Are comfortable sofa beds a thing?

It goes without saying that comfort is a key consideration, but make sure you’re thinking about it in both configurations – sofa and bed. If the sofa will be in frequent use as a lounge and only called on a few times a year for guests, then it makes sense to focus on seating comfort.

If you’re anticipating lots of guests, and especially if they’re adults, make sure the bed is comfortable to sleep on. That means either testing it in a store, or at home once your chosen sofa bed is delivered. Make sure you also test the mechanism – it should be smooth and easy to operate.

“The experience with most sofa beds is generally pretty uncomfortable – you hit a middle bar in the middle of the night for example,” says Koala’s product designer Adam Harrigan. He advises looking for designs that have “multiple layers for optimal comfort and support” whether they’re being used as a sofa, or as a bed.

If you’re ordering a sofa bed online, it’s also a good idea to check the return policy. Some brands, including Koala and Eva, offer free trials and returns that make it easy to order the sofa bed, test it out for a while and then decide if it’s right.

How do I choose a good sofa bed?

Sleeper sofas come in several styles, each with pros and cons.

“Just like a bed, the size, mattress, and mechanics are personal and you need to ensure that the functionality and style suit your individual needs,” advises Rune.

The simplest is a click-clack style, where the back of the seat folds back to create a flat bed. It’s a pretty basic form of sofa, often without arms, but very easy to use.

In stacked styles, like Koala’s award-winning sofa beds, the seat cushion itself unfolds to become the mattress. There’s no extra folding mechanism required, which keeps the weight down, but the seat can be fairly firm, and possibly less comfortable for sitting.

Some modular sofas can simply be reconfigured, using long chaise and ottoman sections to form a large bed, jigsaw puzzle style.

For the traditional fold-out styles, the metal folding mechanism, frame, and mattress (usually foam) are underneath the seat cushion, and you’ll need to lift and pull it out to set up the bed.

On the plus side, it’s indistinguishable from a standard sofa, but it’s also likely to be significantly heavier and possibly more expensive.

Size, flexibility, and use of space

A dedicated spare room could do double duty as a study or kids’ playroom when you don’t have guests. Conversely, think about adding a sleeper sofa to your study or playroom so that it can step up to fill in a spare room when required.

Another factor to consider is extra storage. “For small spaces, it’s worth considering a sofa bed with added storage, so you can store bedlinen and towels for guests in the same spot,” says Rune. “Daybeds are also a great alternative to a traditional sofa bed, and may also include drawers beneath.”

Sofa beds are available in sizes from single to king, depending on the style. Make sure you measure the space where it will go, and remember to measure out the fully extended size. Try to leave at least 60cm clearance at the end and sides of the bed so your guests can easily navigate the space.

6 simple ways to keep your bedroom cool (without aircon) this summer

There’s so much to love about summer; longer days, balmy nights, ocean swims and seaside getaways. But soaring temperatures and high humidity rarely create ideal sleeping conditions – especially if you don’t have air-conditioning in your bedroom.

The good news is there are some simple, effective steps you can take to keep your bedroom cool, even during the muggiest heat waves – below are six of our favourite.

How to keep a bedroom cool in hot weather

1. Get the air moving

Ventilation is the best way to stay cool during the long, hot summer months. If you’re a sleep-with-the-door-shut type of person, you may want to adjust slightly. Any potential for crosswind airflow is curtailed when you have your doors and windows closed. So open up the windows, including those just outside your bedroom, as well as your bedroom door, to eliminate hot air and get the breeze circulating.

Amp up your crosswind airflow with a portable electric fan, or ceiling mounted option. Both types of fans will ensure you always have air-flow, even when there isn’t a breeze blowing outside. Place a shallow bowl or pan of frozen water in front of a pedestal fan so the circulating air picks up the cold water from the ice as it melts; creating a cool mist that offers as much relief as air conditioning.

Another hack is to position fans at cross angles, directed towards windows so you push hot air out. If you have a ceiling fan, reverse the setting so instead of blowing downwards, it sucks hot air upwards.

2. Invest in the right mattress

In general, having a comfortable bed is conducive for quality sleep, but you might not be aware that your mattress could affect how sweaty you get at night.

First off, if your mattress is more than eight years old, it’s probably time for an upgrade as sweat and bacteria build up in the fibres over the years. Prior to purchasing a new mattress there are a few things to consider when it comes to keeping you cool.

Firstly, not all mattresses are created equal and out of the four types available on the market traditional inner springs are known to offer the best air circulation due the space between the coils. However, newer bedding materials are challenging the status quo. For instance, Australian brand Koala, which has developed a foam mattress that’s made specifically for our hot climate. It’s created from a breathable material called kloudcell which allows air-circulation meaning less sweaty nights. Koala’s moisture-absorbing Tencel cover is also removable and can be thrown straight into the wash so your bed stays fresh.

3. Choose a new pillow

Experts agree the ideal temperature range for a good night’s sleep is 15 to 22 degrees Celsius, but we all know during the hot Aussie summer overnight temperatures can linger in the high 20s to 30s. Flipping your pillow to the cool side will be an all-too-familiar practice for most of us, but a pillow made from specifically cooling materials, such as gel-infused memory foam, ventilated latex, shredded foam, and down alternatives, offer increased support and airflow. Phase-change fabrics (PCMs), graphite or copper infusions, and engineered airflow channels are innovations that work to regulate temperature throughout the night, keeping you cooler for longer.

4. Switch up your sheets

Bed linen makes a huge difference to your comfort throughout the night. In the same way that clothing made of breathable fibres keeps you cool during the day, sheets made of fabrics like linen, bamboo and cotton will ensure you stay cool and dry throughout the night.

Bamboo is a highly breathable and moisture-wicking fabric that has a soft, silky texture that feels cool to the touch. Linen, although more expensive, is super breathable thanks to its loosely woven fibres. Both bamboo and linen are also eco-friendly and kind to your skin – especially these summer-ready sets.

There’s nothing revolutionary about cotton sheets, but they are a great option for summer as they are breathable, moisture-wicking, hypo allergenic, durable and easy to launder. Remember to always read the label on your bed linen of choice, whether cotton, linen or bamboo, as sometimes those natural fibres will be mixed with microfiber or polyester – which is going turn up the heat!

5. Lay low and block out windows

Hot air rises so the lower you are to the ground, the cooler you will be. If you live in a two-storey house with a guest bedroom on the ground floor, consider spending the night there.

If you don’t have the luxury of an extra room, you can still ensure your room stays cool. Sunlight entering through windows during the day will cause the temperature in your bedroom to rise dramatically. Although it can feel a little dark and gloomy, keeping the curtains or blinds closed throughout the day will stop this from happening.

6. Unplug devices and swap out lightbulbs

It’s all about the one percenters when you’re trying to keep your bedroom cool without the luxury of air-conditioning.

Leaving your phone, computer and anything else electrical unplugged and out of the room will keep your room slightly cooler, as all electrical devices radiate some warmth. Traditional incandescent bulbs also emit excess energy in the form of heat, switch to energy-efficient LEDs, which are cool to the touch, will keep temps down and save you a small fortune in power costs.

I’m not usually one to splurge on big-ticket items, especially not online. While I absolutely love a good impulse buy as much as the next person, when it comes to something large, significant, and borderline life-altering (like, say, a bed frame), I hesitate. What if it doesn’t fit? What if I hate it? What even is the return policy?

Anyone who knows me knows I’m a notoriously bad sleeper. So naturally, I’ve tried just about everything in the name of better sleep: from cooling pillows and silk eye masks to sunrise alarm clocks and magnesium sprays. But I’d never really considered how much the bed frame itself might matter… until I came across the SD Indestruct Bed from Australian online retailer Sleeping Duck.

Launched in 2022, the SD Indestruct Bed is a customisable frame that claims to improve sleep by providing unwavering support for your mattress, essentially acting as the structural backbone of a good night’s sleep. What’s so special about the SD Indestruct Bed?

If you’re anything like me who is easily swayed by inspirational, soft-lit editorials that convince you that yes, your home can look like this by clicking add to cart, then the SD Indestruct Bed product page might not win you over at first glance. Oh the choices!

Sleeping Duck is all about customisation. Much like their SD Mach II mattress, their bed frames can be tailored to suit both your interior style and personal sleep preferences.

For this review, I chose the Baker Indestruct Bed in Modern European Oak. There are four timber headboard finishes to choose from: European Ash, European Oak, American Walnut, and Carbon Oak, plus a selection of upholstered and headboard-free options for those with different aesthetic leanings.

You can also choose between standard (15cm) or tall (20cm) legs for an additional $100. Since we paired it with the Sleeping Duck mattress, which already has a fair amount of height to it, the shorter legs felt more than sufficient. Each leg is height adjustable by up to five centimetres, and finishes range from classic timber to mirror-like chrome and a brass-toned copper. I opted for the oak legs to create a tonal look.

It’s been several months sleeping on the SD Indestruct Bed, and I have to say, it’s been absolute bliss. The bed frame lives up to its name: it’s solid, and there’s no movement or creaking when getting in and out of bed. I’m a restless sleeper, and didn’t feel the bed move under me when shifting positions at night.

Assembly-wise, the Premium Plus service made setup stress-free. The delivery men were also lovely, and kindly moved the bed to another wall when they recognised it might be too large for my room. For something that weighs close to 115kg (for a Queen) and arrives in multiple boxes, having professionals put it together is worth the added cost. That said, the actual assembly process didn’t seem overly complicated and could surely be done by two people if you decide to move.

The timber frame fits beautifully into my space. It’s warm and inviting, providing a sturdy anchor for my ever-changing design tastes to play around.

Final verdict

The verdict is in: the SD Indestruct Bed is absolutely worth it. While it sits at the premium end of the spectrum, this big-ticket piece is both chic and timeless, and, more importantly, it’s built to last.

As a renter, I’ll admit I’m slightly apprehensive about what moving day will bring. I already know I’ll need at least two or three extra sets of hands to get this bed to its next destination. However, if you’re looking for your forever bed, and I truly mean forever, then this bed is the perfect choice. Trust that you’ll never need to look at another bed again!

Best silk sheets

Last but certainly not least are silk sheets, or more commonly available, silk pillowcases. Known for being unbeatably soft (which is why many hair and beauty gurus love it), silk is breathable, hypoallergenic, and temperature regulating – it’s both cool in summer and warm in winter. In fact, silk is even more insulating than Egyptian cotton. Two main types of silk sheets are available: tussah silk and cultivated mulberry silk, with the latter being the highest quality.

The cons of silk bedding are centred mostly around the higher price point. It is also prone to stains and requires special care (read: it’s probably not the best pick for your five-year-old’s bed!). While many love their incredible softness, for some, silk bed sheets will prove just that little bit *too* slippery.

FYI, silk sheets are often described as having a ‘momme’ measure. Momme is a is a traditional Japanese unit of measurement that considers the weight and density of silk fabric and is sometimes abbreviated as ‘mm’. Essentially, the higher the momme, the more silk is used per square inch.

Any experienced host will know that an elevated guest bedroom goes far beyond a set of clean sheets and a throw. From the lighting to the scentscape, a stylish and considered guest bedroom can make your guests feel comfortable and at ease, which is the ultimate goal when playing hotel manager.

To help you create a luxurious experience for family or friends coming to stay, we asked two interior designers for their top guest bedroom essentials and styling tips. Happy hosting!

1. Choose the right bed linen

Comfort is the top priority in creating a guest bedroom, according to interior designer Jono Fleming. “It starts with the bed, of course, but goes beyond just having fresh sheets. Make sure you include both a firm and a soft pillow so your guests can choose what suits them best. Everyone sleeps differently, and a little detail like that makes a big difference.”

Creating layers is another way to make your guests feel cosy and comfortable. “A lightweight quilt is a good base, while an open-weave throw can be used as a cover if the temperature soars and the quilt ends up on the floor! Adding a throw is also an affordable way to update your room and add a burst of colour and texture,” says interior designer James Treble.

2. Add storage space

Storage is another important factor to consider, especially when you have guests staying for more than a night or two. “Living out of a wardrobe is much nicer than pulling clothes from a suitcase so, if you can, provide hanging space,” James suggests.

“If you don’t have an existing wardrobe then a foldaway or open hanger is a cost-effective solution. Drawers are perfect for folded clothes and personal items and provide surface space for phones, makeup and jewellery.”

Jono agrees: “Even in smaller spaces, a bench at the end of the bed or a small surface where guests can drop their bags helps them feel settled. If you can, include a mirror and a few spare hangers too. It shows that you’ve thought about what your guests might actually need, not just how the room looks.”

3. Consider the little things

When it comes to making your house guests feel welcome, it’s the little things that count. To make your guest bedroom feel more cosy and welcoming, consider:

Including a range of teas or a special packet of biscuits – it’s thoughtful and affordable.

If you have space, adding an armchair in the guestroom is a nice extra – to place clothes on or for a quiet read.

Fresh flowers; they add fragrance and colour to the bedroom, and even better if they’re a favourite variety.

Including a bedside lamp or a floor lamp in the corner of the room adds a welcoming and relaxing light.
Serving guests a bottle of wine, liqueur or cocktail they love will make them feel very at home and special.
Placing a carafe of water on the bedside table, in case guests get thirsty during the night.

4. Stock your bathroom

Whether your guest bedroom has an ensuite or you’re sharing your own bathroom, it’s always worth providing essential toiletries, like a spare toothbrush, toothpaste and bodywash. If you want to go the extra mile, consider adding a hand care kit to the bathroom and investing in good towels; “Egyptian cotton or high-count cotton towels make drying a pleasure,” James says.

5. Find a fresh scent

Once you’ve gotten the right bed linen, storage, toiletries and styling, add the finishing touches with a fresh scent. “A candle or a diffuser can make the space feel calm and inviting, and it’s always lovely when a particular scent reminds someone of their stay with you,” Jono says.

“Scented candles and diffusers dotted around the home, ideally in the bedroom and the bathroom, are a thoughtful touch that won’t go unnoticed,” James agrees. “Just make sure they’re not too overpowering or sickly sweet.”

While flannelette sheets are a popular choice for winter, when the warmer months roll around it’s best to stick to lighter, natural fibres that allow your body to breathe and regulate its temperature. So what is the best bed linen to sleep in during summer?

100% flax linen: Not unlike bamboo, linen is eco-friendly and kind to your skin.
100% cotton: If you’re not into the texture of bamboo or linen bedding, cotton is still a great option. However, always read the label because a lot of the time “cotton sheets” are actually combination sheets featuring microfiber and polyester.

However, according to In Bed founder Pip Vassett, the type of fabric you choose to sleep in during the summer is a very personal choice. “They say that linen breathes more in summer, and I do find it lovely to sleep in in the warmer weather. But it definitely has a little more weight to it, so in the hottest months of the year some people prefer a light cotton, as it feels like there’s barely anything on you. You just need to make sure the thread count isn’t high or it will be stifling!”

Bamboo sheets are becoming another popular choice for the summer months thanks to their smooth, silk-like texture and thermoregulating qualities.

“Bamboo lyocell is thermoregulating, which means it helps keep you warm in winter and cool in summer,” says ettitude founder Phoebe Yu. “Our signature CleanBamboo is ultra soft and lightweight on the skin and has a special ‘silk-like’ quality that makes it especially comfortable to sleep in during warmer weather.

“Last year, we sent out our bamboo lyocell to SGS for testing, who found our signature CleanBamboo textile to be ‘significantly more cooling on the skin than cotton’. It also wicks away moisture more effectively and faster than other textiles, so you feel fresh all through your sleep.”

What’s the best way to style bedding in summer?

Along with stripping back your bed linen, it’s a good idea to give your bedroom a bit of a style overhaul for the warmer months, storing away extra throws and winter decor, and creating a light and breezy summer vibe instead.

“I love a super simple bedroom for summer, sometimes opting to remove the duvet completely and just have an oversized linen top sheet that acts as a bed cover and falls to the floor along with a few pillows (definitely no fussy layered up throw pillows in summer – who can be bothered?). A simple bed with beautiful linen gives you the look of an exotic holiday location,” says Pip. “Aside from linen, I love a bit of rattan for summer – in the form of a headboard, side table, armchair, you name it!”

What colour sheets are best for summer?

The colours you use in your bedroom play a huge role in not just the look, but also the feel of the space. If you’re looking to create a cool, calm and airy retreat from the summer heat, opt for bed linen and decor in natural and neutral tones.

“Earthy colours have been huge the past couple of seasons and I believe more natural colours are still the way to go. I’m really loving blues and greens with a bit of substance to them. These tones feel very of the now and a little lighter for the summer seasons. Along with these, white and soft greys are always a hit and ideal for summer,” says Pip.

But this doesn’t mean you have to go all-beige. “Bright colours are definitely in this summer,” says Georgie Cavanagh, co-founder of Australian bedlinen brand Carlotta + Gee. Hence, the swathes of butter yellow, pastel blue, funky florals and pinstripes we’ve been seeing splashed across bedrooms recently.

What should I look out for when buying a kids’ mattress?

Firmness level: Firm or soft?

According to Gary Ginsberg, sleep expert and founder of Wowbeds, in most cases, your little ones are light enough that a firmer mattress will suit their needs instead of one that’s too soft. Opt for a medium or medium-firm mattress that will support their spinal alignment as they grow.

Size: Single vs King single

Kate Nixon is an award-winning interior designer and stylist who is passionate about finding things you love that make a home your own. In a collaboration between Belle and Fanuli, the Founder of Sydney-based interior design studio, Kate Nixon, created her dream bedroom with luxurious pieces from Fanuli.

Here, we speak to her about her bedroom design concept.

What was your inspiration and design concept for this space?

The beautiful Clapis bed from MD House inspired this serene bedroom scheme with its soft, contemporary lines and textured upholstery.

Why did you choose these Fanuli pieces?

I love the idea of mismatched bedsides, especially pairing a desk with a side table for the practicality and use of space. I chose the Riva Elle Ecrit desk and Flexform Ascanio side tables for their cohesive timber tones and timeless silhouettes.

What is your favourite piece?

I love a good accessory and Flexform’s Mate magazine caddy is such a classic, small but mighty with its steel formwork and woven leather. It exudes Italian style and quality and would be at home in any interior.

What is your top tip for creating the perfect bedroom?

For me the perfect bedroom is calm and inviting, surrounded by the things you love. Consider all the layers from area rug to wall covering, window treatment to lighting, bedding to art and accessories in a cohesive palette of tones and textures.

What is the highest quality linen?

It’s generally acknowledged that Belgian linen is of the finest quality, as is Italian linen and Belgian or French flax linen. Flax is grown in France or Belgium, which means the linen can then be sold as Belgian flax linen, no matter where it gets woven and finished.

“French Linen is the best linen you can buy,” says Carlotta from Carlotta + Gee.

“This is because of the temperature in the air which allows the flax plant to grow at its peak. It is also grown in India however due to the heat, often the flax snaps and doesn’t get to grow as long which means it isn’t as strong. Look out for the GSM which is how linen is measured.”

European-produced linen is often a safe bet, with some insisting the best weaving mills are found in Italy.

What are trending colour combinations for linen sheets?

With so many colourways available, it can be hard to choose just one. Mixing and matching different linens is a great way to create a unique look for your space.

“There are always your traditional colours such as optic white, natural and stone. We are finding the natural stripes, marine stripes or olive stripes are popular to add something fresh to people’s bedrooms. We have found, especially with Carlotta + Gee, that Olive and Tobacco have been favourites. They add such a buzz to your room. You can’t go wrong with light pink mixing with a dark grey – even the fellas like this,” expressed Carlotta.

What GSM should linen sheets be?

Consumers tend to look at thread count as the biggest indicator of quality, but this is not always the case. In fact, the thickness of linen fibres means that linen sheets are often 80 – 150 thread count, which would be seen as low for a cotton sheet.

Synthetic materials such as rayon or polyester can often feel softer at first touch – and the manufacturers will use that as a selling point – but over time the quality will decrease, whereas good flax linen will improve with age; it will soften and simultaneously become stronger the more it is washed.

Linen is typically measured in GSM, which stands for “grams per square meter” and is a measure of the density or weight of a fabric. The best linen sheets will range from 150 to 200 GSM. Linen is valued for its natural texture and breathability, and higher GSM linen sheets are often associated with more luxurious and durable options.

What is so great about linen bedding?

The first thing to look for is natural, 100 percent linen. Linen, being a natural material, lets your skin breathe, which helps to regulate your body temperature, keeping you cool in summer and warm in winter. It’s also highly absorbent, lint-free and nonallergenic.

“Linen bedding is the most natural plant you can sleep in. Being ethical and sustainable is extremely important to us. So, after researching the benefits of the flax plant which is grown in France, we knew this was the one. There isn’t one part of the plant which is wasted – the plant is grown for the bedding; the seeds are eaten and the oil off the plant is used to vanish furniture,” says Carlotta.

“Linen also becomes softer with age as it is stone-washed, which means it will last a long time. Other advantages include health benefits with the material stimulating the blood flow. And of course, the aesthetic of a room complete with linen bedding is amazing,” she adds.

Which type of mattress protector is best?

There are three main types of mattress protectors – encasement, elastic strap and fitted. There are plenty of options when it comes to arranging bunk beds within a room. A lot depends on how much space you have to work with, and any specific restrictions within the room, including windows, ceiling heights and in-built wardrobes.

For small bedrooms, it’s best to position bunk beds against a wall so that there is enough room to still move around the space. For larger spaces, positioning a bunk bed in the middle of the room makes quite the feature and also means that everyone can access their bed from the side.
