fingerprints and water spots, making them ideal for high-use zones.

Upgrade your bathroom
Image: Supplied

Brushed nickel works beautifully with grey and white palettes, while brushed gold adds a warm, soft glow to neutral or timber-accented spaces. For a pulled-together finish, match your tapware tone with towel rails, drawer handles and shower fixtures.

2. Free up space with a wall-hung vanity

If your bathroom feels crowded or your benchtop is permanently cluttered, a wall-mounted vanity could be the answer. By lifting the unit off the floor, you create more visible space and make cleaning easier.

When you choose MyHomeware as your bathroom supply store, you’ll find wall-hung options in white (great for light, clean looks), oak (adds warmth) and black (for contrast and drama). Whether you’re working with a narrow ensuite or a shared family bathroom, there’s a size and drawer configuration to suit your layout.

wall hung vanities

3. Add a backlit mirror for better lighting

Bad lighting can make a bathroom feel flat — or worse, make your reflection look washed out. A backlit mirror adds soft, even illumination that’s flattering and functional.

Because the lighting is built into the mirror itself, it won’t crowd your wall, and installation is usually straightforward. It’s a small update that pays off every morning and night.

4. Switch to a rimless toilet

Let’s talk practical upgrades. A rimless toilet might not be the most glamorous change, but it’s one you’ll notice daily. With no rim for grime to hide under, cleaning is faster and more hygienic.

Look for sleek designs in matt or gloss finishes to match your style. MyHomeware discount bathroom supplies stocks modern models (including budget-friendly picks under their Discount Bathroom Supplies section) that blend easily into almost any space.

5. Lighten up with a frameless shower screen

Replacing a heavy-framed screen or old-school curtain with a frameless shower screen is one of the fastest ways to make your bathroom feel bigger and more open.

With fewer lines and less visual bulk, frameless styles help light flow through the room. They’re also easier to clean, with fewer edges for mould or grime to cling to.

Frameless shower screen
Image: Supplied

Frameless screens work well with tiled or panelled bathrooms, making them a great low-lift upgrade.

The bathroom upgrade you needed

A beautiful bathroom doesn’t need to be a big-budget, months-long renovation. With just a few thoughtful updates — from smart tapware to a new vanity — your space can feel fresh, functional and far easier to live in.

Whether you’re planning a weekend project or a longer refresh, when scrolling through bathroom stores near me choose MyHomeware. It has everything you need in one place. Shop online or visit the showroom to find bathroom essentials that work with your space, your lifestyle and your budget.

EOFY DEAL: 40% off at Amazon, $1,797.00 (usually $2999)

Move over Siri, Google and Alexa, there’s a new name in the house – and he’s here to stay. Rocky, the adorable Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra robot vacuum cleaner is the newest member of my little smart family and he’s fitting right in with all the smart mugs, lights and speakers I have on the payroll veeeeery nicely.

I was lucky enough to welcome the little Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra bundle of joy into my abode earlier this year and, since then, have been putting him through his paces in some of the crumb-iest of spaces. Could I blame that mess on a young toddler or a pet that sheds incessantly? No, reader, I could not. It’s a scary thing to confess to the internet that my inattentive (read: negligent) style of cooking is at the root of my floor’s crumb problem. But crumbs underfoot and pride aside, it’s not something I have to deal with any longer.

Described to me as “the most exciting new robot vac to hit Aussie shores”, I couldn’t wait to see how this hot new suction cleaner differed from the rest. Being a homes writer, I’ve tried my fair share of ground-breaking product launches, but it’s not everyday I get to dabble with “unmatched cleaning mastery” and “industry leading HyperForce.”

But is that all just marketing jargon? Or is it really worth it? Read on, dear reader, to find out.

Say hi to Rocky the Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra robotic cleaner: the newest, and much-loved, member of my family. (Video: owned)

What is the new model of Roborock 2024?

The Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra Robotic Vacuum Cleaner is the newest and most high tech robot vacuum to be released by the Roborock team in 2024. I was lucky enough to be given the opportunity to try it out for myself, and here’s what I thought.

Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra review verdict

 • Our rating: (9 out of 10)
 • Why we rated it a (9/10): The Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra makes huge strides in cutting-edge cleaning technology. Where vacuuming is its strong point, it falls down in mopping – and when it’s priced at $2,999, it has to lose a point for that.

Pros

 • The suction power of the S8 MaxV Ultra is among some of the most powerful on the market – the Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra has a huge industry-leading 10,000Pa HyperForce® suction power
 • Advanced PreciSense® LiDAR navigation prowess and AI 2.0 obstacle recognition sees Rocky traversing the treacherous path through my apartment with ease.
 • The new edge-cleaning Flexi Arm extends when needed for a superior vacuum (and it’s definitely needed, let me tell you).
 • DirTect Technology recognises messes and cleans adaptively, automatically bringing out the big guns where needed.
 • The autonomous features on the maintenance free docking station (self-washing, self-emptying) make cleaning a breeze.

Cons

 • Coming in from $2,999, this machine is a significant investment and is certainly nothing to sneeze at.
 • Comparing its mopping function to others on the market, Rocky just doesn’t leave them in the dust how you’d hope.
 • Rocky, understanding only limited vocab, will try to tell you he won’t be doing any cleaning without the exact combination of magic words. You’ll soon learn that, “Hey Rocky, do the kitchen” falls on deaf ears, but, “Hey Rocky, clean the kitchen” prompts a duteous and enthusiastic, “Okay!” I guess the robot takeover is still a few years away yet…

What’s so special about the Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra?

The Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra is Roborock’s most powerful one-stop cleaning solution, combining sophisticated technology with user-friendly features, including:

 • Corner-to-edge cleaning to get right into tricky spots.
 • “Hello Rocky” built-in voice assistant for complete hands-free cleaning.
 • Automatic pet and pet supply recognition to avoid frightening beloved furry friends, and a camera where you can keep an eye on them from anywhere.
 • The cleaning mastery duet means you get 10,000Pa suction-power, a DuoRoller Riser® Brush for fewer hair tangles and VibraRise® 3.0 Mopping System that vibrates 4000 times per minute. Essentially, that means you’re getting a deep clean every time.
 • Smart and smooth PreciSense® LiDAR navigation and AI 2.0 obstacle recognition.
 • Ultimate docking station convenience that auto empties, refills, self-cleans, washes and dries the mop pads, detects dirt, and dispenses detergent all handsfree. Plus, when connected to your home drainage, you won’t need to empty the tanks manually at all.
 • Effortless app control and smart phone connectivity.

How big is the clean water tank on the Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra?

The clean water tank’s capacity is a generous 4L and the dirty water tank’s capacity is 3.5L. If you’re anything like me, you’ll be pretty pleased with that.

All day, every day… (Video: owned)

Results from our test

To be clear, our highly scientific test was letting the little guy loose every few nights to go on a cruise around my apartment, but I have to say, I was very impressed!

What was previously an arduous chore that left me wrestling with a stick vac or dealing with a dying battery has transformed into me calling out demands from the comfort of my couch to my obedient new cleaner / housemate — à la Grecian empress, minus the grapes. I found Rocky’s vacuuming prowess to be exactly what I was hoping for; it’s perfect for a nightly whip around before bed, but I would still do a deep clean every so often for the more stubborn floor bunnies. I loved the Flexi Arm that extends to get into tight corners or tricky spots, and found the industry-leading suction power that could even expertly tackle the carpet, a breeze (literally).

Mopping-wise, Rocky was a great help and the extra edge mop was perfect for getting right in the corners. I loved the DirTect adaptive deep clean mode and the features like automatic pet detection that find and scour the areas that need a little more TLC. Extra kudos for the intelligent re-wash and re-mop settings too.

And, while I wasn’t able to use this feature personally, I was impressed by the ability to connect the dock to your drainage system to refill clean water and empty dirty water completely autonomously. Should this be right for your home, it would take hands-free cleaning to the next level.

What is the difference between the S8 Pro Ultra and the S8 MaxV Ultra?

The differences are small but mighty! While both models include auto-empty, mop washing, water refilling, auto-drying, and dock self-cleaning, only the S8 MaxV Ultra has the FlexiArm Design™ side brush, hot water mop washing, edgewise mop cloth, and auto detergent dispenser. Other differences between the S8 Pro Ultra and the S8 MaxV Ultra include:

 • Intelligent Voice Assistant
 • Remote viewing capability
 • 100ml built-in water tank, a 4L clean water tank, and 270ml dustbin
 • Roborock Smart Plan that customizes the optimal cleaning plan
 • “Add Area” for targeted re-cleaning and “Skip Area” to bypass specific areas
 • A heating module that heats water in the clean sink to 60℃.

Overall, is the Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra worth it?

Are you a cleanliness purist who prefers elbow grease to tiny automatic robotic cleaners? Then, no.

Are you literally anyone else?! Yes! I can’t tell you how many times I have fondly called out for Rocky these past few months. The convenience is a luxury, the clean floor is a dream, and the ability to call Rocky out to parade around at my visiting friends’ feet… is there anything better?

If you are deciding between a Roborock and a competitor brand, you may like to choose your struggle. Do you expect perfect vacuuming and consider mopping as less of a necessity for your floors? Go for Rocky. Are you looking for an impeccable automatic mop with some vacuuming functionality? You may like to keep on looking.

But, if you can swing the (several) thousands of dollars, I would highly recommend looking into adopting a little Rocky of your own.

Say goodbye to damp bathroom floors with these innovative and eco-friendly stone bath mats https://www.homestolove.com.au/shopping/stone-bath-mats/ Fri, 27 Jun 2025 07:18:50 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/?p=256728 Thousands have called this simple item "game-changing".

The post Say goodbye to damp bathroom floors with these innovative and eco-friendly stone bath mats appeared first on Homes To Love.

]]>
For most bathrooms, a bath mat is essential. Bath mats help keep the space dry (or as dry as possible) after a shower, bath or even when washing your face at the sink. However, finding one that is easy to maintain and durable can be more challenging than it seems.

Sure, traditional cotton bath mats are great due to their moisture-wicking and hypoallergenic properties. But they often remain damp for an extended period after use, which can lead to mould development and unpleasant odours. Not ideal.

Enter: stone bath mats.

This simple item has been hailed as the ultimate ‘Buy It For Life’ household purchase, with thousands of reviewers left shocked at the plethora of benefits it comes with (think: quick-drying, easy maintenance, durability and anti-slip for safety).

Intrigued? We spent hours researching numerous stone bath mats on the market, analysing product reviews and comparing features to create a curated list of the very best options worth investing in.

2025’s top stone bath mats

 1. Natureva Home stone bath mat in Flow Chalk, $70, Amazon (here’s why)
 2. Dawntrees stone bath mat, $50, Amazon (here’s why)
 3. Marbrasse bath mat in grey, $29.99, Amazon (here’s why)

What are stone bath mats?

You may be confused or concerned if you haven’t seen stone bath mats before. But don’t worry — stone bath mats are anything but scary. A stone bath mat or a diatomite bath mat, is made from diatomaceous stone. Diatomaceous stone is a naturally occurring, highly absorbent material, making it great for bath mats.

Diatomite stone bath mats are praised for their quick-drying nature (you can see them dry right in front of your eyes), and their ability to keep your bathroom dry and prevent mould or mildew growth.

Do stone bath mats work?

Diatomite stone bath mats work incredibly well to keep your bathroom dry after a shower or bath. Thanks to the porous nature of diatomite stone, it absorbs water quickly and effectively.

One thing to note is that these bath mats are made from, well, stone. So, if you’re used to fluffy bath mats, getting used to stone bath mats may take a while. It’s a completely different experience and feel — but fear not, it’s not freezing cold (like accidentally stepping onto floor tiles on a winter evening), as these stone bath mats stay closer to room temperature.

The post What our editors wish they’d known before starting a renovation appeared first on Homes To Love.

Ask anyone who has recently completed a home renovation — no matter how big or small — and we can almost guarantee that there is something they regret or wish they’d done differently. Maybe it’s the colour of their kitchen joinery, or that they forgot to measure something properly. Maybe it’s an issue they didn’t know about until it was uncovered, which then ate into their budget considerably.

Undertaking a home renovation is an exciting time, but it also requires a lot of foresight, research and planning. And even then, things go wrong. For many homeowners, rather than enjoying the final result, they are left feeling a little underwhelmed.

To save you from making the same mistakes, our team have shared some of their worst renovation mistakes to learn from.

REGRET #1: Not taking action sooner

“I’ve never minded doing the dishes by hand, but with a toddler on the loose and 3-square meals and a billion snacks to prepare daily, keeping up with the dishes was becoming a full-time job, not to mention a full-time bore. With each passing day, it became clear: I needed a dishwasher. Yet I procrastinated. “It’s an easy job!” everyone around me said. But something about having to organise multiple trades (a cabinet maker, an electrician and a plumber) made me put off the job. Then I got sick during Click Frenzy week and I had had enough of the dishes! Something finally clicked and ordered a new dishwasher on a whim. After speaking with a friend who told me to “Just put a call out on HiPages” I found a plumber who demolished the existing cabinetry, installed the dishwasher and made me realise I didn’t even need an electrician. The entire job was done in half a day, only required one tradie and it has honestly changed my life. Now, instead of doing the dishes, I go for an evening walk or get outside in the garden with my daughter. So, if there’s a job around the house you’ve been dreaming about but have been putting in the ‘too hard basket’, this is your sign to go for it.” — Tahni Mesann, Senior Writer

Knowing which trades to contact — even for a smaller job like installing a new appliance — can be overwhelming. This guide on hiring tradesmen might help! (Photography: Oak & Orange) (Photo: Oak and Orange)

REGRET #2: Not prioritising function enough

“I recently completed my first kitchen renovation. Well, it was more of a facelift than a proper renovation. We decided rather than replacing the entire kitchen — as we weren’t actually changing the layout — that we’d keep the bones and just update the faces of the cupboards. (I highly recommend this, it took our quote down $10,000.) But considering our changes were purely cosmetic, I regret not thinking more about the functionality of the kitchen in the design phase. There was a section of cupboards that we turned into drawers, and in an effort to “keep things symmetrical” my focus was matching the drawers on each side. But now I have a series of shallow drawers that I can’t even fit our entire Tupperware collection in, or a stack of plates, or a pot or pan. But they match the drawers on the other side… I wish I’d actually planned out what was going to be stored in these drawers, and planned their depths accordingly. Ah well, you live and you learn.” — Emma Breislin, Senior Writer

REGRET #3: Not thinking enough about storage

“We recently built a granny flat in our backyard with the intention of renting it out. But things changed and now we are living in it! Downsizing from a spacious three-bedroom house to what is essentially a two-bedroom tiny home was challenging, to say the least. The complete lack of storage in the granny flat made it even more challenging and now that we are actually living there, I really regret not thinking about this during the design phase. We have tiny built-in wardrobes in each bedroom and a decent linen cupboard, but that’s about it. We have plans to build a bench seat with storage on the deck and also install a shed, but I regret not incorporating some clever storage solutions from the start. You can never have too much storage!” — Olivia Clarke, Digital Managing Editor

REGRET #4: Not putting enough personality into it

“We bought our very first apartment back in peak Covid lockdowns, 2021. The ’70s build had vermiculite (a.k.a. popcorn) ceilings, walls with see-through layers of paint, terrible lighting, and a completely dysfunctional kitchen with no dishwasher, no space for a fridge, and an oven so old I’m surprised it hadn’t become one with the structure of the building. I’m so proud of us for the work we’ve done on our humble unit, but we never thought of it as our ‘forever home’, and thus, a lot of decisions were made with ‘resale value’ firmly front of mind. We sprayed the ceilings, repainted everything (SOS – never again), replaced the light fittings, and redid the kitchen in…drum roll…all white. Although my Pinterest boards are full of colourful designer kitchens, we played it safe with the view of appealing to the masses. I think it will still pay off in the end, I have had fun decorating and it’s a beautiful (I think) and seamless space nonetheless, but sometimes I wish I’d gone just a teeny bit bolder, a fun cabinetry silhouette here, cute handles there. Next time, for sure. Extra tip: Check. Your. Plans. Our benches were supposed to be a whole 100mm higher, which would have meant a tea towel drawer that functioned. Oops.” — Lucy Francis, Digital Editor

When it’s not your forever home, finding the balance between saleability and personality can be tricky. But remember, personal touches are what prompts an emotional response, which is what you want from a buyer. And a coloured wall can always be painted over! ((Photography: Anson Smart | Design: Marylou Sobel Interior Design | Styling: Megan Morton | Story: Australian House & Garden)

REGRET #5: Not planning the budget from the start

“After spending the last eight years renovating our home (yes you read that right, eight years and we’re still not finished!) there are definitely some words of wisdom I’d like to pass on. When we first bought our home together, we were bright-eyed and busy-tailed and our heads were filled with big dreams to renovate and extend the original floor plan. But alas, the building quotes we received quickly squashed those ideas. So, we decided to makeover the house one room at a time by ourselves, starting with the bathroom, then the kitchen, then the bedrooms, etc. How hard could it be? Well, here we are eight years later (yes, you read that right!) and in a cost-of-living crisis with no laundry, an exterior that hasn’t been touched and no budget to do anything else. In hindsight, I wish we’d gone with the initial quotes from the start. At least we would have the floor plan we’d dreamt of and a finished home. Don’t get me wrong, I love the home we’re creating and know it will be finished eventually, but if you take one thing away from our renovating journey, it should be that proper budgeting and planning is absolutely crucial, right from the start!” — Emily Murray, Social Media Producer

REGRET #6: Not thinking about the drain

“We got our dream bathtub in our home reno and I wouldn’t change a thing with the material mix, layout or the luxe factor. The compromise was to opt for a shower over our clawfoot bathtub. No problems in terms of access or waterproofing and I love the way it’s tucked into a nook, but the drainage hole for the entire bathroom was placed in the centre of the room. This makes sense in theory, but means any oversplash from the shower collects in the middle of the floor and needs to be squeegeed up each time, which keeps the floor clean but is a bit of a drag. Also, if we grow old in this house as planned, we may eventually take out the tub altogether (wah!) so I wish we had thought to ensure the “fall” of the tiled floor was sloped into a discreet corner, out of sight.” — Diana Moore, Digital Editor

This is the actual “dream” claw-foot bath in question, which Diana found on ebay. Coupled with the exposed ‘Olde English’ shower set from Astra Walker and ‘Quinta’ ceramic tiles from Academy Tiles, there isn’t a thing she’d change about the bathroom — except for the functionality. (Photography: Cath Muscat | Styling: John Mangila | Story: Home Beautiful)

If you’re renovating or moving, or you’re just in the mood to reorganise your bedroom, no doubt maximising storage is on your mind. Enter: storage beds, the multi-functional furniture pick that combines purpose and comfort. As your bed is generally the largest item of furniture in a bedroom, it’s important to choose the one to create a streamlined space that’s efficient and looks beautiful (of course!).

Whether you live in a tiny apartment or a large family home, there are a myriad of options on the market in every size, shape, and price range — so finding the right one can be overwhelming. Are storage beds worth it?

Storage beds are definitely worth the investment. A bed is usually the biggest piece of furniture in a bedroom, so choosing a bed frame that includes storage means you’ll make the most of the space under your bed, which would otherwise be wasted. Underbed storage is perfect for storing out-of-season clothing, bulky items, occasion wear, and shoes.

Is it good to sleep on a storage bed?

Yes! Storage beds are usually just as comfortable as their non-storage counterparts. Generally, wooden slats are used to support the mattress, which is the same mechanism used in many standard beds. Plus you’ll sleep easy knowing you’ve chosen an option that maximises storage and minimises clutter, which is beneficial for keeping your bedroom clean and dust-free.

What is the difference between a Murphy bed and a storage bed?

A Murphy bed has hinges at one end so it can be stored vertically, either inside a concealed cabinet or against a wall. Murphy beds are most commonly found in studio apartments. In contrast, a storage bed is a bed frame that offers additional under-bed storage, whether in the form of gas lift springs or drawers.

What does a weighted blanket actually do?

Drawing from the therapeutic technique of ‘deep pressure stimulation’, weighted blankets use weight (via glass beads or another heavy material) to alleviate anxiety and encourage a feeling of calm. According to the Sleep Foundation, this technique is thought to promote serotonin, reduce cortisol and increase melatonin levels. This hormone shift could then possibly aid sleep and ease stress.

How heavy should your weighted blanket be?

While the recommended weight of a weighted blanket varies slightly depending on who you ask, the consensus-approved sweet spot is around 10 to 15 per cent of your body weight, with some variability depending on desired pressure. For example, a 6kg blanket is recommended for people who weigh between 55 and 80kg. However, it must be mentioned that children under four (at a minimum) should not use weighted blankets for safety reasons.

How do you wash a weighted blanket?

Many weighted blankets are actually machine washable (mild detergent and a cold, gentle wash cycle are often recommended); however, not all are. Weighted blankets that can’t be chucked in the washing machine can benefit from spot cleaning as required or hand washing, followed by air drying. Always consult the care instructions of your blanket.

As the days get shorter and the temperature plummets, our homes can quickly begin to feel dark, dreary and cold, both literally and figuratively. The good news is there are plenty of simple ways you can transform your home and, most importantly, your bedroom, into a warm winter retreat – not to mention plenty of energy-efficient heaters and electric blankets to fight the winter chill too.

Once heating is taken care of, you can turn your attention to making your space a haven of warmth and cosiness. Much like winter fashion, winter interior decorating is all about layering and comfort: Think flannelette sheets, chenille throws, shaggy rugs, and luxurious fabrics such as velvet and faux fur. Ambient lighting also goes a long way in warming up your space, especially during those dark and grey days and long winter evenings.

To help you create your ultimate cosy bedroom oasis for winter, we’ve shared some of our top decorating tips and found some of the most stylish bedrooms that emanate warmth.

How do I make my bedroom feel cosy?

Making a bedroom feel cosy can easily be achieved with the right decor and styling. Here are our top tips:

 • Lighting: Turn the big light off! Curate a cosy and inviting ambience with softly-lit lamps (here are some of our favourites).
 • Incorporate soft decor: Add some velvet, boucle, wool or linen into the mix, whether that’s in the form of a cushion, headboard or statement armchair.
 • Add a blanket: A chunky knit or fluffy throw is perfect for keeping warm and adding an extra layer of cosiness.
 • Layer your bedding: Mix and match tonal bedding for a cosy effect.
 • Opt for a warm palette: Earthy tones such as brown, orange, green and rust are perfect for making a space feel warm.
 • Lay down a rug: A large, soft rug not only looks good in the bedroom, but also offers an extra layer of warmth.

Mixed prints

When the skies are dreary, a bedroom layered with colourful mixed prints can make life feel bright again. In Lotte’s Hjem, a charming holiday home on the Sapphire Coast, bright, layered bedding, a selection of artworks and fresh flowers make each of the guest rooms feel warm and inviting.

The layering of earthy tones here is the key to creating a cosy room. This serene master bedroom in an eclectic and sophisticated home with European influences has a custom bedhead from Les Interieurs with rust-coloured linen bedding from Hale Mercantile Co.

Linen layers

Linen is often used in summer, but it’s actually a great option for winter bedding as it regulates body temperature and feels heavier than other fabrics. In this modern farmhouse-style weekender on the Central Coast, a mix of textures brings stylish warmth to the bedroom, with a touch of timber in the bedside table, linen curtains and a ribbed rug beneath the bed.

Olympic swimming legend Grant Hackett and his wife Sharlene have sold their newly renovated family home, which was listed earlier this year with a price guide of $7.95 – $8.4 million. The couple have recently completed an extensive renovation to imbue the property with their opulent style, including updating the flooring, kitchen and bathrooms, as well as modernising the exterior façade, pool area and furnishings throughout.

Grant and Sharlene purchased the property back in 2021 for $6.3 million, and had planned to create their forever home on the leafy Brighton cul-de-sac for their family – two children, Olympia (18 months) and Edward (5), as well as 15-year-old twins Jagger and Charlize from Grant’s first marriage to singer Candice Alley.

“We wanted to be near the beach, we wanted a large block, we wanted a pool,” Hackett told Domain. “We still wanted to have another kid, so we wanted enough room for a growing family.”

The five-bedroom, five-bathroom property, with its prime location and proximity to the beach, seemed like the perfect haven for the family – so why have they sold up?

Why did Grant Hackett sell his home?

The couple have purchased a new property in a coveted part of Brighton, where they plan to build. “We were lucky to find a rare block right here in the same suburb, and while the timing wasn’t perfect (when is it ever?), it felt like an opportunity we couldn’t pass up,” Grant wrote on Instagram.

“After much thought, we’ve made the bittersweet decision to sell and build. It’s both exciting and a little daunting, but we know the next chapter will be just as rewarding.”

Grant and Sharlene Hackett’s property at 11 Rothesay Avenue, Brighton, VIC 3186 was sold in March 2025 by Campbell Butterss, Andy Nasr and Quinty Qiu from Marshall White Bayside for an undisclosed price. The five-bedroom, five-bathroom luxury home was listed in February 2025 with a price guide $7.95 – $8.4 million, and features four car spots, a home gym, swimming pool, basketball hoop, and outdoor barbecue kitchen, as well as a high-end security system, and state-of-the-art heating and cooling.

SOLD!

According to Grant, Sharlene designed ‘every detail’ of the lavish home with her signature style, which combines a neutral palette with luxurious textures including marble, oak, crystal, boucle and travertine.

Australia’s third-richest person, Mike Cannon-Brookes, has been revealed to be the buyer of a luxurious Sydney penthouse. The co-founder and CEO of software company Atlassian recently bought the inner-city pad for $15.2 million via the Cannon-Brookes family company, according to The Daily Telegraph.

The impressive, New York-style bachelor pad features a billiard room, rooftop terrace and bar, and occupies the entire top floor of the boutique apartment block Angus House in Darlinghurst. The 1930s-era building was formerly a healthcare headquarters as well as a tyre warehouse before it was redeveloped by billionaire businessman James Packer and property tycoon Theo Onisforou in the late 90s and early 2000s.

However, it appears Mike doesn’t have any immediate plans to move into the trophy home, with the penthouse currently listed for rent. The four-bedroom, three-bathroom residence is listed with Executive Style Property at an eye-watering price of $7000 per week, adding up to $364,000 per year.

The converted warehouse-style residence earned the 2023 Master Builders Association award for Best Renovation and sits within walking distance of Hyde Park. The penthouse adds to Mike’s multimillion-dollar property portfolio, most of which is set to be divided with his ex-wife Annie Todd, including the $100 million former Fairfax estate, ‘Fairwater’, which was Australia’s most expensive home when the pair purchased it in 2018. Since then, the property record was smashed by Mike’s fellow co-founder, Scott Farquhar, with the sale of his Point Piper mansion ‘Elaine’ for $130 million.

Are we witnessing the death of ironing? A case for keeping the steam alive https://www.homestolove.com.au/shopping/best-steam-iron-australia-24662/ Tue, 06 May 2025 06:52:53 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/best-steam-iron-australia-24662 Let’s iron out the issues.

The post Are we witnessing the death of ironing? A case for keeping the steam alive appeared first on Homes To Love.

]]>
If you’re a younger Millennial or part of Gen Z, you may or may not have ever touched a steam iron. Myself included: I don’t think I’d used one since eighth grade, when I tried (and failed) to sew pyjama shorts for my textiles class.

According to a 2023 trend report by Lakeland, 30% of 18 to 34-year-olds don’t own an iron and never iron their clothes. “Covid lockdowns introduced many people to the comfort of working in leisurewear. And now most of us have gone back to work – if only for a few days of the week – many have decided there is no need for the formality of a crisply ironed shirt or neatly pressed pair of trousers.”

Like many others, after the pandemic I developed a penchant for casual-wear, and so my iron sat at the back of my linen cupboard – sad, lonely, and wasting its potential.

However, recently I’ve had a change of heart. With a growing love for oversized collared shirts, blazers, and tailored trousers, it’s clear that an iron-free home just won’t cut it. While a garment steamer is a quick and easy tool for a light refresh before heading out the door, there’s something meditative about a Sunday night ironing session – watching my favourite garments spring back to life. And while an iron isn’t the most gadget-y or technological tool out there, a good iron can really make all the difference between a peaceful experience and, to be frank, wanting to throw all your shirts in the trash.

After trying and testing a fair few irons, I’ve curated a list of the best steam irons on the market – from the affordable to the luxurious.

2025’s top steam irons to buy in Australia

 1. Best overall steam iron: Braun Carestyle 9 Steam Generator iron (here’s why)
 2. Best affordable steam iron: Russell Hobbs Rapidsteam iron (here’s why)
 3. Best cordless iron-steamer combo: Tefal IXEA Power All-In-One solution (here’s why)
 4. Best garment care tools: Joseph Joseph pocket folding grey ironing board | Joseph Joseph Glide Plus ironing board

What to look for when buying a steam iron

If you’re looking to buy one of the best steam irons in Australia, there are a few factors to consider. From basic models to those with integrated ironing boards and more, below are some things to think about when choosing a model to opt for.

Steam output

Finding a steam iron that allows you to control the amount of steam produced is vital – especially if you’re looking to iron a variety of fabrics. You may need more steam for heavy items or less when smoothing out wrinkles in sensitive fabrics such as silk.

Soleplate

This is the part of the iron that will come into contact with your pieces of clothing, so it’s important to ensure the soleplate of your steam iron is made of high-quality materials. A non-stick option is popular as they are easy to clean. Stainless steel is also a good, sturdy material for soleplates.

It’s important to regularly maintain the quality of your soleplate – especially with regard to scratches or stains – to ensure it doesn’t damage your clothes when in use.

Capacity

This is how much water you can store in the water tank of the steam iron. A bigger capacity means less refilling, however, it may be more difficult to manoeuvre due to its weight. A clear water tank is also a great element to consider, as you’ll be able to see just how much water is left while you iron.

Auto shut-off

A safety measure like an auto shut-off feature for a steam iron is, in our opinion, a must-have – especially when life gets busy.

What is the difference between cheap and expensive steam irons?

The old adage ‘you get what you pay for’ isn’t always true, especially when it comes to irons. While steam irons range in price from around $10 all the way into the multiple hundreds, you don’t need to break the bank to find one that works for you. There are several top-rated steam irons around $100 which will get your clothes smooth without a hitch.

Some issues that are often seen with cheaper irons include dripping, scale build-up around the steam holes, and a lack of features including temperature control and auto shut-off, which we believe are essential.

Should you invest in a steam station?

If you’re short on time or have a high volume of ironing to get through, you may find it worthwhile to invest in a steam station. These irons come with a larger water reservoir which makes them bulkier and heavier, however they do make quick work of creases and will help you tackle your laundry basket with more ease than a standard steam iron. We have outlined our favourite steam stations below.

What do professionals use to iron clothes?

If you’re a regular ironer and keen to improve your performance or technique to get a better result, you might like to take some tips from the pros. Aside from investing in a decent steam iron, you’ll also want to use a pressing cloth which sits between the iron and your clothing to protect it from scale build-up, debris or worse, burns.

A spray bottle is also a great accessory to help you achieve a professional result. Slightly dampening your fabric before ironing makes it quicker and easier to remove wrinkles.

If you’re ironing a lot of business shirts, you may like to get yourself a sleeve board which is like a mini ironing board which your sleeves slide onto. This will make ironing sleeves much less awkward and help you achieve a flawless finish.

5 viral cleaning hacks experts say you should definitely never try at home https://www.homestolove.com.au/lifestyle/cleaning-hacks-to-avoid-24767/ Mon, 05 May 2025 06:14:04 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/cleaning-hacks-to-avoid-24767 Put down the bleach! These "hacks" could be doing far more damage than you know.

The post 5 viral cleaning hacks experts say you should definitely never try at home appeared first on Homes To Love.

]]>
You’ve seen the viral videos on TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, maybe even on your favourite morning shows. The oh-so-easy cleaning “hacks” that promise to solve all of your grit and grime woes in the simplest of ways, using readily available products that almost all of us will have in our cupboards. Now, hands up if you’re guilty of trying one?

Look, the truth is, we’re all for a speedy solution that minimises time spent slopping up spills and stains – truthfully, we’ve even tried and tested some ourselves. But according to experts, the success and effectiveness of these so-called hacks shouldn’t always be bought into so easily – in fact, some of them could actually be doing some serious damage!

We asked the experts at bespoke cleaning and housekeeping company, Jetlag Remedy, to reveal the things they wish you’d stop trying at home. So, here are 5 cleaning hacks to avoid at all costs.

Keeping your kitchen clean is no mean feat – but beware the shortcut. (Photography: Damian Bennett | Story: real living)

1. Putting a sponge in the microwave

That gross sponge that usually sits dormant in your sink? Imagine if you could pop it in the microwave and pull out a like-new version, saving you money, time and effort. Unfortunately, it’s not so simple, says Simone Tsigolis of Jetlag Remedy. “This cleaning hack is often used to kill bacteria on a sponge. However, it can be unsafe and potentially even become a fire hazard,” she explains. Oops!

“Microwaving sponges can lead to overheating and ignition of certain materials in the sponge. Additionally, it may not effectively eliminate all bacteria present. We recommend replacing your sponges regularly (every few weeks) and sanitising them by soaking in a solution of water and bleach or running them through a dishwasher on a hot cycle.”

BRB – off to replace our sponges that are definitely a little over a few weeks old.

2. Using lemon juice to clean stainless steel

Resilient, easy to care for and sleek, many opt for stainless steel benches in a kitchen for very good reason. But if that’s you, for the love of God, put down that lemon. “While lemon juice is commonly believed to clean and shine stainless steel surfaces, it can actually cause damage,” shares Simone.

“The acidic nature of lemon juice can corrode the protective layer on stainless steel, leading to discolouration and pitting (holes) over time. Instead, opt for a stainless steel cleaner (which you can purchase from a supermarket) or a mixture of mild dish soap and warm water to maintain the shine without causing harm.”

3. Can you mix vinegar and bleach?

Say it with me now: NO!!! While both vinegar and bleach are touted as incredibly effective and powerful household cleaners, together, they are bad news. “This mixture can produce toxic chlorine gas, which can be extremely harmful when inhaled. It is essential to avoid this combination as it poses serious health risks,” says Simone.

Instead, Simone suggests using vinegar and bleach separately in well-ventilated areas, always following the instructions on the product labels. However, if you’re tackling mould, you may need to consider a different method: “Remember, bleach only masks the mould – it does not kill it!”

4. Using newspaper to clean glass

Recommended as a hack to save money, newspaper has sometimes been said to be an effective tool for window washing, with some experts claiming it to be more absorbent than paper towel. However, Simone says that it’s best to leave The Sydney Morning Herald for crosswords and a cup of tea.

“Using newspaper to clean windows may seem like an economical choice, but it can leave behind ink residue and streaks on the glass,” she explains. “Instead, opt for microfibre cloths or lint-free paper towels paired with a streak-free glass cleaner or a mixture of water and vinegar. These alternatives will provide a clearer and more effective result.”

A bathroom with a gold framed shower

We know it can be tempting to weaponise every single potent cleaning product under the sun to bring your bathroom back to beautiful, but just… don’t. (Photography: Abbie Melle | Styling: Steve Cordony | Story: Country Style)

5. Using hairspray to remove stains

A beauty product that doubles as an effective stain buster? We love to see it. But the reality is, we don’t. “Hairspray is sometimes suggested as a stain remover for fabrics or even texta on walls (thanks, kids!). However, it often contains alcohol and other chemicals that can further set the stain or damage the fabric/paint,” Simone warns.

Instead, she recommends blotting the stain gently with a clean cloth or sponge, followed by a specialised stain remover or a mixture of mild detergent and water. “Always follow the fabric care instructions and test any new cleaning solution on a small, inconspicuous area before applying it to the stain.”

Which cleaning products should you never mix?

When tackling tough-to-remove stains and grime, it may be tempting to combine cleaning products, however, this can be dangerous territory. Just like how you should never mix vinegar and bleach, you should also never mix toilet cleaner and bleach, bleach and rubbing alcohol, and different types of drain cleaners. Together, these strong cleaning agents produce toxic fumes and/or corrosive substances. No, thank you!

The buyer of a lavish mansion in Sydney has been confirmed by the Australian Financial Review to be Natalie Khoei, the co-founder of fast fashion brand Meshki.

According to property records, the French Provincial-style home was sold on March 14 for a whopping $48.5 million – one of the biggest sales of 2025, so far.

Located in what listing agency McGrath Double Bay describes as ‘Bellevue Hill’s most coveted golden triangle’, the six-bedroom trophy home boasts harbour views, a swimming pool, a stone terrace and an au pair suite.

The villa-style residence was sold by filmmaker Warwick Ross and his wife, a former journalist, Margot Ross, who purchased the home in 1996 for $3.27 million.

Now, the keys to the Bellevue Hill property will be handed over to the millionaire millennial, who co-founded the successful online fashion brand alongside her friend Shadi Kord back in 2013 while studying architecture at the University of New South Wales.

Natalie’s move to the esteemed suburb will also make her neighbours with her business partner after Shadi bought her own trophy home nearby for $23 million last year.

Since founding Meshki, Natalie and Shadi have made the Forbes’ 30 Under 30 list and built a global brand that now ships to over 190 countries. Meshki is forecast to make $300 million in revenue this year.

Australian singer-songwriter Amy Shark and her husband and manager, Shane Billings, have sold their modern beachside retreat on the Tweed Coast to the tune of $2.25 million. The pair bought the architecturally designed Casuarina property as a holiday home for $2.1 million back in 2023, following a move down to Sydney from the Gold Coast, where Amy is from.

Situated just a stroll away from the beach, the four-bedroom bungalow sits on 541 square metres and boasts a swimming pool, in-ground fire pit and seamless indoor-outdoor living.

After selling the coastal property, the eight-time ARIA award-winner announced to her 247,000 Instagram followers that she would be “heading away to write an album”. The news comes after the singer finished up filming another season of Australian Idol, judging alongside Kyle Sandilands and Marcia Hines.

Before her music career took off, the ‘Adore’ singer worked as a video producer for the NRL’s Gold Coast Titans. The musician is set to make her acting debut, starring in a Stan Original film called Best In Me alongside Russell Crowe, Luke Hemsworth and Daniel MacPherson which will be released later this year.

Whether for the boutique wineries, foodie hotspots, beautiful bushwalks, rolling rural landscape or music scene, there’s an allure to the Hunter Valley in NSW that beckons. If you’re planning a trip, you’ll be pleased to hear that there is no shortage of gorgeous Hunter Valley accommodation options, ranging from cosy log cabins to lovingly restored homesteads.

Being just over a two hour drive from Sydney, a visit to the Hunter Valley is easily done over a weekend – though we wouldn’t blame you if you wanted to stay a while, and you certainly wouldn’t run short of things to do. The Hunter Region actually spans a much larger area that extends all the way across to Newcastle, and is one of Australia’s largest and oldest wine regions, particularly famous for its production of Semillon and Shiraz.

We’ve pulled together some of our favourite Hunter Valley accommodation options below – just be sure to pack your wine coolers and picnic blankets!

What is the best time of year to visit the Hunter Valley?

The charm of cosying up in front of the fire means the Hunter Valley is ideal to visit year-round. Spring brings with it pleasant temperatures and beautiful blooms, while Autumn is grape harvesting time, so best for wineries. Winter means there will be less crowds and plenty of excuses to crack open a bottle and snuggle in front of a fire. Summer can get quite busy and quite hot in the Hunter Valley, so we would aim to avoid this time if you’re planning a trip.

Mel Gibson’s former Adelaide home is currently on the market https://www.homestolove.com.au/home-tours/mel-gibson-adelaide-home/ Wed, 30 Apr 2025 05:59:31 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/?p=1276502 The circa 1900 home has a storied past.

A grand 125-year-old Queen Anne villa in Adelaide, which was once home to award-winning actor and filmmaker Mel Gibson, is now up for sale. The circa 1900 home boasts refurbished heritage features including original fireplaces, soaring pressed tin ceilings and stained glass windows, as well as a remodelled kitchen thanks to a sensitive renovation from its current owners. While the four-bedroom home doesn’t have a listed price guide, the property is estimated to fetch around $3.5 million.

As for the Mad Max star, Mel reportedly lived at the Adelaide address back in the ’90s with his then-wife, Robyn Moore and their children following the filming of Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome in the ’80s, which largely took place in Coober Pedy, South Australia. However, the property was never officially owned by Mel Gibson. Instead, the home was bought in 1990 by Lasano Pty Ltd, a company directed by Mel Gibson’s producing partner, Bruce Davey. The property was then sold in 1996 for $318,000.

According to listing agents Williams Real Estate, the historic Hughes Street home was originally built for a decorated ship captain and features a c.1880s bluestone storeroom.

This renovated four-bedroom, two-bathroom Queen Anne villa in the Adelaide suburb of Unley is up for sale. The 125-year-old property boasts a “a star-studded past”, having been the home of Mel Gibson and his family back in the ’90s.

The Hughes Street property sits on 1170 square metres and features pressed tin ceilings, stained glass windows and a c.1880s bluestone storeroom.

The iconic home is listed with Williams Real Estate who are accepting offers until May 13.

On the market!

Earlier this year, Mel lost his and his family’s Malibu mansion to the LA wildfires, which the Oscar-winner described as “devastating” in an interview with podcaster Joe Rogan. The actor and director has reportedly begun shooting The Resurrection of the Christ, a sequel to the 2004 biblical blockbuster.

Want a dreamy sleep? These cloud bed frames will send you straight to heaven https://www.homestolove.com.au/decorating/cloud-bed-frames/ Mon, 28 Apr 2025 01:38:29 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/?p=1272195 This is one viral trend that's totally worth the hype.

The post Want a dreamy sleep? These cloud bed frames will send you straight to heaven appeared first on Homes To Love.

]]>
Have you ever dreamed of sleeping on a cloud? The pillowy, fluffy softness of a classic cumulus just seems like the perfect place for a nap. So it’s hardly surprising that cloud bed frames are trending all over TikTok, promising a night of softness, comfort and cosiness one can only imagine.

If you haven’t yet heard of the cloud bed frame, let us introduce you. The concept emerged online in response to the virality of a particular style of soft bed frame, which has been popping up in many an influencer’s aesthetic bedroom. It generally refers to a soft, usually white bed frame that extends beyond the mattress to give a cocooning aesthetic, and often comes in a textured fabric such as boucle or velvet.

There’s some speculation over the origin of the cloud bed, but most people seem to agree that the trend kicked off with the Cloud Slipcover Platform Bed from RH (AKA Restoration Hardware), the luxury American furniture company. But with an eye-watering price tag of US$3860 (around AU$6064), people have been looking for alternatives that conjure the same dreamy effect at a more affordable price.

We’ve rounded up the best soft bed frames from some of our favourite suppliers, both affordable and luxe, so you can fulfil those childhood fantasies and really, truly, sleep on a cloud.

What are the benefits of a cloud bed

Aside from the gorgeous aesthetic, which evokes a dreamy and comforting vibe in any bedroom, the cloud bed also has some key functional benefits that separate it from a run-of-the-mill bed frame.

The soft edges mean you’ll never again knock your shins or knees on hard corners, and make the cloud bed frame perfect for families with young kids who are prone to bumps and bruises.

Additionally, the frame around the edge of the cloud bed can be a great place for storing books, snacks, devices or other trinkets you want close to hand while snuggling up – but maybe leave the hot cuppa tea or glass of wine for the bedside table.
