If your FYP looks anything like ours (read: mine), then it’s full of Maxton Hall edits, theories and slow pan shots of the bucolic landscapes and sprawling country estates that play host to show’s hit new season, titled The World Between Us.

And while, granted, I’m yet to meet an enemies-to-lovers trope I haven’t taken to, I’m certainly not a cultural outlier for falling into this current obsession. In fact, the German-language show has become so popular, that it now claims the title of most-watched International Original Prime Video series, topping the charts in over 120 countries including the US, UK and Australia. Which is no mean feat given its stratospheric rise comes mere months after the zeitgeist-dominating finale of The Summer I Turned Pretty (with its equally as idyllic sets).

When do new episodes of Maxton Hall come out?

The show’s first season was gifted to us in one bingeable batch, but we’re not so lucky when it comes to Maxton Hall: The World Between Us – which follows a staggered release schedule.

The first three episodes (of the six planned) premiered in Australia on Friday November 7, 2025, with the additional episodes dropping weekly every Friday at 5pm AEDT. Of course, you can catch up on all six episodes of Maxton Hall season 1 on Prime Video in the meantime.

 • Episode 1, ‘Devastated: Aired November 7, 5pm AEDT
 • Episode 2, ‘Wish to the Universe: Aired November 7, 5pm AEDT
 • Episode 3, ‘Emotional Rollercoaster: Aired November 7, 5pm AEDT
 • Episode 4 ‘Secrets: Aired November 14, 5pm AEDT
 • Episode 5 ‘Deceptive Lightness‘: Aired November 21, 5pm AEDT
 • Episode 6 ‘TBA’: November 28, 5pm AEDT

What happens in Maxton Hall Season 2?

Maxton Hall filming locations

Based on a trilogy of novels by German author, Mona Kasten, the series charts the enthralling love story of scholarship student Ruby Bell and heir to the Beaufort fashion dynasty, James Beaufort as their opposite worlds collide at the elite private school. Forced to tolerate each other’s existence, the unlikely pair strike up a working relationship that soon turns to something more, when James and Ruby are forced to reckon with the realities of their wildly divergent life paths that have somehow become intertwined.

The official synopsis for the sophomore season of show reads“Those who fly high can also fall low…After their passionate night together in Oxford and her greatest life goal within reach, everything seems to be going perfectly for Ruby. But a stroke of fate in James’ family changes everything and James himself, of all people, brings her back from cloud nine to a harsh reality.”

Where was Maxton Hall filmed?

(Image; Prime Video)

Naturally, the appetite for detail around Maxton Hall and its beloved cast members, including protagonists James Beaufort (Damian Hardung) and Ruby Bell (Harriet Herbig-Matten), has reached an all-time high. And for the like minded among us who might also find themselves hooked on the latest addition to our must-watch shows for interior design lovers, the biggest question remains: where, exactly, is Maxton Hall located in real life?

As with other fan-favourite series that lean heavily on iconic filming locations – think the sun-drenched shores of The White Lotus, the grand estates of The House of Guinness, or the Gothic landscapes set to bring Emerald Fennell’s upcoming Wuthering Heights to life – the world of Maxton Hall is stitched together from real sites across Germany and the UK.

Filming took place mainly across Celle, Hanover, Hamburg and Oxford, mixing Gothic courthouse exteriors with university corridors, elite schools and aristocratic estates. According to Prime Video, Season 2 – based on Mona Kasten’s bestselling sequel Save You – returns to many of the original locations and travels to new areas of Hanover and Hamburg as the world around Ruby and James expands.

Below, we map out every major filming location across Season 1 and Season 2 – including what’s real, what’s fictional and which spots you can actually visit.

Is Maxton Hall a real school?

Marienburg castle near Hanover in Germany was used as a filming location for Prime Video's Maxton Hall.
Marienburg Castle in Lower Saxony, Germany, serves as the main backdrop for Maxton Hall’s school setting. (Image: Wikicommons)

Maxton Hall may not be taking enrollments anytime soon, but its scene-stealing setting is anything but fictional. The UK-based college that we’re introduced to in the novels finds its real-life counterpart in Marienburg Castle, which has surged in popularity since the show began.

Located in Pattensen in the German region of Hanover, the historic estate was built between 1858 and 1867 by King George V as a birthday present for his wife, Queen Marie of Hanover. Today, it forms the backdrop to most of the exterior scenes shown throughout Maxton Hall, but is currently closed to the public until 2030.

“It was really challenging to shoot season 2 because so many fans were there every day trying to take photographs, but the plot was top secret, so it was really a challenge for the team.” Country Director at Prime Video Germany and Austria, Christoph Schneider, told Deadline after filming wrapped.

Where Maxton Hall is filmed in Oxford, England

With a plot that’s centred around Ruby’s dream tertiary education destination – Oxford University – the storied college town features quite heavily throughout both seasons.

From St Hilda’s College in Cowley Place – where Ruby and James stay during their admission interviews – to Turf Tavern and Central Oxford’s High Street and Magdalen Bridge, the medieval alleyways and historic buildings of Oxford are a constant presence. Especially when you get to episode 2, 4 and 6 of season one.

Keen to make the Maxton Hall pilgrimage? You can check out any of the Oxford-based filming locations below:

 • Manos Cafe & Deli: 105 Walton Street, Jericho, Oxford – Ruby’s place of work.
 • Turf Tavern: 4 Bath Place, Oxford – where Ruby’s friends meet on their first trip to Oxford in Season 1 Episode 4.
 • St Hilda’s College: Cowley Place, Oxford
 • High Street & Magdalen Bridge: Central Oxford
 • Oxford University:Wellington Square, Oxford

Where is the Beaufort Villa in Maxton Hall season 2?

James and Lydia Beaufort in their family home in Maxton Hall.
In the show, twins James and Lydia Beaufort reside in a sprawling estate. (Image: Prime Video)

Museum Barberini in Potsdam, Germany, serves as the London HQ of the Beaufort family’s influential fashion empire in the show, but viewers could be forgiven for thinking the neoclassical facade was straight out of a Mayfair main road. Subsequent scenes are filmed in Potsdam City Palace

Where Potsdam becomes London on screen, so too is our sense of place altered when we step into the privileged halls of the Beaufort Villa that houses James, his twin sister Lydia and their parents. It’s within these scenes that fans are taken through some of the most memorable (and emotional) moments of series two. Don’t worry – we won’t spoil anything here!

Again, playing the role of an English country estate, the impressive home’s exterior is slightly further afield. In fact, a lot of family scenes are filmed outside and around Kyritz Ganz Castle in Brandenburg, Germany. The heritage building is located in the Prignitz district on a tiny island that’s completely surrounded by water and only accessible by boat.

Ruby Bell’s family home in Maxton Hall

In stark contrast to the Beaufort Villa, Ruby Bell’s family home is a welcome relief from the elitist world she occupies.

Located in Potsdam’s Neuer Garten (or New Garden) in Germany, the picturesque abode is situated southwest of Berlin between the Holy Lake (Heiliger See) and Jungfernsee. The area, commissioned in 1787 by Frederick William II and designed by gardener Johann August Eyserbeck, serves as a visual reminder of just how different the two protagonists really are – in the best ways.

Fans can visit Ruby’s home, and other familiar locations in Potsdam Germany at the addresses below:

Will there be a season 3 of Maxton Hall?

Everything to know about Maxton Hall season 3
(Image: Prime Video)

Fans of the breakthrough series (and literary trilogy), Maxton Hall, will be thrilled to know that, not only are we getting a season 3, but production is already underway.

Sharing the exciting news in a video posted back in June 9, stars Harriet and Damian confirmed that they were heading back to school – scripts in hand.

While we wait for season 2 to wrap, we can only speculate as to what the future holds for our favourite enemies-to-lovers. However, as with the previous two seasons, the final chapter will be based off Kasten’s final novel, Save Us, and as the synopsis reveals, we have a lot to look forward to.

“Ruby is in shock: Her worst nightmare has come true, and now Oxford and all her dreams that finally seemed within reach are at risk. Worst of all, everything points to James as the one responsible, even after everything they’ve been through together. Ruby thought that she had met the real James—the one who has his own dreams, the one who makes her laugh and makes her heart beat faster with a single glance.

“However, after an explosive fight between the two, they discover a terrible truth. Together, Ruby fights to graduate, as James tries to clear her name at school. But that means once again James must challenge his father and his expectations for him. And despite everything, James still threatens to break under the obligations to his family. Ruby and James must ask themselves if the worlds they live in are perhaps too different after all, or if they can finally find a way back to each other.”

How Klimt’s record-shattering portrait rewrites the list of most expensive paintings https://www.homestolove.com.au/lifestyle/culture-lifestyle/top-10-most-expensive-paintings/ Fri, 21 Nov 2025 04:59:47 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/?p=1296191 The prices behind these paintings are nothing short of astonishing

The post How Klimt’s record-shattering portrait rewrites the list of most expensive paintings appeared first on Homes To Love.

]]>
Gustav Klimt’s Portrait of Elisabeth Lederer has sold for an extraordinary $236.4m (approximately AUD $364 million) at Sotheby’s in New York, positioning it as the second most expensive artwork ever auctioned. The result surpasses all previous Klimt sales and establishes a new standard for modern works entering the uppermost tier of the art market.

Black and white photo of a woman in sideboard, two pattern armchairs and an artwork of a woman hanging on the wall

Painted between 1914 and 1916, the portrait depicts Elisabeth Lederer in a Chinese imperial robe against a densely patterned backdrop, characteristic of Klimt’s late ornamental style. The work survived Nazi seizure, a fire that destroyed much of the Lederer family collection during the Second World War, and decades in private hands before its restitution in 1948. Its rarity and historical trajectory have long made it one of the most scrutinised Klimt portraits to remain outside a museum.

Klimt’s painting now joins an esteemed list of artists whose works have fetched their own record-breaking sums – below, a guide to the ten most expensive paintings ever sold at auction and the astronomical figures they command.

The 10 most expensive paintings ever sold at auction

Leonardo da Vinci, Salvator Mundi (c. 1500)

A painting of a man with long hair in a blue and gold robe dress hangs on a wall in a gold frame with people standing around looking
Images: Getty

Few paintings have provoked as much debate as Salvator Mundi, a work whose authorship, restoration and disappearance from the historical record have made it a cultural phenomenon as much as an artwork. When it sold at Christie’s New York in 2017 for US $450.3 million (approximately AUD $694 million), it became the most expensive painting.

Amedeo Modigliani, Nu couché (1917–18)

Modigliani’s reclining nude series remains his most recognisable contribution to 20th-century art, combining Italian classicism with a distinctly modern feel. The elongated form, the direct gaze and the frankness of the pose have made this painting one of the defining icons of his short career, and sold for AUD $260 million.

Pablo Picasso, Les Femmes d’Alger (Version O) (1955)

Picasso’s dialogue with Delacroix culminates in this final iteration of the Femmes d’Alger series and achieved AUD $250 million. It bridges Cubism with a late, more expressive approach that he developed later in his career. It represents a point where he was deeply engaged in reworking and reimagining classic European artworks.

Andy Warhol, Shot Sage Blue Marilyn (1964)

Artwork hanging in black room of woman with pink skin, yellow hair and blue background
Image: getty

This portrait of Marilyn Monroe is among the most instantly recognisable images in post-war art. Warhol’s controlled palette, paired with the brutality of the screenprint process, distils the actress into pure cultural iconography. With its lauded status, it comes as no surprise it sold for $289 million.

Gustav Klimt, Lady with a Fan (1917–18)

Klimt’s final portrait, painted shortly before his death, reflects his late fascination with East Asian textiles and patterning. The sitter’s pose feels suspended between intimacy and theatre, a hallmark of his last works. The protait reached $166 million.

Mark Rothko, No. 6 (Violet, Green and Red) (1951)

A painting that demonstrates the full maturity of Rothko’s chromatic fields, where colour seems to hover rather than sit on the canvas. Works from this period are increasingly rare and remain pivotal to understanding mid-century American abstraction. It sold for $194 million.

Paul Cézanne, The Card Players (1892–93)

A pink wall, man in white shirt holding up a golden framed painting of two men playing chess
Image: getty

One of the most quietly radical paintings of the 19th century, Cézanne’s depiction of two men absorbed in a game conveys stability and structure through a rigorously constructed composition sold for $341 million. It helped reframe the foundations of modern art.

Jackson Pollock, Number 17A (1948)

Pollock’s 1948 works are the essence of his drip-painting breakthrough. Number 17A embodies the immediacy and controlled chaos that made him the figure of Abstract Expressionism and commanded $274 million.

Willem de Kooning, Interchange (1955)

Interchange sits at the moment de Kooning began shifting between abstraction and figuration, creating a kinetic surface that feels both spontaneous and deliberate. It is often cited as the most important work of his mid-1950s output. The painting sold for $467 million.

Francis Bacon, Three Studies of Lucian Freud (1969)

A man taking a photo of three painting in gold frames ide by side

Bacon’s triptych of Lucian Freud is a psychological confrontation as much as a portrait. Each panel isolates Freud in a cage-like space, intensifying the fraught relationship between the two artists. The work sold for $215 million.

Former test cricket team captain Pat Cummins has recently purchased a 145-year-old home for $16 million just footsteps from the iconic Bronte Beach on a quiet, tree-lined street on Sydney’s Eastern suburbs. Pat Cummins’ new home has five bedrooms, an elaborate facade, a pitched roof, and large windows – and is prime for a renovation.

He may have hung up his test cap, but cricketer David Warner is still enjoying his time in the sun with this jaw-dropping home in Sydney’s eastern suburbs. A spectacular five-storey home hugging the cliffs with views of the sea from every level, the concrete home is a true escape for the former cricketer and his family.

One half of Australian sporting power couple, Mitchell Starc and his wife Alyssa Healy reportedly spent $25 million on a sprawling country acreage in Terrey Hills in 2023. Ricky Ponting’s seven-bedroom mansion in Melbourne’s bayside suburb of Brighton, was home to the sporting family of five for more than a decade. The stately residence sits on approximately 1900sqm and enjoys three expansive levels and private laneway access to the beach, so it’s no surprise it sold after just 30 days on the market for $15.3 million.

After selling a renovated Vaucluse mansion for $12.38 million, the star batsman Steve Smith and his wife Dani Willis successfully flipped yet another property, this time in the beachside suburb of Bronte in Sydney’s east. With raked ceilings soaring above a new open-plan designer kitchen, and an undercover entertaining area with a built-in barbecue kitchen and gas-heated saltwater plunge pool, it seems the cricketer has many skills that extend beyond sports.

Michael Clarke’s tri-level home in Sydney’s Vaucluse may not have cricket nets, but it does have six bedrooms, a swimming pool and a tennis court – and it’s worth around $20 million. Sprawling across three light-filled levels, the c.1940 residence offers multiple contemporary-style living spaces, a rumpus room and gym, while the main bedroom on the upper floor enjoys a private balcony.

Cricket star Glenn McGrath tells the story of his country childhood https://www.homestolove.com.au/lifestyle/glenn-mcgrath-young-country-childhood/ Fri, 21 Nov 2025 02:33:29 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/cricket-star-glenn-mcgraths-country-childhood-13672 The boy from Narromine who became a cricketing legend reveals how working the family farm helped form his strength of character

The post Cricket star Glenn McGrath tells the story of his country childhood appeared first on Homes To Love.

]]>
In 2012, Country Style sat down with a then 42-year-old Glenn McGrath as the SCG prepared to host its 100th test cricket match. Speaking with writer Ali Gripper, the (now-retired) cricketing legend spoke about his outback childhood, reflecting on his years spent growing up in Lagoona, his family’s 460-hectare sheep and wheat property near NSW Narromine.

Now, the 55-year-old spends his days continuing his work as the president and co-founder of the McGrath Foundation, which has been supporting breast cancer care for 20 years. Glenn also works in sports commentary and is set to call the 2025 Ashes for the BBC.

No matter how much time has passed, Glenn’s memories of country life still ring true. Keep reading for a trip through the My Country Childhood archives with Glenn McGrath.

In his own words: Glenn McGrath’s country life

This story was originally published in the March 2012 issue of Country Style magazine.

When I was three we moved from a farm in Dubbo to another property at Narromine. I loved growing up in the bush and the freedom it offered. My brother Dale and I would come home from school and ride to the paddocks on the motorbike or work on the tractor and help feed the stock, and I still crave that sense of openness and space we had growing up there.

It was flat country. Apart from the trees down the back and at the front gate, it was all open paddocks. We had some big floods come through, but that’s the lifeblood of the country.

Glen McGrath as a baby in his home town of Narromine
Glenn as a toddler, before the move to Narromine. The young McGrath family lived on a farm in Dubbo until Glenn was three, when they made the move to Narromine. (Photo: News Machine/Random House)

We lived in a typical weatherboard home — my brother Dale, sister Donna, Mum Bev and Dad Kevin. In my mind it was a huge home, but when I went back there years later it seemed so much smaller than it was in my memory.

Growing up on a farm gives you a real sense of independence and a good work ethic, which you take with you all your life. You learn to do things by yourself at an early age. We’d drive four or five kilometres to the school bus and leave the car at a neighbour’s place for the day. You’d try and work out things by yourself, rather than ask for help.

At school, I was fairly shy. It took me a while to get my confidence up. To speak in front of the class was something I couldn’t do; I hated it.

Now I can speak to 100 people for an hour without notes. But I don’t see myself as any different now to who I was when I left Narromine.

My parents split up when I was 15 and we sold the farm. Mum lives in Dubbo now and Dad’s between Gilgandra and Dubbo. They were both very country people — they would treat people the way you want to be treated and had a real sense of humility. They taught the three of us to work hard and try and make the most of life and they’re just as proud of Donna and Dale as they are of me.

Glenn McGrath as a child

Dad was always out working and would come home for breakfast, dinner and tea. Or he’d take his Esky and a thermos with him for lunch.

Mum ran the school canteen. I was always very sporty and sport is often big in the bush — it’s a way of bringing the community together, whether it’s cricket, golf or tennis. When I was 11 or 12 I played golf, then basketball, but I always loved cricket. If you’d asked me back then what I wanted to do it would have been to play cricket for Australia as a fast bowler. But I was a late starter.

I played my first representative game when I was 17. I played cricket because I loved it, not because I could make money out of it. Before I went to Sydney, I was only playing the odd rep game on a Sunday and doing one day’s training. It was a big contrast going from that to playing for Sutherland at 19 and within four years playing for Australia.

It was also my first time out of home. I bought a caravan in Dubbo and Mum and I towed it to Sydney and then I lived in it by myself for the first 13 months in a caravan park — the Grand Pines at Sans Souci, Botany Bay. I had to cook, clean, wash and iron for myself. Mum helped me settle in and then said goodbye.

We thought a caravan was a good idea because I didn’t know anyone in Sydney. I also had great memories of holidays in caravans. We always went to a place called Northhaven, near Port Haven, for Christmas holidays. The milk van and the baker would come along every day.

Living in the caravan wasn’t great but it helped me focus on what I was in Sydney for: to play cricket.

I started playing in the second grade, then the next year it was first grade and after that I was invited to the Cricket Academy in Adelaide.

I was ready for a change when I left Narromine but I miss the bush a lot. Now, having a family of my own and because of what I do, I’m fairly settled here in the city. I think of myself as a sociable person but I like getting out in the open away from everything. If I haven’t been out there for a while I can feel a sort of tension in myself. Even if it’s only for three days, I can unwind and recharge my batteries. Then I’m ready to go again.

About Narromine

This small town of around 6,ooo people, lying 40 kilometres west of Dubbo, has produced several sports stars besides Glenn McGrath, such as sprinter Melinda Gainsford-Taylor. Glenn says the many sporting facilities and time to practise create the perfect training ground for budding athletes. The town also has one of the oldest gliding clubs in Australia, enjoying some of the best thermal wind conditions in the world. Sport aside, agriculture is the main industry, specifically sheep, cattle and wool production.

Where does Glenn McGrath live now?

Glenn McGrath now lives in the Noosa Hinterland on the Sunshine Coast with his wife, Sara and daughter, Madison, while Glenn’s older children, James and Holly, live interstate.

For those who love wine and all things tannin, the thrill of finding the best drop can often be the highlight of a week (a month, a year…). From inner-city wine bars and fine dining restaurants to country pubs and those off the beaten track, Australia has no shortage of places to find incredible wines worth savouring. But it’s not just about what’s in the bottle; often it’s the experience – from a sommelier’s search for rare vintages to the ambience of the space in which you drink, every component swirls together to create a truly memorable experience. There’s a reason we celebrate all of life’s achievements with a bottle.

And there’s even more reason to celebrate, now that World’s 50 Best Vineyards have announced the best winery in Australia for 2025 – the only Australian winery to make the global list. Australia’s highest-ranked wine experience, according to World’s 50 Best, is Henschke at No.47. The historic vineyard is located in Eden Valley in the Barossa wine region and has planted vines as far back as 150 years ago.

Whether you’re on the hunt for Australia’s best wine list, a small organic wine bar for skin-contact wine, or a beautiful space to savour a delicate Pinot Noir, these venues from around Australia, recognised in Australia’s Wine List of the Year Awards for 2025, are delivering wines that impress. Now in its 32nd year, the awards recognise and celebrate the most outstanding wine lists from across the country, that delight from the pop of the cork to the last sip.

From Melbourne and Sydney to Hobart and Perth, these are the standout venues with the best wine lists in Australia where oenophiles and enthusiasts alike should raise a glass.

An exhaustive exploration of every Met Gala theme in its sartorial history https://www.homestolove.com.au/lifestyle/culture-lifestyle/standout-met-gala-themes-history/ Thu, 20 Nov 2025 23:18:42 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/?p=1296095 The announcement of the 2026 Met Gala theme offers the perfect moment to look back at the concepts that have shaped its history

Taking place annually, the Met Gala has firmly positioned itself as the most important fashion event. The ancillary theme dictates dress code and décor, and complements the adjoining exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Each year’s concept corresponds to the Costume Institute’s major exhibition, anchoring the gala in something more than celebrity pageantry. The theme offers designers and guests a creative brief, shaping silhouette, references and the broader mood of the not-always-red carpet. It alchemises what could be a directionless procession of gowns into a cultural conversation, placing fashion in dialogue with art, history and society.

With the recent announcement of the prodigious theme being Costume Art the inherent relationship between clothing and the body we thought it was time to take a look back at the archives and get nostalgic over some of the most memorable Met Gala themes.

1999 – Rock Style

Rock Style was a Costume Institute exhibition created in collaboration with the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, on view from late 1999 to early 2000. The exhibition traced the influence of more than 40 rock ’N’ roll performers on fashion from the 1950s onward, presenting memorabilia drawn from institutional archives and the private collections of musicians themselves. Figures such as Elvis Presley, The Beatles, Aretha Franklin, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, David Bowie, Tina Turner, Elton John, Stevie Nicks, Bruce Springsteen, Grace Jones, Madonna and Björk buoyed the ongoing dialogue between rock music and style.

2004 – Dangerous Liaisons: Fashion and Furniture in the 18th Century

Drawing on the world of Choderlos de Laclos’s Dangerous Liaisons, the 2025 annual gala explored an era in which romantic intrigue seduction, manipulation, strategic affairs shaped the patterns of elite society. The accompanying exhibit traced how instruction, seduction and social manoeuvring defined the period, following characters such as Cécile and Valmon as they navigated a courtly landscape where intimacy functioned as currency and competition.

2006 – Anglomania: Tradition and Transgression in British Fashion

A man in a red dress posing with a man in red top, sparkly pants and black jacket on red carpet stairs

The 2006 concept aligned with AngloMania – an exhibit that traced the rise of Anglomania in Europe during the eighteenth century. The theme examined how English culture from the class system and pageantry to sport, eccentricity, the country garden and the figure of the gentleman shaped European and American imagination. Drawing on references from Samuel Richardson’s novels to the paintings of George Stubbs and William Hogarth, the exhibition explored how “Englishness” emerged as a construct fashioned through external fascination and the narratives the English cultivated themselves.

2008 – Superheroes: Fashion and Fantasy

A gallery room with a red dress and floating red hat

The 2008 Met Gala turned its attention to the influence of the superhero, tracing how both costume and superhuman attributes speed, strength and agility filtered into streetwear and high fashion. With the ancillary exhibit examining the ways pop-cultural archetypes can influence silhouettes, materials and the broader visual of contemporary style. Additionally, taking a closer look at how radical couture, avant-garde sportswear and state-of-the-art military garments as seen through the lens of the superhero can be metaphors for sex, power and politics.

2016 – Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology

A blonde woman standing on a red carpet wearing a pink gown

Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology was the 2016 concept that saw the evolving relationship between handmade craft and machine-led production. The accompanying Costume Institute exhibition showcased more than 100 pieces of haute couture and ready-to-wear, tracing how technology reshapes fashion’s traditional boundaries. On the red carpet, Claire Danes appeared in a gown illuminated by integrated lighting, while Emma Watson wore a five-piece Calvin Klein Collection look crafted from recycled plastic bottles.

2018 – Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination

The 2018 Met Gala theme, Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination, unfolded as one of the most ambitious Costume Institute exhibitions, bringing together hundreds of religious objects, including dozens of rarely seen artifacts loaned directly from the Vatican. On the red carpet, guests embraced the night’s ecclesiastical brief with theatrical precision, marking the year as one of the gala’s most visually arresting interpretations.

2021 – About Time: Fashion and Duration

Inspired by the red, white and blue silk sash from Prabal Gurung’s 10th-anniversary collection, the 2021 Met Gala theme titled In America: A Lexicon of Fashion focused on contemporary American design. The accompanying exhibit coalesced more than 100 works from designers spanning Marc Jacobs to La Réunion, forming a survey of modern American craftmanship. The evening’s interpretation of the official dress code, American Independence, grounded the night within the broader conversation surrounding American fashion identity.

2025 – Superheroes: Fashion and Fantasy

The Met Gala theme for 2025 centred on the Costume Institute’s spring exhibition Superfine: Tailoring Black Style, organised by head curator Andrew Bolton with guest curator Monica Miller, proffer of Africana Studies at Barnard College and Columbia University. Miller, whose 2009 tome Salves to Fashion examined Black dandyism and diasporic identity, helped shape an exhibition that pays homage to the late André Leon Talley. Guests catalysed he theme in looks that dissected the finer points of tailoring a fitting gesture for a Costume Institute exhibition notable as the first since 2003 to focus exclusively on menswear.

2024 – Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion

2023 – Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty

2022 – In America: An Anthology of Fashion

2020 – About Time: Fashion and Duration

2017 – Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between

2015 – China: Through the Looking Glass

2014 – Charles James: Beyond Fashion

2013 – Punk: Chaos to Couture

2012 – Schiaparelli and Prada: Impossible Conversations

2011 – Alexander McQueen: Untamed Beauty

2010 – American Woman: Fashioning a National Identity

2009 – The Model as Muse: Embodying Fashion

2007 – Poiret: King of Fashion

What is the 2026 Met Gala theme?

The Met Gala 2026 theme is Costume Art, which aligns with the Costume Institute’s exhibition of the same name. The theme examines fashion as a form of art, highlighting the relationship between clothing, the body and cultural expression.

Does Met Gala have a theme every year?

Yes. The Met Gala has a yearly theme that determines the event’s dress code and décor, and aligns with the accompanying exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Each year’s concept reflects the Costume Institute’s major exhibition, providing a cohesive framework for the gala.

What is the purpose of Met Gala?

The Met Gala is held each year to raise funds for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute, the museum’s only self-funded department. It also serves to open the institute’s annual fashion exhibition.

On the hunt for practical yet beautiful bathroom styling inspiration? Our resident stylist Sophie Wilson has curated a selection of the finest finishes and fixtures to help you create a relaxing bathroom design. “Creating a beautiful bathroom comes down to more than just tiles and tapware. A sophisticated selection of lighting, towels and accessories adds a layer of quiet luxury.”

Read on for her selection of beautiful bathroom objects to create a spa sanctuary at home.

H&G’s stylist tips to a beautiful bathroom

You don’t always need a full bathroom renovation to get the impact you’re after. With a few thoughtful tweaks, you can transform your bathroom into a relaxing escape.

Simple touches like lighting will make the biggest difference: “Bring in accent lighting to illuminate a mirror or shaving cabinet,” says Sophie. It will soften harsh lines and give the room a more calming effect.

Once you’ve nailed lighting, mirrors are the next simple swap. “For a mirror in the bathroom, I like to choose a framed piece with subtle, eye-catching details that add warmth.”

Your choice in hardware can also transform a room and add character. “A character-filled alternative to regular chrome or popular gold finishes, authentic antique brass tapware is a timeless choice.”

Beautiful bathroom

Creating a beautiful bathroom experience, even when renting or on a budget, is all about small moments of luxury, and nothing ups the comfort stakes in a bathroom like a set of luxe towels. “Egyptian cotton, bamboo or cotton all fit the bill.”

Scents also go a long way when it comes to creating a room you want to spend time in. “A scented bar of soap or a beautifully perfumed luxury soap duo is a simple way to elevate practical daily rituals.”

And for the extra luxurious touches, make intentional choices with your everyday pieces. “A delicate handwash in a beautiful glass bottle adds a luxurious edge, or you could consider a careful selection of skincare that will look as stylish on display as it will on skin.”

What are the benefits of linen bedding?

Its natural fibres are breathable and moisture-wicking, keeping you cool in summer, warm in winter and perfectly dry through the night. Linen is naturally hypoallergenic, antibacterial and odor-resistant, making it ideal for anyone with sensitive skin or a penchant for freshness. And if longevity and sustainability matter to you, linen is one of the strongest natural fibres, softening with every wash, and because it’s made from the flax plant, it’s a more eco-conscious choice than many alternatives.

Is it better to sleep on linen or cotton sheets?

It comes down to what feels right for you. Linen is loved for its relaxed, lived-in look, breathability and natural temperature regulation. On the other hand, cotton offers a smoother, crisper feel that classicists can’t resist.

There are few designers who have managed to adopt a style synonymous with their name, and among the cadre, Antipodean designer Tamsin Johnson stands apart. Her eponymous studio is notorious for its palimpsest way of layering antiquities and tactile materials to alchemise a space. Somewhere between eclecticism and modern classic, Tamsin’s signature style has found its place in a new studio located in Sydney’s Paddington. Sprawled across two levels, there’s a furniture showroom open to the public on street level, while the upper floor contains an open-plan loft space reserved for the lauded designer and her team.

Tell us about your style

I find it difficult to be concise when it comes to my approach, partly because I react differently to different spaces – sometimes shifting my emphasis in doing so. Perhaps an overarching characteristic of my work is ‘freshness’, whether that’s in the sense of play, colour or lightness. In many instances, my use of antiques and vintage pieces plays a large role in the depth of personality I give a space. I am concerned with a place being alive and full of interplay.

Tamsin found the Art Deco diptych now located in the main space many years ago. All the vintage furniture is sourced through her showroom. Flooring from The Natural Floorcovering Centre. (Photography: Anson Smart )

What appealed to you about this site?

Originally, this building housed my husband’s office [Patrick Johnson owns and operates tailored fashion label P Johnson] and my antiques showroom below. He outgrew the site and moving here was an obvious choice for me as I love a well-lit loft! What was the original concept for the studio? I wanted to capitalise on the airy and open feeling here, so I turned to shiplap walls and ceilings and sisal carpet, which I feel are apt not only as a representation of my style but for the studio’s setting – they form a blank canvas I can sit beautiful desks, chairs and tables on with poise. I wanted to emit the Australian spirit of optimism, but with some formality and polish.

A stainless steel kitchenette with abstract wall sconce and timber chair
Beautiful lights and metal wall sculptures brighten the industrial-style galley kitchen installed by Freestyle Joinery. (Photography: Anson Smart )

What are your favourite pieces?

The striped 1980s cabinet we call ‘the chicken coop’ looks great here. I love the octagonal travertine table for meetings, and use a Modernist glass table as my desk – it works well and adds a great sharpness to the space. I also adore the metal wall sculptures near the kitchenette because they add a cool edge to the timbers in the space, and the intrigue of the family grouping of ebony-framed mirrors above the stairwell. They make a strange little story and bounce a lot of light around.

Two khaki linen armchairs, timber table, abstract art, white chandelier, and mirror
Lining the stairwell are ebony mirrors and an artwork by Daniel Boyd. Furniture through Tamsin’s showroom. (Photography: Anson Smart )

Can you walk us through your art choices?

I have an Art Deco diptych that has been everywhere with me and seems to have found the perfect home here. There’s a self-portrait of Barry Humphries, which is naturally close to my heart as he was my godfather. Strangely, the slag-glass shard on my desk has followed me around like a friendly old dog – it’s a bit lumpy but we love it.

A powder room with soft lighting, abstract mirror, floating basin and silver tapware
Subtle lighting continues in the powder room. Fittings from The English Tapware Company. (Photography: Anson Smart )

How does the studio mirror the philosophy of your practice?

I believe the studio is a great distillation of my work. I love the contrasts of formality, natural light and cool restraint. There is my trademark freshness along with my love of powerful, artful objects and furniture, and the strange tension between them.

A glass desk, black leather chair and historic artwork

How does the studio itself shape the way you work?

I cannot work if I am not comfortable and surrounded by beauty – it’s my energy source. This space is as calm or energetic as I need it to be; it has tranquillity and dynamism at the same time. I love having my team with me, comfortable and nested in an environment that’s inspiring.

Celebrating Christmas at home is not without its stressors. Although you don’t have to drive anywhere, if you’re hosting, there’s a lot to think about and do. There are beds to make, towels to wash, meals to cook… Then there’s the small matter of where everyone will sleep – often the house is chock-full. Well, that’s the way it is with my extended family. It’s like Tetris!

A destination Christmas is the answer, and Linnaeus Farm, located just outside Berry on the NSW South Coast, is the perfect place to get away, in pure luxury no less.

It’s a magical spot. The two-storey cottage is in fact two houses in one building, and can cater for up to 12 guests. Each floor has its own gourmet kitchen and separate living areas. On the ground floor there are three bedrooms and two bathrooms; upstairs there are two bedrooms with a balcony leading off them and one bathroom. There is another top-level balcony that is accessible from the living area and via outside stairs. Two families can stay together, but everyone has their own space.

An outdoor pool in the country

Then there are the expansive, well-manicured grounds which are perfect for picnics, spreading out a blanket and reading, and letting the kids run wild. There’s also an amazing treehouse, complete with a slide, for the littlies – Linnaeus Farm is a children’s wonderland.

Did I mention the pool? It’s huge – big enough for the entire family – and the sunloungers offer stunning views of the escarpment and Saddleback Mountain.

The property also boasts an olive grove, orchard and edible garden planted in raised beds. Two dams provide water views – one has a hut over the water for meditation and yoga.

Guests can also take advantage of the wellness offerings at Linnaeus Farm, including an infrared sauna, outdoor sauna and cold plunge. For those seeking downtime, the deep bathtub and rain-shower heads offer bathing bliss, with Leif products on hand.

Stay at Linneus Farm

With 360 degree views of the rolling green countryside and dramatic Saddleback Mountains, Linnaeus Farm is a luxury country property perfect for family holidays. The home accommodates 10 guests in five bedrooms with 3.5 bathrooms over two floors.

It’s the perfect setting to slow down and connect with nature, and will leave you feeling much more relaxed than when you checked in. To wrap up the day, enjoy a game of petanque and then sit by the fire pit. The stars are simply spectacular on a clear night.

All guests are gifted a generous welcome bag of local treats, and can enjoy sampling the Linnaeus Collection bespoke blends by The Berry Tea Shop.

Linnaeus Farm is a hard place to leave – the peace and quiet, the views, the ultra-comfortable beds. As you drive away from the cottage, it dawns on you that you are re-entering the hustle and bustle of the real world and leaving the countryside tranquillity behind. At least, until your next visit.

Lucinda Kimpton ushers in a new chapter for this historic country home https://www.homestolove.com.au/home-tours/tullynagee-country-home-kimpton-interiors/ Wed, 19 Nov 2025 06:17:33 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/?p=1293448 A designer has gone all out at this country property with a charming scheme that preferences character, colour and custom finishes

Once the centrepiece of a large cattle stud that was later repurposed as a function venue, this early 20th-century property just outside Warrnambool in Victoria has found a new lease of life as a stylish, contemporary home.

Lucinda Kimpton, a Melbourne-based interior designer, was charged with revamping the house, which had been bought from a family who had farmed in the area for more than 50 years. She describes it as “a beautiful blend of rural charm and convenience, with a timeless character and rich sense of Australian history.”

In late 2022, two couples and long-time friends, Janice and Colin McKenna and Gill Herrmann and Alan Grieve, decided to buy the property – ‘Tullynagee’ – as a business venture. Their vision was for the homestead, clocktower and surrounding buildings and gardens to become a prestigious function and accommodation centre, managed by both Janice and Gill. However, before the makeover was complete, it was decided that the property would instead be used as a permanent residence for Gill and Alan.

Lucinda says the shift in purpose had little impact on the design direction, with only a few minor adjustments required. “Initially, the design process was focused on working strictly within the existing footprint, as requested by the clients. However, it quickly became clear that the house would benefit immensely from a new casual living and dining space, and we proposed the addition of what is now referred to as the sunroom. The clients wholeheartedly embraced the new room and it has become the most loved and frequently used space.”

With its substantial footprint, the home sprawls across one level and includes three bedrooms with ensuites, a formal dining room and classic sitting/drawing room, a generous kitchen and a conservatory in addition to the sunroom “that offers a seamless balance between functionality and comfort, tailored specifically to the clients’ lifestyle”.

In the dining room, the doors are Porter’s Paints Green Papaya, topped by a collection of plates by Araceli Adams. Richard Ellis Design Victorian fireplace in Verde Menta marble. Currey & Co‘Vintner Green’ chandelier and ‘Organic’ lamp from Cromwell. ‘Majestic’ rug from Behruz Studio. Artwork by Todd Hunter. (Photography: Lisa Cohen | Styling: Madeline McFarlane)

“The layout is thoughtfully considered,” Lucinda continues, “blending traditional proportions with a welcoming contemporary atmosphere. There is a lovely rhythm to the home, with each room transitioning naturally into the next and supporting everyday living as well as times of celebration.”

To craft this personal sanctuary, she worked with Ng Feathers Interiors, which provided architectural support to completely reconfigure the entire house. “It was a comprehensive and deeply considered process, with every element curated to create a home that is practical and full of personality.”

A kitchen with white joinery and green curtains, green door and charcoal kitchen bench
The kitchen joinery is painted a Dulux custom colour and the island is Resene Midnight Moss. Breccia Capraia stone on benchtop from Franchi Umberto Marmi. Vaughan Designs ‘Colombier’ chandelier from Domus Textiles. Roman blind in Raoul Textiles ‘Perada Grain’ from Motivo. Barometer from Miguel Meirelles Antiques. (Photography: Lisa Cohen | Styling: Madeline McFarlane)

From the outset, Lucinda had a wealth of ideas to unleash on the property. “I always carry a mental bank of favourites – artists, fabrics, colours – and when the right project and client come along, everything aligns. This was definitely one of those projects.”

Immediate choices were the Leila Jeffreys bird prints lining the hall and the Araceli Adams plates in the glass-fronted kitchen cabinets. “I’ve followed both of those remarkable Australian artists for some time, not only for the beauty of their work but for their shared commitment to wildlife preservation. Their art became an emotional and visual anchor for the design.”

Louis XVI-style console and chairs in Penny Morrison ‘Anni’ from Kimpton & Co. ‘Fresco’ rug from Behruz Studio. Artwork by Sally Joubert. (Photography: Lisa Cohen | Styling: Madeline McFarlane)

In the sitting/drawing room, a much-loved Colefax and Fowler fabric was called into play for the voluptuous curtains, which then begged to be partnered with a soft duck-egg blue on the walls. “It offers a calm and elegant contrast with the energy of the more vibrant spaces.”

The sunroom is a welcoming space with a plethora of colourful and textural finishes. The curtains are in Soane Britain ‘Pineapple Lace’ Moss/Ivory with S Harris ‘Cecile Natural’ trim from The Textile Company. Sisal rug from Floorspace. Artwork over fireplace by Alan Warren (Photography: Lisa Cohen | Styling: Madeline McFarlane)

Inspiration for the dining room came from an historic property, Claydon House in Buckinghamshire, England, which Lucinda had visited more than a decade earlier. “I was captivated by its radiant yellow walls and imagined the spirited gatherings they must have hosted,” she explains. “That feeling of vibrancy led to the use of golden chartreuse grasscloth wallpaper – a bold and joyful choice that made the space feel alive and celebratory.”

The designer feels gratified that the brave selection works so well, complemented by the Currey & Company chandelier and curtains in a Le Manach fabric. “It’s a space that truly sings,” she says.

For the main bedroom, Lucinda, who is a long-time admirer of English designer Veere Grenney, took cues from his contemporary-classic style. Framing the bay window with a canopy bed brought a country view – “something really special to wake up to”.

(Photography: Lisa Cohen | Styling: Madeline McFarlane)

Lucinda wished to honour the heritage and character of the home and so retained as many original features as possible, including the timber floors, archways and stained-glass windows. “Those features give the home a sense of timeless charm and authenticity, grounding the new design in its rich history.”

Offering a perfect blend of classic and contemporary, it’s “elegant without being formal and comfortable without compromising on sophistication.”

The owners say they are delighted that the home still feels true to its heritage after the renovation, reflected not just in the house but also in the retained 100-year-old cypress and eucalypt trees on the property. “We feel the sense of the pioneering farmers who came before us and are grateful to be the custodians of a beautiful rural homestead that can be enjoyed by future generations.”

Zac Efron’s Byron Bay eco-retreat starts to take shape https://www.homestolove.com.au/home-tours/zac-efron-byron-bay-home-australia/ Wed, 19 Nov 2025 06:10:21 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/?p=1295933 The award-winning actor has had a long-standing love affair with Australia

And so Byron Bay gains another celebrity resident. The star of Iron Claw, Hairspray, and High School Musical Zac Efron has been enticed by the eco-lifestyle of the Northern Rivers suburb with works about to begin at his six-bedroom off-grid home in the Northern NSW town of Tomewin.

On a rural plot purchased in 2020 for a reported $2 million, Zac Efron’s soon-to-be-built retreat, an hour out of Byron, will be a self-sustaining, zero-waste home, covered with plant ecosystems designed to support insects and help other species thrive. This new build, known as ‘Futurecave‘, was given the green light from the Tweed Shire council in 2024 and is set to start works as early as next year. It won’t be cheap though, with the DA reporting it will cost an additional $2.685 million.

Lush Australian rainforest

Nestled on the border between Queensland and New South Wales and currently a secluded oasis, Zac Efron’s Byron Bay eco-home in Australia spans 128 hectares with mountains, cliffs, valleys, rock waterfalls, and spring-fed dams with views over the lush rainforest surrounding. He purchased the rural plot after spending time in Australia during the Covid lockdowns in 2020 and while filming his Emmy-winning Netflix series Down to Earth with Zac Efron: Down Under. And clearly Australia’s natural beauty wasn’t all he fell in love with, as Zac-fans will remember this was also the time he famously dated an Australian barista he met at a cafe in Byron Bay.

“He just loves the Australian mentality and attitude, and he just wants to spend time in nature,” says Joost Bakker, the eco-designer Zac employed to build his new eco-escape.

Joost Bakker is a florist-turned-eco activist known for his no-waste living and the Future Food System, a self sustaining, zero-waste, productive house. “It’s not every day of the week that @zacefron asks you to design his home,” he announced on a post to his Instagram.

“Zac fell in love with @futurefoodsystem and then our family home in Monbulk and now wants a home of his own. Best of all he wants me to push my ideas as far as they can go!”

“So here we are – designing and building Zac’s home. It’s a dream come true.”

It’s said that there are over 25,000 uses for hemp. (Photo: Instagram @joostbakker)

Hoping to create the “healthiest home on the planet”, Zac has given Joost free rein to try out all of his most unique ideas, only asking that he not cut down a single tree on the property. This includes using hemp bricks, rooftop gardens, and all natural building materials – including oyster shells.

“We’re using the building to get a lot of endangered insects and species back on track,” Joost shared in an interview with Domain. “So we can actually use the building to create habitat rather than take away from it.”

“For the past year we’ve experimented with making hemp blocks, replacing concrete with two materials that restore the environment. Hemp: possibly the best plant on earth at repairing and restoring.”

Troye Sivan puts his Hollywood Hills Mid-Century home on the market https://www.homestolove.com.au/home-tours/troye-sivan-midcentury-los-angeles-house-for-sale/ Wed, 19 Nov 2025 05:25:22 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/?p=1295917 After an eight-year tenure, the Australian singer-songwriter has listed his Los Angeles home for $3.88 million

Troye Sivan has placed his Los Angeles house on the market for US $2.54 million (approximately $3.88 million AUD), inviting attention to a property that pays homage to Mid-Century design with a discreet Hollywood Hills address. Built in 1958 and tucked into a cul-de-sac in a celebrity-favoured pocket of the hills, the three-bedroom, four-bathroom home traces a clear line between classic Californian modernism and the design-literate sensibility Sivan has become known for. For anyone wondering where Troye Sivan lives, the listing marks a notable shift in the singer’s residential footprint.

The “Rush” singer purchased the property in 2017 for US $2.15 (approximately $2.88 million AUD) million and has, at times, listed it for rent. Although not always his primary residence, the house has influenced his broader design choices, including the Melbourne property he revealed in 2021. Spanning roughly 3,200 square feet, arranged around an open plan that privileges natural light and scale. “There’s a strong affinity between Melbourne and LA in terms of climate and architecture. That strain of classic California Mid-Century modernism has been a big influence,” the “Rush” singer shared with Architectural Digest during his 2021 house tour.

With the Troye Sivan’s Los Angeles house now for sale, attention turns to what comes next – where he will live, and which architectural chapter he might choose to inhabit next.

Former Australian cricket captain and podcaster Michael Clarke has reportedly purchased another property in the affluent Sydney suburb of Vaucluse. The ex-cricketer bought a tri-level mansion complete with a swimming pool and tennis court for around $20 million by private treaty, according to The Sydney Morning Herald. Michael already owns a European-inspired home in Vaucluse, which he bought for $13 million back in 2021.

Set on 1185 square metres, the modern Vaucluse estate features six king-sized bedrooms and six and a half bathrooms – plenty of room for him, his partner Arabella Sherborne and Michael’s daughter Kelsey Lee, whom he shares custody with ex-wife Kyly.

The eastern Sydney suburb is also home to a number of other Australian celebrities, including Roxy Jacenko, Kyle Sandilands and Zoe Foster Blake and Hamish Blake.

Sprawling across three light-filled levels, the c.1940 residence offers multiple contemporary-style living spaces by Melissa Collision Design. The open-plan kitchen features Calacatta marble and high-end appliances and connects to a spacious living space with a banquette seat and a custom cocktail bar. Downstairs, there is a lower-level rumpus room and gym, while the main bedroom on the upper floor enjoys a private balcony. All three levels are connected by a sculptural white staircase.

Outside, a gas-heated swimming pool and a full-sized tennis court add to the home’s impressive entertainment capabilities. Property records show that the Vaucluse home last sold for $7 million back in 2007.

Since retiring from cricket back in 2015, Michael Clarke has worked in the commentary box and as the host of Sky Racing’s Big Sports Breakfast for five years before quitting at the start of 2025 to work on his podcast, Beyond23 Cricket.

Black Friday sales 2025 are officially here! What used to be a one-day sale has since expanded, with some of our favourite appliance and furniture brands already dropping prices, including Dyson, Castlery and Miss Amara. For the modern aesthete or the home tech-inclined, Black Friday sale season is the moment to invest, impress, and finally tick off that wishlist.

So far, we’ve seen some huge drops on furniture and appliances, especially in the cleaning and technology space. Dyson is leading the tech deals this year with up to $650 off on selected technology, from vacuums to hair care and air purifiers, while rug brand Double is a clear home favourite, offering up to 40% off sitewide, plus further savings with their spend and save model.

For those looking for new furniture, Koala has launched an enviable 30% off everything sale. There are also huge Black Friday furniture deals at Castlery, James Lane, Sleeping Giant and more.

Whether you’ve been eyeing a particular sofa bed to replace the old one, or keenly waiting for a discounted cleaning appliance, if there’s ever a time to bite the bullet – it’s now.

Black Friday table of contents

From Black Friday appliance deals on major kitchen brands to all kinds of homewares and décor, the deals on offer during the Black Friday sales are often some of the biggest we see all year. Here is everything you need to know about Black Friday sales for 2025, including newly announced sales, editor picks, and frequently asked questions.

Black Friday sales are here, but when is the best time to buy?

Since Black Friday sales have extended to a month-long affair, it’s a fair question to ask – when should you actually buy? Well, that depends on what you’re buying. If you spot a great deal on TVs, soundbars, and electronics, it’s best to buy early as popular items often sell out quickly, and many early discounts match or beat actual Black Friday prices. Large appliances like fridges and dishwashers often see their steepest discounts during Black Friday week, so it’s worth waiting for those major deals. Furniture, however, tends to go on sale earlier, so it’s best to hit buy on any must-have pieces while stocks last.

Black Friday 2025 deals: Editor’s picks

I’m in the midst of upgrading my kitchenware in an effort to disguise myself as a fully functioning adult. I love the whole Our Place range, but am particularly hooked on this chic cookware set in the colour Spice (because a grown-up home still needs a bit of whimsy).

As for furniture, I own the Slideaway sofa bed by Eva, and I cannot recommend it enough! It’s chic and timeless form seamlessly fits into my living space, and I’d be lying if I said I didn’t have it daybed mode most days. Right now Eva is offering free cushion covers with every purchase, meaning you can swap the look of your couch every season, or mood.

How to prepare for Black Friday sales

Step one: prepare your shopping list

If you’re like us, then you also love a good list. Whether that’s a shopping list, a wishlist, or a simple to-do list, we can use this to our advantage.

For those using Black Friday sales for their Christmas shopping (wise choice), make a list of people you’d like to shop for. Once you have your list of friends and family written down, add one or two gift ideas next to each person to guide you as you shop.

For those who are using Black Friday sales to purchase wishlist or big-ticket items at a discount, like a robot vacuum, for example (another great choice), you’ll want to prepare a wishlist for this, too.

Step two: do your research

It’s easy enough to jot down robot vacuum onto your wishlist – and for some, this is enough to prepare for a sale. However, if you have the time, finding the exact model you want to buy before Black Friday sales begin is a good idea. The best way to do this is to read up on product specs, reviews and buyer’s guides to ensure you’ve chosen a product that meets your preferences and needs.

In an era of online interactions, it’s also worth double-checking retailer credibility and reading their Privacy Policy before purchasing. Always look for clear opt-out options if you’re signing up for newsletters or alerts.

Step three: find the best Black Friday sales

It may be obvious, but you’ll want to wait until Black Friday deals are live before shopping for too many gifts or big-ticket items. As mentioned, some Black Friday deals occur earlier than November 28 – so it’s good to keep an eye out on your favourite retailers to see when their sales drop. Or better yet, bookmark this page to keep up to date with all Black Friday sales happening right now.

Everything you need to know about Black Friday for 2025

Black Friday 2025 sales have started. So here is everything you need to know about the major sale event, including important dates and brands to keep your eye out for. Happy shopping!

When is Black Friday 2025?

This year, Black Friday lands on November 28, with Cyber Monday following on December 1. However, many retailers like to lean into the shopping fun for the month by dropping their Black Friday deals early and extending offers past Cyber Monday, too. Make sure you bookmark this page for all the updates on the best Black Friday sales 2025.

How big are Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales compared to other major sale events?

Black Friday sales was once a phenomenon exclusive to the US, where it began as a sale event after Thanksgiving. With Cyber Monday following hot on its heels, many retailers began offering deals across the whole weekend. Over the past few years, the Black Friday sales weekend has gained popularity in Australia – and if you’re like us and love a good sale, then this is excellent news.

When comparing the best Black Friday sales and Cyber Monday sales to other major sale events in Australia, like Boxing Day or End of Financial Year sales, they used to be considered on a similar scale (savings-wise and based on the amount of retailers that tap into this sale). But the timing of Black Friday and Cyber Monday (right before the Christmas period), means many retailers now see it as the biggest sales event of the year – particularly in a cost-of-living crisis, where shoppers are looking to save on brands they already love.

Is there a Black Friday sale in Australia?

Yes, Australia has had Black Friday sales since 2013, following the traditional Black Friday sales in the United States on the Friday after Thanksgiving. While Black Friday is relatively new in Australia compared to Boxing Day or End of Financial Year sales, it has become one of the most coveted sale events of the year, with Black Friday offering numerous deals across categories including home, technology, fashion, beauty, travel and more.

Are sales cheaper on Black Friday or Cyber Monday?

In recent years, many retailers combine Black Friday and Cyber Monday (which follows it) into one giant “Cyber Weekend” sale, although generally Black Friday sales offer bigger discounts across a wider range of products, both in-store and online. Many brands and retailers extend their sales across the week or month, with home brands often maintaining the same discounts.

Which shops have the best Black Friday sales?

While most online stores do some form of sale during Black Friday and Cyber Monday, some popular Australian retailers always stand out. Look at retailers like Amazon, The Good Guys, and Appliances Online for discounts on home appliances and electronics. You can also check out Temple & Webster and Castlery for great sales on furniture, bedding, and décor. These stores often advertise special deals online and in-store during Black Friday sales, so it’s smart to compare prices before you buy.

One tip is to sign up for store newsletters, as some brands will send out early access codes. Keep this page bookmarked as we will be updating it regularly for the best sales and exclusive deals.

Arnott’s simple and scrumptious dark Tim Tam pavlova https://www.homestolove.com.au/recipe/entertaining/arnotts-dark-tim-tam-pavlova/ Wed, 19 Nov 2025 02:32:27 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/?post_type=recipe&p=1295897 Put an ultra-Australian twist on a summer classic with this delicious Tim Tam pav

The following recipe is from Arnott’s: The Cookbook, which you can buy here.

Nothing says Aussie Christmas more than a pavlova, except, perhaps, a Tim Tam pavlova. Combining light, crispy meringues with decadent dark chocolate and cream, this simple and delicious pavlova recipe from Arnott’s: The Cookbook, a collaboration between The Australian Women’s Weekly and Australia’s favourite biscuit brand, is perfect for the festive period.

According to the recipe’s creator, Arnott’s Executive Chef Vanessa Horton, you can easily decorate your pavlova with other Tim Tam biscuit flavours, like Tim Tam Original or Tim Tam White. Simply bake, assemble and enjoy!

Ingredients

Pavlova

Method

1.

Preheat oven to 150°C fan-forced. Mark a 20cm circle on a sheet of baking paper; place paper marked- side down on an oven tray.

2.

Pavlova: Chop 6 Tim Tams, set aside. Reserve remaining biscuits. In the bowl of an electric mixer, beat egg whites until soft peaks form. Add caster sugar, 1 spoonful at a time, beating well between each addition. Beat for 10 minutes or until sugar dissolves and meringue is smooth and glossy.

3.

Add sifted cocoa, cornflour and vinegar to meringue, beat on low speed until combined. Add chopped biscuits, use a large metal spoon to fold biscuits into meringue until just combined. Spread mixture inside marked circle.

4.

Bake for 20 minutes, then reduce oven temperature to 120°C fan-forced. Bake for a further 1 hour and 40 minutes or until shell is pale, crisp and dry to touch. Turn oven off, leave pavlova in the oven with door ajar until cooled.

5.

Place chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave for 1–2 minutes on medium power, stirring every 30 seconds until melted and smooth.

6.

Cut reserved Tim Tams in half on the diagonal.

7.

To serve, place pavlova on a serving plate, spoon cream on top and decorate with halved Tim Tams, then drizzle with melted chocolate. Pavlova can be baked a day ahead; store in an airtight container in a cool, dry place. Assemble pavlova close to serving to prevent it from going soft.

Why everyone’s talking about Swedish Death Cleaning https://www.homestolove.com.au/interiors/swedish-death-cleaning/ Wed, 19 Nov 2025 01:59:17 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/?p=1295875 Here’s why more people are letting go while they’re still here

The post Why everyone’s talking about Swedish Death Cleaning appeared first on Homes To Love.

]]>
Swedish Death Cleaning is not as morbid as you may think. A method of decluttering that originated in Sweden, it is the practice of relinquishing your worldly possessions while you’re still around to ease the significant burden placed on your family members upon your passing. Yes, that would mean sorting through that pile of forgotten paperwork in your garage, the attic that’s filled to the brim with items that could be considered clutter, and the random spare bedroom wardrobe you’re too afraid to even peer into, lest it burst its banks and never be able to close again.

Popularised by Margareta Magnusson in her book The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning, the cleaning method also known as Döstädning implores us to reassess the items we truly value and renounce the ones we don’t, to make the lives of our children easier.

What sets Swedish Death Cleaning apart from your regular decluttering or spring cleaning is that it focuses less on how the items make you feel, and instead considers how each of the items would make your loved ones feel. It is the art of decentering ourselves from our own lives, even in death – a selfless gift we can bequeath to our next of kin.

A colourful , Anna Spiro-designed living room
Live life colourfully in this Anna Spiro abode. (Photography: Tim Salisbury)

So should you clean out your things now so no-one has to do it later? While we may think that each and every item we’ve held onto for years will hold as much significance to others as it once did to you, can we ask that of our offspring – the arduous task of sorting through our long lost memories piece by painful piece, especially when they’ll be navigating a new world without us?

Is it selfish to want to hold onto relics of a past life until the final toll? Or would we be doing ourselves a disservice to neatly pack up a life well-lived and ship it away while we’re still around to enjoy it? Is it not one of life’s joys, to fill our surroundings with objects collected from travels, pieces that have brought us joy, and memories from time spent with friends and family?

There’s a way to do it without giving up your sense of self for the sake of convenience. Start with the messiest spaces and go room by room, or zone by zone. If you come across an item that still brings you joy or you truly think it will bring joy to your next of kin, treasure it. But if it is just taking up space in your home with no tangible or emotional benefit, ditch it. Plus, there’s something to be said for a clean slate and less clutter to improve your quality of life in the present moment.

For more, mother-daughter duo Melissa and Isabella offer their generational takes on Swedish Death Cleaning.

The revival of the dinner party – and how to host a night worth remembering https://www.homestolove.com.au/lifestyle/culture-lifestyle/how-to-host-a-dinner-party-worth-remembering/ Wed, 19 Nov 2025 00:48:37 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/?p=1295529 Why the dinner party’s return feels timely – and needed

The post The revival of the dinner party – and how to host a night worth remembering appeared first on Homes To Love.

]]>
The dinner party was originally reflective of social order before its democratisation, and later decline in the 20th century, when the rise of restaurants, women’s paid work and ready-made meals made formal entertaining less common – that was until the resurgence. While it cannot be confined to a singular reason, its revival is intimate, sustainable and aesthetic. With pandemic lockdowns reframing home cooking and social media making intimate dinners aspirational again, communal eating has gained traction – with the likes of Club Sup reacting to this cultural craving.

Dinner Parties Are Making a Comeback

Originating in 2021, founder Sophie McIntyre harkened to the need for human-centric experiences and conceived Club Sup as a modern supper club designed to connect people in the wake of lockdowns. “[Club Sup] started in 2021 after I had spent some of my early 20s feeling a bit lonely and lost after a big breakup. I had moved into a share house and met the people in my life that completely changed the way I thought about myself and the future,” says Sophie. “It gave me so much confidence, love and light and I wanted everyone to have a way to access that.” From there, what was designed as a prodigious passion project grew in scale, with Club Sup now hosting transcontinental events – in London and Australia.

However, the growth hasn’t solely scaled continents but the meaning behind the gatherings. “I think eating or sharing a meal is one of the most human things we do across so many walks of life and cultures,” adds Sophie. “Nearly everyone feels good when they’re eating so yes it was always going to be a meal – although as we have grown we have expanded into to new events like lunches, book swaps or crafts.” Hosting more than 150 events spanning Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane – and buoyed by the 1,500-plus guests who have been brought together – it’s unsurprising that Club Sup has caught the eye of revered brands such as Ganni, The Ordinary and Penfolds.

“We’re seeing that all Gen Z want is to get offline and live real experiences as they’ve lived so much of their lives online. Club Sup will always be there for people to come together and connect,” adds Sophie.

How to Host a Dinner Party

Hosting a modern dinner party today is as much about atmosphere as it is about food. When thinking about how to host a dinner party, start with the intention rather than the menu.

Begin with an arrival – a cocktail, perhaps, or a small plate that encourages guests to linger. Lighting should be low and flattering, with candlelight or shaded lamps creating softness. Choose music that sits just behind the conversation, and scents that complement rather than compete with the meal.

Conversation, not presentation, remains the true measure of a good host. Encourage flow rather than perfection – serve dishes that can be shared, poured and passed. A simple roast chicken with a generous side or a bowl of pasta finished at the table is as impressive as any tasting menu. In 2025, dinner party trends lean toward sustainability and sentiment. Guests value provenance – seasonal produce, hand-thrown ceramics, linen napkins that have lived a little.

“[At Club Sup] we curate the right feeling for people to be safe and comfortable to connect and the rest is up to everyone else. Because every event is different with a different list of people and you have to allow for that – you have to allow for everyone’s lives and experiences to shape the event,” says Sophie. “So the structure is the brand I have built and the spontaneity is the people that join us.”

The simplest advice? Curate. Create an evening that feels designed yet effortless – one that moves at the pace of good conversation and leaves guests reluctant to leave.

Simple recipes ideas that make use of leftover Christmas ham https://www.homestolove.com.au/recipes/leftover-christmas-ham-recipe-ideas/ Tue, 18 Nov 2025 23:39:08 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/?p=1295800 Boring toasties begone!

The post Simple recipes ideas that make use of leftover Christmas ham appeared first on Homes To Love.

]]>
It’s a tale as old as time: after all the fuss of Christmas preparation, all the weeks of panic cleaning and present wrapping and Christmas cracker stuffing and dessert baking and family coordinating… by the time Christmas day has finally ended, it seems all you have to show for it is a happy family – hooray – and what seems to be three metric tonnes of leftover Christmas ham.

But before you sigh that you’ve already done enough this holiday season and you’re happy just nibbling on boring ham toasties – don’t. There are plenty of simple recipes you can make that use up leftover ham without the need for the extra ingredients, hours in the kitchen or more trips to the grocery store.

Here are some of our favourite easy recipes that use up leftover Christmas ham.

An easy pea and ham soup

This easy, hearty soup is filled with simple ingredients that have a big flavour. It’s filled with fresh vegetables and chicken stock and only takes 15 minutes of prep time, meaning that you can relax on the couch and enjoy the peace and quiet. It’s a delicious and comforting meal that’ll have your tastebuds watering.

A comforting potato-topped pie

A cheese, potato and leek pie on a timber table

A flavour-packed pie is the best comfort food after a long day, and this potato-topped dish is exactly what you’ll need after the havoc of Christmas. Steve Cumper’s recipe does call for chicken thighs, so you’ll just need to skip the first step, swapping the chicken for ham.

A classic ham and egg pie

Is there a better pairing than bacon or ham and eggs? If you believe Country Style’s resident chef, Steve Cumper, then no there’s not. This simple pie recipe uses frozen pastry, your leftover ham, cream and eggs and takes only a few minutes in the oven. But again, this recipe originally called for bacon, so you should swap it out for ham.

An indulgent stuffed filo pastry (BYO ham!)

This delicious filo recipe allows stuffing to have its moment in the sun. You can also add as many or as few ingredients as you prefer, either way, the method remains similar. Just make sure to use ham where it asks for bacon.

A flavoursome French-style leek and ham tart

Leek flamiche

Who doesn’t love a leek and onion tart? While this recipe by Annie Smithers’ is vegetarian, you should add ham as your protein, and you can always use store-bought puff pastry instead of homemade dough if that’s what you have on hand.

A classic caramelised onion and tomato quiche (just add ham)

This baked egg dish is a favourite for a reason, and all it needs is a little bit of Christmas magic: ham. Flavoured with caramelised onions – which aren’t as tricky as you might think to make – and a tomato-egg base, it’s a simple recipe that won’t make you pull your hair out.

This glamourous family residence was conceived as an ode to a high-end fashion store https://www.homestolove.com.au/home-tours/bellevue-hill-georgian-home-carla-barton/ Tue, 18 Nov 2025 22:44:17 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/?p=1293284 To illustrate the desired brief, Carla Barton’s client took the interior designer to Dior

The post This glamourous family residence was conceived as an ode to a high-end fashion store appeared first on Homes To Love.

To illustrate the desired aesthetic for her new home, Carla Barton’s client took the interior designer to the Dior boutique in Sydney’s CBD. “Dior is her favourite fashion house,” Carla explains, “and she wanted her home to convey some of the same sophistication and softness that Dior so elegantly portrays.”

“I wanted a Parisian look,” affirms the owner, “with high ceilings and detailing but with a modern take.” The home in Sydney’s eastern suburbs is a new build with seven bedrooms and five-and-a-half bathrooms constructed in the Georgian style. Spread over three levels on a large block of land with a pool and two-car garage, it is home to a family that includes four young children and two live-in nannies, as well as providing accommodation for grandparents who visit from overseas. “Most of the time, the house is occupied by a large family group of 10 people,” says Carla.

The couple had purchased the dated house in 2019, always intending to demolish it and build anew. However, Covid and delays with planning approvals meant that the work didn’t begin until 2022. Though the brief to the designer was initially for a traditional-style house, gradually the concept took on a more contemporary slant. While he leaned towards the enduring elegance of traditional architecture and the timeless charm of clawfoot baths and crystal chandeliers, she gravitated towards a more experimental and playful aesthetic. “The result is a stunning fusion of classic forms and youthful modern elements, creating an intriguing home that beautifully tells both their stories,” says Carla.

On a north-facing block, the property is blessed with wonderful natural light, amplified by Carla incorporating light whites and soft pastel shades, flowing sheer curtains and well-planned furniture layouts. “It’s a soft glamour that melts together, slowly introducing the elements rather than them being in your face,” she says. “It’s a little traditional, but not in an old way – it feels like a young family lives here.”

That’s not to say there are no bold features. In the basement powder room, the ‘Safari Vibe’ wallpaper by Emile & Chen makes a strong statement backdropping the agate-stone vanity and unusual pond basin from Rocky Mountain Hardware, while the brass archway heralding the family room is a detail that the owner – and all her friends – especially love. “It’s a real talking point,” she says, “and even the feng-shui expert was impressed! It’s a great example of a traditional element with modern detailing, one of many such pairings in the house.”

However, the owner’s favourite space is the formal sitting room, where a sense of quiet luxury prevails, care of beautiful fabrics by the likes of Rubelli, Kravet and Calvin Klein, wall and ceiling panelling and sophisticated muted shades. Carla remarks, “It’s a mix of American-style traditional elements and proportions overlaid with a French femininity and softness.”

The room features an array of international accoutrements, such as the hand-carved marble mantelpiece sourced from Lamberty in London, paired with a firescreen embellished with ginkgo leaves by Texas-based Claire Crowe. Its swivel armchairs are from Dmitriy & Co in the US while the coffee table is from Tom Faulkner in London. R&Y Augousti in Paris supplied the shagreen and brass side tables and mirror, and the chandelier hails from US retailer Horchow. “We love to gather here with friends and have a glass of wine before dinner in front of the fireplace,” says the owner. “Even the kids like to come in and play.”

The children also play in the expansive rumpus room and each has a bedroom that’s been lovingly detailed, taking into consideration their personality and interests. Carla says she was able to use colour in these rooms to contrast with the muted tones in the rest of the house, specifying four-poster beds and custom canopies in zesty colours and patterns for the girls, with Tappeti rugs and Visual Comfort & Co lamps in all four of the rooms. “The children love their bedrooms,” says the owner, “so much so that when we go away they become quite homesick for them.”

Every space in the house is in constant use. The library does double duty as a formal dining room and home office. Furnished with a long custom table featuring power outlets hidden in the centre panel and a computer workstation concealed in a custom inlaid straw marquetry cabinet, it is also where the children do their homework or sit and read books. And for special dining occasions, the butler’s pantry that opens directly into the room is perfect for serving guests.

“I really love the house as a whole,” says the enraptured client. “It’s a great balance between traditional and modern, and so cohesive throughout. Carla’s aesthetic fits very well with mine, so she was absolutely the right designer for us.”

What the new wave of vegetable-led styling says about our appetite for imperfection https://www.homestolove.com.au/decorating/trends/vegetable-styling-trend-interiors/ Tue, 18 Nov 2025 04:50:11 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/?p=1295654 A closer look at the stylists, designers and creators leading the trend

The post What the new wave of vegetable-led styling says about our appetite for imperfection appeared first on Homes To Love.

]]>
It is likely you have seen a photo of an heirloom tomato and someone’s offhand comment about it being Loewe-coded. The irony of a seasonal vegetable becoming synonymous with a high-end fashion label was perhaps never something any of us had the foresight – or imagination – to anticipate, but the ubiquitous trend of fruit and vegetables as styling props have captured the attention of the zeitgeist, stylists and, apparently, revered fashion houses.

Taking inspiration from the allotment, the vegetable styling trend answers a craving for realism and offers an immediacy that manufactured objects can’t. Fresh produce can soften the rigidity of a set and give it the lived-in quality that contemporary styling leans towards. The romanticism of using fresh produce is a nod to the idea that the everyday can be visually compelling. Additionally, its rise coincides with a shift away from the predictability of florals or foliage. In a digital age defined by polish, we are drawn to imperfection – and seemingly, vegetables.

Le Valérie Jacquemus handbag launch with a shop front with white scalloped awning, glass window with crate of fruit and clothes and greenery
Image: @jacquemus

Part of its momentum comes from a broader shift in how we respond to images. After years of hyper-curated visuals, there is a growing desire for something that feels unvarnished. Vegetables meet that mood: their shapes are never identical, their colours fluctuate with the season and their flaws read as character rather than fault.

The stylists, designers and creators leading the trend

Recently, Jacquemus launched the “Le Valérie” handbag with an immersive activation that alchemised the Paris and New York stores into markets, where the latest bag launch was displayed against crates of seasonal produce – oranges, lemons, onions – and immaculately folded attire and accessories. The activation could be seen from the storefront, where a white scalloped awning added to the organic styling ideas. This is not the first time we have seen seasonal produce styled by the masters of marketing. Earlier this year, the Jacquemus team launched a new collection of emblems and accessories, and advertised it by having children dress up as said charms in the spirit of Halloween. Or, when the French brand tapped White Lotus actor Jon Gries for a campaign that saw the actor reclining on a banana-yellow car and driving around a cart full of bananas.

Image: Jacquemus

Moreover, Revered stylist Steve Cordony recently took to the trend, hosting a masterclass for homewares brand Castlery in Brisbane and Sydney, where he demonstrated natural tabletop styling for this festive season using the latest range from the beloved brand. Asparagus was arranged in vases, while cabbage, papaya, mushrooms and shallots could be found in abundance.

Loewe campaign with man in blue shirt, a green bag, oranges and papaya sitting on the floor
Image: Loewe

Arguably the original adopter of the vegetable styling trend was none other than Loewe. And it didn’t stop at using the garden for styling props, but extended to translating those frivolous shapes into couture and scents for candles and home sprays. For example, the FW22 collection saw models slouched over oversized fake pumpkins and nursing inflated apples, with staging designed by Anthea Hamilton. Led under the tutelage of Jonathan Anderson, we wonder if we will be seeing the same appetite for the allotment at Dior, now the beloved creative director has jumped ship?

Get the look

On the the hand, brands such as Nonna Grocer and Maison Balzac have built their look around fruit and vegetables, rather than solely confining them to styling props. The Nonna Grocer candles take the shape of realistic avocados and oranges, while the objects from Maison Balzac are studded with ornaments inspired by food, such as plump green olives.

I tested three viral spot cleaners — and my favourite is now on sale https://www.homestolove.com.au/lifestyle/cleaning/bissell-spot-clean-25197/ Tue, 18 Nov 2025 04:43:11 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/bissell-spot-clean-25197 I put the three to the test, and one definitely fell flat...

The post I tested three viral spot cleaners — and my favourite is now on sale appeared first on Homes To Love.

A spot cleaner can be a real game changer when it comes to lounges, carpets and other areas of the house. But prices and quality can vary wildly, so I was keen to put three popular options to the test: the Bissell SpotClean, Kmart’s “dupe” Anko Spot Cleaner (also sold at Target), and the Shark StainStriker.

Let me start by divulging this vital information: I have a puppy and a husband. He’s a tradie (the latter, obviously) meaning he comes home in dust-ridden clothes and settles on our sofa in them, usually arriving before I’m there to tell him not to. Sometimes, he even rolls around on it with the aforementioned puppy, who is also guilty of bringing the odd goat horn, bully stick or leaf pile up there with him. Yes, all on our beautiful, fairly expensive, light greige sofa.

Explore our cleaning guides below:

It recently came to my attention that after much puppy/husband activity, our sofa was not so beautiful, or even so light-greige anymore. Admittedly, I am guilty of the occasional Sunday night meal on the sofa in front of the TV – a forbidden pleasure never permitted to me as a child – so perhaps the two boys in my household are not solely to blame. Alas, I have been looking forlornly at our sofa and all of its dirt spots for many months now and wondering what can be done.

Enter the carpet and upholstery spot cleanr; a magical tool that simultaneously soap-washes your fabrics while sucking up all the gross stuff. Keep scrolling to read my review on these viral spot cleaners.

Best spot cleaner roundup

What is the best spot cleaner?

In the Australian market, there are three front runners: the Bissell Spot Clean, Shark StainStriker, and the (viral) Anko — Kmart and Target — spot cleaner. In what was some form of divine intervention, I was lent all three to put to the test and, aside from getting a very clean sofa at the end, here’s my review of how it all went down (as well as a bit about each spot cleaner).

It retails for $269 and comes with various tools, brushes, and sample-size formulas. It’s designed to be totally portable – enough to fit in and be manoeuvred around a car – and exactly the correct dimensions to sit on a (carpeted) stair tread.

Anko spot cleaner

$99 at Target

A much cheaper alternative, Anko’s version retails for just $99, a feature that saw it go viral and quickly sell out when it was first released in Kmart and Target.

Like the Bissell model I reviewed, the Anko spot cleaner comes with the unit and various accessories and attachments, including a vertical nozzle, vacuum floor heads an attached scrub brush, and even dog brushes, so you can use it to wash your four-legged friend. Dimensions-wise it is very similar to the Bissell and comes in at much the same weight.

Sizes: 30.7cm H x 29.2cm W x 15.2cm D

Key features:

 • 3-metre power cord

 • Maximum water temperature 40 degrees
 • 12-month manufacturer’s warranty

The Shark StainStriker

Shark StainStriker spot cleaner.

Shark StainStriker portable carpet and upholstery cleaner

$249.99 at Amazon

Cult cleaning brand Shark has also made an impression with their upholstery spot cleaner: the StainStriker. And with a name like that, how could I not try it out?

The Shark StainStriker spot cleaner comes with an integrated crevice tool (love that), as well as a stain tool, wide stain tool, pet tool (for cleaning up stains with…um…solids?), a bottle of Carpet Xpert Deep Clean Pro, and one of OxyMultiplier. The cord length sits in between Anko and Bissell at 3.6 metres, and boasts a nice and compact design that comes in at just a little above the others.

Weight: 3.943kg

Sizes: 30cm H x 30cm W x 26cm D

Key features:

 • 3.6-metre cord
 • Dual-activated stain removal

Bissell SpotClean vs Anko Spot Cleaner vs Shark StainStriker: which is better?

To be honest, on an operational level, the differences between the Bissell SpotClean, Anko spot cleaner, and Shark StainStriker are fairly minimal and come down to four things: the brush sizes, the cord length, the spray function, and the cost. However, there was one final factor that would later come into play: the product’s lifespan. But more on that below.

Brush size

While Anko’s model comes with more tools, Bissell’s ‘equivalent’ tool (i.e. the one with the scrubbing-brush-like head) is slightly larger in size. For a sofa, this didn’t bother me much, but if a carpet or even a rug were the husband-and-puppy victim, I would probably prefer Bissell’s larger attachment. I will also say that Anko’s accessories were difficult to swap out and I almost broke a nail several times. Neither issue was a concern at all with the Shark StainStriker, which comes with both a regular and wide brush, which may even prove enough to motivate me to tackle our bedroom carpet one day… Plus, I love Shark’s pet tool, which has a chamber to capture all the solid-ish yuck should an ‘accident’ occur.

Cord length

Again, a fairly minimal detail, but considering I live in a circa 1970s-ish apartment where power outlets are few and far between, this is a consideration I would be forced to make. Bissell’s cord was the longest at 4.5 metres, followed by Shark’s 3.6 metres, then Anko’s 3 metres. At first, I didn’t think this would be too much of a problem, despite having to create a hazard across our kitchen doorway with the cord, but I really noticed the difference. For me, Bissell wins out here: the more cord, the merrier. It also meant I had the extra wiggle (or spray) room needed without having to twist the machine at awkward angles or hold it while I worked (none of them are light).

The spray function

All three machines work by spraying soapy water onto your sofa/carpet/rug/car seat and sucking it back up as you scrub. This means that no matter which you use, you’ll end up with a slightly damp surface for a few hours. However, Anko’s spray function is noticeably strong and soaks through more, which could be a con for those who have poor ventilation (and therefore drying ability), or kids/pets who are unlikely to be able to keep off while the freshly washed item dries.

The cost

This is by far the biggest draw card for Anko — with an almost identical result it would be hard to say no to $150+ in savings.

The product’s lifespan

Last but most importantly, which of these products lasts the distance? It’s all well and good to clean up a cheeky pasta sauce spill here or a dirty dog pawprint there, but I need this thing to put in the hours without breaking a sweat…or just breaking. Which, unfortunately, the Anko model would eventually do. Twice.

Yes, it’s true. I cannot recommend an Anko Spot Cleaner. Many reviewers have had excellent experiences with theirs, but sadly my first one had a trigger malfunction, and its replacement suffered the same fate, at no fault of my own might I add.

If you’ve bought into the white boucle trend, you’re going to want to read on. (Photo: Kmart)

The verdict: is it worth getting a spot cleaner?

For me, it is a resounding yes. As annoying as they are, puppy and husband are not going anywhere and have proven they can only be tamed so much. So for my household, a spot cleaner is a literal miracle in small appliance form.

I can confidently say that both the Bissell SpotClean and the Shark StainStriker would be equally great choices. As mentioned, I was let down by Anko’s spot cleaner but I thoroughly enjoyed it up until then, and many have nothing but shining reviews for it – plus, the cost is hard to say no to!

What about other brands?

This review focuses on the three spot cleaners I got to test out from Bissell, Shark and Anko (Kmart or Target). But if you want to shop around more, here are some other spot cleaners on the market in Australia that have stood out to us.

Vax Platinum SpotWasher
(VACSC21E) is a top-selling spot cleaner.

Vax Platinum Spot Wash cleaner

$298.95 at Amazon

This spot cleaner combines powerful suction and deep cleaning to remove spills and stains on carpet, upholstery, car interiors and even hardwood floors. It has an average rating of 4.5 stars from over 320 reviews on The Good Guys website, where it’s also listed as a “Top Seller”.

“Honestly it exceeded my expectations. I purchased in preparation for a baby on the way [in a] carpeted house however, I have already used it on car seats, carpet spots, an armchair and more,” one customer shared in a detailed 5-star review, adding, “I suggest using only a drop of the soap provided because otherwise it’s a soapy mess and more work to try and remove. Sometimes I use it without soap too for fresh spills. Would recommend.”

Weight: 3.9kg

Sizes: 42.5cm H x 26.5cm W x 39.5cm D

Colour: Red

Key features:

 • 4.5-metre cord
 • 1.5-metre hose with self-cleaning function

Karcher SE 3-18 Ultra Clean Compact Cordless Spot Cleaner.

Karcher SE 3-18 cordless spot cleaner

$408.18 at Amazon

Karcher is another brand that has garnered interest for its spot cleaners. It only had a handful of reviews on The Good Guys, but they were all 4- or 5-stars when we checked and it has a 4.7-star average from over 60 customer reviews on the Karcher website, where one customer even said it was “better than my old Bissell”.

As a further comparison to the Bissell spot cleaner we tested, this is a cordless model with a long 1.9m hose, and has a larger water tank capacity (1.7L fresh and 2.9L dirty). So you could weigh that up against the price.

Weight: 3.64kg

Sizes: 31.7cm H x 24cm W x 35cm D

Key features:

 • Cordless operation with 18V battery and a fast charger included

Get ready, because the epic second instalment of Wicked is almost here. Set to hit screens on Thursday, Wicked: For Good will bring fans the same star-studded cast, big musical numbers and jaw-dropping sets that earned the film a whopping $250 million at the box office, two Academy Awards and the title of most successful Broadway film adaptation of all time.

Directed by Jon M. Chu and starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, the cinematic retelling of the hit musical wows in every aspect, but particularly in terms of its set design and world-building. In the first film, Chu introduces us to a breathtakingly grand and enchanting Oz, with soaring ceilings and curvaceous architecture; the same Oz that was created from an approximately $230 million budget.

Here, we take a look at the creation of Oz, from film locations to the film’s production designer, and marvel at Wicked‘s incredible set design.

Where were Wicked and Wicked: For Good filmed?

The magical world of Oz was largely created within Sky Studios Elstree in Hertfordshire, London, which is also where the upcoming Wuthering Heights movie was filmed. In creating the grandiose world of Oz, production took over all of Sky Studios’ 13 sound stages, as well as another six at the nearby Leavesden Studios – where all the Harry Potter movies were filmed – according to Radio Times. A further three back lots were also built to create exterior sets, with their construction taking up to five months.

Other film locations include the small English village of Ivinghoe, where Munchkinland was created, as well as a nursery in Norfolk, where nine million tulips were planted for Munchkinland.

Who designed the sets of Wicked and Wicked: For Good?

British production designer Nathan Crowley designed the jaw-dropping sets of Wicked and Wicked: For Good, and cited Wicked as easily the largest film he’s ever worked on. And, as impossibly grand as Oz appears in the film, the set was created, mostly, without CGI.

All in all, the creation of Oz took around six to seven months and a crew of around 1000 people, with the film’s sets spanning 19 sound stages and three giant back lots.

Crowley, who was behind the set design of The Dark Knight and Interstellar, imbued Oz with Americana-style retro-futurism in the form of colossal animatronics and curvaceous details, as exemplified by the 32-tonne steamer train, the Emerald City Express.

“The Wizard of Oz is an American fairy tale, so you need America in it,” he told Radio Times. “A big train in an endless Midwestern barley field is a very American image, so then I was in the business of growing barley as well!”

Wicked: For Good is set to be released on Thursday, November 20, here in Australia, although some cinemas are offering advance screenings on Wednesday, November 19.

Nestled in Sydney’s Northern Beaches, this 1910s sandstone cottage is a masterclass in restored heritage charm. The owners, a professional couple with two young daughters, made the move from a steep block in nearby Whale Beach to this more level, greenery-wrapped property in 2024.

While their former home boasted sweeping views, it was the connection between house and garden that drew them here. But despite the appeal, the house was dated and in need of attention.

Enter interior designer Alexandra Mason of Studio aem, who the family brought on board to infuse the home with warmth and convenience. “The family is creative and the girls love their art and craft,” says Alexandra. “They needed a home that could allow self-expression without having to be too precious.”

Their brief was clear: preserve the soul of the home but improve its liveability. Along with more kitchen and pantry space, they were after “hardy and durable”.

A raked ceiling and sandstone walls were carefully restored, respecting the home’s heritage. An earthy palette with leather and timber is reflected in the owners’ existing furniture selection, including an Arthur G sofa and Vitra ‘Noguchi’ coffee table. To expand the kitchen, the designer began by demolishing an adjoining poky bathroom.

“Upon removing the ceiling, we discovered the opportunity to follow the existing gabled roofline and introduce a dramatic sense of height.”

What began as a relatively modest update of the kitchen and bathrooms soon evolved into a full restoration. “Due to the age and period of the house, it became clear that a more detailed, sensitive approach was needed to honour the home’s history,” says Alexandra.

To make the home more functional, walls were reconfigured to create better flow and more storage. A dark, central part of the house was opened up with raked ceilings and a new skylight.

“Revealing all the rendered sandstone was a treat… the result was exceptional.”

Looking to highlight original features, Alexandra removed dated render and paint from walls to reveal and restore original stonework, enhanced timber-framed windows with deep sandstone sills and preserved floorboards. Any new materials added were in keeping with the owners’ desire for “earthy, natural tones with a slightly rustic character”.

Layering in some of that character in the kitchen, she installed timber beams to the ceiling and specified a textured microcement rangehood with decorative mouldings, an AGA olive green cooker, honed Austral Dream dolomite benchtops and aged-metal hardware.

At the end of the kitchen sits the owners’ favourite feature: an eat-in dining nook. Framed by a large picture window, it has become an inviting space for family meals with views over the tropical front garden and glimpses of Pittwater.

Four bedrooms, an ensuite, laundry and storeroom complete the floorplan – but the standout is the generous family bathroom. Once a compact ensuite, it now offers all the ambience of a wellness retreat at home. Sandstone, travertine and terracotta add layers of warmth and texture, with a copper bath a star feature.

“I am in love with all aspects of the house, but I have particularly taken to the terracotta flooring in the bathroom and the freestanding bath,” says Alexandra. THIS IS THE LIFE

A connection to nature was an important theme. “The owners love how the design integrates the outdoors, particularly the side garden and the flow between interior and exterior spaces, creating a serene, harmonious environment,” says Alexandra. “These thoughtful choices and features express their vision of a peaceful, character-rich family home.”

From chiselled-in brass power outlet covers to hand-reinstated sandstone on the rebuilt front verandah, every detail of this nature-immersed family home has been considered. “This was a true labour of love,” says Alexandra.

“The owners were open, trusting and deeply appreciative of the process. They said ‘yes’ more than they questioned – and that made all the difference.”

The lush garden surrounding the cottage was a major drawcard for the family of four when they first inspected the home. Roof painted to match Dulux Duralloy Olde Pewter. Weatherboard painted Porter’s Paints Flagstone. (Photography: Prue Ruscoe | Styling: Olga Lewis)
