The Sir George is both a beloved country pub and luxury accommodation

Stylish accommodation and delicious food has drawn visitors from far and wide to the small village of Jugiong, NSW.

Before the Hume Freeway bypassed the small village of Jugiong in 1995, it was one of many customary pit stops for weary travellers making the long journey between Sydney and Melbourne. With little more than a pub and a church, drivers would hop out, stretch their legs and grab a coffee before quickly making their way back to the car and hitting the road.

Since then, Jugiong has slowly grown from a sleepy settlement to a thriving farm-to-table, slow-food destination. These days, when travellers turn off the Hume and onto Jugiong Road, it’s entirely on purpose. Many don’t want to leave.

Jugiong (which was originally inhabited by the people of the Ngunawal Aboriginal language group) may have a population of less than 300, but the community is thriving with locals and newcomers alike establishing eateries and stylish boutique accommodation purely out of their own passion for true, country hospitality.

The Sir George is one such establishment, which was extensively restored in 2015. The historic pub was recently sold by CBRE Hotels to an investor for $14 million.

During The Sir George’s recent renovations, no detail was overlooked. The former horse stables, constructed in the 1800s from solid stone by Irish stonemasons, have been expertly restored and converted into a trio of cosy and stylish boutique hotel rooms.

But if spending a night or two in a stone-encased paradise isn’t your thing, there are a series of black, pitched-roof cabins available too. Overlooking a garden planted with silver birch trees, the roof lines of the stunning cabins were inspired by a historic photograph of the Sir George taken in the late 1800s.
