Whether it’s visiting family members, friends staying over after a party, or kids hanging out for a sleepover, a sofa bed is a flexible piece of furniture that can be called on whenever the need arises. And with Black Friday sofa bed sales hitting the market this week, now is the perfect time to get your home guest-ready.

While many of us have memories of sleeping on lumpy pull-out couches, these days the best sofa bed designs in Australia are so comfortable and stylish that you might find yourself dozing off or curling up with a good book.

There are also plenty of styles to choose from, including simple click-clack options, fold-out or “stacked” designs, and, yes, pull-out models with springs and metal frames, which have come a long way over the past couple of decades. So, how do you choose the right one for your space?

Explore our Black Friday 2025 guides below:

“Your home should reflect your lifestyle, so ask yourself how you’re going to use the space and this will determine which sofa bed is right for you,” says Rune Svendsen, IKEA home furnishing specialist. “We take the approach that every square metre in a home should be both useful and flexible.”

So, here are our top picks for sofa beds in Australia based on features including the size, how it converts to a bed, firmness, flexibility, and customer reviews – including a recommendation from one of our editors. Are comfortable sofa beds a thing?

It goes without saying that comfort is a key consideration, but make sure you’re thinking about it in both configurations – sofa and bed. If the sofa will be in frequent use as a lounge and only called on a few times a year for guests, then it makes sense to focus on seating comfort.

If you’re anticipating lots of guests, and especially if they’re adults, make sure the bed is comfortable to sleep on. That means either testing it in a store, or at home once your chosen sofa bed is delivered. Make sure you also test the mechanism – it should be smooth and easy to operate.

“The experience with most sofa beds is generally pretty uncomfortable – you hit a middle bar in the middle of the night for example,” says Koala’s product designer Adam Harrigan. He advises looking for designs that have “multiple layers for optimal comfort and support” whether they’re being used as a sofa, or as a bed.

If you’re ordering a sofa bed online, it’s also a good idea to check the return policy. Some brands, including Koala and Eva, offer free trials and returns that make it easy to order the sofa bed, test it out for a while and then decide if it’s right.

How do I choose a good sofa bed?

Sleeper sofas come in several styles, each with pros and cons.

“Just like a bed, the size, mattress, and mechanics are personal and you need to ensure that the functionality and style suit your individual needs,” advises Rune.

The simplest is a click-clack style, where the back of the seat folds back to create a flat bed. It’s a pretty basic form of sofa, often without arms, but very easy to use.

In stacked styles, like Koala’s award-winning sofa beds, the seat cushion itself unfolds to become the mattress. There’s no extra folding mechanism required, which keeps the weight down, but the seat can be fairly firm, and possibly less comfortable for sitting.

Some modular sofas can simply be reconfigured, using long chaise and ottoman sections to form a large bed, jigsaw puzzle style.

For the traditional fold-out styles, the metal folding mechanism, frame, and mattress (usually foam) are underneath the seat cushion, and you’ll need to lift and pull it out to set up the bed.

On the plus side, it’s indistinguishable from a standard sofa, but it’s also likely to be significantly heavier and possibly more expensive.

Size, flexibility, and use of space

A dedicated spare room could do double duty as a study or kids’ playroom when you don’t have guests. Conversely, think about adding a sleeper sofa to your study or playroom so that it can step up to fill in a spare room when required.

Another factor to consider is extra storage. “For small spaces, it’s worth considering a sofa bed with added storage, so you can store bedlinen and towels for guests in the same spot,” says Rune. “Daybeds are also a great alternative to a traditional sofa bed, and may also include drawers beneath.”

Sofa beds are available in sizes from single to king, depending on the style. Make sure you measure the space where it will go, and remember to measure out the fully extended size. Try to leave at least 60cm clearance at the end and sides of the bed so your guests can easily navigate the space.

A beautifully designed country-style living room is the ultimate haven. At the end of a long day, a generous sofa and a pile of soft throw cushions will beckon, encouraging you to take a moment to relax and find quiet. Whether you manage to find this moment of peace every day, however, is another thing!

The modern living room is also a family gathering space, where the pace of the day begins to slow down. To decorate it in a way that inspires you and fills you with happy memories will ensure it remains a place you enjoy spending time in for years to come, and if you just so happen to love the charming country aesthetic, we have plenty of inspiration and style tips for you.

How to add country style to your living room

Whether you live regionally or in the city, there are a number of ways you can imbue your living space with country-inspired charm and character. Namely, you could incorporate vintage pieces, natural finishes, cosy throws and cushions, a warm colour palette, classic silhouettes, timber pieces and charming antiques. Or, you could blend classic country style with contemporary design by adding just a few rustic elements to your space, be it through a woollen throw or a rattan basket.

To help kickstart your country-inspired living room revamp, we’ve found a selection of our favourite modern-meets-country pieces, as well as some of our favourite country living rooms from the archives.

Muted blues and greens

Soft furnishings and pops of blue and green feature throughout this white-washed weatherboard cottage in Bowral. “We defined the living and two dining areas within the open plan by anchoring them with joinery, rugs and light fittings and building a partial wall to the formal dining area,” says interior designer Anna of the cosy space.

Dual colour

Tucked away in a tiny town in Victoria, Dry Diggings, this heritage home was restored with the gentlest of hands. Sarah and Ben, who have since sold the property, discovered the original stone fireplace beneath a modern façade in the living room, and later installed a pot-belly wood heater for warmth in winter. A striking dual-tone paint treatment in Dulux Congo Brown and Hog Bristle draws from the colours of the bush.

Colourful rug

One surefire way of dialling up the colour and cosiness of a space is by adding a statement rug. In this maximalist Southern Highlands home, a warm-toned rug from Cadrys ties in with the ochre-hued velvet cushions and the colourful Christian Thompson artwork hanging above the sofa.

Built-in shelving

The original pink and burgundy living room of Bimlow Cottage was revived with an ornate mirror, a coffee table found on Facebook Marketplace and a rug from The Rug Shop in Bangalow. Vintage artworks hang above built-in shelving, which houses the owner’s collection of books, adding more colour to the space.

Grand fireplace

In the stately living room of this country-style Gembrook home, a grand fireplace takes centre stage. “The home has a lot of American design influence,” says Bobby Gordon, director and general manager of Robert Gordon, who owns this property alongside his wife and children. “It was quite unique for the area.”

Warm neutrals

Built in 1857, this stately home in Teesdale comes complete with an incredibly rich family history, markers of which can be found around the property. To tie it all together – hodge podge additions and all – interior designer Belle Hemming Bright was brought on board. In the living room, a palette of warm neutrals lets the original features – the windows and door, the ceiling details – speak for themselves.

Photography: Marnie Hawson

Classic grandeur

The living room of this converted bank in Hay is drenched in grandeur and class. Painted a custom shade, Porter’s Paints Duchess Satin, the space holds artwork by homeowner Sheila’s great-great-aunt, a custom sofa and a cosy rug. “The original details are so inspiring: high ceilings, large skirting boards, the craftsmanship of the handmade panelling and the cedar balustrade,” says Sheila.

Photography: Brigid Arnott | Styling: Jodie Gibbons

Converted shed

This converted shearer’s shed in Jugiong, NSW, enjoys the best of both worlds – high ceilings and contemporary country furniture blend beautifully with historic features, such as the original brick fireplace to the left. “It was just about keeping it simple – not having too much stuff in there, which is easy on the eye, too,” explains Yvette.

Photography: Marnie Hawson

Cosy farmstay

A warming fireplace taking centre stage, the living room of Dunmore Farm farmstay in Victoria beckons, promising cosiness and creature comforts. Just out of frame sits an antique leather armchair, a piece brought back from London by the couple who own the property.

Modern farmhouse

A raked ceiling and wrap-around windows make the most of natural light and picturesque views in the living room of The Barn at Rangeview, a modern barn-style accommodation. The Cheminee fireplace at the back of the space is, according to owner Wanita, the star of the space, inviting guests to gather with a glass of wine and a good book.

Cottagecore

The wood-burning stove within the living room of the picturesque and utterly charming Sinclairs of Berry warms the whole living room. Though set up to sleep 14 with generously appointed bedrooms, this space was designed for gathering, and feels extra welcoming and cosy.

Restored bungalow

In the living room of this relocated and restored old house in Pomona, Queensland, sunlight dances on a vintage chandelier that homeowner Linda purchased at a market in northern Italy and brought home in her suitcase. “I was astounded that it actually made it!” she says.

Antique furniture

Antique furniture and vintage artworks carry whispers of history in the lounge room of this 150-year-old dairy farmhouse in Milton, NSW. “The varied textures bring charm to spaces,” one of the owners says of the mixed materials in the room. “Showcasing the stone has added extra character to the building.”

A splash of colour

The living room of this 1950s Narrawa farmhouse imbues happiness, with its powder pink walls, green fireplace, gorgeous art and colourful furniture. Owner Penny admits that the fireplace was originally going to be the same pink as the walls, but her sister, Emma, reached for the green instead. “I hate to say, but it was almost a mistake,” she says. “It looks so much better to have that contrast.”

Striped wallpaper

Bold patterns and bright colours have revived this old farmhouse near Toowoomba, as seen in the joyfully orange snug. Above the orange wainscoting, Ottoline Sporty Stripes in Saffron wallpaper packs a punch, while a shapely Matisse lamp from Florabelle Living ties in with the navy sofa.

French provincial

European vintage and antique pieces are dotted around this French provincial cottage in Daylesford, VIC. The owner describes her collection of objects and artworks as “a beautiful way of self-expression”.

Leather sofas

Harry, a rescued Jack Russell/foxy cross keeps a lookout at the porthole window in the sitting room of this Mornington Peninsula farmhouse, where heavy curtains, worn leather sofas and timber furniture create a warm and inviting ambience.

Timber floorboards

Recycled timber floorboards laid in a chevron pattern draw the eye up towards a central fireplace. The Binalong property, known as Mylora homestead, once inspired the work of legendary Australian poet, Banjo Paterson.

Converted church

A divine living room was created in this open-plan church-turned-home. A natural colour palette echoes the timber tones of the impressive cathedral ceiling. “I love things that are weathered and tell the story of where they came from,” says the homeowner.

Coastal charm

High ceilings and skylights are a match made in heaven. Not only is this coastal Gerringong farmhouse bright and airy, it is toasty and warm once you get the fire roaring.

Weatherboard

In photographer Marnie Hawson’s charming cottage in Central Victoria, heritage details remind you of the home’s past, while modern furniture makes it feel fresh and comfortable. Beneath an original clothes hanger is a MCM House sofa, coffee table and cushions from Trentham General, and an Armadillo & Co rug.

Statement sofa

As the grandmillennial pink exterior of this weatherboard would suggest, the interiors of this Toowoomba home are filled with personality, collected items, art and colour. Full of antiques and fabulous finds, the gorgeous sofa pictured here was a serendipitous Gumtree pick up.

Family artworks

Personal pieces, such as family heirlooms and artworks, add instant character and emotional connection to a living space, as seen in the cosy lounge of this Federation-era Queenslander, where colourful family paintings adorn the walls.

Botanical flair

Mixing, rather than matching, is the secret to the warm, welcoming feel of this sitting room in a restored manse in Berry, NSW. A chaise and ottoman upholstered in Schumacher Les Fougeres fabric from Grant Dorman Interior Products sets the colour scheme, with more vibrant greens introduced through artwork and indoor plants.

Seaside charm

Captains Rest — a cosy, one-bedroom Airbnb cottage in Lettes Bay, is the ultimate relaxation haven. In the living room, the daybed under the window is a perfect spot to lie back and contemplate the peaceful scene outside.

Colourful lakeside cottage

While modest in size, this lakeside cottage near Noosa is big on charm. Antique furniture and artworks that the owner has collected on her travels fill the light-filled living space.

Barn style

Large windows, white walls and high ceilings with exposed beams all create an expansive feel in the open-plan living room of this barn-style home in Daylesford, Victoria. Large woven pendants, a textured rug and indoor plants help to make the space feel warm and welcoming.

Maximalist

A fireplace constructed from stones collected from around this renovated Berrima property is undoubtedly the hero of the living room. The historic home, which dates back to the 19th Century, was destined for demolition before the current owners snapped it up and began a large-scale restoration.

Swathes of yellow

Located in the Southern Highlands, this Georgian-style cottage embraces a more classic country aesthetic in the form of skirted armchairs, florals and antiques. In the living room, buttercup yellow uplifts and ties the space together.

Neutral tones

“I started by choosing neutral colours – I didn’t want to make it too tizzy,” the owner of Scottsburn Lodge says of her decorating approach. The formal dining room and lounge features pops of colour with a still-life piece by painter Henry Cockington and pretty purple hydrangeas.

Textural artworks

In the living room of this Southern Highlands cottage, a woven artwork by local artist Brook Munro hangs beside an antique French floor lamp, while a felt piece by Harriet Goodall, also a local, neatly conceals the television.

Exposed brick

Recycled bricks from Bowral Bricks form the rustic backdrop for the Cheminees Philippe fireplace in this modern Southern Highlands weekender. Contemporary pieces, including a curved beige sofa and paper lantern pendant light, complement the more country-style brick feature and rattan basket.

Creating a beautiful dining room that feels both elegant and inviting takes more than just a table and chairs. From statement pendant lighting to carefully layered table settings, the right combination of pieces can transform any space into a stylish haven for entertaining. In this guide, H&G’s stylist Sophie Wilson shares the essential dining room items and design tips every home should have this season – perfect for creating a room that’s both functional and full of charm

From chic tabletop treasures made for lingering dinner parties to a timeless room set-up inspired by a designer showroom display, H&G’s stylist, Sophie Wilson, serves up a feast of fresh decorating ideas this spring.

Ahead, a must-have list of all the items and design details no dining room should go without.

How to bring your dining room design vision to life

Winnings showroom De La Espada table
This De La Espada table in the Winnings showroom caught my eye, with its ash timber base and gloss forest green tiled top. I used this as a foundation to build this month’s ‘The Room’ scheme from.

Even for me, stepping into a showroom can feel overwhelming – and I’m in and out of stores most days.

To separate inspiration from all the visual ‘noise’, when I spot a hero piece I love, I take a quick snap on my phone, then build a moodboard of complementary pieces, drawing on the main style, finish or colour to create a cohesive, shoppable scheme.

1. Invest in the big ticket items

I love this ‘Carmel’ extension dining table for its curved corners and solid design. The Blonde Natural finish pairs well with many classic, coastal or contemporary looks; $6395, Coco Republic.

It’s no easy task hunting for a dream dining table that’s flexible, durable and made in a style you’ll love for years to come.

There are some great extendable designs available, which offer space to grow or accommodate many a lively gathering.

2. Add a pretty pendant

A detailed pendant light – such as this bamboo pleated designer shade – hung above your dining setting will offer ambient light and visual interest to your room. Opt for a single statement fixture to centre the room’s focus, or hang a cluster of lights in varying heights to add dimension and drama to an otherwise simple space.

3. Layer your place settings

Benefits of machine washable rugs

Rugs are more than just a stylish addition to your home. For high-traffic areas, a washable rug is a practical choice, especially in households with kids, pets, and, let’s face it, messy adults.

Designed to withstand regular washing, these rugs often last longer and stay looking fresh, whether placed in a living room, hallway, or kitchen. Plus, their easy maintenance saves you time and money, since you won’t need to pay for expensive professional cleaning or replace them as often. Who said style has to be sacrificed for durability? We certainly don’t think so.

Can you really wash washable rugs?

Washable rugs can be washed in a washing machine, but some may need to be taken to a laundromat if they are too large for your home washing machine. You can check the capacity of your washing machine and the specifications for any rug you’re looking at to find out if you’ll be able to wash it at home. If not, you could consider a smaller rug, or do a quick search for nearby laundromats that have larger, commercial washing machines that will fit your new rug.

What is the best washable rug for your home?

With so many choices online, it can be confusing choosing the right washable rug for you and your home. Here are some tips to consider when looking for the best one:

Check the fabric details: Some washable rugs are made from stain-resistant fabric that can be easily spot-cleaned as needed. There are also natural and synthetic fabric options, so if you have a preference, that can help narrow down your search for the right rug.
Consider how it will be used: Any washable rug is good if you have pets or young children at home, but beyond that, how it’s used could also influence the type of rug pad or base, as well as the overall design.
Check the measurements: Washable rug sizes can range from small enough to be a doormat to large enough to fill a room, with the price usually increasing with size. So it can help to have a tape measure handy.
Make sure it will fit in your washing machine: While washable rugs are usually designed to be washed in a washing machine, it does depend on the size of the rug and the machine. So, check the capacity guidelines for your washing machine, as well as any specific details for the rugs you’re thinking of getting.
Refer to the care instructions: Each washable rug will have different guidelines for washing and care, including some that recommend a wash before you lay them down. These instructions will help you get the best out of whatever washable rug you choose.

What are the downsides of washable rugs?

Despite their name, not all washable rugs are easy to clean, with large rugs often meaning a trip to the nearest laundromat with a washing machine big enough for the rug. They can also take a long time to dry. Some washable rugs may also be thinner than regular rugs to make them more washer-friendly. But that may not suit your space and could be frustrating when you try to vacuum them (a criticism that caught our eye while reading customer reviews for this article). So checking the pile height or thickness, washing machine capacity and washing specifications as well as customer reviews and return policies can help you choose the right rug for your space – whether it’s washable or not.

A place where friends and family gather, where meals are shared, and conversations are held, the humble but much-used dining room plays an integral role in any country home. If the kitchen is the heart of the house, country dining rooms are the soul.

From traditional farmhouse style spaces with timeworn tables overflowing with produce or freshly-picked flowers, to Scandinavian-inspired dining zones with floor-to-ceiling windows affording expansive views – we’ve gathered the best of the best from the pages of Country Style to inspire and delight.

Enchanting eclectic

The home of a lifelong collector, this dining rooms features a farmhouse table with vintage Thonet bentwood chairs, and a cotton pendant shade from The Society Inc. “We love everything old,” explains homeowner Lisa. “We’ve both always loved old houses and we wanted one in the country, with a big garden that we could get stuck into.” Situated on a former apple orchard in Victoria’s central highlands, this renovated farmhouse is the perfect foil for Lisa’s collection of treasures and curios sourced in Australia and overseas, from Indian balloon moulds and Moroccan rugs to birdcages and mid-century swan planters.

Respectful restoration

A painstaking renovation of this historic home on Bruny island in Tasmania revealed a glorious patchwork of heritage features and materials from the 1840s, including mortice and tenon joints, nogged brick walls, aged timber panels, original paintwork and even newspaper clippings. Instead of covering these, architect John Wardle chose to reveal them in sections, as seen in the gloriously simple kitchen/dining area.

Modern country

Despite being located within a new build, this dining area feels equal parts warm and sleek. It’s one of the many spaces in the home that enjoys views out to the Launceston countryside. “When you’re at the dining table, you can look out through the front door, which is all glass, and see a boat moored in the river. It’s really lovely to be able to connect with that view,” says the homeowner, Pearl.

Cottage style

Small in size but big in soul, the dining nook of this beautifully restored cottage in Dry Diggings, VIC, is as cosy as they come – especially thanks to an Esse wood-fired stove. The blackwood table belonged to the great-grandmother of one of the homeowners, while the copper pots and pans were passed down from his mother.

Heritage inspired

A grisaille wallpaper mural paired with forest green wainscoting creates a feeling of whimsy and a sense of grand scale in the dining room of this converted bank in Hay, NSW. Fresh flowers and cabbageware adorn the table, which sits ready and waiting for guests.

Rustic chic

“I fought hard for the curved-leg Danish table at the Raffan Kelaher & Thomas auctions,” says Kasturi, the owner of this cottage in Coolah, NSW, of their dining table. Red cattle dog-dingo cross Alf rests his head, hopeful for a snack.

Restored jewel

The hero of this open-plan dining space at a farmhouse in Molyullah, VIC is the Jotul wood stove which keeps the space cosy even in the depths of winter. “Opening up the living and kitchen areas to create one room just made such a difference,” says homeowner Bec MacDougall.

Renovator’s delight

Tomolly store owner, Belinda Satterthwaite, recently transformed a rundown cottage on her property into a welcoming guest house. Nowhere is the inviting atmosphere more apparent than in the dining room, where she often leaves a freshly-baked Moroccan spice cake for guests.

Country coastal

When restoring their weatherboard cottage in Toowoomba, QLD, couple Roger and Hayley were careful to decorate with as much antique and vintage furniture as possible. In the dining room, an early 1900s oak table with extendable eaves is the perfect setting for a family feast. The table is flanked by Bentwood chairs Hayley inherited from her great-grandparents.

Collector’s heaven

An extensive collection of books are at home on custom shelves in the dining room of a renovated Daylesford miner’s cottage. “I am a book hoarder and would never leave any behind,” says homeowner Lucie Sayer. Bentwood dining chairs flank the pre-loved timber table.

Traditional farmhouse

When the Maroulis family moved into this 1915-era farmhouse, they knew it needed to be expanded, but took their time planning the ultimate renovation. Eventually they bumped out the kitchen and dining area to create an airy, open-plan space. Today, the dining room is decorated in a pared-back style with an antique table, an old butcher’s block and Bentwood dining chairs.

Hampton’s inspired

There is no shortage of seating in the dining room of Sinclairs of Berry, a beautifully renovated cottage on the NSW South Coast. Owner Caroline Sinclair calls the open-plan dining room the “happy hub of the home.” The space, which opens onto the kitchen and living room features a custom 3.5 metre-long table constructed from 100-year-old Oregon ceiling joists discovered at a timber yard in the NSW Southern Highlands.

Biophilic beauty

Homewares store owner and freelance creative Hayley Priest’s modern farmhouse dining room is simply styled, allowing the stunning rural views beyond the windows take centre stage. The table is by Coco Republic, while the chairs were sourced at Barbara’s Storehouse in Bowral.

Minimal farmhouse

A large draftsman’s table bought at an auction has become the dining table in this Broken Hill homestead, after a stint as a workbench in the shed. “It’s old and worn and completely imperfect: just how I like it!” says homeowner Zanna. “The kitchen was actually planned around that 3.6 metre-long table.”

Shabby chic

Located right next to the open-plan kitchen, the dining room in this multi-generational family farmhouse in the Macedon Ranges is designed for large gatherings and effortless entertaining.

Blended contemporary

The owners of this Southern Highlands home, Michael and Patsy, have blended rustic country and Hamptons style with tribal elements that draw on Michael’s heritage (he’s originally from Zimbabwe). In the dining room, a lampshade by Harriet Goodall and Natalie Wilson hangs above a bespoke table by Graham Zealey of Moss Vale’s Southern Trade Supplies.

Artistic Mid-century modern

Furnished with vintage and inherited furniture, this artist’s weatherboard farmhouse in the Macedon Ranges feels eclectic and personal; a place where every piece has a story.

Industrial charmer

At this farmhouse cottage at rose farm Bush Roses in Bookham, verdant views of the garden can be enjoyed from every room. The dining room is no exception, orientated toward a huge picture window and wood fireplace.

Historic homage

This compact dining room proves you don’t need a huge amount of space to create a cosy spot to enjoy a meal and even entertain. The farm table and chairs in the kitchen were left by the previous owners of this Tudor style home.

Simple Scandinavian

In this renovated cottage in the Byron Bay hinterland, a simple Scandinavian-style dining space with a soft oak table, black Wishbone dining chairs and a woven pendant, feels calm, inviting and cosy with the fire close by.

Provincial vision

It’s easy to see why this is Louise Andreasen’s favourite spot in her home. “From my position there, I look directly out at the forest of beech trees behind the house. The changing seasons ensure it’s a new view every day. I like to watch for deer wandering through.” The Sika Design Rossini rattan chairs and Atmosphere wool rug, both from Domo, make the space feel warm and inviting.

Alpine inspired

Like many elements in this sustainable timber home, this colossal dining table was upcycled and refurbished, including the addition of a new parquet-style tabletop made from many timbers. Teamed with handmade bench seating, the table can accommodate up to 30 people!

White and bright

Tucked in a corner, the dining room in this coastal farmhouse feels cosy and intimate despite its fresh white colour scheme. Cane chairs keep things casual, while a bench seat under the window provides the perfect place to stretch out and read the morning paper.

The design industry has always reiterated that a monochrome palette is a key way to emanate elegance. Opting to forgo colour in favour of a classic monochrome scheme can offer endless design possibilities, from subdued to striking.

A restrained palette opens up opportunities to play with patterns, textures and layering to create sophisticated spaces that exude luxury.

Take styling inspiration from these sleek living rooms conceived by Australia’s top interiors maestros who have embraced the striking contrast of black and white.

A sleek and spacious restoration

A modern monochrome extension lies at the rear of this Sydney heritage home by CDArchitects and MXM Design Studio. The homeowners, a couple with young children, were seeking a monochromatic palette with muted hard finishes. “They wanted a neutral scheme and colours that would work in both the old and new parts,” says the designer.

A curvy home surrounded by opulent details

With its generous proportions and panoramic views over the district to the city skyline this house on a corner block in Sydney’s Hunters Hill ticked all the boxes for the empty-nester purchasers. With the brief specifying a black-and-white palette, designer Greg Natale was in his element but the owners’ wish for “a clean, modern and sleek interior” meant a change of beat for him. Known for his lavish layers and decoration, Greg said he held back on the patterns in this project but introduced plenty of texture and materiality.

A family home in Sydney’s east

Designer Dylan Farrell has performed a smart conjuring trick with this glamorous four-bedroom home in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs. In a magical transformation, he has deftly upped its formal, classical credentials, while, paradoxically perhaps, also making it fun and functional for family living. Bright white interiors “for lightness”, teamed with sophisticated black accents, drove the palette, expressed in white walls, timber flooring and lashings of marble.

An arresting home anchored in the slopes

This newly-designed concrete home’s strength of character comes not just from its robust materials but also the confident embrace of its bayside position with gun-barrel views of Sydney Heads. The mood throughout is one of quiet luxury. The owners favoured a monochrome palette, so the materials were restricted to blackened steel and timber for the stairs and living room shelving, and stained oak for the joinery in the kitchen and other areas.

A monochromatic Sydney apartment

By mining tricks of light, pattern panache and colour wizardry, clever design can bring new life to even the most modest dwelling. And that is certainly the case in this striking Sydney apartment that’s crossed over to the dark side.

A landscaper’s home

While this modern home is owned by landscape professionals, there’s nothing earthbound in the uplifting feeling it generates. Except, that is, for the abundant indoor greenery that is handsomely offset by a monochromatic palette.

A historic mansion brought back to life

In the communal spaces of this 19th-century mansion, monochromatic and minimalist furniture is juxtaposed with the highly ornate ceiling roses and intricate mouldings.

Point Piper home with stunning water views

Even the stunning water views on the doorstep can’t upstage the polished interiors of this reborn home in Sydney’s Point Piper. A lighter touch was needed, so Dylan Farrell and Thomas Hamel of Thomas Hamel & Associates and Timothy Moon of Timothy Moon Architects were hired to re fashion the two-level home.

Photography: Chris Warnes

A monochrome Arts and Crafts apartment

The owner of this Potts Point apartment has a love of soft greys, charcoals and muted colours, and the refresh of the interiors has a real sense of serenity. There are quite a few dark elements contrasted with large expanses of chalky greys, expressed through a very tight palette.

A Victorian home with Japanese influences

A harmonious fusion of Japanese, contemporary and Victorian influences instils a sense of effortless calm within this chic home conceived by Mim Design. A dialled down palette prevails in the sitting room.

A bespoke island paradise in Vanuatu

This dream-like Vanuatu property became a much-loved second home for Elizabeth Jones and her family. Contrast defines the kitchen and living area. Hand-picked objects stand proud in dark cabinetry and bold prints lift the white sofas.

A monochromatic Melbourne penthouse

Fitt de Felice was asked to create a luxurious, stylish and comfortable family home that would also be a great place for entertaining. A Ligne Roset ‘Ploum’ sofa from Domo acts as a statement piece in the living room.

An inner-city terrace

Design duo and mother and daughter Poppy and Charlotte O’Neil put their heads together to create a contemporary and fresh space in Charlotte’s inner-city terrace. A chic monochrome interior and layers of luxurious finishes gives the terrace a fresh new look.

When it comes to keeping your home and your family warm, there’s no denying the classic appeal of a beautiful open fire. As we spend more time indoors over winter, few things in life are more comforting than sitting before a hearth, and warming up in front of a crackling open fire.

A fireplace can be the central point of a house, everyone’s favourite place to entertain and relax, and with winter on the way, you might be looking to update or install a fireplace in your own home.

With so many different styles of fireplaces – from grand sandstone pillars, to sleek suspended fireplaces, ornate marble mantlepieces and slow-burning combustion stoves – how do you choose the right fireplace design for your home? Really, it comes down to space, fuel preference, budget and style and these beautiful designs offer up all the inspiration and information you need to make the right choice.

Banquette seating is no longer reserved for restaurants and cafes, with more and more Australian homeowners swapping the traditional table-and-chairs setup for dining booths and breakfast nooks, for both practical and aesthetic reasons.

If you live in a small home or apartment, a breakfast nook with a small table and bench seat is a space-savvy way to incorporate a dining zone into your home (so you don’t have to eat dinner on the couch every night). If space isn’t an issue, a banquette big enough to seat more than ten people is a fantastic option for those who love to entertain.

While it certainly has a nostalgic feel, banquette seating lends itself to any style of home – mid-century, modern, country, coastal – with designs ranging from simple built-in timber bench seats to custom-made booths with luxurious, leather upholstery.

One of the main architectural gestures to the restoration of one of Melbourne’s most significant homes was to open up the northern wing with a series of arches. Along the way is built-in pink and brown banquette-style seating, framed by steel-finished enclaves that allow the garden to be fully embraced.

Whether you’re looking to introduce subtle texture to your space with elegant grass-cloth or impress with a playful, whimsical pattern, wallpaper can add instant character and colour across a range of interior styles.

Hannah Cecil Gurney, daughter of de Gournay founder Claud Cecil Gurney and now director of the handpainted wallpaper company can attest to the allure and impact of using wallpaper in your home.

“In my childhood, my father covered our entire house head-to-toe in his scenic wall coverings, rich in palette and pattern,” she says.

“I was aware of their transportive powers from an early age.”

Despite interior design’s penchant for white paint and minimalism, wallpaper offers the opportunity to make a statement, and can easily be updated with your evolving taste. These days there are even removable options for those cautious of making too big of a commitment.

So, if you’re looking for a low-commitment way to inject life and personality into your space, find inspiration in these bold wallpaper designs as well as our top wallpaper picks from our favourite affordable luxury wallpaper brand Eurowalls.

Timber is a trusty and truly naturally sustainable material that can exude a rustic or refined charm. No longer confined to simply what’s underfoot, it can add texture, warmth and character to a space. Whether left natural, or stained, painted or varnished, the options are endless, and the aesthetics varied. From original timber walls to a golden plywood ceiling, find inspiration in these exquisite rooms that triumph with timber and celebrate both craftsmanship and innovation of the natural element.

An island-inspired family retreat

Beyond the oversized, heavyset timber door of this house on Sydney’s Northern Beaches is a tranquil compound that could be mistaken for a resort but is, in fact, a serene family home.

A magical Modernist property

The home on this magical property only accessible by boat is lined with original timber from 1897. In the 1980s thoughtful renovations were done, and rare and unusual timbers were sourced to give a contemporary edge to the property, fusing together the two periods.

An 1870s heirloom terrace

Terra firma hues and a muted palette bring this house, a generational family home inherited by the current owners, back down to earth. An 1870s timber-clad terrace in Paddington, it required an approach that was both sensitive and sensible.

A NSW south coast home with rocky surrounds

The richly-stained spotted-gum floorboards pick up the stonework’s mottled shades in this home among the gum trees, while a golden plywood ceiling, skilfully installed by local builders Blackwattle Constructions, reminds you to look up.

A waterfront house inspired by nature

A custom ‘Rachis’ table by Dylan Farrell Design for Jean de Merry sits under the sweeping curve of the staircase which is clad in ebonised oak. Interior design by Dylan Farrell Design.

A grand three-storey home

This grand three-storey home in Sydney’s Mosman uses clever design to create a series of intimate spaces throughout. In striking contrast to the surrounding interiors, this sitting room features a light timber-clad ceiling that gives the space an intimate and rustic warmth.

A robust home with vibrant furniture

This Mornington Peninsula holiday home is filled with robust and rugged raw finishes, including concrete, brick and timber, designed to deliver a low-maintenance interior with a carefree edge that is tailor-made for a family’s escape from the big smoke.

A dream home in Byron Bay

Timber was used cleverly by interior designer Jase Sullivan when designing Shelley Craft’s home in Byron Bay. Not only grounding the property in the surrounding nature, but clever concealed slatted timber doors lead to the walk-in robe, and a stacked timber wall system completely opens up the living space to the kitchen.

A heritage cottage with a Scandinavian extension

A Scandinavian aesthetic, by way of blonde timbers, white walls and pitch-perfect furniture, has infused this original 1900s cottage with a sense of youthful joie de vivre. While the impression is of a cool and contemporary abode, there is certainly no lack of warmth, which is generated by the tactile quality of the timber and travertine surfaces.

A concrete house with modernist lines

The repetition of ribbed timberwork is seen throughout this house designed by Neil Cownie Architect, including on the staircase.

A luxe Hamilton Island holiday home

This beachy holiday home, conceived by Greg Natale Design, ended up being a 1970s-inspired study in rosewood and walnut. The minimalist kitchen features timber slatted cupboards, and a mixture of beautiful tones.

A barn-style home on the Mornington Peninsula

A shaft of sunlight from the skylight pierces the stairwell of this luxe barn-style home on the Mornington Peninsula, crafted from Tasmanian oak from Abelwood and a steel balustrade. “Lavishly endowed with glowing Australian timber and limestone, this home has a robust but luxe materials palette “from the earth”, says Abe McCarthy of Abe McCarthy Architects.

21 home libraries that will make a bookworm weak at the knees https://www.homestolove.com.au/rooms/living-dining/best-home-library-designs-3504/ Tue, 18 Mar 2025 04:00:26 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/best-home-library-designs-3504 Attention, book lovers!

The philosopher Cicero once said that “a room without books is like a body without a soul,” and we must agree. Creating a space for books in your home, like a home library or cosy reading nook, isn’t just about providing storage; it’s about creating a space that reflects your interests and inspires you to learn or escape into the pages of a good book.

Following the rise of “bookshelf wealth” last year, collecting and proudly displaying all your books and favourite trinkets in a relaxed, maximalist fashion has become a popular way to transform an unused space into your own mini library.

With today’s bookshelf styling, it’s all about leaning less into the ‘styled’ and more into the ‘lived-in’ by filling your home libraries, study nooks and reading rooms with objects that truly reflect who you are, including photographs, candles, and of course, books.

How do I turn my living room into a home library?

Consider integrating a bookshelf (or floating shelves, if you’re particularly handy) to create a grander storage solution for your books and trinkets. A range of different styles means that working with your existing aesthetic doesn’t have to be a pain when creating your home library.

Seating is another thing to consider. Comfortable couches will make the space more inviting for friends and family to enjoy the space, and some oversized cushions will be a thoughtful touch too.

If you’re convinced but still looking for some inspiration, these impressive home library designs are sure to get your creative juices flowing.

When it comes to nailing modern home design, one of the most popular features is undoubtedly seamless indoor-outdoor flow.

There’s nothing we as Aussies love more than entertaining family and friends all year round, which of course means making the most of our backyards. As such, connecting your indoor and outdoor spaces is an easy way to maximise your available space for both relaxing and entertaining.

If you’re looking for inspiration, we’ve pulled together the best tips and 18 creative ideas that showcase the best indoor-outdoor flow can offer.

Sliding doors are an easy way to instantly improve a sense of indoor-outdoor flow in the home. (Photography: Felix Forest | Design: SJB | Story: Belle)

How to create indoor-outdoor flow

There’s no denying that one of the best ways to improve the flow between the indoor and the outdoor spaces of your home is to actually create a stronger connection between them.

One of the easiest and most stylish ways to achieve this is by adding bi-fold doors or sliding glass doors that can be opened and closed with ease. Not only do bi-fold and sliding doors look great, but they also allow more natural light to enter your living space.

How to extend your interior style outdoors

When it comes to styling the indoors and outdoors, one of the best ways to improve the sense of connection between the spaces is to keep your interior design style consistent.

Carry your internal home decor to the outdoors through your colour scheme, textural elements or even material palette to tie the areas together thematically. For example, if your living room features mostly timber furnishing, opt for a timber outdoor dining setting? Similarly, patterned outdoor cushions that echo the colour palette of your living space will help to mentally connect the areas.

How to bring the outdoors in

On the other end of the spectrum, bring parts of your outdoor spaces inside the house with ample lush indoor plants. No matter what type of plants you prefer, you can never have too many when it comes to styling inside the home.

Play around with different heights and pot and planter styles to create a dynamic look, while also creating clusters of different indoor plants to create lush vignettes.

Create clear sight lines

If bi-fold or sliding doors are not an option for helping to connect your indoor spaces with the outdoors, make sure you keep clear sightlines between inside the house and outside the house.

This means where possible, maximising the window space you have available and not obscuring it. Being able to see outside will instantly make you feel closer to nature. When it comes to window treatments, opt for sheer curtains to help keep the view intact.

What size should dining chairs be?

Most dining chairs have a seating height between 420mm and 460mm while tables vary in height from 700mm to 760mm.

It’s vital that a low chair isn’t placed with a high table and vice versa. Look for a comfortable amount of space beneath the tabletop or frame and your legs.

What material is best for dining chairs?

Small amounts of give in the structure enhance comfort – consider a flexible material like moulded plastic or plywood, or upholstery that softens and moulds to the body.

Solid timber and metal can also be very comfortable depending on the shape of the seat and back rest.

While designer Anna Spiro’s whimsically eclectic English country-style home is filled with colours, it’s the green patterned wallpaper in the bathroom that makes a true statement. Contrasted against a pink door, patterned Roman blinds and plenty of natural textures, theis space pops with personality.

This original 1907 Queen Anne-style house has been dramatically colour-drenched to create moody spaces while celebrating its heritage features. The forest-like sitting room features a wall painted in Haymes ‘Black Olive’ which acts as a backdrop for the furnishings and lighting choices by interior decorator Simone Haag.

The owners of this Federation home in Hunters Hill were firm that they wanted green interiors throughout. In the case of the bathroom, Porter’s Paints ‘Villa’ introduces some soft, textured green which is complemented by a marble and brass vanity.

The palette in this tropical modernist-style home is “what can be seen from the panoramic terrace at sunset – pink clouds, a green tree-lined backdrop and the blue sea in the distance,” says interior designer Jase Sullivan. The kitchen joinery has been stained with a green tint, and the marbles used throughout have been selected to complement.

As a nation, we are obsessed with all things property improvement and renovation, with shows like The Block and House Rules gracing our television screens year after year.

We just can’t seem to get enough of amazing home transformations, before-and-after pics and interior design advice! So it can come as somewhat of a shock when ugly houses – presumed to be an endangered species – are spotted in the wild.

Instagram account @pleasehatethesethings was started by US interior designer Dina Holland, and has since amassed over 616,000 followers by documenting “absurd, ill conceived & just plain stupid things in home design.”

From the “Satan fireplace” to the shower that sprays directly into the toilet, these design crimes will need much more than an Instagram filter to stop our eyes from burning.

A staircase covered in hair

Hairway to hell

This is what happens when you take the story of Rapunzel as design inspiration. We’re not sure what’s worse: that a company manufactured this atrocity, or that someone actually installed it in their house!

A door that opens halfway down a staircase
Photo: @pleasehatethesethings

The trick staircase

Fancy falling down the stairs every morning? This doorway has got your back. Seriously though, between the door juuuuust grazing the handrail and the complete lack of landing, there’s design crimes everywhere you look in this scary photo.

The non-slip bathroom

They might have solved the slip hazard in this bathroom, but can you imagine the smell? At least they’re saving a bit of money on a bath mat.

A sink with a very badly cut benchtop
Photo: @pleasehatethesethings

The Scissorhands sink

Look, we know sometimes done is better than perfect, but if you ever find yourself in a home with a sink like this, back away slowly and then run for your life. This is criminal behaviour.

A bath wedged in between two walls

The invite-only tub

What came first, the house or the bath? We know it’s sad when you can’t fit a tub in your tiny bathroom, but sometimes, a bath is just not worth it.

A staircase with wide gaps in the middle

The killer flight

Building code? Never heard of it. At least the owners will have a better excuse for getting out of work than ‘the dog ate my homework’.

The his and hers powder room

No. Nooooooo. This is way too close for comfort (sorry). We’re not sure if this is designed for couples, families or (god forbid) guests, but nobody needs a partner in crime while they do their business.

A fireplace with a large Satan head above

The Satan fireplace

We’re not sure how this cosy fireplace with ‘character’ fits into this living room’s whole coastal-meets-Hamptons vibe, but be careful not to knock a tooth out when you go to put another log on.

A kitchen with a galaxy design on the roof
Photo: @pleasehatethesethings

A recipe for disaster

We can’t help but feel that this crowded kitchen would be a hazard to cook in, with its low ceiling, terribly planned layout, varied bench heights, and overly decorative glossy cabinetry fronts. As for the black hole ceiling mural? No comment.

A bathroom where the shower drips into the toilet
Photo: @pleasehatethesethings

New age bidet

This bathroom goes to show why it’s important to seek expert advice when remodeling a small bathroom. A shower over a bath is one thing, but a shower over a toilet? That takes guts.

Space-saving bathroom

Going with the classic ‘cupboard under the stairs’ obviously wasn’t good enough for this house, but each to their own. We’re just wondering whether there’s an exhaust fan installed above the shower?

A kitchen with cream-coloured quilted cabinets

Quilted cabinets

This padded kitchen cabinetry sure must come in handy when you’ve got your hands full and go to shut the drawer with your hip. Rhinestones are just an added bonus, really.

Designer feature wall

We know that some luxury fashion houses have dropped homewares, like when Dolce and Gabbana collaborated with Smeg, but somehow this feature wall just have the same effect. If you’re going to knock off the iconic LV, at least spell it right.

Dolls heads with plants growing out of the top

Succulents on the brain

We’re all for recycling, but we can think of better things to do with your old dolls…for example, give them to a kid in your life. If you want to be creative with displaying your collection of succulents, then make these far less creepy DIY dinosaur succulent planters instead!

A home with a barn door that doesn't reach the floor
Photo: @pleasehatethesethings

Barn door fail

Hey there barn doors! How’s it hanging? While they’re not quite full length, at least the doors will never scratch the hardwood floors. But the pure genius of these barn doors lies in the cabin hook keeping the doors closed. That’ll definitely stop intruders from entering.

A multi-coloured, circus-inspired bedroom

Just way, way too much

This god-knows-what-themed bedroom is what nightmares are made of. Roll over in the middle of the night to be greeted by a bizarre doll’s bust? No thank you. A toy-box-looking trunk at the end of an adult’s bed? Just why. We’re not even sure how to begin dissecting this one, all we’ll say is; whoever is responsible should have stopped a long, long time ago.

How to choose the best type of window covering for your home https://www.homestolove.com.au/rooms/living-dining/types-of-window-coverings-6899/ Wed, 09 Oct 2024 23:27:00 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/types-of-window-coverings-6899 Make the most of your windows with the right window coverings.

The post How to choose the best type of window covering for your home appeared first on Homes To Love.

]]>
An undressed window is like a dress without shoes, but there’s a trick to knowing how to choose the best type of window covering, be it shutters, louvres, sheers, or even the new voice-controlled, smart-home compatible, motorised roller blinds.

To finish a window in any treatment is to realise the full potential of your aspect and your interior. As always, think texture and layering – materials are key when it comes to the perfect window covering.

Here, two experts share their tips for selecting timeless window treatments that are functional and that will suit the style of your home.

Are curtains still in style?

According to interior stylist Kate Nixon, the short answer is yes – curtains are still in style. On-trend curtain fabrics include slubby linens, floaty sheers and heavy velvets. Even leather can make for a statement window treatment in an industrial style home.

The key to making your curtains look modern, rather than old-fashioned is to select simple, slimline hardware. Consider whether you want your windows to be the statement or to frame the view beyond and choose your palette (bold or neutral) accordingly.

How to choose the best type of window covering

Chrissie Jeffrey, Creative Director of No Chintz says there are some tips for nailing the window furnishings in your home:

  • Do work within your budget. Spend money on the rooms you spend most time in.
  • Do it gradually. Do one room, then save up to do another one six months later.
  • Do allocate the same amount for windows as joinery, especially with new builds
  • Run blinds and curtains at the same height. The exceptions to this are when you have completely different ceiling and structural elements within the one room

How to select the right blinds

Blinds are popular because they suit any interior style and usually do a better job at filtering or blocking out the light and heat in summer and keeping heat in in winter, says Kate.

Blinds are indeed practical, but with so many types of blinds available, it’s important to take the style of your home into consideration. Venetian blinds, for example, are often associated with office buildings, but a quality set of timber Venetian blinds are ideal for Federation homes.

And, if you value convenience, there are options on the market of blinds that can be voice-controlled to open and close on demand. Just connect them up to your existing smart-home device and you can raise or lower your motorised blinds from the comfort of your couch.

It’s important to select a style of blinds that suits the home. In this bedroom, Roman blinds keep harsh daylight out. (Photo: Maree Homer | aremediasyndication.com.au)

Is it ok to have blinds without curtains?

In a minimalist, modern home, there’s really no need to layer blinds with curtains. The key is to allow the blinds to blend into the interior, so select a blind in a colour that matches the walls.

Chrissie says there’s no need to furnish every window in the home the same way. In wet areas for example, plantation shutters might be the best option. (Photo: John Paul Urizar | aremediasyndication.com.au)

Things to avoid when buying curtains and blinds

Chrissie Jeffrey says some of the most common mistakes people make when selecting curtains and blinds include:

  • Buying good fabric then skimping on the quality of the sewing. Good fabric made up poorly will always look bad.
  • Thinking you have to have the same window treatments throughout the whole house.
  • Ignoring the style of the house. The hardware of window treatments relate back to the style of home. An S-track, for instance, might not look right in a Federation house, or a room filled with antiques

There is an undeniable charm about heritage homes. Many of these homes are in less than perfect condition and in need of a revamp to restore them to their former glory. These challenges can often push creatives out of their comfort zones, or standard practice, and it is here that real magic tends to be made.

Their ornate detailing, unique designs and rich character make them extremely desirable and particularly special projects for interior designers and architects to work on.

From thoughtful restorations to sympathetic and modern additions, these heritage homes exude a sense of timelessness. Take inspiration from these unique and enviable design elements that have been glorified by some of Australia’s top talents.

A fashion designer’s heritage home

This stunning house in Sydney’s eastern suburbs was on a grand scale with traditional features such as arches and decorative ceilings that were to be maintained through the sensitive redesign by Luigi Rosselli Architects. “Texture and tone were really important but we also wanted to strike a balance between minimal interior forms and richly decorated architectural elements,” says interior designer Romy Alwill.

A white on white renovation refreshed this heritage home in Sydney, a delicate balancing act of marrying the old with the new. Phoebe Nicol of Phoebe Nicol Interior Architecture skilfully updated, refreshed and rationalised the Woollahra, NSW, property, bringing it into a new century all ready to face a beautiful future.

A sensitive update to this handsome heritage house has made it fresh and relevant for a family of six. “It was important to respect the history and character of the house but not to make it stuffy,” says designer Suzanne Gorman.

A remodelled heritage terrace

The brief for the revamp of this heritage terrace was to insert modern conveniences while being true to the building’s original spirit and to provide adequate space and accommodation for a growing family. “It was an ornate, handsome building. I had always loved it and could not believe I’d been asked to do the design,” said the designer.

A historical Sydney terrace

With a keen interest in architecture and interior design, owner and health professional Peter Stewart tackled the renovation of this Victorian terrace, with the help of a heritage architect. While respecting its heritage and period features the home was injected with a subtly modern aesthetic.“It’s a restful, neutral palette. There’s a lot going on with all the paintings,” said the owner/interior designer.

A large family home in South Yarra

This period Melbourne heritage home was transformed with sophisticated style and a wondrous collection of artwork, heirlooms and vintage pieces. The result is a celebratory clash where pieces like a traditional French bench seat and Spanish table from Holly Hunt in New York live together. “I was cautious about cluttering the space and how to temper myself … by not putting too much in,” says owner Katie

A reimagined 1880s Melbourne home

A stately Melbourne home receives a makeover that honours its heritage while forging a brighter future. The gorgeous original features were to be honoured and revitalised, while the new elements were to be unashamedly modern, with a nod to the owner’s Swedish roots. Said the owner, “We adore coming home and opening that blue door.”

A stately French-inspired country home

The stately French-inspired home on Wollumbi Estate dates back to the 1900s. Its current owner was careful to exercise restraint when renovating to ensure it maintained its authenticity with its vaulted wooden ceilings, French doors, stone fireplaces and original architraves. “The aim was to use the bones of the house and renovate with restraint to maintain the authenticity of the early 1900s structure,” the owner said.

Georgian-style home

Interior designer Siobhan Rothwell and her architect husband, William, purchased this 160-year-old sandstone heritage home and sensitively restored it’s Victorian Georgian style. A restrained palette was used throughout, inspired by the original sandstone walls, while contemporary touches create a striking contrast between old and new. “I love the tension created by playing with contrasting elements; a tension of aesthetic contradiction.” says interior designer Siobhan Rothwell.

Bold colour and contemporary features up the ante in this Victorian terrace and anchor it firmly in a new era courtesy of architect David Luck and Hecker Guthrie. “We wanted to remain sensitive to the period features of the house and preserve the idea of ‘the formal room’ but make it feel contemporary and connected through quality and material,” says Hamish Guthrie.

A youthful heritage home

A clever combination of old and new gives this heritage home a fresh personality that befits its youthful owners. The result is layered vintage that nods to the past, complemented by furnishings, carpets, art and fabrics very much of the present.

Design practice Studio 103 took on a time-sensitive project with just three months to complete the renovation and refurbishment of this heritage home, a Victorian terrace in central Melbourne. “The new open quality of the space brings fluidity and natural light to the narrow floor plan,” said interior designer Sonia Attard.

A historic mansion brought back to life

In the communal spaces of this historic 19th-century mansion, monochromatic and minimalist furniture is juxtaposed with the highly ornate ceiling roses and intricate mouldings. “There were some incredibly magnificent details and we knew what we had to keep. Any alteration we made was done with a sense of timelessness in mind,” the owner said.

A Victorian terrace renovation

Behind its prim and pristine classic façade, this grand Victorian heritage home in Sydney’s inner west relaxes as a versatile and practical home for an extended family. “We wanted somewhere we could live without it being too precious, that also married the old and new,” say the owners.

A colourful reimagining of this heritage home transforms it into a feast for the eyes for a blended family of five to hang out and spread out as needed. “Colour was important in every room,” explains designer, Brooke. “Bethany and Tim are incredibly colour-confident and urged us to ensure that every room had a separate colour associated with it.”

A handsome Victorian house in a leafy Melbourne suburb

Barely touched since the 1800s, this handsome Victorian house in a leafy Melbourne suburb has a newfound sense of lightness thanks to a robust renovation by Adelaide Bragg. Architect John Watkins was brought in to assist with the structural changes, including a new rear and upstairs addition. “This house isn’t centred around a television, it’s centred around food and family,” said Adelaide.

Designer Mardi Doherty’s approach to this Melbourne heritage home was to strike a balance between a new, pared-back aesthetic and allowing the existing features to shine.

Tanya Hancock Architects was tasked with transforming this Gothic Revival house into a light-filled family home. “We were focused on restoring the incredible heritage elements but we also wanted sleek design,” says the owner.

A stately mansion with a storied past

D’Estaville was originally built in 1859 in the Classical Revival style, and while the current owners admit it was at first imposing, they saw the potential for a softer, more contemporary family heritage home. Working with architect Brett Nixon, director of NTF Architecture, the practice’s project architect Ben Ellul, interior designer Tess McKinlay and heritage consultant Miles Lewis, the heritage property is now a place their children and pets roam free.

The original section of this Sydney home revamped by architect Telly Theodore features a muted and timeless colour palette, while heritage details including the ceiling roses and wainscoting have been preserved. “Of the client couple, he favoured a gutsy industrial-style interior whereas she was keen to draw on more heritage references. I set out to find ways to bring these two aesthetics together” said the designer.

Award-winning interior designer Alexandra Kidd aims to bring joy to the every day through her functional but artisanal designs. In a collaboration between Belle and Fanuli, the Founder of Sydney-based Alexandra Kidd Interior Design, created her dream living area using clean lines and luxurious pieces from Fanuli.

Here, we speak to her about her design.

What was your inspiration and design concept for this space?

The inspiration for this space was drawn from the elegant and timeless design ethos of Italian brand Flexform. My design concept revolves around creating a sophisticated and textural atmosphere by incorporating elements such as the woven leathers of the armchair and ottoman, the curves of the sofa, and the lamps, drapes, rug, and hand-woven screen. Overall, the scheme aims to create a harmonious balance between function and form, and beauty and comfort, inspired by the timeless elegance of Flexform’s aesthetic…I particularly love the couture sensibility and texture of the ‘Bangkok’ ottoman. It’s the perfect mix of contemporary design and exceptional craftsmanship.

Flexform ‘Crono’ armchair in timber and woven cowhide cord, Flexform ‘Vasco’ rug in woven jute and wool, Flexform ‘Bangkok’ ottoman in woven leather, all from Fanuli. (Photography: Alana Landsberry)

Why did you choose these Fanuli pieces?

The choice of materials such as woven leathers adds a sense of luxury and craftsmanship to the space, while the curved sofa introduces fluidity and a sense of movement. A textural lamp, drapes, and rug enhance the tactile experience and contribute to the overall ambiance of comfort and warmth. The color palette leans towards neutral tones to allow the richness of the materials and textures to take center stage.

        What is your favourite piece?

It is very difficult to select a favourite! I particularly love the Bangkok ottoman, with its handmade woven leather and couture sensibility and texture. It’s the perfect mix of contemporary design and exceptional craftsmanship.

What is your top tip for creating the perfect living room?

            • Simplicity with elegance: Keep the design clean and sophisticated with minimalist lines and understated elegance. Avoid clutter and opt for furniture with sleek silhouettes and refined detailing.
            • Focus on quality: Flexform is renowned for its commitment to craftsmanship and high-quality materials. Invest in well-made pieces crafted from premium materials that stand the test of time.
            • Texture play: Incorporate textural elements like woven fabrics, plush rugs, and tactile cushions to add depth and visual interest to the space. Mix and match textures for a layered and inviting look.
            • Curated accessories: Choose accessories thoughtfully to complement the furniture pieces. Opt for minimalist artwork, sculptural vases, and designer lighting fixtures that enhance the overall aesthetic without overwhelming the space
            • Open layout: Embrace a sense of openness and fluidity and arrange furniture to promote conversation and interaction.
            • Natural light: Maximize natural light by keeping window treatments minimal or sheer to create an airy and inviting atmosphere. Incorporate mirrors strategically to reflect light and visually expand the space.
            • Personal touches: Infuse the room with your style through curated decor items, family heirlooms, and cherished mementos. These touches add warmth and personality.

If you revel in hosting friends and family at home, you’ll understand the importance of creating a welcoming atmosphere. Great food and delicious drinks go without saying, but a warm and lively space can enhance the dinner party experience for you and your guests. Here we share luxurious decor updates and practical tips to reinvigorate your kitchen-dining zone. Get ready to celebrate every special occasion in style.

            1. Pay attention to the mood of the room

A well-curated atmosphere — adjusted with lighting, color schemes, decor, and even music — can make any celebratory occasion feel more inviting and vibrant. And a lively, well-considered ambiance can encourage conversation, relaxation, and a sense of togetherness, transforming an ordinary dining experience into something special.

Here are some simple ways to enhance mood in an instant:

            • Lighting cues: Forget the ‘big light’ and rely on several sources of soft, diffused ambient lighting to create a warm atmosphere. Use task lighting in the kitchen and table lamps and candles in the dining area. Mood lighting at its finest!
            • Layers of rugs: Decorating with multiple rugs can add visual warmth while anchoring the kitchen-dining area. Rugs can also improve acoustics by absorbing sound, creating a more relaxed vibe.
            • Fresh flowers: Place fresh flowers, herbs, or plants around the kitchen and dining space. Consider seasonal arrangements to keep the space lively and fragrant.
            • Aromatherapy: Use subtle, high-quality diffusers or scented candles to create a welcoming aroma that complements the occasion.

Top tip: Integrate a high-quality sound system for background music (or invest in a portable speaker). Choose a playlist that suits the occasion, from soft jazz for a dinner party to upbeat tunes for a festive gathering.

            2. Add a touch of luxury

Just like a statement piece can instantly elevate an outfit, a touch of luxury is one of the most impactful ways to liven up a kitchen. Whether it’s a statement cast iron pot, coffee machine or a big-ticket appliance, a premium product can make entertaining at home more efficient and enjoyable.

Shot of an open fridge in a kitchen.
Treat guests to perfectly preserved wine with the Monolith wine columns. Alongside customised shelf labels, the LED side-wall lighting casts a beautiful glow to impress even the most discerning guests. (Photo: Supplied)

If you’re going to invest in a new appliance, make it your refrigerator set up. From refrigerators to freezers and wine cellars, the Monolith range by Liebherr is designed to make dinner party prep easier, allowing you to serve restaurant quality meals paired with matching wines at home.

The fridges feature plenty of space to store degustation courses, while the BioFresh-Plus technology allows fresh ingredients — from a crisp salad to seafood — to last longer and retain nutrients and freshness. And the freezers’ precise controls mean even delicate ingredients like herbs can be frozen without loss of quality. A touch of luxury goes a long way.

            3. Ensure the space is sparkly clean

Use a two-in-one vacuum and mop on kitchen floors for a squeaky clean feel underfoot. (Photo: Supplied)

A tidy home shows guests you’ve taken the time to prepare for their visit, encouraging them to relax in sparkly clean comfort. This means clearing clutter from kitchen counters and wiping down the dining table before you set it. If you’re short on time, high-tech cordless vacuums are a game changer for dinner party prep as they’re lightweight and easy to manoeuvre.

Top tip: Invest in a premium stick vacuum like the Flexi Lite wet and dry vacuum which can clean rooms from edge-to-edge. With flat reach capabilities, it can clean under furniture as low as 15 centimetres so you can vacuum beneath the dining table and in tricky kitchen crevices. When hosting a dinner party, keep it nearby to quickly clean up any wet and dry messes throughout the evening.

The lounge room is often the primary space dedicated to entertaining family or friends – it’s the spot where you gather to watch movies on Friday evenings, where you relax with your favourite book, and where you retreat to with friends after a dinner party. Therefore, it’s worth carefully considering your lounge room style to ensure it’s as inviting, comfortable and stylish as it can be. This is typically achieved through adopting a well-planned layout, selecting a great sofa and styling with fabulous accessories.

Whether you favour a more charming, country look or a modern and minimal aesthetic, these 16 chic lounge room ideas are sure to offer plenty of inspiration for your next revamp.

Lounge room ideas to inspire you

            The elegant, airy abode

Despite its mostly neutral palette, the lounge room of this Florence apartment is fun and playful, with nods to 1970s design throughout. Owner (and shoe designer) Barbara Borghini says she fell in love with the home’s sense of harmony from the get go; “I loved this house because it already had the shades that I adore, all the colours of the earth and wood.”

            The cosy, country beauty

This quaint and comfy lounge room belongs to Airbnb Captain’s Rest in Lettes Bay, Tasmania. “When it’s cold or wet outside, I sit in front of the large windows watching the water and hills with a fire lit in the wood burner,” says owner and sailor Sarah Andrews, who restored the home whilst simultaneously falling in love with the region.

            The modern, monochromatic lounge

There’s elegance and beauty in the minimalism of this monochrone living room. Located within a historic 19th century mansion, the owner has carefully restored many of the original features, including some incredibly ornate ceilings.

            The indoor-outdoor delight

This mid-century style home on the NSW South Coast boasts eco-friendly design that hits both sustainability and coastal cool aesthetic. The single-level home reads as a glass-walled pavilion, the pivoting timber-battened external screens providing privacy where needed.

            The entertainer’s weekender

Matte black paint and elegant decor make this room feel extra cosy despite the towering cathedral ceilings, serving European vibes in this Mornington Peninsula weekender. Owner Chyka Keebaugh says she and her husband, Bruce, designed the home around the concept of hosting; “We have a lot of friends in the area and are constantly catching up here.”

            The historic sitting room

The light-filled and cosy sitting room at Forest Hall, a colonial manse in Tasmania, is a masterclass in how to decorate a historic home. Here, owner Emma has layered vintage and modern furniture to create a space that respects its roots without feeling dated. “There are pockets of heritage everywhere in the home and garden,” Emma said.

            The lofty and light-filled lounge

Spacious, lofty, light and bright, this Queenslander meets Mediterranean-style home has everything you’d expect from a north coast property. The lounge room is grounding – despite its double height ceilings – thanks to the selection of comforting and plush furnishings.

            The art-filled haven

This grand family home in Canberra is full of cosmopolitan character. The generously-sized living room plays host to pieces from the family’s extensive private art collection, while the deeply peaked ceiling in this room makes for an incredibly dramatic statement.

            The Scandi family home

An industrial palette of concrete floors, white brick and steel beams is offset with warming timber tones and soft greys and whites in the living room of this renovated 1930s Scandi home. Just to the left out of frame sits a Cheminee Phillipe fireplace, where the family gathers during winter.

            A revived Edwardian classic

The lounge area of this revived Edwardian home in Melbourne designed by Larritt-Evans and BayleyWard Architects is polished yet relaxed, featuring a range of curved furniture items, which stand in contrast to the hard lines of the steel doors and pergola beyond. “The rear space is polished, yet relaxed and unfussy,” says the owner.

            The Spanish-inspired space

Commanding and luxurious with a vintage vibe, the centrepiece of this living room has to be the original arched fireplace, which announces its Spanish heritage. The rest of the home, a restored 1920s villa, runs along the same vein, with curves in all the right places.

            Photography: Lisa Cohen

            The slick, modern masterpiece

The Block’s Alisa and Lysandra worked their magic with a modern revamp of a heritage home in Melbourne’s Albert Park. The living room is minimal yet ultra-stylish, taking in lovely views of the lush courtyard.

            The Mediterranean palace

Old Hollywood glamour meets Mediterranean flair in the living room of this sprawling mansion in Sydney. In the stunning lounge designed by owner Stephanie Conley Buhre, textural elements in shades of brown, green and blue pop off the white background, creating an elegant and curated effect.

            The chic and cosy charmer

Enamoured with its history and charm, owners Amanda and Simon Britt purchased this charming river cottage, making minimal changes to the interior. The lounge room is a cosy space with grey Domayne sofas and a fireplace from Coastline Barbeques & Heating.

            The elevated country lounge

This inviting home on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula takes country style to new heights. The lounge room boasts an impressive 5.5-metre cathedral ceilings and wide engineered-oak floorboards.

            The blue-hued beauty

Striking floor-to-ceiling curtains add scale and softness to this blue lounge room within a contemporary three-level family home. An L-shaped sofa designed by interior designer Malvina Stone and made by Casa Villa in Perth is paired with an Empire Homewares cushion, ‘Blava’ easy chairs from Stylecraft and ‘Bandy’ tables from Jardan.

Are you in search of the perfect coffee table to complete your living room? A coffee table is undoubtedly the centrepiece of the living room (and home), so finding one that fits your space and taste is a task that should not be taken lightly. Coffee tables come in a plethora of shapes and sizes, but one shape that reigns most popular in Aussie homes is the humble rectangle coffee table.

A coffee table of the rectangle variety is popular for a reason, it’s versatile, fits snugly with your existing lounge or sofa sets, and is big enough for board games night with friends and family.

How do you style a long rectangular coffee table?

Styling your coffee table is a great way to show off your personality and design taste. And with a rectangle coffee table, there’s a lot you can do to add a bit of artistic or visual flair to your space.

            • Create a coffee table vignette: creating a coffee table vignette is an easy way to add a decorative flair to your space. Choose a base to start with (like a book or a decorative tray) and work your way up. Our tip? Variety is key, make sure there are varying heights, shapes, and textures. And always work in odd numbers – so, three pillar candles, never four, for example

            • Add flowers: you can never go wrong with a bunch of fresh flowers to brighten up your living space

            • Coffee table books: there are so many gorgeous coffee table books to choose from, this is the only time where the cover of a book does matter. Choose one that matches your existing decor and your interests

Is marble a good choice for a dining table?

Marble is a great choice for people looking for a beautiful, durable and timeless dining table that will last. With the proper care, marble is a hard-wearing and durable material that can look just as beautiful in 50 years as it does today. However, marble is also quite porous, making it prone to scratches and stains if not tended to. If you’re purchasing a marble dining table, you need to get in the habit of using coasters and placemats, and cleaning up any spills quickly to avoid permanent stains.

Are marble dining tables in fashion?

Marble has always been a coveted material, renowned for its beauty, opulence and durability. We love marble dining tables for their timeless elegance and ability to work with any interior style, making them a furniture item that transcends trends . However, marble has become a more popular and fashionable material in recent years, with many interior designers and architects favouring it in kitchens and bathrooms. A luxurious marble dining table is a great way to bring this fashionable material into your home without doing a full kitchen or bathroom redesign.

In a collaboration between Belle and Fanuli, Principal and Director of Hare + Klein Interior Design, Meryl Hare transformed the most intimate room in her home into a chic sanctuary.

She was compelled to design her perfect dining room and to furnish this, she looked no further than Fanuli for premium furniture and homewares from across Italy and Australia. Here, we speak to her about it’s design.

            1. What was your inspiration and design concept for this space?

A few years ago I went to the Riva 1920 factory in Northern Italy, organised by Fanuli – I was already attracted to their aesthetic – but it was inspiring to meet the family that has produced furniture for three generations and to feel their passion for the timber they source and to witness their manufacturing processes.

            2. Why did you choose these Fanuli pieces?

I love the simplicity of the Curve bench in the foreground carved from a single block of blackened cedarwood, the combination of raw steel and walnut of the dining table with the library shelves as a backdrop.

            3. What is your favourite piece?

My favourite is the Curve bench, but I love the combination of all the elements.

4.What is your top tip for creating the perfect dining room?

I like a dining room to have atmosphere, whether it’s formal or casual. In this instance, the ambience is created with rich timbers, natural textures and art.

The secret to making a house your Dream Home https://www.homestolove.com.au/interiors/making-a-house-your-dream-home/ Mon, 15 Jul 2024 00:55:40 +0000 https://www.homestolove.com.au/?p=259827 Whether you're a homeowner or a renter, transforming your space into the home of your dreams might be easier than you think. We share the ways small changes can create big impact.

            ]]>
If the current climate, and experiences of the past few years, has taught us anything, it’s that our homes are being tested more than ever before. A tougher market, spatial requirements for multigenerational living and small space solutions, are top of mind for anyone considering how they’re living now, and what that might look like in the future.

From DIY updates to tech upgrades and everything in between, these tips will take your house from tired to inspired, bringing you one step closer to the home of your dreams.

In an ode to the great outdoors, serene swathes of green are luxuriously layered across the wainscoting, decorative accents and even in the LG CordZero Auto Emptying Handstick + Power Mop Vac, all coming together to create an interior scheme that’s both colourful and comforting. Photo: Supplied LG.

            Don’t be afraid of colour

It’s your dream home, not someone else’s. So how did we all get so consumed in resale value or the need to keep design ‘safe’, that we lost our colour confidence? Paint is one of the easiest, most affordable, (and most reversable) ways to inject some personality back into your space, and with most landlords happy for tenants to make cosmetic updates (with permission, of course) this works for renters and owners, alike.

But, embracing all-in drenching or adding a splash of this year’s hottest hue aren’t the only avenues to packing on the personality. Don’t overlook appliances when it comes to boosting the bold — we love the deep forest green finish of the LG CordZero Auto Emptying Handstick + Power Mop Vac for an added dose of dopamine with your daily routine.

The warming colour palette of Taeler and Elle’s Dream Home extends through to the living area, where neutral furnishings and textural finishes promote a sense of peace, while OLED technology delivers the best viewing experience, for that cinema feeling at home. Dream Home Ryhs and Liam living room

In celebration of the Dream Home partnership, LG is giving away the opportunity for two Australians to win a room makeover. Running until 31 July 2024, the two best entries will each win an LG Dream Home room makeover valued at RRP $15,000, including a selection of eligible LG products up to the value of RRP $10,000, a $3,000 Freedom gift card and a digital interior design consultation with Kate Lawrence Interiors. Entries are open now at LG Dream Home Competition.

Create your own at-home revitalisation zone

Focusing on more economical ways to enjoy our downtime equates to spending more time than ever consuming content and prioritising wellness from home. And whether it’s movie night with the whole family or taking advantage of the early hours with an on-screen yoga class, elevating your home comfort level is easier than ever. Even the most compact living space can be transformed into a multi-use marvel with clever consideration.

Prioritise a proportional sofa that offers room for a work out zone; use multipurpose furniture to streamline storage; forgo bulky armchairs for transitional pieces like ottomans or floor cushions that can be stored away when not in use, and layer with cosy accents for the ultimate finishing touch, just don’t forget the tech!

Upgrading your TV to a sleeker, smarter version, can be a serious gamechanger when carving out a space made for unwinding. The latest G4 OLED TV range from LG ticks all the boxes when it comes to recreating that cinema level experience at home. Its super slim profile, unique pixel technology and 4K picture quality are incredible. Team with an LG Sound Bar to amplify the audio experience and create a truly immersive experience. Bonus: The OLED TV also comes with the best in smart home additions, like voice activation and controls. So you’ll never need to leave your beanbag…

            Focus on the details

Don’t have the budget for a full renovation? Swapping out tired tapware for modern fixtures can make a huge difference to the look and feel of an outdated bathroom, laundry or kitchen, and with a host of affordable options on the market, there’s a style to suit every aesthetic and budget. Looking for a more DIY-friendly approach? Replacing your dated cabinetry hardware with contemporary handles, pulls or knobs, is as simple as screwing in the upgraded selections, and is guaranteed to satisfy that renovation itch without having to start from scratch.

Brad and Mel’s Dream Home scored high on form and functionality, especially in their son’s bedroom where ample storage and a built-in study space ensured the room would grow with him. Photography: Supplied by LG in partnership with Dream Home.

            Consider customisation

While the words ‘bespoke’ or ‘custom’ might lead to assumptions about pricing, a considered approach to customisation can be a cost-effective and clever solution to maximising space and increasing the liveability of your current home. Using joinery to repurpose space in tricky, compact or unused areas of your home can improve functionality, flow and keep your home working hard for you and your family well into the future with minimal fuss.

There’s something about a round dining table that speaks of democracy and togetherness, of listening and breaking bread — both literally and not. Those who sit at the round dining table are equal — not bound by heads and hierarchy. It’s no wonder so many of us choose round for this basic yet beloved piece of furniture for some of our most ritualistic moments.

Whether it’s round or rectangular, oval or square, a dining table not only forms the foundation of a dining area but becomes a hub of activity in its own right. It’s a spot for breakfast, lunch and dinner, as well as homework and work, a cup of coffee or a glass of wine. So the search for the perfect dining table for your space is not one to take lightly.

A round table is great in a smaller space; it can tuck in a little closer to a wall without penning people in. The round shape – like its oval cousin – also slides nicely into the curve trend we’re spotting everywhere right now.

Read on for the Homes To Love edit of the best dining tables in Australia.

Too big and it feels like you’re one of the knights of the round table, too small and you’re playing footsie with your grandmother all Christmas: the size of a round table can make or break the look of a room, as well as a dinner party.

            • As a general guide, allow room for 92cm of clearance on each side of any table, no matter the shape. That’s the amount of space you need to pull out chairs from the table, or to walk behind people seated at the table.
            • For a square room, small space, or dual-duty rooms, consider a round pedestal table, which takes up less space and is easier to walk around. There’s no need to straddle a leg just so that your friend’s brother can join the fray.
            • For tight spaces, consider creating a dining nook in a corner with banquette seating lined up against 1 or 2 walls, or use benches, which can slide under the table when it’s not in use.
            • A 107-122cm diameter round table seats 4 people.
            • A 152cm round table seats 6-8 people.

Do round tables take up less room?

As well as helping conversation, a round table can fit in spaces where other shapes look too intrusive, or where they take up too much room. Round tables are ideal for smaller dining areas as they fit into compact space, making the most of the available room. They can fit in a corner, or cosy up well to a curved booth seat (beware a round table against a squared corner booth though, the person sitting on the corner may not be able to reach the table). Round tables work well in the middle of a room as well, and look stunning with a pendant light hanging overhead.

So much more than just the stylish sidekick to your sofa, a place to come for connection, or an extra surface for storage, modern coffee tables – with their statement-making silhouettes, attention grabbing designs, and material focus – are truly deserving of their top tier status when it comes to the living room design hierarchy.

Don’t get me wrong, there’s always be a place for the timeless allure of more traditional glass coffee tables, go-to profiles like rectangle coffee tables, or the practicality of smaller, more flexible round designs, but there’s also a special kind of satisfaction that comes from seeing your house guests gush over your eye-catching piece and demanding to know where you got it!

Plus, if you think that modern and timeless can’t coexist, you’d be wrong. Not only do modern coffee tables offer a chance to scratch that creative itch, but they also provide a way to express your own unique personal style that can be as low-key or extravagant as you like, with the added bonus of being able to follow you wherever you go (hello renter-friendly design!)

How do you choose the right coffee table for your space?

While all design is subjective – you like what you like and your decisions should always be anchored in a sense of personal style – there are some practical considerations to keep in mind when it comes to choosing the right modern coffee table for your needs.

Firstly, are you adding to an existing living area, or are you starting from scratch? What do you need in terms of functionality, or are you less concerned with practicality and more focused on form? Regardless of your needs, one of the biggest factors in making the right decision is size.

As a general rule, a coffee table should be around two-thirds the length of your sofa. You want to make sure the size of the piece doesn’t overwhelm the room or take up too much floor area, which can quickly turn compact to cramped. You want to aim for ample space surrounding the coffee table, so its surface is within reaching distance from the sofa, but you have plenty of room to move around it. Additionally, a coffee table that is too small can make your living area feel visually off or imbalanced and can lack functionality.

The same principle applies to height. A coffee table works best when it’s either level with, or just shorter than the seat height of the sofa. While you might be appalled at the thought of resting your feet on a coffee table, this can actually be a good way to determine whether the height works with your sofa. But while this is a general rule, there are exceptions.

A taller coffee table that anchors a room in a purely decorative way will usually tend to be higher than one designed for functionality. Think tables adorned with perfect stacks of design books, or topped with collected curios, a vase (or two), and some statement paperweights. Modern coffee tables are made to stand out, and don’t need to follow the same rules when it comes to proportions. However, you still might want to consider a sofa with a higher back, or some statement armchairs, for visual continuity and balance.

How do I style a modern coffee table?

The rule of three has long been a trick of the trade when it comes to styling an interior space. The rule comes from the idea that incorporating styling accessories grouped in an odd number actually creates a pleasing visual harmony. Additionally, play around with various heights, tones and textures and don’t be afraid to pack on the personality when it comes to your favourite accessories.

Whatever you want your tabletop to look like, don’t forget to think about how you’ll use it. Is it mostly going to be a surface for food and drinks? If so, then keep the styling minimal with easy to move pieces like coffee table books, a stack of gorgeous coasters and a vase, making it a simple switch when you need the space back.

If you’re using the tabletop to add a decorative element to the room, then feel free to layer as much as you want.

If you’re looking for a dining table that helps give the illusion of a bigger dining space while also being big enough to cater to larger households -or more guests- then an oval dining table should be at the top of your considerations.

Perfect for soirees, rounded dining tables not only negate the possibility of table corner-inflicted injuries but also invite conversation. Although the couch and the kitchen bench have become the unofficial dining table after a long day at work, the dining table remains the congregation point for birthdays, family get-togethers, dinner parties and afternoon teas. You’ll likely have your dining table for years to come, so choosing the right one is key.

Is an oval a good shape for a dining table?

Consider an oval dining table the perfect medium between a generous rectangle dining table and a compact round dining table. Its soft rounded edges help reduce the amount of ‘dead space’ generally found with traditional rectangular dining tables (and is a tick according to the principles of feng shui), giving you more space to move freely within your dining space. An oval-shaped dining table also allows for more guests at the table when compared to a traditional round dining table and enhances conversational flow as each person is able to see one another.

            In short, yes!

Still not convinced? Take a look at these stylish and simple oval dining tables that lend themselves to Instagrammable dinner parties and everyday living.

            ]]>
You don’t have to embark on an expensive renovation or extensive makeover to enhance the look and feel of a room. Sometimes, a single change, like introducing a light-coloured rug, is all it takes to breathe new life into your space.

Whether it’s adding sophistication to your living room, serenity to your bedroom or warmth to your dining area, the perfect rug can make a world of difference. Read on to find out how, and to get some care tips to keep your rugs looking brand new.

            Come home in style

            Supplied

Imagine walking through the door and into a space that instantly greets you with warmth and style. The Arabella runner rug does just that by elevating your entryway while whisking away the day’s grime.

This rug’s minimalist design and subtle tones work with all interior styles. The wool and jute blend feels heavenly underfoot and stands up to daily comings and goings, with a Scandinavian charm that’s hard to overlook. Good looks aside, the Arabella runner is also an eco-conscious and pet-friendly option. To keep yours in peak condition, vacuum gently without a beater bar and immediately blot any spills.

            Cosy up your bedroom

For a bedroom that feels like a haven, it all comes down to incorporating elements that bring warmth and relaxation. Nothing does that better than a luxurious area rug like the Darren Palmer Zen rug.

You’ll feel your feet sinking into the plush texture of this wool-blend rug, plus the dense pile gives it a classy look that goes perfectly with bedroom decor. And with its white colour and subtle geometric patterns, it adds a touch of elegance to any space.

Vacuum regularly with a nozzle attachment to keep the fibres intact. When dealing with spills, just pat dry with a clean, absorbent cloth.

            Supplied

            Bring natural elegance indoors

For that effortless style we all covet, the Darren Palmer Earth rug is made from a blend of jute, cotton and wool and hand-loomed in India by local artisans. Its textured tones are ideal for a coastal home or holiday house, while the abstract pattern adds interest and texture.

To keep your rug in good condition, rotate every six months to ensure even wear and tear. Regular vacuuming on a low setting will prevent dirt and dust build-up without harming the wool fibres.

Mix it up with playful patterns and colours

Elevate the look of any room with a white rug peppered with an eye-catching pattern. The Amsterdam rug comes in a choice of sweet polka dots or a unique, nomadic-inspired print, making it a fun centrepiece for a boho or eclectic aesthetic.

Made from durable polypropylene, it’s built to last and is easy to maintain. A simple vacuum is all you need to keep it looking as vibrant as when you first laid it out – just skip the spinning brush to avoid any potential damage to the fibres.

When it comes to creating the perfect living room space there are many styling mistakes to avoid, from placing your television at the wrong angle, to choosing an uncomfortable sofa.

The living room ranks second only to the bedroom when it comes to time spent, but with the added bonus of being able to comfortably share the space with all of your family and friends. As such, ensuring you style and furnish it to perfection is of paramount importance.

The key to nailing your living room is to focus your thoughts on functionality. If you’re watching the television regularly as a family, you’ll want to make sure you have enough seating for every member of the household and then some, and that you’ll be able to watch in comfort from every angle for extended periods of time.

If you’re a regular reader, you may want to think about adding a desk lamp or floor lamp to ensure you’ll be able to comfortably read throughout the night. And, if you have furry friends, you’ll want to make sure your seating options will be able to stand the test of time and claws.

To help you create the perfect space, we’ve pulled together 19 of the best modern living room ideas.

Not many homes boast a living room as impressive as the one in this renovated 1860s terrace. A built-in sofa gives the illusion of a sunken lounge, playing into the home’s slight mid-century lean and providing the functionality necessary for its narrow footprint.

Mid-century rules in the living area of this retro-cool home in northern Illawarra. A pitched ceiling with exposed timber-toned beams makes the perfect pairing for the velvet lime-hued sofa, which has been covered with cushions in bright tones and playful patterns.

Sophisticated and sleek, the living room of this renewed 1930s Scandi style home is full of clean lines, architectural elements and luxurious finishes. The cedar cladding is offset by the white-face linear bricks, and the entire space is lit by generous almost floor-to-ceiling windows.

The living room of this Queenslander workers’ cottage acts as an extension of the outdoor zone – and vice versa. An off-the-floor coffee table and cut outs in the King Living sofa allow for uninterrupted sightlines to the garden, while the custom console provides plenty of storage.

Adorned with owner Annika’s artefacts and objects from a career in fashion, the living room of this revitalised Federation bungalow in Sydney is brimming with personality. Beyond this standpoint, the lush back garden and outdoor entertaining area opens up via bi-fold doors.

Indoor/outdoor flow, clever use of materiality, relaxed plush furniture and a timeless palette are the elements at play in this contemporary family house in Torquay. The Tasmanian oak timber-batten ceilings, a striking design feature, indulge owner Jane’s love of 1960s architecture and are an element that tie this room to other zones in the home.

Interior designer Melissa Bonney of The Designory sought to create the ultimate holiday home in Byron Bay and the end result is stunning. Subtle green hues are layered in this living room space to reference the Barefoot Bay Villa’s stunning natural surrounds.

This mid-century modern stone cottage in the Adelaide hills was lovingly revamped, with the exposed stone feature wall in the living room becoming a central highlight. Drawing colour cues from the stone wall, a tan leather sofa is paired with soft blue cushions for contrast.

Interior designer Kristy McGregor injected her own version of coastal cool in her renovated Bondi abode and the end result is stunning. Seeking to maximise the natural light that enters from the kitchen, a circular mirror acts as both a visual feature and light amplifier.

Tasked with transforming this Sydney home into an entertainer’s dream with a modern rustic aesthetic, interior designer Jillian Dinkel added her signature style to the abode. In the living room exposed brick walls and the vaulted ceiling were painted white, with the trusses painted pitch black for a dramatic touch.

In the renovation of her Federation-style home, interior designer Jillian Dinkel painted the window trims throughout the home in Dulux Blue Metal. In the living room, the Samsung The Frame television takes pride of place over the original fireplace mantle.

This modern home in Booker Bay makes the most of its stunning natural views, and who can blame it? In the living room generous windows make sure you can see the water from almost every angle.

While her Sydney apartment maybe have been on the smaller side, interior designer Sophie Bowers of Strutt Studios pulled no punches when it came to transforming her abode. In the living room a statement rug clearly zones the living zone where a plush grey sofa is paired with a black leather armchair.

In the renovation of this Daylesford cottage, interior designer Suzanne Cunningham sought to retain its relaxed country feel in order to create the perfect weekender. In the living room a rich mix of textures from the brown leather sofa to the billowing curtains add a soft touch.

Seeking to create a dramatic feature in the living room of this fibro cottage, the fireplace is painted in a dark charcoal that pops against the stark white interiors that run throughout the home. A dark rug centers the living space and adds a warm contrast to the concrete flooring.

In the second living room of this nature-inspired home in Riverview a more relaxed approach to design and furnishing was taken. A built-in leather couch is the perfect place to lounge, and a built-in sideboard provides ample storage space.

In Alisa and Lysandra’s renovated heritage home in Melbourne the dynamic duo opted for ceiling to floor steel-framed glass doors for dramatic effect and to create a seamless indoor-outdoor connection.

It may be small, but this Queensland pool house has been transformed into the ultimate holiday stay. The compact living room is subtly zoned with a tactile rug and a vivid green velvet sofa is the centre of attention.
